Leeds flop has lost 12 games and gone goalless out on loan

Leeds United have done really well to recover from last season's devastating relegation back down to the Championship after spending just three seasons in the top flight.

The 2022/23 Premier League campaign is certainly one to forget for the Yorkshire side but will serve as an important reminder to the club about how to handle player and managerial recruitment upon return to the promised land one day, especially regarding the inclusion of relegation clauses in certain contracts.

While new head coach Daniel Farke has managed to turn the side's fortunes around this season, there are still a few names on the books that haunt the board, including one man in particular who has had a torrid time out on loan.

Leeds United relegation clauses

Following Leeds' relegation from the Premier League, the side had a real battle on their hands to keep hold of players they had spent such vast sums of money on.

The reason for this was that the club agreed to allow various expensive stars to insert a relegation clause into their contract upon moving to Elland Road which forbade them from playing in the Championship, according to The Athletic. This was used as a makeweight to entice players to move to Leeds United without scaring them off at the prospect of taking a 60% wage reduction in the event of dropping down a division.

As a result, numerous big-money signings were sent out on loan during the summer, including Brenden Aaronson, Jack Harrison, Robin Koch, Max Wober and Marc Roca, among others. These players are set to return to west Yorkshire at the end of the season if a permanent deal doesn't come to fruition. This will likely be the case with Aaronson amid what has been a dismal spell on loan at Union Berlin, having signed for Leeds United in 2022 for £25m from RB Salzburg.

It was clear why Victor Orta brought in the USMNT star based on his record in Austria. In 66 appearances for Salzburg in all competitions across two seasons, Aaronson scored 13 goals and registered 15 assists, with 15 of his goal contributions coming from the number '10' position.

Unfortunately, it never quite clicked for the attacker at Leeds, having bagged one goal and three assists in 40 matches, leading BBC pundit John Newsome to call Aaronson's transfer "disappointing".

In a recent interview with The Athletic, the 23-year-old even admitted that he could feature for his parent club next season, claiming that his time at Leeds is "not done and dusted". However, his form on loan in Germany won't fill fans with any confidence that he can return and prove his worth in front of the Elland Road faithful.

Brenden Aaronson's stats this season

Union Berlin's 1-1 draw away at Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday evening ended a run of twelve-straight defeats for the German outfit. Aaronson was brought on 11 minutes from the end to make his 13th appearance of the season. Within those 13 games, the American has failed to register a single goal or assist. Digging further into the Leeds loanee's stats since moving to Germany doesn't make for great reading.

Last season, Aaronson's combined expected goals and expected assists per 90 average was 0.31 compared to 0.14 per 90 this term. The player is also averaging 0.69 progressive carries per 90 and 3.1 progressive passes per 90 with Union, a drop from 1.63 progressive carries per 90 and 3.26 progressive passes per 90 in the previous campaign.

Additionally, Aaronson has averaged 1.38 key passes per 90 and 1.72 passes to the final third per 90 with the Bundesliga side, while his numbers with Leeds were higher, having averaged 1.74 key passes per 90 and 1.78 passes to the attacking third per 90 last term.

Nevertheless, perhaps the most damning stat to sum up Aaronson's loan spell so far is that the former Philadelphia Union player has failed to make a single pass to the penalty area this season despite being a number '10'.

It seems unlikely that Aaronson will still be a Union Berlin player past the summer unless he drastically improves his output at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, so perhaps the 23-year-old will get a chance to prove himself one last time at Leeds if the club returns to the Premier League.

Wade's ton hands Tasmania the advantage

Wade, Tim Paine and Jackson Bird have given Tasmania a chance to pull off a remarkable come-from-behind win over Victoria

