Why is this Man United striker considered the ‘safe’ option for England?

While the decision amongst the England fanbase as to whether Danny Welbeck is worthy of a starting place against Italy is almost unanimously against him, he still harbours the favour of the one man who really matters. Roy Hodgson looks likely to pick the Manchester United striker to fill a role on the left of midfield as England kick off their World Cup campaign on Saturday – a widely contested decision.

Welbeck hasn’t impressed consistently on the occasions he has played for United this season, and he hasn’t performed too much better when in the white of England. But while the form of Raheem Sterling has been far superior to that of Welbeck, there must be something Hodgson sees in him to keep him higher in the pecking order than his, ultimately, more talented teammates.

This something is widely thought to be down to Roy’s more conservative leanings – in the football, not political, sense. He’s renowned as a manager who tends to play it safe, and Welbeck presents a ‘safer’ option than Sterling. His reputation as a particularly dogged worker is opposite to the flamboyance of his colleagues.

One thing that must be made clear though, is that Welbeck is first and foremost a striker. His preferred role is as a ‘number nine’. With this in mind, he is a bigger misfit for the role than Sterling. Because of the belief that he constitutes a more secure option, that doesn’t make him any more of a defensive selection.

Numbers-wise, Sterling largely outstrips Welbeck defensively, but this is simply down to the fact he has had far more game time than the United man. But even when you whittle their statistics down to what they do per 90 minutes, Welbeck hardly fairs any better. For instance, Sterling makes 1.30 tackles per 90 minutes compared to Welbeck’s 0.98.

With the system Sterling has been incorporated in this season, he has had to shoulder his fair share of defensive responsibility. As Liverpool look to win the ball back in quick bursts, Sterling has become accustomed to harrying his opponents into mistakes. And even in games where Liverpool sat slightly deeper, using their superior speed on the counterattack, Sterling excelled as he won the ball back on numerous occasions in front of his back line before breaking at pace – such as away at Manchester United.

With the England squad containing so many more gifted players – in a technical sense – than they have had the privilege of in the past, it seems odd that Hodgson would opt for a player who doesn’t possess the same kind of abilities on the ball. Sterling attempts, and successfully completes, far more take-ons, draws more fouls, and creates far more chances than Welbeck.

While neither are defensive players, Welbeck is no more defensive than Sterling. But it is a mismatch between the two when it comes to attacking efficiency.

While you would expect Sterling to have better attacking figures, having played in a far better side last season, he has to shoulder his fair share of responsibility in defence alongside Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson, and thus the conjecture that he doesn’t contribute defensively is undair.

Ultimately, it feels as though Welbeck is considered a safer defensive option purely because he is less dangerous going forwards. Because Sterling provides so much in attack, there are reservations over the amount of work he puts in defensively. The statistics suggest that this is an unfair assumption, especially if compared to Welbeck.

Whilst selecting Welbeck ahead of Sterling may appear like an err on the side of caution, the numbers really don’t give any indication as to why this should be the case. Defensively, there aren’t any notable differences between the two, but in attack, it is hardly worth a discussion.

Clubs testing fans’ loyalty to the limit

[post_link url=” https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/football-fancast-paints-a-picture-of-the-modern-footballer,https://www.footballfancast.com/football-blogs/top-players-in-europe-who-would-be-the-perfect-fit-in-the-premier-league,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/the-football-quarterbacks-and-their-role-within-the-game” target=”_blank” type=”tower”]

As money continues to spiral out of control in the game we love, a BBC survey suggests that we the fans are bearing the brunt of clubs’ desires to treat us as consumers rather than devoted followers.

We all know that following a team is a highly emotional business; whether you’re supporting a team desperately trying to stay in the Football League, or a side attacking on all fronts to bring home silverware, it is one hell of a ride.

But the price involved has escalated, as the BBC shows, meaning clubs run the risk of alienating a good deal of their core fanbases; with some unwilling to pay the inflated prices for tickets.

Chelsea and West Ham are among the worst offenders in the Premier League, with the cheapest ticket at both clubs costing £41 and £36 respectively; pricing many fans out of attending matches.

Meanwhile despite offering a comparatively reasonable match day ticket for £26, Arsenal fans will have to shell out anywhere between a staggering £985 and £1,955 for a season ticket.

