Ishant Sharma reveals secret to his red-hot form

“Earlier I used to put pressure on myself about performing. Now I don’t think too much about those things”

I am enjoying my cricket right now – Ishant

A renewed approach to life has helped Ishant Sharma grow as a bowler, he said after taking a five-wicket haul in India’s first day-night Test. It was his first five-for in India since his first home match in 2007 against Pakistan.Ishant has more or less become a permanent member of this Indian team over the last two years, and is central to the pace attack that has progressively improved as India firmly established themselves in the No. 1 spot in Tests. This permanence and the recent bursts of improvement have not been enough to make Ishant consistently challenge for a limited-overs spot. But 12 years and 96 Tests later, he is not wasting time feeling sorry for himself.”In some sense [it hurts], yes. But I’m at a stage of my life where I’ve stopped worrying about these kind of things. I’m 31 now, I can’t keep worrying now about which format my name has been picked for.” Ishant said at the press conference in Kolkata. “Whether I play for India, whether I play Ranji Trophy – I just want to be playing at this point. It’s a simple thing. If you desire to keep playing, you’ll do well. Cricket’s given us everything. If we keep cribbing about small things like these, we will never improve.”Ishant Sharma’s two five-wicket hauls in home Tests•ESPNcricinfo LtdJust before Sri Lanka’s tour of India almost exactly two years ago, Ishant had taken 212 wickets at 36.93 in 77 Tests. Since the start of that series, he has taken 76 wickets in 19 games. His career average has gone up by a dramatic four runs per wicket and is presently at 32.94. That is precisely the average at which Zaheer Khan finished his career. If he plays in four more Tests, Ishant will be first frontline fast bowler since Kapil Dev to go past 100 Tests for India. These are all feats that were improbable some five years ago. What changed?”I think I’m enjoying my cricket now,” Ishant said. “Earlier I used to put pressure on myself about performing – that I need to take wickets, that I’m only beating the batsman…a lot of things used to run on my mind. Now I don’t think too much about those things, just how to take wickets. Obviously I’m experienced so I can assess conditions and adjust my lengths quickly, that makes it easy.”Ishant Sharma interview on The Cricket Monthly: ‘If I don’t take wickets even in one innings, I think my career for India is over’Another feat Ishant achieved on Friday was that he bowled India’s first delivery in a day-night Test. Bowling with the pink ball, he said, was not the same.”It was very different. In the start you must have seen that when we bowled a normal length, it wasn’t swinging that much. After that we realised what lengths we need to be hitting in order to get some more help. So the three of us [fast bowlers] communicated about hitting the right length,” Ishant said.Regardless of that rustiness, India managed to be consistent enough to have Bangladesh six down by lunch. The fall of those wickets began with Ishant trapping Imrul Kayes lbw. And it came with a ball he only started developing during the second day in the previous Test.Ishant Sharma picked up the first wicket for India on their pink-ball Test debut•BCCI”You must have seen that normally I used to swing it away from the left-hander,” Ishant said, talking of his new incoming delivery. “So I needed to add a variation. Your game only improves when you bring variety to it, and build confidence to bowl those in the match. So I was trying to bowl more of that in practice. In this match, the first wicket that I got – Imrul Kayes lbw – I got him with that ball. The two bowled wickets I got were also that ball. The ball lands and stays straight, it doesn’t go away from the batsman.”On the flip side of this contest, Bangladesh have struggled to show any resistance, in any innings, against this Indian attack. While neither of the pitches have particularly difficult to bat on, Bangladesh’s top-order has crumbled in the face of relentless pressure. At the same time, their bowlers haven’t come as close to troubling India. But even as they face a grueling period, head coach Russell Domingo was optimistic, citing Ishant’s steep rise as a potential inspiration for his own bowlers.”I don’t want to keep comparing the two sides but if you think of the number of Tests their pacers have played, and compare that with Ebadot’s fourth Test match, we have a very inexperienced bowling line-up.,” he said.”Look at the way Ishant started, and the way his career is now. It takes a bit of time for these young fast bowlers to find the length and the discipline it takes to bowl to guys like Rohit, Virat or Pujara. It is a steep learning curve at the moment.”

