Liam Livingstone upstages Jos Buttler's Blast return to power Lancashire home

Derbyshire slip to opening-day defeat as Livingstone marries judgement to his talent

Paul Edwards09-Jun-2021
A few white-tailed sea eagles were reintroduced to the Isle of Wight recently and a similarly admirable project has resulted in the globally endangered large blue butterfly successfully breeding on Rodborough Common in Gloucestershire. We should not expect too much of these initiatives, though; your chances of having glimpsed either of these natural wonders over the last few years are still slight. But until today such prospects were far greater than the likelihood of your having seen Joseph Charles Buttler playing cricket for Lancashire.Buttler () last turned out in his county’s scarlet plumage for their Vitality Blast semi-final against Worcestershire on September 15, 2018 yet the view that he is a Lancashire cricketer in name only will be countered this week and next when he plays six T20 matches for the Lightning. The venues are far away from Somerset, his , but at least they will allow Buttler to reconnect for a week or so with domestic cricket. To judge from the reaction when Buttler came out to bat at Emirates Old Trafford this afternoon he will be made very welcome. The cheer that greeted his arrival was exceeded in volume only a few times this afternoon and one of those occasions saluted the searing straight-drive played by Liam Livingstone that ended the game in Lancashire’s favour by six wickets with three balls to spare.Related

In truth the home side’s pursuit of 169 had always seemed a little more comfortable than that, although their run chase would have been a little hairier had Livingstone been caught at deep midwicket on 55 when Leus du Plooy collided with the substitute fielder Mattie McKiernan when both were sprinting like students on a promise to get under a catch.Neither was seriously injured but Derbyshire’s chances suffered grievous hurt. Livingstone went on to make 94 not out off 58 balls and batted with a perfect sense of his responsibilities. This was mixed with the fine strokeplay that saw him belt ten fours and snot a couple of big sixes, and on a day when nearly 4,000 supporters applauded one world-class cricketer in Buttler it was also a reminder that Livingstone, while a great talent, is also, as yet, an unfulfilled one; a player who, when he marries judgement to talent, could be a first-choice pick for England, even in the five-day format. It is up to him.As for Buttler, he had a very respectable afternoon, conceding no byes in Derbyshire’s 168 for 7 and then making 30 off 28 balls before he reverse-swept Luis Reece straight to Fynn Hudson-Prentice at short third man. But the England wicketkeeper was only one of three Lancashire batters to share fifty-plus partnerships with Livingstone. Finn Allen marked his Lancashire debut by making 29 off 13 balls and putting on 53 with his new opening partner. And then when Buttler was gone Dane Vilas joined Barrow’s finest and saw his side all but home in a stand of 54 in 5.4 overs.Derbyshire also made a substantial contribution to a game in which both sides’ fielding was not yet attuned to the pace of the short-form game. The visitors’ best player was Reece, who was also born in Taunton, quirkily enough, just over a month before Jos’ mum brought her son out to bat for the first time.Jos Buttler played his first Lancashire game since September 2018•Barry Mitchell/Lancashire CricketIndeed, the first half of Derbyshire’s innings was dominated by Reece, who made 59 against the county he last represented in 2016. As is almost the norm in such innings, there were three sixes, the most unorthodox of them an outrageous switch-hit off Tom Hartley. Reece took heaviest toll of Richard Gleeson, whose only over in his return to first-team cricket after nine months out with a stress fracture cost 21 runs. Gleeson might observe drily that he had dealt with the fracture; now all he had was the stress. After Reece had been given out leg before when attempting to reverse-sweep Danny Lamb, Derbyshire’s momentum was maintained by du Plooy, who made 34, and Alex Hughes, who contributed 28 to their 52-run fourth wicket partnership before both batters holed out to successive balls from Matt Parkinson in the 18th over. That left the legspinner with 3 for 28, his team’s most impressive figures, although in truth both Danny Lamb and Livingstone performed as competently, both conceding fewer runs and bowling at tricky points in the innings.Though Derbyshire’s total was competitive it came at a heavy cost. When diving to complete a single Wayne Madsen injured his hamstring, a fact of which he only became aware when he attempted to get up and promptly fell over again. The sight of the Derbyshire batter being helped from the field does not bode well for his side’s prospects in this year’s Blast and it may also have more local consequences in this city; Madsen has been signed up to play for the Manchester Originals in the Hundred.

