Delhi Capitals owners latest to acquire UAE T20 League team

Joins owners of Mumbai Indians and Manchester United FC in owning teams in the upcoming tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Feb-2022GMR Group, part-owners of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the IPL, have become the third group to acquire a team at the upcoming UAE T20 League, expected to start later this year, after Lancer Capital, the owners of Manchester United Football Club, and Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited, the owners of Mumbai Indians.”Our team has 14-seasons’ experience in managing the franchise process, through our Delhi Capital team’s involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and we will integrate the same elements of these processes into UAE T20 League and help establish it as a premier and an integral part of the global cricket ecosystem,” GM Rao, group chairman of the GMR Group, said in a statement on Wednesday.Kiran Kumar Grandhi, the corporate chairman of the group, said, “UAE has a world-class niche of cross-cultural individuals with a big cricket fan following and excellent cricket infrastructure. We, at GMR Group, based on our years of experience in the IPL will harness to create a thriving cricket environment to budding players which will infinitely excite cricket aficionados.Related

“From our solid supportive management, we will bring best practices, processes, top-notch coaches, players, and support staff to have an unparalleled professional team.”The six-team league has been sanctioned by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), and the plan originally was to host the first edition by the end of March this year. Though that isn’t likely at this stage, the ECB said in the statement that it “remains well on track to be played in 2022 where senior committee members are encouraged by the enormous interest shown from a number of high-profile individuals and well-established corporates from across the world”.Khalid Al Zarooni, the ECB vice-chairman, said, “The standing of this League, across the cricketing world, is vitally important to us, and we have aligned ourselves with partners that share the same values toward the game; holding its spirit, integrity and longevity to the highest regard.”The ECB is also hoping that the league, once it takes flight, helps improve the playing standards within the UAE as well. “At its heart, the UAE T20 League will provide this opportunity for players within the Associate structure to play alongside world-class internationals and be provided with a much-needed opportunity to showcase their skills to a wider audience,” ECB general secretary Mubashshir Usmani said. While the owners of Manchester United FC and Mumbai Indians are already team owners in the league, the owners of the Knight Riders franchise (Kolkata and Trinbago teams) are also understood to be interested in taking over one of the teams. The statement said that the “remaining franchise partnerships” would be announced shortly.

Not Gordon or Isak: Newcastle have another £100m star in the making

Despite the constraints of FFP and PSR, Newcastle spent a sizeable £124m in the 2023/24 season, signing four players on permanent deals, and one player on a season-long loan.

The Magpies also let go of Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood to recoup some of their money, bringing in around £23m for Saint-Maximin and around £15m for Wood, who is now smashing it at Nottingham Forest with eight goals in 11 games this season.

Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, and Yankuba Minteh were three of the permanent signings, but the biggest signing of the summer was Sandro Tonali, who signed from AC Milan for around £55m.

Sandro Tonali's time at Newcastle

Before joining Newcastle, Tonali racked up 130 appearances for AC Milan in Italy, scoring seven goals and providing 13 assists in 9,158 minutes played.

Sandro Tonali

Tonali is a highly-rated midfielder, who specialises in ball carrying in central areas, has a long passing range, and can win his duels going box to box in the middle of the park.

The Italian was out for the majority of last season through a betting suspension but has returned to the Newcastle starting XI as of late, making 11 appearances and, providing two assists in 562 minutes.

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Tonali scored this week for Italy in their 1-0 victory over Belgium in the Nations League, keeping them top of Group 2 in League A.

But, Newcastle may have a midfielder even better than Tonali coming through their own ranks, and he also made his Newcastle debut in 2023, like the Italian.

Newcastle's £100m man in the making

Lewis Miley came through Newcastle’s academy system, making his Premier League debut in May 2023. The 18-year-old has gone on to make 28 appearances in his short career thus far, scoring one goal and providing four assists in 1,744 minutes.

The young English midfielder is already valued at around £18m at just 18-years-old, and that has risen from a value of just £2m in the past 12 months, according to Transfermarkt. If Miley continues on this meteoric rise, there is no reason he cannot reach the same value as some of the finest English midfielders around.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Take Declan Rice, for instance. Like Miley, he made his first-team bow at West Ham at a young age before being purchased for over £100m by Arsenal. The reason? Well, he’s a damn fine player but being English certainly helped his cause too.

Miley, whose tall 6 foot 2 frame makes him a strong duel winner, which is shown by his defensive metrics. Last term, he actually made 2.35 tackles per 90, and 1.63 blocks per 90, which was more than both Rice and Tonali managed.