£51m attacker confirms summer transfer wish after claim Tottenham want him

A £51 million attacker has come out and admitted his summer transfer wish, after claims Tottenham are keen to sign him.

Spurs aiming to bring in new forward for added goals and assists

Fabrizio Romano backed reports that Spurs are eager to sign a quality new attacker to contribute towards goals and assists, with there being plenty of names on Johan Lange's target list heading into the next transfer window.

The likes of Pedro Neto, Nico Williams and others are being monitored by Ange Postecoglou's side, according to other media sources, with journalist Dean Jones also claiming that Spurs have their eyes on a new attacking midfielder.

"Pedro Neto is somebody on their radar," said Jones to GiveMeSport recently.

"Raphinha has been mentioned as well. Nico Williams, at Athletic Bilbao, is another player that they're continuing to monitor. It will be interesting. Pedro Neto will be a very difficult one to get because of the competition that there will be to actually sign him.

"But Tottenham have signed a couple of players recently, that they've done well to get through the door, and they will believe that anything is possible."

While Postecoglou currently boasts the likes of Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min, Richarlison, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Manor Solomon, Bryan Gil and Timo Werner as his out-and-out forward players, there is a case to be made that Spurs need extra quality.

Werner is likely to stay beyond his loan spell, according to various reports, but uncertainty surrounds the futures of Solomon and Gil who could leave if Tottenham bring in two more wingers. Alongside the aforementioned targets, Spurs are believed to hold a serious interest in Atalanta star Teun Koopmeiners.

Manchester United transfer target Teun Koopmeiners in action for Atalanta.

There have been suggestions that Postecoglou's side have been moving early with enquiries for Koopmeiners, who also featured at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, representing the Netherlands.

Koopmeiners makes summer transfer wish clear after Tottenham claims

Speaking to telegraaf.nl, as translated by Football Italia, Koopmeiners has now admitted to telling Atalanta he wants to leave amid Tottenham's reported interest.

“I told Atalanta I want to leave in the summer,” said the Dutchman.

“Last season, there was concrete interest from Napoli, but the two clubs didn’t reach an agreement. I hope there will be options to consider this year. My girlfriend and I are enjoying Italy, but I would endure rain for some clubs in England.

“I’d lie if I said I have no news of interest from Juventus and Premier League clubs. I read the news, too. I’ve had an amazing time at Atalanta and I hope they will get a big sum.”

While Koopmeiners has requested to leave, his wish to get Atalanta a big fee is backed by reports, which claim he could cost as much as £51 million.

Mohammad Nabi, Naveen-ul-Haq take Mis Ainak Knights to Shpageeza title

Mohammad Nabi’s Mis Ainak Knights chased down 155 with a ball to spare to defeat Rashid Khan’s Band-e-Amir Dragons in the Shpageeza T20 League final in Kabul. Knights ensured Rashid went wicketless in his four overs, and although Mujeeb Ur Rahman plucked two wickets, they went after the other bowlers to lift the title after taking the chase down to the penultimate ball.Knights needed 21 off the last three overs and their captain Nabi struck back-to-back fours off seamer Batin Shah to tilt the scales. But Batin hit back as Nabi holed out off the next ball for 30 off 21, but Sharafuddin Ashraf, the new man in, found the boundary off his first ball. Then, with Knights needing a mere five runs off 12 balls, Mujeeb got rid of Ihsanullah, and Shafiqullah Ghafari was run out for a duck, leaving them needing four off the final over. Tariq Stanikzai, too, was run out for a duck, but Ashraf and Fazal Niazai ushered Knights home in a fairly tense finish. It was 17-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz who had set the tone for the chase with 36 off 25 balls in a 71-run opening partnership with Noor Ali Zadran (42). No. 3 Ihsanullah and Nabi took charge of the innings after the openers fell, but a late-middle-order wobble tightened the chase. From 142 for 2, Knights slid to 152 for 6, but their lower order eventually bailed them out.Having been sent in earlier in the day, Dragons lost their openers Rashid and Javed Ahmadi in the Powerplay, but middle-order contributions from Imran Janat, Afsar Zazai and Shawkat Zaman gave their innings direction; Janat top-scored with 32 off 26 balls, including three fours and a six. Dragons were 109 for 4 in 15 overs, but they took 45 off the last five of their innings to end with 154 for 7. It would not be enough against Nabi’s men.Nabi had played his part with the ball as well, claiming 1 for 34 in his four overs, while seamer Naveen-ul-Haq was the pick of the Knights bowlers with 3 for 41.Knights’ Noor Ali Zadran was the top-scorer in the league with 354 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of nearly 135, while Dragons’ Nijat Masood ended as the top wicket-taker with 11 scalps, despite playing only six games.