Luis Suárez 2013/14

Luis Suárez made Premier League history in the 2013/14 season with a performance that was nothing short of spectacular. The Uruguayan led Liverpool’s title push by scoring an incredible 31 goals and laying on 19 assists in just 33 league games, earning the coveted Premier League Golden Boot.

Despite all his efforts, Liverpool ended up missing out on the Premier League by two points, and Suárez opted for a move to Barcelona the following summer.

Every Premier League Golden Boot winner

Some of the Premier League’s greatest goalscorers have won the Golden Boot – here’s every player to earn the coveted prize.

ByStephan Georgiou May 26, 2025 Eden Hazard 2014/15

During the 2014/15 season, Eden Hazard elevated himself to the top of the Premier League’s elite ranks with a masterclass in football genius. Under José Mourinho’s management, he was the cornerstone of Chelsea’s attacking arsenal and was essential to the Blues’ run to the Premier League title. With an incredible 14 goals and 9 assists in 38 games, it’s safe to say Hazard lit up the league.

Hazard was justifiably named the PFA Player of the Year after his incredible season, solidifying his place among the Premier League’s most formidable players.

Riyad Mahrez 2015/16

Riyad Mahrez became a shining figure during Leicester City’s incredible ascent to the top of English football in the 2015/16 season.

With his flawless dribbling, accurate passing and clinical finishing, the Algerian winger captivated spectators and became one of the league’s best, recording an impressive 17 goals and 11 assists in 37 appearances.

His contributions were nothing short of amazing and rightly led to him winning the PFA Player of the Year award as Leicester City pulled off the impossible to lift the Premier League trophy.

N'Golo Kante 2016/17

N’Golo Kanté revolutionised the position of midfield enforcer in the 2016/17 campaign as the driving force behind Chelsea’s title win under manager Antonio Conte. Though he had a modest manner, Kanté had a huge impact on the game as he constantly patrolled the midfield, winning tackles, making interceptions and setting the pace of play.

As well as being a menace in the defensive third for the Blues, which saw them ship just 33 goals all season, he also played a key part in starting attacks with midfield-splitting passes.

Mohamed Salah 2017/18

Mohamed Salah, one of the most dangerous attackers in international football, shocked the Premier League with his brilliant exploits in the 2017/18 campaign. After moving from AS Roma to Liverpool, the Egyptian winger led Liverpool’s thrilling attacking play, forming a potent attacking combination with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané.

He broke the record for most goals scored in a 38-game Premier League season with an incredible 32 goals in 36 league games, which helped the Reds secure a top-four finish and go all the way to the Champions League final.

Virgil van Dijk 2018/19

Virgil van Dijk proved to be an unstoppable defensive force in the 2018/19 campaign, revolutionising Liverpool’s backline and leading them to the summit of European football in the Champions League. Under manager Jürgen Klopp’s direction, Van Dijk rapidly became the mainstay of Liverpool’s defence after joining from Southampton in January 2018.

His influence went beyond his own accomplishments, since his strong presence gave his colleagues confidence and raised the bar for the whole squad. As well as his defensive qualities, the Dutchman scored six goals and assisted four in all competitions, as the Reds were edged out by a single point in the Premier League title race.

Kevin De Bruyne 2019/20

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne

During the 2019/20 campaign, Kevin De Bruyne demonstrated his unparalleled creativity, vision and technical skill, solidifying his position as the engine of Manchester City’s attack.

Under Pep Guardiola, the Belgian was at the heart of everything, which is evident from his 13 goals and 20 assists in the Premier League, as Manchester City relied on him to produce the goods on a number of occasions.

The fact that he won the PFA Player of the Year award in a season where Liverpool stormed to the Premier League title just goes to show how special he was in that particular campaign.