The youngster has a good engine, allowing him to go box-to-box efficiently in a similar manner to Rice, impacting all phases for his side, a key trait for midfielders in the modern era.

Lewis Miley scores for Newcastle

Whilst the 18-year-old’s progression metrics are slightly worse than Rice and Tonali, he still shows an air of calm on the ball, looking to play through the lines, take the ball in tight spaces, and help in the attacking zones, as shown by his 2.16 shot-creating actions per 90.

With Arsenal’s club-record man eventually commanding a £105m fee by the time he was 24, Miley could well reach that same level, as we have already seen exponential growth from the teenager in the past 12 months.

If those progression numbers begin to improve, and the Toon teenager snatches the spot of Tonali, his value could be set to soar once again. Newcastle are already hoping for £100m for Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon has also been touted at a similar price tag. Next could well be Miley.

Imagine him & Rashford: Man Utd can sign Amorim’s dream wing-back for £36m

The Premier League makes its return this weekend following the third international break of the season so far, and with it, Manchester United will get to see new boss Ruben Amorim in the dugout for the first time.

The 39-year-old has been tasked with ultimately leading the Red Devils back to the glory of years past, but the immediate objective will be to try and get the club back into the Champions League for next year.

However, while he can certainly help with his tactical approach and man-management skills, he’ll need his players to rediscover their form of two seasons ago, notably Marcus Rashford.

Fortunately, the club were linked with a player who could help the Englishman get back to his very best last week, a player who could be the manager’s perfect wing-back.

Rashford's recent form

Just two years ago, Rashford was in the form of his life for United.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

By the time the 22/23 campaign ended, the Englishman had racked up a frankly ridiculous haul of 30 goals and 11 assists in 56 appearances, equating to a sensational average of a goal involvement every 1.36 games.

However, his form did not continue into last season, and instead, he went from one of the most dangerous forwards in all of Europe to someone who could only score eight goals and provide six assists in 43 games.

Unfortunately, this dramatic nosedive in form has seemingly continued into this year, and while he’s looked slightly better here and there, two of his four goals and one of his three assists came against League One Barnsley in the League Cup.

In all, before the new manager was appointed, things did not look good for the Manchester-born attacker’s future prospects at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, the arrival of Amorim gives him a chance to start again, and if recent reports linking the club to an up-and-coming left-back are accurate, then there is still every chance that the local lad will rediscover his form at United.

The signing who could revive Rashford

Okay, so this exciting left-back in question is Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, who, according to reports from Spain, is now a player Manchester United are intensely interested in and have already held ‘initial inquiries’ over.

There is no mention of a potential price in the story, but reports from earlier this year claimed that while reluctant to sell the Hungarian international, the Cherries would be willing to let him go for around £35m.

Now, that might sound like a lot of money for a player who’s not exactly a household name at the moment, but in reality, it might well be fair value.

For example, in 11 appearances so far this season, the 21-year-old has already picked up two assists.

Furthermore, while his output of a single assist last season is far from headline-grabbing stuff, it has to be looked at within the context of playing for a team that finished in the bottom half of the Premier League, so defensive solidity was and still is priority number one for the Vrbas-born star.

With that said, you can get a good idea of his attacking abilities by looking at his form with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, where he scored five goals and provided eight assists in just 57 games, equating to an average of a goal involvement once every 4.38 games.

Moreover, his underlying numbers from the Europa Conference League in the 22/23 campaign make for some impressive reading, with FBref ranking him in the top 8% of full-backs for assists, the top 9% for non-penalty expected goals, and the top 17% for total shots all per 90.

In all, with the defensive maturity he has shown at the Vitality Stadium in the last season and a bit, combined with his attacking ability demonstrated in the Netherlands, it feels like the “insane talent”, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, would make the perfect wing-back in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.

Moreover, having a wing-back who can defend and bomb forward can only help Rashford in his quest to rediscover his form.

It should come as no surprise that during his incredible form in the 22/23 season, Luke Shaw started most games behind him, whereas he was unfit for most of last season and hasn’t played this year.

The 27-year-old forward needs a consistent and reliable partner on the left to help him do what he does best, and given his abilities, that partner could well be Kerkez.

Ultimately, it might not be a name that excites most fans, but based on his form in the last couple of seasons, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co should be doing what they can to sign the Bournemouth star in 2025.

£18m duo injured, Aaronson decision made: Leeds predicted XI & team news

Leeds United have the chance to remain in the automatic promotion spots with a win against Middlesbrough at Elland Road in the Championship this evening.