It has led to calls from Liberal Democrat president, Tim Farron, for fans to switch to supporting non-league clubs to boost community football while putting pressure on the bigger teams to lower their prices.

Despite being a sound suggestion in theory, the majority of fans are unlikely to suddenly drop their club in favour of supporting someone else; and it is alleged that football clubs are seemingly wise to this fact, knowing they can carry on exploiting fans’ loyalty and continue to get away with it- giving connotations of an evil villain chuckling loudly to himself.

On paper these seem to be alarming trends and statistics, but after reading the views of so-called long-suffering Gunners fans highlighted in the BBC survey, much is included within the ticket, such as seven extra cup games in the FA Cup and Champions League. Prices for League Cup games are also exceptionally low at just £5 each.

It would also be unfair to suggest that no value for money can be found; with half of Premier League clubs offering season tickets for under £400. It seems that the striking disparity of prices between different clubs that is causing grievance.

But we should not become too downbeat after reading the survey, as it largely fails to take into account what is included in these prices.

This is especially the case when looking at the example of my local club, Brighton & Hove Albion, where season ticket prices range between £425 and £625; but they are the only club to offer fans a policy of paying monthly instead of forking out the full price in one lump sum.

The ticket also includes free use of public transport; a saving of up to £6 a match over the 23 games in the season-something not to be sniffed at.

The fan experience at the Amex is certainly a positive one overall, but there is always room for improvement, especially as one-off match tickets can cost as much as £39 for a supporter sitting in the west stand lower section of the ground.

The BBC survey certainly makes for intriguing reading, but one needs to delve much further into a football club to see whether fans are genuinely being ripped off or if these are merely assumptions made on superficial details.

Newcastle fans all agree Perez must stay on Tyneside

Newcastle fans all agree it would be a big mistake to let Ayoze Perez leave this summer, after a report linked the Spaniard with both Napoli and Real Sociedad.

According to the Chronicle, Perez wants to stay on Tyneside this summer, but both Sociedad and Napoli will try to change his mind.

New Sociedad boss Roberto Olabe wants both Perez and Mikel Merino to help shape his side, after Perez found form towards the end of last season.

Napoli are also in the race, as the Italian giants are likely to undergo a major squad overhaul this summer with Europe’s elite sniffing around their best players.

Perez has been massively inconsistent since his move to Tyneside, but he is one of those players that just gets what fans expect from their stars, and has finally hit the form to reward his hard work in recent months.

Rafael Benitez is pursuing another creative number ten to compete with Perez this summer, but fans are clearly hoping it doesn’t force him out, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

The Complete Premier League History of Liverpool vs Tottenham

Liverpool and Tottenham will face each other for the 52nd time in the Premier League this weekend and there is once again much on the line as both clubs know Sunday’s result could have a decisive impact on the complexion of the top four when we reach the end of the season.

But can history tell us who will triumph and who will toil in the 4.30pm kickoff at Anfield? Here’s the complete Premier League history of Liverpool vs Tottenham…

Head-to-Head

Tottenham may have beaten Liverpool last time out at Wembley, but that victory was very much the exception to the rule. Indeed, Spurs have won just 14 of their 52 encounters with Liverpool, the same number of games they’ve drawn, and the victory in this season’s reverse fixture was their first over the Reds since November 2012. And it only gets worse for the Lilywhites at Anfield, where they’ve taken all three points just twice throughout the entire Premier League era and averaged less than one goal per game.

Tottenham, however, will take comfort from the fact they’ve still managed to keep eleven clean sheets against Liverpool and with Harry Kane chasing down his 100th Premier League goal, another this weekend has a strong chance of resulting in a huge Spurs win. Liverpool, however have averaged 1.7 goals per game against Spurs in the Premier League and the overall gap between the two sides is 28 goals.

The Top Scorer

This fixture’s top scorer chart is unsurprisingly dominated by Liverpool legends, not least including Robbie Fowler, who scored all six of his Premier League goals against Tottenham while playing for Liverpool in the space of eleven games. Robbie Keane, meanwhile, has featured in this fixture for both clubs, but scored all of his goals for Spurs – only managing an assist during his single outing in a Liverpool jersey.

