Hathurusinghe wants Bangladesh youngsters to step up in 'exciting' transition period

Head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe has said that Bangladesh need to “move on” from the senior players, calling the current transition phase an “exciting” one for the cricket in the country, ahead of the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand.Regular captain Shakib Al Hasan, his deputy Litton Das, and Taskin Ahmed, the leader of the pace attack, have all been ruled out of the series. Shakib is recovering from a finger injury, Taskin is managing his shoulder niggle, while the BCB has given Litton a paternity break.Related

“It’s challenging to lose that much of experience from any team, especially for Bangladesh,” Hathurusinghe said. “Those guys have been part of the Bangladesh team in every format for more than 15 years. Some of them for ten years. It is however something to look forward to, to see what the youngsters can do.”I think it’s a time that we need to move on from some of the players that have played for a long time. They are not going to be there forever. But this is happening because of many reasons. I think it’s exciting, and it’s an opportunity for some of the youngsters to make their name and then have a long career.”At a time when Bangladesh were enduring a tough time at the World Cup, having lost six out of their seven matches, Hathurusinghe had said that his work has to “start after the World Cup”, adding that he couldn’t do much before the tournament having been appointed just seven months prior. Two weeks after their World Cup exit, he called the phase “a changing guard for Bangladesh cricket” and said that his focus was on developing a team with young players.”I think every team takes pride in winning at home,” Hathurusinghe said. “We are no different. We are looking to win games in our own conditions. We will try to compete on away conditions. That’s the plan. We are very aware of our limitations and strengths. So we are not going to predict big things. We are developing a team now. It’s just a kind of a changing guard for Bangladesh cricket.”The exciting thing is, there are good young players. The challenge is these guys haven’t played enough cricket leading up to [the Test match]. So our planning has to be a little bit better than this going forward and making a bigger pool of players available for every position in bowling and batting. Players challenging the others who are in the team, make our team better.”One immediate concern ahead of the first Test in Sylhet on Tuesday is that most of the Bangladesh players haven’t played red-ball cricket since June. The Bangladesh players who returned from India after the World Cup in mid-November were part of the last NCL first-class match. Hathurusinghe believed that was the most they could do to adjust to the longer format in this short turnaround period.”We used the NCL matches for the guys who played the World Cup as preparation,” he said. “Most of the batters made use of that opportunity. Most of the other players have been playing NCL. This is almost like a new-look Bangladesh team for various reasons. Not by design. I think we are ready as we can be and I’m looking forward to this Test series.”Bangladesh will bank on the vast experience of his spin bowling duo Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who are the side’s second and third-highest overall Test wicket-takers respectively. They have a combined 328 Test wickets, of which 228 are at home. In the last ten years, Taijul has been Bangladesh’s most successful bowler at home too. The pair has also been head and shoulders above the rest of the Bangladesh bowling attack.”There is experience in Taijul and Miraz. Taijul has 177 Test wickets. Definitely he’ll be a leader of the attack and Miraz is playing since 2016 if I remember correctly,” Hathurusinghe said. “Then there’s young (Hasan) Murad and Naeem Hassan. I think playing on this condition and this heat, those guys, spinners mainly, will play a big role.”Sylhet has hosted just one Test so far, when Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh by 151 runs in 2018. Hathurusinghe said Bangladesh, too, were not sure of how the pitch would behave.”We haven’t played as much Test matches [in Sylhet]. One, I think, if my memory serves right. So it’s new for us as well. We don’t know how the wicket is going to behave because we don’t have history here. We will just go by what we see in front of us. It is an unknown at the moment.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Panichelli joined Alaves in 2023 and played eight La Liga games for the Spanish club. His breakout season came last year on his loan spell at Mirandes in Spain's Segunda Division, where he scored 21 goals and registered eight assists, taking the team to the cusp of promotion playoffs. The 22-year-old was the second top-scorer of the league behind Almeria's Luis Suarez and was the club's top scorer during the 2024-25 campaign.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Several teams were on the lookout for Panichelli, with Villarreal being the closest to monitoring the striker with reports suggesting the club wanted to spend the money received from Thierno Barry's transfer to Everton to bring the Argentine to Estadio de la Ceramica. However, Strasbourg's aggressive bidding and their relentless pursuit by hiking their bid from initial fees of €15m (£13m/$17m) to later agreeing on €16.5m showed their determination and was attractive to Panichelli's camp, who were quick to agree on personal terms.