The Whites are currently second in the table and a draw could see them move to the top, before Sheffield United play on Wednesday, although a win could be needed if Burnley win their match tonight.

Daniel Farke’s side are fighting for automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking, after his team finished third in the division last season.

The West Yorkshire outfit beat Norwich City in the play-off semi-finals before losing 1-0 to Southampton at Wembley in the final, consigning them to another year in the second tier.

Their opponents this evening will be no pushovers, though, and it is unlikely to be as straightforward as the 2-0 win over Derby County last time out at Elland Road was.

Middlesbrough have won four of their last six matches in the Championship and secured a 1-1 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor in their last game.

Leeds will also be well aware of the threats that Michael Carrick’s team pose because they have already played them at Elland Road in the League Cup this season.

The last time Leeds played Middlesbrough at Elland Road

Back in August, the Whites were drawn at home to the Teesiders in the League Cup and Farke handed rare starts to Max Wober, Karl Darlow, Joe Gelhardt, and Patrick Bamford.

However, the likes of Junior Firpo, Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu, Joel Piroe, and Brenden Aaronson, among others, were also in the starting line-up, which shows that the manager put out a strong side with the intention of getting through to the next round.

Anfernee Dijksteel put the away team 1-0 up in the 50th minute when the right-back burst forward and, far too easily, dribbled past Rodon in the box before slotting an excellent left-footed finish into the bottom left corner.

Delano Burgzorg doubled their lead ten minutes later after Josh Coburn threaded a through ball to send him towards the edge of the box, where the winger cut inside of Rodon before firing past Darlow.

The third and final goal for Middlesbrough came when Isaiah Jones was given far too much space around the edge of the box and his deflected shot fell perfectly for Coburn to tap into an almost empty net.

It ended 3-0 to Carrick’s men, who created four ‘big chances’ to Leeds’ two, and supporters will be hoping that Farke learned enough from that heavy defeat to prepare the team better for tonight’s match.

Latest Leeds United injury news

In his pre-match press conference ahead of this game, the German head coach revealed that multiple players are either out or are serious doubts to feature at Elland Road.

Firpo is one star who will definitely be out for the Whites. He had to come off in the first half of the 2-0 win over Derby on Saturday and Farke has confirmed that the left-back has suffered a hamstring injury that is set to keep him out of action for up to six weeks.

The Dominican Republic international, who was signed from Barcelona for £13m in 2021, has provided one goal and three assists in 15 appearances in the Championship this season, and his attacking thrust could be missed down the left flank.

Firpo is not the only Leeds full-back who could be missing through injury tonight, though, as Farke also revealed that Jayden Bogle is a big doubt with a muscle issue.

The Whites swooped to sign the English defender from Championship rivals Sheffield United for a fee of £5m in the summer, and he has started 18 of the club’s 19 league matches to date, which speaks to how much trust the manager has in him to perform week-in-week-out.

It is not all bad news, however, as Farke also stated that right-back Sam Byram is back in training and could return to the squad against Middlesbrough, which would make him a like-for-like replacement for Bogle.

Byram is not the only player who could come back into the starting line-up for Leeds tonight, though, as the manager could make multiple changes to the side.

Predicted Leeds line-up to take on Middlesbrough

The £18m duo of Firpo and Bogle both potentially being out will mean that two new full-backs will need to come into the team, which could open the door for Byram and Wober to start.

After Firpo went off injured against Derby, the Austria international came on at left-back and scored the second goal for the Whites, whilst also helping the side to keep a clean sheet.

max-wober-leeds-united-academy-transfer-loan-james-debayo-farke

That could mean that the defence lines up with Illan Meslier in goal and a back four of Byram, Rodon, Pascal Struijk, and Wober, with Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell as the double pivot in front of the backline.

The attack is where the German boss could make unenforced changes to the starting line-up, starting with Wilfried Gnonto coming in for Manor Solomon, as suggested by Football FanCast.

Farke could also decide to remove Brenden Aaronson from the team after a string of underwhelming performances in the number ten position for Leeds in recent weeks.

As you can see in the table above, the USA international has started the last six Championship matches for the West Yorkshire outfit and has not contributed with a single goal, ‘big chance’ created, or assist.

Farke could take him out of the team by unleashing academy graduate Mateo Joseph in a new role as an attacking midfielder behind Joel Piroe.