Alex Malcolm19-Nov-2018Matthew Wade plays a flick during his half-century•Getty ImagesA magnificent 137 from Matthew Wade has given Tasmania a chance to pull off a remarkable come-from-behind win over Victoria at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.Tasmania began the third day five runs behind Victoria with eight wickets in hand after a 170-run opening stand from Jordan Silk and Alex Doolan had all but erased the 201 first innings deficit.Silk moved to 90 but he and Jake Doran both fell with the score at 229 with a lead of just 28. Skipper George Bailey was out just three runs later with Peter Siddle nabbing two of the three. It left Wade and Test skipper Tim Paine to try and build some sort of lead for Tasmania to defend.Paine was the more fluent of the pair in their vital 73-run stand. Wade was 16 runs off 50 balls at one stage while Paine cruised to 40 off 76 with five boundaries. Paine edged the part-time off-spin of Matthew Short to slip. Gurinder Sandhu fell cheaply but Wade and Jackson Bird found another gear adding 88 for the eighth wicket.Bird made his maiden first-class half-century in his 100th innings. He also fell to Short with Wade stuck on 87.Wade farmed the strike to get to 99 before Gabe Bell was trapped infront by Holland to leave Tasmania nine down. But Riley Meredith did not need to face a ball before Wade got to his 13th first-class hundred.Victoria then had men on the fence to try and entice Wade to hand over the strike early in an over but he controlled the situation expertly and was able to add another 43 runs to the total with Meredith, before becoming Siddle’s fourth scalp. It left Victoria needing 276 to win and a tricky six-over period to negotiate before stumps on day three. Travis Dean and Marcus Harris got through without loss to set up a final day chase.

Barroca 'reintegra' afastados e ganha novas opções no time do Botafogo

Veja a tabela do Brasileirão!

Bell hammers first T20 hundred as record stand salvages tie

Ian Bell’s rejuvenation continued with his first T20 hundred as Birmingham escaped a third successive defeat in a high-scoring tie against winless Northants

ScorecardBirmingham Bears and Northants Steelbacks fought out a thrilling tie as runs flowed in the Vitality Blast at Edgbaston – with Ian Bell to the fore as he struck his first T20 hundred.Despite conceding 229 and 220, having bowled first, in their last two games, Birmingham chose to bowl first again – and the Steelbacks piled up 231 for 5.Richard Levi smashed an unbeaten 95 (52 balls, eight fours, six sixes), during which he passed 5,000 T20 runs, and Josh Cobb struck 61 from 35 balls. But Birmingham replied with 231 for 5 of their own as Bell smote 131 from 62 balls and Adam Hose hit 64. They shared a world record T20 third-wicket stand of 171 from 85 balls and kept their side within sight of a spectacular victory.Ten runs were required from the last over – and nine came to leave honours even. The Steelbacks started at a gallop with openers Levi and Ben Duckett clobbering 40 from 19 balls. Duckett edged behind at the start of a wicket-maiden from Boyd Rankin but Levi, reprieved on 22 when he was caught at deep square leg off an Aaron Thomason no ball, took with particular relish to former team-mate Olly Stone. He thrashed 18 from four balls in Stone’s first over and 28, including four sixes, when the paceman returned to bowl the ninth. Cobb pulled Grant Elliott over the Hollies Stand and the second-wicket stand yielded 129 in 70 balls before Cobb lifted Thomason to deep mid-wicket.Alex Wakely and Rory Kleinweldt kept the momentum high and Levi began the last over needing ten to reach his fourth T20 century. He found just five of them but walked off knowing his team were in a mighty position. They strengthened that position with two early wickets as Ed Pollock lifted Nathan Buck to mid-off and San Hain chipped a slower ball from Kleinweldt to extra cover.Bell and Hose batted steadily at first then gradually increased the tempo until they were parted by an unfortunate run out. When Bell was coolly caught right on the extra-cover rope by Procter the pendulum swung back the Steelbacks’ way but 21 needed from the last two overs became ten from the last.Nathan Buck kept his nerve to bowl a good final over and, rather cruelly after delivering such rich entertainment, both teams had to settle for a point. For Northants, still seeking their first win, the wait goes on.

Sunderland: Poyet had a mare with £0 ace who’s now worth more than Ballard

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has built an impressive squad full of talented young players who have the potential to develop and increase their market value.

The Black Cats have worked on a model that revolves around improving and selling on prospects whilst remaining competitive on the pitch and it has brought relative success to date.

Sunderland's current five most-valuable players

They reached the play-offs in their first season back in the Championship last season and then sold Ross Stewart to Southampton in a deal that could reach £12m this summer.

Despite their sale of the Scotland international, the Black Cats are currently fourth in the table as it stands, after 11 matches, and look on course for another play-off charge.

However, Sunderland have not always made the right decision or offered enough of a pathway to young players coming through the ranks and one talent who slipped through their grasp is John Egan, who is now worth more than current star centre-back Daniel Ballard.

Where did John Egan start his career?

The central defender started his youth career with Greenwood in his native Ireland before a move to the Stadium of Light in 2009 at the age of 16.