Liam Rosenior's side have had a busy transfer window. The French club qualified for the Conference League last season and have been bringing in reinforcements to secure their spot in the upcoming season. The Ligue 1 club has signed Pape Demba Diop, Maxi Oyedele, and loaned several players from sister club Chelsea like Mike Penders and Kendry Paez. Chelsea players Marc Guiu and Aaron Anselmino have been linked with temporary moves to the French team.

Expect big runs in T20I series finale, but don't go looking for World Cup answers

Big picture: Final T20I crucial and irrelevant at the same time

It has been nearly five years since India lost a bilateral men’s T20I series at home. They have won 13 in that time, and drawn two. It’s a proud record, and it must mean a lot to India’s players and coaching staff, but what does it actually in an attention economy devoted to the ICC event cycle? In one vocal and hard-to-please corner of social media, Sunday’s series-sealing six-wicket win against Afghanistan was notable chiefly for India’s refusal to bat first after winning the toss. They hadn’t challenged themselves enough, and to not challenge yourself with a T20 World Cup imminent is, well, unpardonable. That T20 World Cup is now even more imminent. The series finale in Bengaluru is India’s last T20I before that tournament. That tournament, however, is still nearly five months – and an entire IPL season – away.Bengaluru, then, occupies a strange and hard-to-categorise space. It is both a crucial game in the lead-up to a global tournament and a dead-rubber match far removed from any event of real significance. If it is to mean anything at all, that meaning may only become apparent months from now.How much simpler it must be, then, to merely play the game, and truly live it one ball at a time.

In the spotlight

Axar Patel has had a terrific series with the ball, and Washington Sundar a tidy one, and while neither has had a chance to bat as yet, the presence of two spin-bowling allrounders at Nos. 7 and 8 enabled India’s top order to bat with freedom in the first two T20Is. Conditions in the West Indies – and possibly the USA – may allow India to use this combination during the T20 World Cup, and the flat pitch and short boundaries of Bengaluru will give them another chance to pressure-test it.Afghanistan’s lack of batting firepower has often stopped them from turning their bowlers’ good work into wins against top teams. Their hopes of breaking their T20I duck against India may, therefore, rest on the shoulders of their most dangerous top-order batter. While India shackled Rahmanullah Gurbaz successfully in Mohali, he threatened to break free in Indore, where he rushed to 14 off eight balls before he mishit Ravi Bishnoi to mid-on. Afghanistan will hope Gurbaz can turn those signs of rhythm into a meaningful contribution.

Team news

India may give one or more of Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav and Avesh Khan a go in Bengaluru with the series already in the bag.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Shivam Dube, 5 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 6 Rinku Singh, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Arshdeep Singh, 10 Avesh Khan/Ravi Bishnoi/Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Mukesh Kumar.Qais Ahmad was the leading wicket-taker in Afghanistan’s last series before this one, against UAE. Pitch and conditions

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium is renowned for its run-fests, but there are times when the venue belies that reputation. The most recent T20I here, a thriller in December, was heavily influenced by the spinners, with Bishnoi and Axar combining to take 3 for 43 in their eight overs as India successfully defended 160 against Australia. That match came close on the heels of the ODI World Cup, which featured five Bengaluru games. The groundstaff have had plenty of time since then to prepare a fresh pitch for this game, so more typical Chinnaswamy conditions can be expected. There was a generous tinge of green on the pitch on the eve of the match, though much of the grass cover is likely to be trimmed before the start of play. The forecast promises a clear, pleasant evening with temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius.