The Spain U21 international has created four ‘big chances’ and provided three assists in nine starts in the Championship, which shows that he can offer quality as a creator and that is why it could be worth seeing how he fares in a deeper role.

This would make the starting XI as follows… Meslier; Byram, Rodon, Struijk (C), Wober; Tanaka, Rothwell; James, Joseph, Gnonto; Piroe

QPR now join race to sign £15,000-p/w striker in January transfer window

Queens Park Rangers are interested in signing a “really exciting” striker in the January transfer window, according to a recent report. The Rs made it five unbeaten and back-to-back wins on Wednesday night, as they beat Oxford United 2-0, a result that sees them climb to 19th in the Championship table, four points adrift of the relegation zone.

QPR considering hiring former PL left-back as new manager – report

QPR are rooted to the bottom of the Championship table after a dismal start to the season.

1 ByBrett Worthington Nov 13, 2024 QPR news and updates

It was another impressive night for QPR in front of their home fans, but it could have potentially come at a cost, as Marti Cifuentes revealed a concerning update on midfielder Nicolas Madsen after the game.

Cifuentes said: “For the second game in a row, he gets a big impact around his ankle, shin, and calf all this area. He was very painful, so immediately when he went out, he told me that he would try but that he was not feeling very confident. Hopefully, it will just be a knock, and he will be ready for Saturday.”

Despite the upturn in form in recent weeks, QPR will still have their eye on potential business for January, as they look to climb the table and not continue this fight at the bottom. It was reported earlier this week that QPR are among the teams interested in signing Louie Barry on loan from Aston Villa.

The forward is expected to be recalled from his loan at Stockport County and then sent out to a higher-level team next month. The Rs could face a difficult battle to win this race, as Middlesbrough are said to be leading this charge, and Leeds United are also interested in signing Barry.

QPR join transfer race to sign Leeds outcast According to Football League World,Queens Park Rangers are interested in signing Joe Gelhardtfrom Leeds in January, which would perhaps pave the way for the aforementioned Barry to move to Elland Road. The 22-year-old looks set to leave Yorkshire in some capacity in January, as he’s fallen way down the pecking order under Daniel Farke.

Celtic transfer target Joe Gelhardt in action for Leeds United.

Gelhardt, who earns £15,000 a week, has played just three times for Leeds this season; two have been substitute appearances in the league, which add up to a total of nine minutes of football, and the other was 63 minutes in the Carabao Cup.

It was reported earlier this week that Gelhardt is keen on joining Rangers after they made their interest clear, but Leeds were undecided as they didn’t know whether to sell the striker or loan him out. But Gelhardt has another option to consider, as QPR are also interested in signing him in January.

Football League World reports that the 22-year-old, who has been dubbed “really exciting” by Jamie Redknapp, is on the Rs’ radar ahead of next month, but they face plenty of competition to secure a transfer, as a host of other Championship teams are also interested. It is likely that QPR will only be able to afford a loan deal for Gelhardt, so it will depend on what Leeds want to do with the striker.

'Challenging for the league next season' – CBS Sports analyst Micah Richards on Man City's future, why Real Madrid will win Champions League, and that bet with Jude Bellingham

The Paramount+ analyst joined Mic'd up to talk Man City, UCL and Club World Cup impact on the Premier League

Micah Richards has been forced to watch his beloved Manchester City crumble all season. This has been a campaign of false dawns for City, who dropped out of the Premier League title race early, and have been struggling to stay in the race for Champions League football ever since.

Richards, though, who is an ambassador for the club and still has close ties with the dressing room, sees this chaotic campaign as nothing more than an aberration.

"I think next season, with a transfer window, we'll see them getting back to somewhere we've seen over the last couple of seasons. They've still got a top manager," he tells GOAL.

It will take some work, though. City are old. Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan are all past their best. Rodri's season-ending ACL tear certainly hasn't helped. A new era may have to begin.

"But do I think they'll be challenging for the league next season?" Richards says. "100 percent. I really do. I don't think it's a massive fix. I just think we need some fresh faces going to the dressing room, couple of key players back fit."

Richards is more than just a City fan. He covers soccer for CBS Sports. His face is seen with every Champions League phase as part of the always-entertaining pre and post match content on Paramount+.

His chemistry with Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry and Kate Scott has led to a litany of viral moments – some of which might pop up again as the quartet go pitchside for the EFL Cup Final on Sunday, with Newcastle United and Liverpool set to face off at London's Wembley Stadium (kickoff is 12:30 pm ET, streamed on Paramount+).