He went on to rack up 30 appearances for the Black Cats at U21 level but never made a first-team appearance for the club during his five-year spell on Wearside.

Egan spent time on loan with Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, and Bradford throughout his time at Sunderland. However, the Irish ace never played more than four competitive games in any of those loans.

His best spell came during the second half of the 2013/14 campaign with a loan move to Southend that allowed him to accumulate 15 appearances in League Two.

However, his exposure to regular first-team football for the first time was not enough to convince then-Black Cats boss Gus Poyet that he had the potential to make an impact for his parent club moving forward.

How much did Sunderland receive for Egan?

Sunderland did not receive a single penny in transfer fees for Egan as the head coach allowed the central defender to leave upon the expiry of his contract in the summer of 2014.

This meant that the former Greenwood prospect departed from the Stadium of Light for £0 and he took the next step in his development by moving to Gillingham, who were in League One at the time.

The former Black Cats youngster hit the ground running with his new club and immediately established himself as a regular fixture at the heart of their defence over the subsequent two seasons.

Gillingham defender John Egan.

Egan racked up a staggering 92 appearances in his two years with Gillingham, which included 81 League One outings, and contributed with 11 goals and four assists as a centre-back.

That form earned him a transfer to Championship side Brentford in the summer of 2016 and the Irish gem quickly adapted to life at that level.

He played 67 league matches in two seasons with the Bees and won at least 60% of his individual duels in that time, which shows that the towering enforcer was able to dominate opposition players with his physical attributes.

His dominant performances were enough to convince Sheffield United to smash their transfer record to sign him for a reported £4m ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

How many matches has Egan played for Sheffield United?

At the time of writing (13/10/2023), Egan has played 224 matches for the Blades in all competitions and is currently in their Premier League squad for the 2023/24 season.

His first year at Bramall Lane was a roaring success. The Ireland international started 44 of their 46 matches and won 62% of his duels on the way to promotion to the top-flight as they finished second in the Championship.

Egan then started 36 of United's 38 Premier League games the following term as his side kept 12 clean sheets and secured a top-half finish.

Sheffield United defender John Egan.

The Blades were, unfortunately, relegated back to the second tier at the end of the 2020/21 campaign but then worked their way back to the top division with promotion in the 2022/23 season.

Sunderland's former academy defender played in 45 of their 46 matches and helped his team to keep an impressive 19 shutouts in total.

How much is Egan worth now?

Egan, who was once hailed as a "leader" by journalist Kate Burlaga, is currently valued at €6m (£5.2m) by Transfermarkt and this illustrates his impressive rise since being released for £0 by Sunderland and Poyet in 2014.

Only Jack Clarke and Anthony Patterson are currently worth more than the Irish colossus within the current squad, which means that the Sheffield United star is worth more than every defender currently at the Stadium of Light.

That includes Ballard, who joined from Arsenal in 2022, as the English centre-back is currently valued at €2.5m (£2.1m) by Transfermarkt after his performances for the Black Cats last term.

The 24-year-old titan made 19 Championship appearances and contributed with 3.1 tackles and interceptions per match to go alongside a duel success rate of 62%, as per Sofascore.

Egan vs Ballard in the 2022/23 Championship (via Sofascore)

Now 30, Egan is an established performer within the top two tiers and has proven himself to be an excellent option for a team fighting to get promoted to the Premier League, which is where Sunderland currently are as a club.

His aforementioned statistics and value in comparison to Ballard suggest that the 30-year-old colossus would be Tony Mowbray's outstanding defensive option at the back.

Therefore, Poyet and the club had a mare in the summer of 2014 when they allowed Egan to depart on a free transfer as they could have shown a little more faith in the young defender.

Whilst it is easy to look back with the benefit of hindsight, Sunderland did not give the centre-back a full season of playing regular football out on loan before they made a decision on his long-term future, and it has come back to haunt them.