'There will be more on the line' – captains welcome World Test Championship

We have longed to have something to play for that gives proper context to Test cricket, says Faf du Plessis of the competition

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jul-20191:16

World Test Championship will give Test cricket a boost – Kohli

Virat Kohli, India captain”It is a great thing, to be honest. We all were looking forward to it. Very honestly, we felt like there were a few series in between where after big tours we felt like maybe a one-off Test or a couple of Tests were not apt for the moment, but this gives a lot of context to all kinds of cricket that we are going to play.”It is a great thing for Test cricket at the moment because we have been talking about it for the last two-three years, regardless of how we have played as a team and the interest of the fans building because of that, going for results and all that sort of stuff.”Test cricket really needed a boost. The players were always putting in the effort but from a global point of view, an incentive attached in a way which the Test Championship presents. I think for all the cricketers involved now, every session and every game will be more intense, there will be more on the line. So it will be challenging, but all the more exciting and all the teams I am sure are going to enjoy a lot through this whole journey of the Test Championships.

This should add a bit more colour to Test cricket, having the numbers and names gives a clear indication of who is whoJason Holder

“We are awaiting the ICC World Test Championship with great enthusiasm as it adds context to the longest format of the game. Test cricket is very challenging and coming out on top in the traditional form is always highly satisfying. The Indian team has done really well in recent years and will be fancying its chances in the championship.”Tim Paine, Australia Test captain”The World Test Championship is a fantastic initiative. We love playing Test cricket, it’s the pinnacle for us, remains hugely popular in Australia and we’re fortunate that it enjoys great support at home among players, the media and the public. To wear the baggy green is the ultimate for all Australian cricketers and if the World Test Championship helps to ensure that all countries make Tests a high priority then that has to be good news for the game in general and the continuing health of the format in particular.”Jason Holder, West Indies captain”It brings a different dynamic to Test cricket. It’s the format that the true cricket fan really loves and adores. Having something more to play for now, with points and an overall winner at the end of the two years and to decide who is the best Test team in the world is great. Having numbers and names at the back of the shirts also adds a bit of flavour to the game as well. This should add a bit more colour to Test cricket, having the numbers and names gives a clear indication of who is who.The World Test Championship will kick off with the first Ashes Test•Getty Images”Going through five intense days of cricket and then the last session, getting the ultimate results – that’s the beauty of the game. When you’re on the winning end of a Test match, after fighting so hard, that actually makes you feel like you have done something significant.”I cherish those moments and every Test win because they stand out significantly. Being put under pressure for five days – the mental struggle, the mental grind – and then to be able to win is what it’s all about. We recall the win at Leeds against England back in 2017, when we played so hard and gave it everything to come away with that kind of victory was truly remarkable and quite memorable.”ESPNcricinfo LtdFaf du Plessis, South Africa captain”The ICC Test Championship is something new and quite exciting for this format. We have longed to have something to play for that gives proper context to Test cricket. The Proteas have had some cracking contests in bilateral series over the last couple of years, and going forward, the stakes are high because every series matters over a period of two years with it culminating in a final at Lord’s. It’s refreshing; as the players we are looking forward to this new chapter of Test cricket.”We have a tough assignment to start with against India away playing for the Freedom series. We beat them at home last season but playing against India in India is probably one of the toughest challenges for an international player. We then have the current world champions England at home, this is always a cracker of a series during our summer and one that we look forward to. We probably have the toughest start, but everyone will play everyone, so it doesn’t really matter.””I feel Test cricket is in a healthy state. The players who play all three formats will attest to the fact that Test cricket is the purest format of the game and it is still the No. 1 format. The younger generation may enjoy the hustle and bustle of T20 cricket but when a Test match goes down to the final hour on the fifth day, that entertainment is hard to beat.”James Anderson, England’s leading Test wicket-taker”Test cricket is the pinnacle of our sport. It is the very essence of cricket and the majority of players want to strive to play the purest form of the game. The ICC World Test Championship is another brilliant initiative for the sport, adding context and relevance to every Test series. Every Test matters, but even more so now.”