But the big boost for Tottenham is that they boast the only member of the top five who will be involved in Sunday’s game; Kane’s six top flight outings against the Reds have produced four goals and two assists – including a brace and a setup last time out in October. And should Kane bag a hat-trick this weekend, which certainly isn’t out of the question, he’ll overtake Fowler as this fixture’s top scorer.

The shared (cult) hero – Peter Crouch

Some more illustrious names fall into the category of playing for both clubs in the Premier League; Jamie Redknapp, Robbie Keane, Danny Murphy, Nicky Barmby and Brad Friedel to mention a few. But few players struck such a perfect equilibrium of appearances for both teams and few went on to earn cult hero status in quite the same way as Peter Crouch.

While neither group of fans completely warmed to the towering striker, who was often seen as a rather unfashionable front-man, his strike-rate for the Reds wasn’t half bad – 42 goals in 132 appearances across all competitions, despite often featuring as a substitute – although three seasons at White Hart Lane produced just 24 goals. Perhaps most tellingly of why he was never the beacon of popularity, however, his two tenures produced just one trophy – an FA Cup in 2006.

The Classic Contest – Tottenham 3-3 Liverpool

With the end of the season on the horizon, Tottenham and Liverpool both entered this March fixture at White Hart Lane desperate for a win – the 16th-placed former looking to push themselves clear of the relegation zone and the latter needing all three points to have any hope of closing the gap on Manchester United in the title race. Inevitably then, both teams drew. But the fans were left more than satisfied as the players put on a six-goal thriller in which Tottenham took the lead three times and the Reds equalised three times, no leveller coming less than 15 minutes after the prior goal.

Jurgen Klinsmann, during his much-fabled loan spell back in north London after leaving in 1995, opened the scoring after just 13 minutes with a trademark header, but the Reds hit back shortly after as Michael Owen jinked down the left flank before squaring the ball to Steve McManaman for a relatively routine finish.

The iconic David Ginola then put Tottenham ahead once again with a delicate curler that sneaked into the bottom corner under a flailing Brad Friedel, only for Paul Ince to acrobatically net a bicycle kick to make it 2-2.

That lead to a thrilling final ten minutes in which Ramon Vega rose highest at a corner to put the Lilywhites in front. However, McManaman soon capitalised on the Swiss defender’s rather shambolic efforts at the other end to poke home a rebound off the post and ensure the spoils were shared.

Why this young gun is the perfect fit for Liverpool

You wouldn’t think, by looking at their results this season, that Liverpool are anyway in need of extra attacking firepower to add to their 101 Premier League goals this season. Well Brendan Rodgers thinks otherwise.

Adam Lallana has emerged as transfer target number one in what promises to be a crucial summer for Liverpool. There are suggestions that Rodgers is looking to get a deal completed before the England side jet off to complete their World Cup preparation.

Having worked his way up from League One to the Premiership in just two years, Lallana has taken like a duck to water to top level English football. A solid 2012-13 campaign was blown out of the water this year as he was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award, whilst also gaining a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Southampton have grown rapidly into a Premier League force to be reckoned, with Lallana pulling the strings. His nine goals and five assists were a major contributor to the Saints’ eighth-place finish this season.

For all the goals and glory that Liverpool have provided their awed spectators, there is a worrying lack of depth to the squad. The major attacking quartet – Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho – remained largely free of major injury. Whilst they performed spectacularly throughout the vast majority of the 2013-14 season, they had no burden of European football. If the same squad were to continue into the next, then Rodgers will be having to rely on unproven and, so far, underwhelming prospects of Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto, and Fabio Borini.

In gaining the signature of Lallana, Rodgers would add quality whilst increasing the depth of the squad. And this isn’t just any old quality. This is individual, match-winning quality in his own right.

Lallana is as comfortable with his two feet as you will see a current English footballer. This allows him to play in an advanced role anywhere on the field, making him unpredictable and difficult to defend against. He can spot and execute a tricky pass, glide past defenders with consummate ease, and finish calmly in front of goal – each of the last two aspects are demonstrated perfectly by his goal against Hull this season earlier this season. As attacking players go in the Premier League, there are few who could currently claim to touch the all-round capabilities of Lallana.