Pant, Kuldeep picked for first three Tests; Bhuvneshwar doubtful

While Rohit Sharma was dropped after playing two Tests in South Africa earlier this year, Karun Nair was slotted in and so was fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who had failed a fitness test recently

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jul-2018Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav have been picked in India’s 18-man squad for the first three Tests in England. While Kuldeep was part of India’s squad for the Afghanistan Test in June, this was a maiden Test call-up for Pant, who has followed up a smashing IPL with important innings for the India A side in England. The selectors named the squad for only the first three matches of the five-Test series. The selectors didn’t consider Rohit Sharma’s two limited-overs centuries on the tour enough reason to hand him a Test comeback, with India A captain Karun Nair continuing to hold the spot of the extra middle-order batsman.ESPNcricinfo LtdIndia had problems in the bowling department with Bhuvneshwar Kumar not named in the squad after he aggravated his lower-back stiffness while playing the ODI series decider a day before the Test squad was announced. Jasprit Bumrah, although named in the squad, will only be available for selection from the second Test on as he recovers from a broken thumb sustained early on the tour in Ireland.”Bhuvneshwar Kumar aggravated a lower back condition in the 3rd ODI against England,” the BCCI release said. “His condition is being assessed by the BCCI medical team and a call on his inclusion in the Test squad will be made soon.”Bhuvneshwar will be assessed by a specialist in London, and a decision will then be taken if he comes back to India or stays in England for rehab. The early assessment is not very optimistic according to sources. If Bhuvneshwar is ruled out of the Test series, it is bound to raise question marks over his inclusion in the third ODI after he had sat out the first two with the same issue. At the toss, Kohli had said it was not a tactical decision to play Bhuvneshwar; he said he wanted to give all the fast bowlers a chance in the series. In the match, Bhuvneshwar didn’t look at his best, bowling seven overs for 49 runs and dropping a catch.About Bumrah, the release said: “Jasprit Bumrah, who has been included in the squad, will be available for selection from the 2nd Test onwards based on his fitness.”Kohli would have been aware of the injury concerns to both his limited-overs strike bowlers but put up a brave face on Tuesday, when asked how ready India were for the Test series. At the post-match presentation after losing the ODI series 2-1, Kohli said the selectors and the team management did not need to take any hard decisions. “Our squad is pretty settled. We are really excited to be going into a lengthy Test series. It is going to be very challenging, but something that we are looking forward to as a side. We want to play hard cricket. We want to play tough cricket, which I’m sure the English team would provide us. It is going to be a hard-fought series between two quality sides.”Bhuvneshwar’s contribution during the 2014 England tour•ESPNcricinfo LtdIt wasn’t all doom and gloom, however. Mohammed Shami, who missed most of the IPL with personal issues and then turned up unfit for India training, has cleared the mandatory yo-yo test to force his way back into the squad. The other three quicks available for selection for the first Test were Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur. The selectors resisted the temptation of handing out Test selection based on limited-overs performances two matches after captain Virat Kohli had said Kuldeep and fellow wristspinner Yuzvendra Chahal had made a serious case for Test selection. Kuldeep, part of the squad for the Afghanistan Test, was retained as the third spinner, but Chahal, who last played a first-class match in December 2016, was not included. India’s two big match-winners at home, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, were retained. While the selectors seem to have resisted flamboyant picks, they did select a bolter in Pant, who originally wasn’t even part of the four-day leg of the A side’s tour. As it emerged that Wriddhiman Saha was not going to recover from his injury in time, India needed a back-up wicketkeeper for Dinesh Karthik. The choice was between going back to Parthiv Patel and looking to the future. Pant helped his own case with an unbeaten 67 in a successful chase of 321 against West Indies A in Taunton. He was unbeaten on 37 in the ongoing match against England Lions at the time of the announcement of the squad.Pant averages 54.16 in first-class cricket with a strike rate of 98.54, which has led observers to wonder if he could play an Adam Gilchrist-like role in India’s Test side. However, Pant failed to grab his opportunities on the A tour of South Africa last year. The last first-class season went without a century, but he has been in red-hot form since the start of the IPL.

As bad as Woltemade: Newcastle star who lost 100% duels could now be sold

Often, tense rivalries such as the Tyne-Wear Derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland can be decided in a split-second moment.

Unfortunately for the travelling Toon at the Stadium of Light, it would be a freak instance that would end in the Magpies coming away from the intense Premier League game empty-handed, as Nick Woltemade inexplicably headed past Aaron Ramsdale, mere minutes into the second half.

Labelled as a “nightmare” way to introduce yourself to the Tyne-Wear Derby by journalist Mark Douglas, Woltemade will be fearful that his centre-forward starting spot as Eddie Howe’s main striker is now no longer so secure, with the German off his clinical best for some time now in England.

Woltemade's slump in form at Newcastle

Woltemade’s season hasn’t been full of costly errors, though, with the club-record £69m fee splashed out on the 6-foot-6 striker right at the end of the transfer window, looking like a worthwhile gamble at points this season.