Stats and trivia

  • Mohammad Nabi is 67 runs away from becoming the second Afghanistan batter to score 2000 in T20Is
  • Nabi (98) and Najibullah Zadran (95) are closing in on 100 sixes in T20Is
  • Axar needs one wicket to become the ninth India bowler to 50 in T20Is
  • Of India players with at least 200 T20I runs, Rinku Singh (176.07), Yashasvi Jaiswal (163.81) and Shivam Dube (149.45) have three of the four best strike rates. Suryakumar Yadav (171.55) is the other member of the top four

Quotes

“Coming to India is pretty tough, but it gives us a good base about where we are and it exposes you in areas that perhaps need improvement. So that’s great for us. Especially going forward to the [T20] World Cup and wanting to be as good as we were in the previous 50-over World Cup and hopefully we can go even better.”

'Very humbling' – Starc on reaching 350 Test wickets and closing in on Dennis Lillee

The fast bowler says the Brisbane pitch is “a little bit too firm” for the pink ball

Mitchell Starc acknowledged that it was “humbling” to pass 350 wickets as a summer of landmarks continued for Australia’s Test attack, but he will only really sit back and reflect on personal achievements when he hangs up his boots. After Nathan Lyon’s 500th Test wicket along with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood crossing 250 this season, it was Starc’s turn to tick off another landmark on the opening day at the Gabba. When he had Alick Athanaze caught behind, he became the fifth Australia bowler to 350 Test wickets. He finished the day with 4 for 68 and is now four wickets away from overtaking Dennis Lillee’s tally (355), which would make him the country’s second-most prolific quick behind Glenn McGrath (563).”Numbers are nice, [it’s] something else to reflect on when I’m all done. Still got some wickets to take,” Starc said. “Nice to have an impact today, go past that one…Gaz [Lyon] was saying there’s another 150 to go.Related

A day of positives and progress for West Indies

“They are all nice things to tick off and very humbling [to close in on Lillee] but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Need 20 wickets to win and we’ll all reflect on [the landmarks] when we are finished, sitting around with a beer at a golf course somewhere. At the moment we are just enjoying our cricket as a group of players.”Early in the season, during the opening Test against Pakistan in Perth, Starc made some mid-match adjustments and said he had been searching for “that perfect feeling” throughout the summer. He was pleased with his rhythm and the pace he was able to generate on the opening day in Brisbane.Three of Starc’s inroads came in the first session when Australia made good use of the new ball to leave West Indies 64 for 5. But life became tougher for the bowlers after that as the pink ball softened and it wasn’t until the second new ball that Starc struck again to remove Kavem Hodge.Starc’s record with the pink ball is outstanding – he now has 65 wickets at 18.09 from 12 day-night Tests – and he has come to believe that the key to the format is the pitch and its impact on the ball. This Brisbane surface, he said, was a little on the firm side to be ideal, which meant the ball became soft within the first hour, whereas Adelaide, which traditionally hosts the day-night encounter in Australia, has a more forgiving pitch.”It comes down to the wicket, which I think Adelaide has got right,” he said. “Because of the ball, we know it goes softer at certain stages depending on the wicket, think there’s a certain cushion to what they make at Adelaide, which is why it’s been such a good pink-ball Test in Adelaide.”Think this wicket is pretty similar to the game we played Pakistan [in 2016-17]. In that game [the ball] went soft pretty early, there were a lot of dead patches where it was hard to score and wasn’t much in the wicket for the bowlers. Pakistan were about 450 chasing 490. Feels a bit like a similar wicket where it’s a little bit too firm. Think it would be a fantastic red-ball wicket, but probably too firm for the pink ball.”

'That’s a question for his club' – MLS All-Star coach Nicolás Estevez confirms two Inter Miami players absent from training, 'hopeful' Lionel Messi will still make his ASG debut

At the first training session for the MLS All-Stars on Monday, two major names were missing: Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. The match is set to take place on Wednesday at Q2 Stadium in Austin against the Liga MX All-Stars, but uncertainty remains over whether Inter Miami’s two stars – especially Messi – will take the field, as he has recently carried a heavy workload with his club.

MLS All-Star coach Nicolás Estevez was cautious when asked about Messi’s potential participation, saying, “That’s a question for his club. I just coach and use the players I’m given. I hope so – I’m very optimistic and I hope he can be there."