Nunez benched in 4 changes for predicted Liverpool lineup vs Arsenal

Liverpool are currently competing for silverware across all four fronts but face a daunting obstacle in the first step of their FA Cup campaign, travelling to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal.

Having won their Europa League group and advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup – where Fulham await for a double-legged tie – Liverpool are flying and top the Premier League table after 20 matches to boot.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo are both unavailable after heading off to the African Cup of Nations and Asia Cup respectively, while Dominik Szoboszlai is to miss a few weeks with a hamstring strain.

Liverpool will take a winter break next week and thus could field a strong line-up in London tomorrow, with Klopp making four changes from the team that defeated Newcastle United on New Year's Day.

1 GK – Alisson

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Klopp admitted that the trip to Arsenal is perhaps not the best game in the calender to rotate, and while Caoimhin Kelleher has been a decent backup, Alisson should start between the sticks, with his expertise needed against Bukayo Saka and co.

2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Long has Trent Alexander-Arnold been regarded as one of Europe's most creative and influential footballers, but this season, the 25-year-old is starting to demonstrate his worth as one of the game's very best.

With two goals and eight assists to his name, the Reds vice-captain will be confident of a standout performance, making amends for that miss.

3 CB – Ibrahima Konate

Liverpool ace Ibrahima Konate.

With Joel Matip out for the campaign after rupturing his ACL in December, it was crucial that Ibrahima Konate stepped up, and boy has he succeeded.

The 6 foot 4 Frenchman is a monstrous presence in the rearguard and works so well alongside his captain.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Virgil van Dijk will start against Arsenal, with the imperious Dutchman utterly magnificent this season as he puts last year's malaise behind him.

In the Premier League, as per Sofascore, the 32-year-old has completed 91% of his passes, averaged 5.0 ball recoveries and 4.5 clearances per game and won a whopping 78% of his duels.

5 LB – Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Owen Beck was recalled from his loan with Dundee but will not be eligible to play in London due to a suspension, so the versatile Joe Gomez will receive the nod and look to continue his impressive season at left-back.

The 26-year-old had been in dismal form for large portions of last season but deserves so much credit for weathering the storm and returning to play a key part in a year that tantalises silver-laden success.

6 DM – Alexis Mac Allister

Alexis Mac Allister.

Alexis Mac Allister missed the last four matches of December with a knee injury but made a cameo as Liverpool beat Newcastle, earning applause for his delightful threaded pass to set up Liverpool's late penalty.

With Endo absent, the Argentinian orchestrator will return to the starting line-up and will be expected to use his technical prowess to assert control in the midfield battle.

7 CM – Curtis Jones

Curtis Jones.

Curtis Jones was a key component in Liverpool's late-season purple patch before the summer, salvaging Europa League football and proving his worth as a multi-functional star in his Merseyside outfit.