Indeed, at the time of writing, the Bremen-born menace has a respectable seven goals plying his trade on Tyneside from 21 clashes, but it’s clear from his more recent form that he is a striker now low on confidence.

The table above makes for some worrying reading, with the attacker who put away four goals from his first five Premier League contests now nowhere to be found, with Woltemade yet to break his goalscoring duck across December.

He never looked like beating Robin Roefs on Sunday afternoon, either, with just one paltry effort registered at the Dutchman’s goal, from his unmemorable 12 touches of the ball. Woltemade would also only amass two accurate passes, as writer Thomas Hammond declared at the end that he had “absolutely nothing” go his way at the Stadium of Light.

A stint outside of Howe’s starting XI could well do the goal-shy number 27 the world of good, with Yoane Wissa surely wanting to stake a claim to be Newcastle’s main striker, instead, as he emerges from the shadows of his long-standing injury issue.

With January also on the horizon, the powers that be at Newcastle could now be tempted to part ways with one of the Toon’s other underperformers in the upcoming transfer window.

The Newcastle star who Howe could cash in on

It’s set to be a busy start to the year in the Premier League, as top-flight sides far and wide attempt to flex their muscles in the hectic window once more.

On Newcastle’s end, they will be preparing for bids to come their way for Valentino Livramento, if reports are to be believed, with Manchester City allegedly keen on the England international for a price around the £65m mark.

Other reports have also suggested that the EFL Cup-winning defender is delaying any new contract negotiations with the Toon, in the hope he can retreat to the Etihad in time.

Pep Guardiola might not be so sure on splashing the cash in such an extravagant manner, though, if he were to watch back the ex-Southampton man’s disastrous display on Wearside in great detail, with the table above pointing out many flaws in the right-back’s game at the Stadium of Light.

Much like Woltemade, the 23-year-old cut an unconvincing presence on the ball throughout, with possession given up a high ten times from his 62 touches of the ball.

On top of his haphazard approach with the ball at his feet, Livramento would consistently shy away from getting stuck in and showing off the gritty sides of his character, winning no tackles or duels across his weak 90-minute display.

He also displayed none of the cutting edge in attack he has shown in the past to be worthy of City’s shopping list, with zero successful dribbles pulled off, just adding to Newcastle’s “negative” approach – as it was branded by the Athletic’s Chris Waugh – which ultimately made them “toothless” and easy to overcome and outmuscle.

At the close of the 1-0 defeat, Howe would hone in on the bizarre nature of Woltemade’s own goal as the sucker punch moment that lost the Toon the contest.

But, it was a drab team effort, too, that resulted in the disappointing defeat, with the under-pressure Magpies boss surely tempted to cash in on Livramento sooner rather than later, especially if he serves up more unexciting displays.

SNGPL reach final after frenetic two-day finish

ScorecardAFP

It took SNGPL less than two days to beat Lahore Blues in Hyderabad, where 34 wickets fell for a total of 321 runs on a greentop where fast bowlers made merry. The quicks picked up each of the 33 wickets that fell to the bowlers, and neither team got past 100 even once. Eventually a target of 68 didn’t quite stretch SNGPL, who got there for the loss of four wickets to pick up nine points, end their Super Eight stage with 21 points, and clinch a place in the tournament final.Sent in to bat, Lahore Blues stumbled to 89 all out in their first innings, with Azizullah picking up his 11th five-wicket haul in 37 matches. Raza Ali Dar, batting at No. 5, made an unbeaten 37 – it would remain the top score in a match where no one else passed 30.By the end of the first day, the Blues were batting again, having sent SNGPL packing for 92, with Aizaz Cheema picking up five wickets and the debutant Ali Mustafa three. Only four SNGPL batsmen got into double figures, the wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan top-scoring with 23.Starting day two on 2 for 0, Lahore Blues collapsed once again. This time their entire innings lasted only 15.1 overs, as Mohammad Abbas tore through their line-up with figures of 6 for 32. SNGPL reached their target in 21.2 overs, with Azhar Ali’s 26, Khurram Shehzad’s 13 and Asad Shafiq’s 10 small but vital contributions in a small chase. Cheema picked up all four wickets, to finish with figures of 9 for 66 in a losing cause. After the match, Azhar tweeted his amazement at what had happened: “Match Finished in 4 and half session [sic.], what a pitch”.