Estevez outlined how playing time will be managed for players taking part in Wednesday’s game. There’s still no clarity on how many minutes Messi will get – if any – especially after Javier Mascherano suggested the Miami star should be rested.

"The idea will always be to prioritize the player's well-being, to take care of their fitness and health," Estevez said, noting that the MLS regular season returns with games just two days after the ASG. "Those who play on Friday will be limited to 30 minutes, and those who play on Saturday will have a 45-minute limit. There are players scheduled to play on Saturday who are dealing with some discomfort, so we’ll be cautious."

Getty Images SportWHAT ESTEVEZ SAID

The Spanish coach understands the responsibility that comes with leading the MLS All-Stars.

"We have to understand the match load these players are carrying, so we have a huge responsibility to take care of their health," he said. "Today we had active recovery on the field. We want them to compete but also to have fun – football is about interactions, and I want to bring them together in the positions they’ll play in the match. They’ve come in with great mindset, excitement, and the will to win."

Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood could play both West Indies and New Zealand T20Is

David Warner, who has signed up at the ILT20, is set to feature in both series, while Tim David could play too

Alex Malcolm20-Jan-2024A lighter-than-expected workload for Australia’s three-format fast bowlers across the Test summer so far could allow the selectors to pick them for one or both of the upcoming T20I series against West Indies and New Zealand, which are the only six T20Is Australia play before the T20 World Cup in June.Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc have got through four Tests unscathed so far, with none of the four home matches reaching a fifth day. Neither has had to bowl more than 38 overs in a game, and Cummins is the only one who has bowled 20 overs in an innings more than once; but he has only done it twice in eight innings across the summer. All three are being rested from the ODIs against West Indies in early February, and it seemed likely they would be rested from the T20Is too. But given how their workloads have unfolded across the summer, there may be an opportunity to play one or both of those series, with the selectors meeting on Monday to finalise those squads.Related

“We’ll give some thought to that,” Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said. “There’ll be some that may play, and there’ll be some that might not play. It’ll be different squads [for each series]. We’ll look to potentially be at full strength for the New Zealand series.”We’ve got six games before the World Cup. A lot of the World Cup planning is in place at the moment. We’ll try to be as close to full strength for the New Zealand series as possible. The West Indies series is slightly nuanced.”There were concerns over how all three would come out of the ODI World Cup into the Test summer, but those fears have disappeared as they are in great shape and keen to play all seven Tests this season, including two against New Zealand in early March.Australia’s selectors are wary of the workload that both Cummins and Starc will have at the IPL as big-money signings, meaning they could be rested from the West Indies series before only playing part of the New Zealand series. However, Hazlewood would be the likeliest of the three to play both T20I series, given he is not going to play in the IPL unless an opportunity arises to be a replacement player.None of the three played any of Australia’s eight T20Is last year, as they were all rested in order to be fit for Test assignments and the ODI World Cup. Australia even defied the odds to win a T20 World Cup in the UAE in 2021 and an ODI World Cup in India in 2023 with an attack comprising Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc and only one specialist spinner in Adam Zampa. Glenn Maxwell was the second spinner and first-choice fifth bowler, with other overs being provided by allrounders. It appears as if Australia will back the same structure in for the T20 World Cup on the slower pitches in the West Indies, with Australia not scheduled to play any matches in the US.David Warner is set to return from the ILT20 for Australia duty•AFP/Getty ImagesDavid Warner to play both seriesMcDonald confirmed that David Warner would be selected for both the West Indies and New Zealand T20Is, and will be required to leave the ILT20 to return to Australia by February 7. Tim David is in the same boat, having signed for MI Emirates, and will likely return to Australia if selected. Marcus Stoinis, who is at the SA20 with Durban’s Super Giants, might also return home early if he is selected for both of Australia’s series as expected.”Davey will be picked,” McDonald said. “He will come back from the ILT20. I think most of our players that are going over there are due back in on [February 7] in preparation for the [first] T20 in Hobart.”However, Australia are still yet to confirm who will captain the team at the T20 World Cup. Despite leading Australia to the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup last year, Cummins is very unlikely to be named T20I captain, having not led the team previously in that format.Mitchell Marsh captained the side on an interim basis in South Africa last year with great success, leading an inexperienced group to a 3-0 series sweep. He was also Australia’s vice-captain during the ODI World Cup, having led the ODI team too in South Africa. Immediately after the World Cup, Matthew Wade captained the T20I side in Marsh’s absence for the five-match T20I series in India.Meanwhile, McDonald will not coach the ODI and T20I series against West Indies in order to spend some extra time at home ahead of the New Zealand T20I and Test tour, although he is likely to be with the squad for some of the matches. Assistant coach Daniel Vettori will take the reins for those two series, having rested during the Adelaide Test. Fellow assistants Andre Borovec and Michael Di Venuto both coached Australia’s T20I sides last year in India and South Africa, respectively, when McDonald remained at home.