Richards knows how to have fun, but his analysis remains strong, and in a European season defined by its unpredictability, he insists that Real Madrid are going to win this thing. And that could be a problem as – yes – Madrid star Jude Bellingham owes him a celebration.

Richards spoke on Man City's struggles, the appeal of the EFL Cup, and why Real Madrid are still his Champions League favorites in the latest edition of Mic’d Up, a recurring feature in which GOAL US taps into the perspective of broadcasters, analysts, and other pundits on the state of soccer in the U.S. and abroad.

AFPON MAN CITY

GOAL: So, let's keep it simple, what's gone wrong with Man City this season?

RICHARDS: There's inevitably going to be a drop off at some point. It's coincided with injuries at times in key positions, you know, key players getting a little bit older, and then some of the players' loss of form and loss of confidence. It is strange for me to see because this group, and I know a lot of them, got a good relationship with all of them and they're all confident boys. What I mean by that is, leading in games and going to the Brentford game, the 2-2 draw, the Feyernood game, conceding three goals, and that's not what we used to see.

They've come to the end of the cycle in terms of that energy, and I still think they're all top players, but I just think in terms of what their bodies are allowing them to do. They've come to the end of that, but I think going forward, the signing of Marmoush, even Khusanov – who had a tough start with Chelsea, a couple of days training in him because of injuries. I think next season, with a transfer window, we'll see them getting back to somewhere we've seen over the last couple of seasons. They've still got a top manager.

GOAL: And Marmoush looks a proper player, too.

RICHARDS: Yeah, he's sharp – really sharp. What I like about him is that he runs in behind. How many times do we see players come to feet? No one wants to run in behind. But with the space that teams are creating now, I just think he's going to be a real hit for Man City.

GOAL: Is it fair to put a time on when City will be back at the top? Is it next season? Or a couple of years?

RICHARDS: Next season I think they will be back. They need a good preseason, but obviously they have got the Club World Cup, which is more games. Not just this season, there are pundits who have been talking about burnout for the players for a long time now. The number of games that Man City have played over the last four years, it's been ridiculous, really. And as long as they don't feel fatigued after the Club World Cup, I don't think this is going to be a two, three, four-year rebuild. I think it's going to be the next season.

Will we get to the heights of two, three seasons, or the season where Man City are getting 100 points in the Premier League? Probably not. Everything was working together so well at that time. But do I think they'll be challenging for the league next season? 100 percent. I really do. I don't think it's a massive fix. I just think we need some fresh faces going to the dressing room, couple of key players back fit… I think they're going to challenge next year.

AdvertisementFIFAON THE CLUB WORLD CUP

GOAL: I wanted to touch on the Club World Cup. It's massive in the States, but what do you think the European perspective is?

RICHARDS: I like to give everything a chance. Even the Champions League this year, before it changed, we thought, there's going to be more games, it's not going to be as exciting. Don't forget, just recently, they took away the away goals rule. So you change into the league format, and then a playoff. I actually think it's been a really good competition. I think it's been more enjoyable. I think teams look like they have more of a chance. Celtic, for example, going into the last minute before Alphonso Davies scored.

So, as for the Club World Cup. I don't want to write it off. The only thing I've got against it is that there are more games. I think if you're a fan, you're a journalist, you want to see the players at the best and at the peak of their powers, don't you? I think the Premier League has sort of suffered from that this this season. I think with Liverpool, they've been really good, but I still think they've got another gear to go.

And we're nearly at the end of the season – that sort of thing. Arsenal, they've had tough injuries, especially in forward areas, and the Man City have not been what they have been. So to add more games, I just worry the level of competition isn't going to be at the level that we all expect. Because when you see Haaland, or when you see all the greatest players, like Mbappe or Vinicius or whoever it may be… you want to see him at the highest level this season. Especially from Man City's point of view, I just think the games have really taken a toll on what they could provide in terms of output.

GettyON WHAT THE EFL CUP MEANS

GOAL: I wanted to ask about the League Cup. You're going to be pitchside. How important is the competition these days? Is it only relevant if you win it?

RICHARDS: You've still got the FA Cup, which is the oldest cup in history over here. You've obviously got the Premier League and the Champions League. The Premier League was always the highest in my opinion. If you win the league over 38 games, that's special. Then you've got the elite of the game playing in the Champions League, so a lot of people believe the Champions League is the top – Jamie Carragher is one of them!