Kevin De Bruyne 2020/21

Kevin De Bruyne had yet another season to remember in the 2020/21 campaign, as the cornerstone in Manchester City’s pursuit for glory on multiple fronts.

Despite his struggles with injuries during the season, he continued to demonstrate his capacity to set the pace of games, generate scoring opportunities and lead by example. This saw him score six goals and assist 12 in just 26 games in the Premier League.

The Citizens lifted the Premier League and the Carabao Cup, while they also got to their first Champions League final, which was all made possible by De Bruyne’s contributions.

Mohamed Salah 2021/22

Throughout the 2021/22 campaign, Mohamed Salah’s electric performances and goalscoring ability captivated football fans worldwide.

The Egyptian led Liverpool’s assault on the title, showing off his deadly finishing to take his tally to 23 goals and 13 assists in the Premier League. Despite finishing as the joint-top scorer in the top flight, the Reds were edged out in the race for the title, as Manchester City took the spoils. There’s no doubting that the Reds would’ve been nowhere near City had they not had this man.

Erling Haaland 2022/23

Erling Haaland became a goalscoring phenomenon in the 2022/23 campaign. Throughout the campaign, Haaland’s commanding presence and skilful finishing terrified opposing defences, leading the line for his club with stunning brilliance.

Haaland struck 36 times with eight assists in his first 35 Premier League games to earn the honour as the top scorer for the 2022/23 campaign, a mark that helped him score 52 goals across all competitions in his first season in England. This allowed City to lift the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.

The amount of records he broke last season is truly sickening, and is too long to list.

Pep Guardiola denies Man City are a 'big mess' and says Premier League champions must 'change less than ever' amid five-game losing streak

Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City are not in a "big mess" and they need to "change less than ever" despite losing five straight games.

Man City lose five games in a rowGuardiola says they aren't in "big mess"City must "change less than ever"Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

City fell to a fifth loss in a row at the weekend as they were thumped 4-0 by Tottenham at the Etihad. Although they are bang out of form and are eight points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool, Guardiola is not panicking about their current situation.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT PEP GUARDIOLA SAID

When asked what a good season would look like from this point, the City boss said: “I don’t know. By our standards, it will be a bad season. We come from there [top] so we can only go down if we lose. It’s nice. I think we deserve some patience when we lose games. It will not be a big mess. You are defending a legacy, tradition, success and that is so difficult to handle. If we don’t do it, try to focus on short periods of time and win the next games. What I want is commitment from the players to still do what we have to do. We will congratulate the team that takes our crown because they deserve it, not because we deliver it to them, give it to them. We have to be ourselves in every training session and every game to do what we have to do. This is the only way I know.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

City still sit second in the Premier League table and Guardiola has guided them to four straight league titles, Champions League success, and a host of domestic cups. Rather than making wholesale changes, the Spaniard stressed they need to make minor tweaks.

He added: “What should I change? We are big believers in the process and the fundamentals we have to do. Injured players have to come back to their best form, players who have played a lot of minutes because of the injuries need rest. One good result can change our mind and we believe deeply that when we are winning a lot this will pass and right now this shall pass. Nothing is eternal. The moment we start winning again, I was thinking we will start to lose games. It’s unusual basically because this team won a lot during many years.

"In this situation, we have to go more direct to our principles, change less than ever because at the end we had 26 shots against Spurs. We had more expected goals than them, we created a lot of chances. But there are departments where we’re not strong enough and that’s why when we lose in certain situations they’re stronger than us and we have to run backwards because our four central defenders are not there. They are still not ready because they are injured. One day we’re going to win a game and our mind will be clear. I hope that will happen on Tuesday, if not Sunday. The desire is there and we’re going to try.”