Snater four-for leaves Lancashire in bother

Essex take grip with ball before Khushi thrashes quick fifty to cut into deficit

ECB Reporters Network19-Apr-2024

Shane Snater picked up a four-wicket haul•Getty Images

Shane Snater rediscovered the form with the ball that deserted him last season to drive a massive hole in some fragile Lancashire batting on a rain-shortened day at Chelmsford. The Zimbabwe-born Dutch international blasted out the top three in the Lancashire order at a personal cost of one run before returning to add a fourth for figures of 4 for 42. Snater took just eight expensive wickets in an injury-ravaged campaign last year, having taken a combined 67 in the two previous seasons. He now has 10 wickets in three Vitality County Championship matches this April. He was ably supported by fellow seamer Sam Cook, who managed to marry both hostility and parsimony to finish with 3 for 18 from 14 overs, as Lancashire limped to 146 all out. In 12 overs under the floodlights, Feroze Khushi refused to hang about with nine fours in a whirlwind 53 from 33 balls as Essex knocked 68 off the deficit for the loss of his wicket, caught in the slips off George Balderson.A mid-morning downpour encouraged Essex captain Tom Westley to ask Lancashire to bat on a green-tinged wicket and local knowledge proved decisive inside the 45 minutes possible before lunch once Snater had been introduced. The seamer removed Keaton Jennings to a magnificent flying catch in the gully by Matt Critchley in his first over, and trapped the freewheeling Luke Wells plumb lbw in the next.Wells had plundered 13 runs – including a straight-driven four and a six flicked off his legs – in a Jamie Porter over that led to the bowler’s departure from the attack after conceding 22 runs from three overs. The brief morning session completed, the players had barely reached the pavilion for lunch when the latest April shower lengthened the interval by more than an hour and three-quarters. When they did return in mid-afternoon, Josh Bohannon faced just nine more scoreless balls before he edged Snater and Dean Elgar took a stunning one-handed catch low down at first slip.Cook bowled unchanged for nearly two of the truncated sessions and gained reward in his ninth over when Balderson failed to withdraw his bat in time and was caught behind.George Bell hit two of his four career half-centuries at Chelmsford last season, and added a high of 99 against Hampshire last week, but Snater’s first ball after tea had him bang to rights in front of his stumps for just 4. However, his one scoring stroke in 22 balls had been a sumptuous straight drive that was arguably the most aesthetic shot of the day.The Lancashire slide continued apace when Matty Hurst hung his bat out to Cook and was a second victim for wicketkeeper Michael Pepper. Tom Bruce got a leading edge to chip Porter to mid-on before 19-year-old Noah Thain claimed a wicket on debut with his third ball in first-class cricket when Tom Bailey steered to second slip. However, the ninth-wicket partnership between Jack Blatherwick and Will Williams proved to be the biggest of the innings, helping to repair the damage of 92 for 8 with some lusty hitting. With a six apiece, the pair put on fifty in 36 balls before Blatherwick went for another heave to Simon Harmer’s second ball of the game and holed out on the long-leg boundary. Cook wrapped up the innings when he had Nathan Lyon held at point to leave Williams not out on 32.