When you look at Liverpool’s current attacking quartet, each of them are almost equally adept at drifting in and out of spaces, occupying multiple defenders, and drawing fouls through their dangerous running. Whilst Rodgers will be looking to improve defensively this season, he won’t wish to compromise the attacking style. Lallana’s willingness to run at defenders – successfully completing 70 take-ons in the league – and draw fouls – fouled 76 times – will allow him to fit like a hand to a glove if he is to join Liverpool this summer.

One thing which could quite easily go unrecognised in Adam Lallana is his fantastic temperament and attitude. He is an intelligent and thoughtful guy – from seeing him interviewed – and he is focused. Southampton have a history of not only developing their youngsters into outstanding footballers, but also into good men. The likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are testament to this. Lallana’s attitude would fit in nicely with the team and collective ethic that Rodgers has instilled within the current Liverpool side.

If there is an agreeable fee, then it is likely that Liverpool will face much competition to win Lallana’s signature this summer. If Lallana had been at a bigger club, or with the Saints in the Premier League for a longer period of time, I have no doubt that there would be some big foreign clubs sniffing around Southampton. Luckily for all, there probably won’t be.

What’s more with Lallana, his move wouldn’t constitute much of a risk. In terms of the fee, OK it may be. But that fact that Lallana is proven in the top division means that there would be no period of adaptation. He would fit right into the Liverpool side with little trouble. If Rodgers can convince Southampton to part company with him, the move really is a no-brainer.

Adebayor must be patient says Villas-Boas

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has told Emmenuel Adebayor that he will have to wait for first-team football.

The Togo international started Saturday’s Premier League tie against Chelsea on the bench as Jermain Defoe was chosen to lead the line.

The man signed on a permanent deal from Manchester City in the summer has been growing frustrated by his lack of playing time this term, leading to speculation that he may look for a move away from White Hart Lane.

However, AVB has insisted that the centre-forward will have to be patient and wait his turn:

“Obviously, every player wants to play, at the moment we are using the structure of one striker and Defoe has been doing extremely well,” Villas-Boas is quoted as saying by The Metro.

“I think Ade has done extremely well in the games where he has come in for the squad, certainly he is in contention for games where we play with two strikers.

“At the moment we haven’t found the comfort in that formation yet, but in the future when we use it, when we rotate the strikers, he will be back in contention.”

The 28-year-old was a key first-team player under former boss Harry Redknapp last season, which tempted the club to secure a £5m permanent deal.

However, AVB’s system appears to favour the skills of Defoe whose mobility make the team a greater threat on the counter-attack.

Potential consequences: Marcelo Bielsa becoming Leeds manager

Paul Heckingbottom was unable to reverse the downward trend that had set in at Leeds United under Thomas Christiansen and he paid with his job in the weeks following the conclusion of a Championship season that saw his side’s play-off hopes peter out completely.

It was a campaign of regression after Garry Monk took Leeds within touching distance of the play-offs in 2016/17 and the club is in need of genuine star quality, stability and someone to generate a feel-good factor again.

That is much, much easier said than found however, but the man who has reportedly emerged as a genuine contender to take over at Elland Road is 62-year-old former Argentina manager Marcelo Bielsa.

On the face of it, the move looks like a madcap manager being linked with a madcap club, but we’ve decided to take a closer look at the genuine potential consequences if the move did go through…

Leeds would play attacking football

There is a lot of snobbery around defensive football these days but if it got Leeds back into the Premier League, you’d be hard-pushed to find a fan at Elland Road who gave a hoot.

However, it has been a while since the club’s fans were treated to an adventurous style of play but Bielsa would change all that.

His approach to strengthening sides is to embolden them with confidence to play expansively, making chances and utilising smart tactical systems to put opponents on the back foot.

This Leeds squad is currently very workmanlike, which is something of a hangover from the Monk days when results were as good as they’ve been for a while but it wasn’t pretty at times but Bielsa would try to squeeze every last ounce of attacking intent from them. It would certainly be entertaining.

Abel Hernandez would score for fun

The departure of Chris Wood was a hammer blow to Leeds’ chances of promotion last season and in the club’s attempts to keep him or wrangle a larger fee out of Burnley, they didn’t leave themselves enough time to replace him.

That means that securing a genuine goalscorer must be a priority this summer and reports linking them with Hull City striker Abel Hernandez should be music to the ears of Leeds fans.