Having scored three goals across the past few weeks, the multi-functional star has been so important in the centre of the park and is increasingly confident in his recycling of possession and metronomic swagger, with analyst Raj Chohan lauding his "phenomenal" ball retention skills.

8 CM – Ryan Gravenberch

wataru-endo-ryan-gravenberch-liverpool-opinion

Signing from Bayern Munich for £34m on transfer deadline day, Ryan Gravenberch put a tough spell of his career behind him and looked ahead to life on English soil with optimism, and while he made a fast start with Liverpool, he has regressed somewhat of late.

The 21-year-old has scored two goals and supplied two assists but has only started seven times in the league; that said, his latent quality is clear to see.

As per FBref, the £150k-per-week midfielder ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 10% for progressive passes and successful take-ons, the top 13% for progressive carries and the top 11% for blocks per 90.

9 RW – Harvey Elliott

Liverpool player Harvey Elliott.

With Salah now out of club action for around a month, give or take, Harvey Elliott, aged 20, might find a starting berth provided on the right wing, with the "special" talent, as he has been called by pundit Jamie Carragher, no doubt deserving of a more prominent role.

10 LW – Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz has been under fire recently, having only scored three goals from 19 appearances in the Premier League, struggling to implement his electric game as he might desire.

Nonetheless, he is a fine player and showed some notable improvements in a talismanic first-half display against the Magpies, with The Athletic's James Pearce noting the "influential" effort.

Diogo Jota is fit and firing after injury but might be best utilised from the bench, where he can be ever so deadly.

Burnley’s Connor Roberts now open to joining Leeds this month – Smyth

The biggest development at Leeds United thus far in the January transfer window has been the early exit of Djed Spence, sent back to Tottenham Hotspur halfway through what was supposed to be a season-long loan spell.

Unsurprisingly, Daniel Farke now wants to replace Spence by adding another full-back to his squad before the deadline. The Athletic's Phil Hay says that Leeds are admirers of Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams, but may struggle to sign him because he part of Nuno's plans.

However, Williams isn't the only player on the Whites' list, with Darren Witcoop reporting last week that Burnley's Connor Roberts was a possible target, and now there's been an encouraging update on the prospect of the Welshman moving to Elland Road.

Roberts fancies Leeds switch

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post's Graham Smyth Leeds have been long-term fans of Roberts because of his "style and athleticism", and the player himself would apparently now "welcome" a move that would give him the chance to play alongside Wales teammates Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Dan James at club level.

Leeds United transfer target Connor Roberts in action for Wales.

However, the report also stresses that "there is currently nothing imminent in the works" amid uncertainty over Burnley's willingness to do business. He's presently below Vitinho in Vincent Kompany's hierarchy, but the Clarets are unlikely to sanction his exit unless they can bring in a new competitor.

Roberts has the ideal CV for Farke

Roberts started the season as a key player for newly-promoted Burnley, making Kompany's XI for eight out of the first nine matches. However, he hasn't started a single game since that run from mid-August to late October, and has actually only played 35 minutes across three substitute appearances in that time. Leeds have no doubt been keeping tabs on his situation and sensed an opportunity in light of his slide down the pecking order.

While the 28-year-old has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League, he's previously been a shining light for the Lancashire outfit in the second tier. As the table below shows, Roberts was right up there among Championship defenders last season when it came to both goalscoring and creativity, which shows he can be a multi-facted offensive threat.

That form earned him a place in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, but he'd also shone in 2020/21 with previous club Swansea, scoring five times and setting up seven more to land the club's Player of the Season award.

Football journalist Will Lancaster has called him a "top quality Championship right-back", and he could be an ideal loan signing for a Leeds side chasing promotion. Roberts can help steer them safely to a play-off berth – they're currently nine points ahead of seventh-place Wolves and seven off the automatic promotion places – and then make a difference in the decisive post-season matches.