After watching a lot of rain fall they outgunned the Stars again in the 12-over decider.Bubble impactSteven Smith has already said there is “no chance” of him appearing this season as he moves from bubble to bubble. However, in a slightly unexpected move, Mitchell Starc has signed and could appear towards the late stages of the tournament having not played BBL since 2014. Sean Abbott and Nathan Lyon are part of the Test squad so are unlikely to be available until the back-end (although Abbott may be released earlier depending on selection and protocols) while captain Moises Henriques will miss the first couple of games with the Australia A squad. He had one really tough outing – taken for 61 by the Melbourne Stars when Marcus Stoinis hit 147 – but in his next three games against them, including the final, finished with 8-1-51-3. He could be even more important this season given the likely absence of Sean Abbott for an extend period, perhaps no Josh Hazlewood at all and with the withdrawal of Tom Curran.Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)Last season’s champions were the best in the middle overs across all teams with the ball. Chelsea favourites to sign £60m "superstar" who could rival Palmer

Chelsea's on-pitch performance has been the direct inverse of the investment and ambition shown in recent years under Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali and Co.

Albeit improved form in the months building toward Mauricio Pochettino's departure salvaged Europa Conference League football after spending much of the campaign on middling ground, but this is hardly a shining achievement despite improving on the dismal 13th-place Premier League finish of 2022/23.

But Chelsea have now secured their project manager in Enzo Maresca, joining from Leicester City after winning the Championship with the Foxes in his maiden helmsman year, another acolyte streaking away from Pep Guardiola's all-engulfing managerial influence.

Supporters will hope for streamlined recruitment, and indeed the club are hoping to secure a transformational signing in the weeks to come.

Chelsea eyeing Premier League star

According to respected insider Simon Phillips, Premier League star Michael Olise is leaning toward a transfer to Chelsea over Manchester United, should he leave Crystal Palace this summer.

He stated: "A second source has now added more confidence that Olise will pick Chelsea over Manchester United, following on from my top source saying that last week. We will have to see how that one unfolds in the next days/weeks.”

Believed to have a £60m release clause with the high-flying Eagles, Olise is a long-term target at Stamford Bridge following his Cobham release in 2016, with the Blues even failing to convince the 22-year-old last summer despite meeting his £35m release clause. He then penned new terms.

Chelsea's instability likely deterred the winger from making a return, but Stamford Bridge is now confident of a resurgence and Olise could head the new era under Maresca's wing.

Why Michael Olise is so good

Micah Richards has already declared that Olise "is going to be world-class… he's going to be a superstar" back in February, and indeed the evidence suggests that Palace have a player of elite-level ability on their hands.

This season, Olise has scored ten goals and added six assists in the Premier League despite only starting 14 matches, honing his skill in the final third after an impressive 2022/23 season under Roy Hodgson, where he posted just two goals across 37 matches but did supply 11 assists for his teammates.

Typically found on the right wing, the £100k-per-week star is fast and furious, intelligent with his distribution and incisive in key moments, unleashing strikes and defence-splitting passes to equal effect.

As per FBref, the ace ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 3% for assists, the top 7% for shot-creating actions, the top 14% for passes attempted, the top 18% for progressive passes and the top 13% for successful take-ons per 90.

He's electric. Olise is headed right for the op and Chelsea would score an almighty success in bringing him back to the place where he cut his teeth as a teen. Every effort must be exhausted in making it happen.

How Michael Olise could fit in at Chelsea

Chelsea are already closing on their first signing of the summer in Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, who is opting for a cross-London switch despite the vested efforts of Newcastle United.

But when have the west London giants ever rested on their laurels? Paul Winstanley and the rest of the recruitment team will fix the wrongs of recent years and ensure that Chelsea do not drift to and fro – instead lifting themselves back to the forefront of domestic and continental competition.

Olise, it could be posited, would be the catalyst in ensuring such lofty dreams become actuality, with the right-sided attacker utterly brilliant for the Eagles this season. Sure, his fitness record leaves plenty to be desired but Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke are among the subsidiaries to balance the workload on the right flank.

Olise's creative genius – he has been described as "one of the best wide playmakers in Europe" by talent scout Jacek Kulig – was showcased during the 2022/23 campaign but he demonstrated his dynamism and stretched his wings onto a wider canvas this year, painting the Premier League in hues of his choosing.

Statistical deep-diving has already been covered but just take a look at the improvements made this season, taking his clinical level to soaring heights, sharpening his technical ability and proving more relentless in his desire to push play forward.