But the league has always been my thing. The League Cup might not have the same influence as maybe an FA Cup or the Premier League, but I still think it's important. Nowadays it's so hard to win anything. I think teams are a lot more competitive. Does that mean it's the biggest one? No, I wouldn't put it on the same level as the Premier League. But it's still massive for confidence. If you look at Liverpool, they've gone out of the Champions League, if they were to lose the League Cup… I wouldn't say they won't care, but they still want to win. At the end of the day, when you finish your career, and you've got four or five League Cups, a couple of leagues, a Champions League, they all count.

It's going to be a beautiful day at Wembley, and to get to do it for CBS pitchside… I can't wait. It's still a big moment in a player's career. I was one of those players who didn't quite disrespect the League Cup, but I thought "Oh, it's not one of the big ones." But now, looking back, I wish I would have taken it a lot more seriously, because it's so hard to win a trophy. I can't wait to cover it. It's gonna be an absolutely brilliant game.

AFPON LIVERPOOL LOSING IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

GOAL: So, Liverpool losing in the Champions League… that was interesting! What did you make of that game?

RICHARDS: I thought it was two teams playing brilliantly well. I thought, PSG, in the first leg, absolutely dominated it. I thought they should have scored four or five goals. Liverpool got away with one. Harvey Elliot got the goal. And then I thought, "OK, Anfield, let's see. Let's see what it's like. Let's see what's really happening." Liverpool started so well. They had so many chances.

But, PSG, now they're a good side. They're a good side. And I think then the better side over two legs, which I was very surprised with. When you lose a Neymar or lose a Messi or an Mbappe, you're always thinking, "OK, how can they replicate the same levels in terms of quality?" But now they're better . They're better on the counterattack, better in midfield, and better defensively.

I just thought it was a great advert for the Champions League – two top level teams. And I think Liverpool were a bit shell-shocked in how good PSG were, to be honest. I was doing all the press stuff before the game, PSG were confident going into the first leg the second leg. But they've got a great coach. Luis Enrique is top, he really is a top coach. He Knows exactly how he wants to play. He demands control at times as well. But for them to go to Anfield and play like that, they are, you know, real contenders of winning this Champions League. I think that's been the game of the whole Champions League so far.

GOAL: Yeah, PSG came out and played their game, regardless of where it was.

RICHARDS: I just thought they have really good players. You know, [Bradley] Barcola is a terrific young talent. [Ousmane] Dembele is playing the best football of his career. They bring in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who we've seen at Napoli. He's a real special talent. Vitinha in midfield, Nuno Mendes at left back, [Achraf] Hakimi, we know what he can do. He's been doing it for years now. And then [Gianluigi] Donnarruma in the penalties stepped up. He's the real deal. Now, if they can keep this squad together, they can do special things. The draw might not help them this year, but if they can keep the same core group together next year, they're only going to get stronger.

Delhi Capitals are scheduled to play Punjab Kings on Wednesday•BCCI

At least two more fresh cases of Covid-19 have been detected in Delhi Capitals’ contingent, including an overseas player. ESPNcricinfo understands that the other positive case concerns a support staff member. This takes the total number of cases in this IPL to three after Captials’ physiotherapist Patrick Farhart had become the first person to test positive this season. The latest cases emerged two days before Capitals’ next match, which is scheduled in Pune against Punjab Kings. There is no information yet on whether the match would be affected, but Capitals cancelled their scheduled travel to Pune on Monday after the entire contingent was asked to go into in-room quarantine. It is understood that the entire Capitals contingent is undergoing fresh testing, based on which the next step is likely to be decided.Farhart had tested positive the day before Capitals played Royal Challengers Banglaore at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday. Consequently, the IPL asked both teams to maintain social distancing and not do the usual milling around, after the match, where players and coaches mingle. It is understood that the player returned a positive rapid antigen test and is now awaiting results of the RT-PCR test done on Monday. The support staff member tested positive the day after Farhart tested positive and has been isolating since. As per the IPL rules any person testing positive in the tournament bubble would need to isolate for a minimum of seven days. To re-enter the bubble, the person would need to return consecutive negative RT-PCR tests taken 24 hours apart. If a franchise had multiple positive cases, the rule says the team can take the field with a minimum of 12 players, including seven Indians and one substitute. In the scenario where 12 players are not available then the IPL would take the final call, which would be binding. Both the teams and the IPL are bound to be concerned by the development, considering the 2021 IPL had to be abandoned at the halfway stage after the number of  Covid-positive cases multiplied across several teams. At least five teams had returned positive cases last year, including Capitals after their then legspinner Amit Mishra returned two positive tests.