Burnley, of course, are battling to avoid relegation in their first season back and currently sit five points from safety, so they can't afford to sacrifice any depth, but Leeds will be hoping they acquire a new face who frees up Roberts for a transfer.

'I would understand if I was dropped for Antigua Test' – Ben Foakes

Only weeks after he was named man of the series in Sri Lanka, Ben Foakes feels he could have no complaints if he was dropped for the Antigua Test, and accepts there is huge pressure on his position as England look to balance their side following a crushing defeat in the first Test.Certainly in Barbados, England looked as if they needed another seamer. And while one option might be to drop a spinner, another is to give the gloves back to Jonny Bairstow and omit Foakes for either Stuart Broad or Chris Woakes. While that would be tough on Foakes, he accepts that, having scored seven runs across the two innings in Barbados and dropped a catch, he did not make as compelling a case for his retention as he would have liked. So while most would accept he is the best keeper available to England and while it is not too long since he was considered as a specialist batsmen (he had moved ahead of Gary Ballance by the end of the Ashes in Australia and was next in line for selection had one of the batsmen suffered an injury), he is aware that he can ill-afford an off-day.”I didn’t perform last game, so I can’t sit there and say ‘Why did you drop me’,” Foakes said. “I did really well in Sri Lanka and I completely want to play the next game. But we lost by 300-odd runs and if a change is needed, a change is needed.”This was a debate that was always likely to happen. With three men who have kept wicket at Test level in the England side, it was always likely that Foakes’ position would come under pressure if the side endured a bad game. And while England’s plethora of all-rounders should allow room for a keeper of Foakes’ class, the lack of runs from the batsmen is leaving him vulnerable. While Foakes said he tries to remind himself how fortunate he is to have played at all this winter – he had originally planned to take it off and was on holiday when called up for the injured Bairstow when England were in Sri Lanka – there’s a suspicion that the pressure of playing with two other keepers in the side is tough to handle.”It’s fine,” he said. “It’s a unique situation, but there’s no awkwardness. We train with each other. Jonny has done a fantastic job.Ben Foakes looks over his shoulder•Getty Images

“You can’t think ‘am I going to get picked; am I not going to get picked? It will drive you crazy. I’m just preparing for the next game. If I get the nod, I get the nod. If not, then good luck to whoever does.”There are so many distractions in cricket – so many things out of your control – and if I start thinking about them, it won’t be good for me mentally.”I didn’t think I’d be in Sri Lanka. Then I thought I would have one game and then Jonny would be back. And then I did well and kept the spot. So throughout my career, I’ve always felt, not that it’s a bonus and I don’t want to say I feel lucky to be here, but that things have fallen into place, so it’s just up to me to take the opportunity.”If I try and do my best then I’m satisfied. If I can get a chance and give everything I’ve got, you can’t have too many regrets.”Foakes was not the only player to endure a poor game in Barbados. The bowling attack looked horribly over-reliant on James Anderson and Ben Stokes, while the batting collapsed in both innings. While Foakes does not quite endorse Trevor Bayliss’ view that the side lacked “guts and determination” he does accept they were “way below” their best and that they perhaps lacked “clarity” in their second innings over whether they were trying to win or blocking for a draw.”We knew they’d be a good team,” he said. “We didn’t think we’d lose by 300 runs but we knew they were a good team with some amazing players. They played extremely well. But we were well under par and way below where we should have been. We have a lot more to give.”I don’t know if it’s just valuing your wicket more in that sort of situation. It’s a strange when you have to bat for two-and-a-half days. On one hand you’ve the 600 target, on the other you’re thinking do we play for a draw. So maybe it’s that clarity about what you’re going for, whether you’re completely blocking out the target and saying ‘you’re not getting me out.’ I think there was still a sense that we could win the game.”England flew to Antigua on Monday and will train at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Tuesday.West Indies, meanwhile, have named the same group of 14 players for the second Test. Uncapped fast bowler Oshane Thomas, who was originally called up as cover for Alzarri Joseph in Barbados, has been officially added to the squad.