While he only featured in half of the Premier League's fixtures, Olise has proven himself worthy of a leading role in a project such as Chelsea's, where he could rival even Cole Palmer for a place as Maresa's attacking talisman.

Palmer signed from Manchester City in a £42.5m deal last summer and while his talent had been shown in flashes, few foresaw the staggering quality that has taken the division by storm.

Plainly, few have been able to withstand the torrent of Palmer's prolificness, the 21-year-old scoring 25 goals and supplying 15 assists from 45 matches for the Blues.

Manchester City's goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland boasts the best goal-per-match rate of any player on that list at 0.87, so it's rather telling that Olise's rate across the recently concluded Premier League campaign stands at 0.84.

Sure, he only featured throughout half of the campaign but the Les Bleus-aspiring phenom has proven himself – he is the real deal.

Chelsea would complete their attack by securing his signature, landing a versatile forward with potency to rival Palmer, who has even been hailed as "one of the best players in the Premier League" by pundit Jamie Carragher.

Olise has also found himself at the heart of such effusions, with Kulig dubbing him "one of the EPL's best players in recent weeks" back in January as he blitzed through opposition.

Chelsea must spend wisely to narrow the gap between themselves and the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, but with this signing, that might just happen.

Leeds line up early move to sign "wonderful" Archie Gray replacement

Leeds United will be somewhat resigned to the fact that their star-studded squad could now be picked off, with the West Yorkshire titans in a vulnerable current position by staying put in the Championship.

The added injection of cash from the new Red Bull deal could help them out, but money will ultimately end up talking, especially if crazy offers come their way they would be silly to turn down even for their most prized assets.

Archie Gray

Archie Gray is one of those names who Leeds might well feel powerless to losing this summer, especially if a reported £50m+ bid does end up being offered up from a footballing superpower such as Bayern Munich, who are allegedly interested in the 18-year-old's services after a sublime debut season in the senior team at Elland Road.

Raking in substantial cash for the teenage sensation doesn't necessarily mean Leeds have to break the bank to adequately replace him, however, with a free transfer deal already in the works for a potential replacement according to reports.

Leeds going back in for "wonderful" defender

A recent report by Football Insider has confirmed the fact Ben Johnson will walk away from West Ham United when his contract at the London Stadium expires this month, with Leeds registering strong interest in his services as a free agent.

Rangers up in Scotland are also cited as being an interested party for the adaptable defender according to the site, with the 24-year-old capable of filling in wherever needed across a back four, as has been seen over the span of his time with the Hammers to date.

Ben Johnson West Ham

This campaign saw his role at the London Stadium diminish to being very much a bit-part figure though, only starting four total games in the league with a meagre average of 39 minutes per match being mustered up, with a move to Leeds surely appealing to him if Gray does walk away.

Why Johnson would be a great replacement for Gray

He has proven his worth to the Hammers cause over his five years in the senior ranks, helping himself to two Young Player of the Year accolades and glowing praise from the likes of Stuart Pearce describing him as a "wonderful professional", content at just playing his part unnoticed no matter how small for the Irons.

He could well take on a starring role in this new location though, filling in gaps not just in Gray's absence, but all over the pitch as Leeds strive for promotion once more.

Although, looking at the table above, Johnson has looked at his most comfortable donning a Hammers strip in that right-back spot, with two of his four starts in the Premier League coming here this campaign just finished.

Yet, he managed to still show his assuredness playing in midfield down the right flank – much like Gray has done for Leeds as well in the centre of the park, with his display against Manchester United in February of this season sticking out.

West Ham United defender Ben Johnson.

Constantly looking to cross into the area bombing down the wings, with eight crosses attempted at Old Trafford in total, Johnson could comfortably slot into Farke's XI in Gray's absence, therefore, with the likes of Joel Piroe for Leeds scoring a selection of his goals this season by latching onto crosses.

This was seen in his side's 4-0 demolition job of Norwich City in the play-offs, as Piroe leapt to power home to help destroy the Canaries.