He has had his injury problems, but when fit, he is more than capable of scoring goals for fun in the Championship.

We’ve touched on above how Hernandez would get no shortage of chances due to Bielsa’s aggressive attacking style, and over a whole season that should see him bag 20 goals, if he and Bielsa both arrive.

A play-off push is on the cards

Obviously, Bielsa and Leeds are two such combustible elements that their relationship could all end in tears and come to a very premature close but imagine that the 62-year-old manages a whole season at Elland Road.

With his attacking style of play, managerial nous and profile to attract quality to one of England’s biggest clubs, a genuine play-off push should not be ruled out.

Leeds flirted with the top six in the opening part of last season and should have made it the season before; they are not a million miles away and Bielsa has more than enough quality to help them bridge the gap.

Everton fans furious as Ademola Lookman looks set to leave club on loan

Despite a positive start to his time in charge at the club, recent poor results have seen Sam Allardyce’s popularity among Everton fans disappear somewhat.

Having picked up just one point from their four Premier League games so far in 2018, it seems that the Blue half of Merseyside are in for a real end-of-season slog.

The arrivals of Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun have certainly strengthened the ranks at Everton but Allardyce has now conceded that the squad is “too big” and departures are likely.

One of these departures, according to latest reports is Ademola Lookman, who the club are happy to send out on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 21-year-old, who is valued at £6.3million by Transfermarkt, has impressed in cameo appearances this season but now looks set to move elsewhere until the summer.

Upon hearing the news of a potential loan-deal for Lookman, Everton fans took to Twitter, and it’s safe to say they were not impressed…

Liverpool boss talks up title chances

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers feels that his team are capable of battling for the Premier League title after their 3-2 win over Fulham.

The Reds trailed twice at Craven Cottage against the rock-bottom Cottagers, but managed to steal all three points courtesy of a Steven Gerrard penalty-kick in injury time.

The result came on the back of a stunning 5-1 demolition of Arsenal at Anfield over the weekend, and moved the Merseysiders to within four points of leaders Chelsea after they could only draw at home with West Brom earlier this week.

Rodgers says that his side are reliant upon their rivals slipping up between now and the end of the season, but that they have a chance of lifting the league trophy later this year:

“We knew this was important,” he told Sky Sports.

“I said to the players these are the games where you arrive in the Champions League – games like this here. You’re playing a team who are fighting, trying to stay in the division.

“We’ve come off the back of a brilliant performance at the weekend and tonight we’ve again got another three points in a different way.

“So it really shows that this team has improved in every facet of the game.

“Seeing Steven (Gerrard) take off his shirt and show off his muscles was great.

“We’re just going to keep pushing and I think we’ve shown enough times that we’re a very good side. We’re chasing, but we need some of them (the teams above) to drop points before anything else can happen.

“We know we have Chelsea and Manchester City to play at home which we’ll look forward to because we’ve been outstanding at home but we’ve just got to take it game by game.

“I’m enjoying watching the team improve and develop as a coach.”

Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho twice pulled Liverpool back from behind after a Kolo Toure own goal and Kieran Richardson effort had put Fulham in the driving seat.

But a mistimed challenge from Sascha Riether on Sturridge gave Gerrard the chance to convert from the spot late on.

Mark Hughes bemoans red card after West Ham defeat

QPR manager Mark Hughes has stated that Samba Diakite’s red card was a key factor in his side’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Monday night.

The Loftus Road club fell behind to an early Matt Jarvis strike, before Ricardo Vaz Te struck a second before half time.

Despite Adel Taarabt pulling one back for the hosts, QPR are still looking for their first win of the campaign and are rooted to the bottom of the table.

African midfielder Diakite replaced Ji-Sung Park on 55 minutes, but was dismissed 20 minutes later after two bookable offences; Hughes feels that the sending off was decisive.

“We were very poor, certainly first half where we were second to every ball, didn’t really get anywhere near the level that we need to get near to get positive results in the Premier League,” he told Sky Sports.

“First half we were just off the pace for whatever reason. Second half we made a better fist of it.

“In fact when Adel scored a great goal that got us a little bit of momentum and at that point I could see us getting a second goal.

“But obviously the sending off has completely killed that momentum and that point it was very, very difficult for us.