Leeds will be far worse off without a figure like Gray in their side, but if they can replace his versatility cheaply in the form of the 24-year-old coming in from West Ham, this feels like a shrewd deal worth exploring.

Rodgers is a fan: Celtic in "talks" to sign 26 y/o Europa League player

Celtic are "locked in transfer talks" with a Europa League player over a move to the club in the summer transfer window, according to reliable journalist Mark Hendry.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops continue to be linked with a host of players this summer, as Brendan Rodgers looks to freshen up his squad and make competition for places even more fierce.

Celtic's first signing of the window could actually be a player who supporters already know well, with talks progressing over a permanent move for Paulo Bernardo. The 22-year-old played an important role in Rodgers' side completing a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double, making 22 appearances in the league, and moving to Parkhead for the foreseeable future seemingly appeals to him.

Former Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney has also been linked with a return to the club, with Arsenal willing to let him leave after loaning him out to Real Sociedad for the 2023/24 season. It has even been claimed that the Scot would "walk back" to Parkhead, such is his desperation to return, but his price tag is likely to be an issue.

Adam Idah was another excellent loan signing for Celtic in 2023/24, coming in from Norwich City and making an immediate impression when fit. His biggest contribution was the dramatic last-minute winner against Rangers in the Scottish Cup final, in a moment that will likely forever endear him to Hoops supporters. A permanent deal is wanted by Rodgers, in what could be an excellent piece of business.

Celtic in "talks" to sign 26-year-old 'keeper

According to Hendry on X, Celtic are "locked in transfer talks" with Sparta Prague goalkeeper Peter Vindahl Jensen over a move to the club in the summer.

In his report for Football Scotland, Hendry goes on to add that "the 26-year-old stopper is high up on the Hoops' summer shortlist as they look to bring in a replacement for Joe Hart who officially retired after winning the Scottish Cup and Premiership Double" adding that Rodgers "is an admirer of the player and hopes to entice him to Glasgow."

With Joe Hart retiring at the end of the season, it is now essential that Celtic nail his successor, given the influence the veteran goalkeeper enjoyed during his time at the club.

Jensen looks like a strong option to come in, however, making 10 appearances in the Europa League, including appearing twice against Liverpool in 2023/24. Admittedly, the 26-year-old did concede 11 times in those matches, in respective 5-1 and 6-1 defeats in the knockout stages, but he is still a footballer with plenty of pedigree.

The Dane won two trophies with Sparta last time around, clinching the Czech title and cup glory, so Celtic could be signing a player who knows how to get over the finish line, continuing their winning mentality in the process.

Liverpool 'keeper Caoimhin Kelleher could still be the best and high-profile option for the Hoops – a £10m move for the Irishman has been mooted – but Jensen could be a cheaper choice who equally still has his best years ahead of him.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Results on the field have aided that cause, with back-to-back promotions lifting the club out of the National League and into the third tier of English football. Success is easy to sell and provides plenty of positive emotion for the cameras that continue to monitor every move on and off the pitch.

  • WHAT TRUNDLE SAID

Wrexham are now thriving in League One, but would interest be retained if they hit a wobble? That question has been put to Lee Trundle, with the former Red Dragons striker – speaking in association with – telling GOAL: “I think they can dip a bit, especially with them going into League One. There is a bit of leeway for that to happen. I don’t think the fans will have headed into the league and expected to run away with it – although they have started off unbelievably.

“I think there is a bit of leeway for them to go through a bad patch. But, once you are on that run and used to winning games, it’s gets into a habit. Teams are coming to Wrexham now and looking and thinking it’s a big game for them, never mind just Wrexham coming into League One. Other teams will be seeing Wrexham as a big game. Other players will be seeing it as a desirable place to go and play. They will want to perform with hopefully getting the chance of getting a move there. You look at the football club and it’s only going in one direction.”

    WHAT NEXT?

That direction could soon be the Championship, with Wrexham taking up a perch at the top of the League One table. There is still a long way to go in 2024-25, but more shrewd recruitment has ensured that Phil Parkinson’s squad remains fiercely competitive while Reynolds and McElhenney have never shied away from the fact that they want to guide the club into the Premier League.
