Roma legend and one-club man Francesco Totti brought curtains down on his illustrious playing career at the end of the 2016-17 season, retiring just a few months before he would turn 41. THE BIGGER PICTURE

Back in October 2024, the former Italy international hinted at a comeback to professional football, stating that he was in contact with a few Serie A clubs that he chose not to name.

"Some Serie A teams have contacted me. I admit that they made me think a little, a little crazy. It would be difficult, but in life, you never say never," Totti told reporters at an event.

"There are players who have played many years after the end of their career. It also depends on where you play, with all due respect, but if I were to return to Serie A I would have to train really well."

However, the 48-year-old, in fact, did not come out of retirement, stating that it wouldn't have been an easy task for him at his age.

  • WHAT FRANCESCO TOTTI SAID

“There was a chance [of returning to playing football],” Totti told Viva El Futbol (h/t Football Italia).

“It [the team] was in Italy, in Serie A. I was really feeling great, I swear. I trained every day, two hours a day. I was in top shape, in terms of stamina and in every other aspect.

It didn’t go through because I would have had to change too many things—it would have been messy. I would have had to move to a different city. I was supposed to live near [Antonio] Cassano, can you imagine?”

Eoin Morgan ruled out of T20I series after sustaining quad injury

Eoin Morgan, England’s white-ball captain, has been ruled out of the remaining two matches of England’s T20I series against West Indies in Barbados, after sustaining a low-grade quadriceps injury.Morgan sat out England’s 20-run defeat in Wednesday’s third match, with Moeen Ali stepping in as his deputy, after feeling pain in his right quad during the pre-match warm-up.An ECB statement added: “Follow-up testing revealed he sustained a right thigh-muscle injury which, whilst relatively minor, will prevent him from playing further games during the current tour.”Morgan, 35, made scores of 17 from 29 balls and 13 from 12 in England’s first two fixtures – the former innings coming in the midst of a top-order collapse that included the loss of three wickets in the first two overs, and an eventual total of 103 all out.England bounced back to win the second match, although West Indies’ lower-order battled back from the brink to reduce the margin to a solitary run.Although England are currently ranked as the No. 1 T20I team in the world, Morgan had identified this campaign as an opportunity to expand their options ahead of the next T20 World Cup in Australia in November.”The whole tour is one where the development of our game is more important than a series win,” Morgan said ahead of the first T20I. “We’ve gone through this process before, and identifying the level of intensity, and our performance is far more important than the result.”The squad in the Caribbean had already been missing a core of proven performers, with Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood among those rested following their involvement in the Ashes, while Jofra Archer has been absent following his recent elbow operation – although he has been back training with his team-mates on this trip.In Morgan’s absence on Wednesday, England gave a debut to Harry Brook, with Phil Salt and George Garton also making their maiden T20I appearances in place of Sam Billings and Saqib Mahmood, who was hit for 28 runs in his final over of the second match.”A lot of talented guys will get opportunities throughout this series which is very exciting, not only for the team, but for them as well,” Morgan added. “They don’t get a lot of opportunity to go through a process like this so, for our long-term planning, as we strive to have deeper, stronger squads, it’s very important. The group that we would normally take to a World Cup has been together for quite some time, so the planning behind that is important to us.”Moeen will continue to lead the team in Morgan’s absence for the final two back-to-back fixtures on Saturday and Sunday. England, currently 2-1 down, must win both to claim the series.

Australia will start the defence of their Men’s T20 World Cup title against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand at the SCG in a rematch of last year’s final, while India and Pakistan will face each other at the MCG in their opening fixtures. Those were among the standout contests in the fixtures’ list for the 2022 T20 World Cup, which was announced on Friday. The tournament begins on October 16, with Sri Lanka facing Namibia in Geelong in the first round before the Super 12s start on October 22 in Sydney. While Australia vs New Zealand is the opening game of the round, the India-Pakistan fixture will take place on October 23.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

On three days, during the Super 12s, there will be three games taking place. These are all Group 2 games, which has Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and two teams coming through from the first round of matches. The days in question are October 27, when two matches will be played in Sydney and one in Perth, then October 30, when two matches are scheduled to be held in Perth and one in Brisbane, and finally November 6, when Adelaide will host two matches and Melbourne one.The two semi-finals will be held in Sydney (November 9) and Adelaide (November 10) before the final at the MCG on November 13.In Group one of the Super 12s, Australia are alongside New Zealand, England, Afghanistan plus the winner of the Group A qualifiers and the runner-up in Group B.Australia T20 captain Aaron Finch said knowing the groups so far out does help with planning, but it doesn’t make it any easier as Australia looks to defend their title on home soil.”Our planning was ultra-detailed last time,” Finch said at the MCG on Friday. “Knowing what the groups look like eight, nine months out is really helpful because it can help your level of detail in that planning phase. It’s a tough group though. They’re both tough, and when you throw in qualifiers like West Indies, Sri Lanka, you’ve got to play really well to get out of the group stage.”Two global qualifiers will determine the final teams that will head to Australia. Matches will be played in Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.Australia won the title for the first time last November when they beat New Zealand by eight wickets in Dubai. Mitchell Marsh was Player of the Match for his unbeaten 77 off 50 balls.

Friedkin plotting bargain Everton deal for "outstanding" in-demand defender

Looking to land the first signing of their Everton reign, The Friedkin Group are now reportedly plotting a move to welcome an in-demand defender ahead of Premier League rivals in 2025.

Everton transfer news

Whilst defeat against fellow relegation candidates Southampton brought them crashing back down to the reality of a relegation scrap, Everton have proved in recent weeks that they should have enough to avoid the drop, earning victories over Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town as well as a point apiece against Newcastle United and Fulham.

Currently sat outside of the relegation zone, those at Goodison Park will be desperate to continue that run upon the arrival of new owners with new investment in January.

When Dan Friedkin and Co do arrive, he could hand Everton an instant boost on the transfer front with links to the likes of Tariq Lamptey and even Jonathan David recently emerging.

Andy Robertson challenges Tariq Lamptey

David would be a particular statement, though unlikely given his desire to play European football. Lamptey, on the other hand, represents a realistic deal amid his struggles at Brighton & Hove Albion. But he’s not the only defender on the Tofees’ supposed list.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Friedkin are now plotting a move to sign Bright Osayi-Samuel upon the expiry of his current Fenerbahce deal at the end of the season. Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen to keep hold of the right-back but may be left with no choice but to bid farewell.

Everton will have to move quickly, however, with Aston Villa and Crystal Palace also set to chase the former Queens Park Rangers man in 2025. Given that Seamus Coleman is now 36 years old and coming to the end of an iconic Everton spell, the Toffees would be wise to welcome Osayi-Samuel back to English football.

"Outstanding" Osayi-Samuel can replace Coleman

Out with the old and in with the new, Osayi-Samuel would instantly replace Coleman in what would be the ultimate bargain as a free agent next summer. There’s a reason why Mourinho is reportedly so keen to tie the 26-year-old down to a new contract at the peak of his powers, but the Premier League is a call that the Nigerian may not be able to deny.

Last time he was in English football was at QPR in a run that saw former manager Mark Warburton full of praise. The ex-QPR boss told reporters as relayed by the Brent & Kilburn Times after victory over Cardiff City in 2020: “I’m delighted for him and it’s good for the crowd to see a player who gets them off their seats which is what you want.

“Bright came off because we’ve got to look after the young players. I’ve never been booed at 6-0 before I’ve got to say. These demands, you can’t be playing 21st, 26th, 29th, 1st, 4th or 5th whatever it might be without injury and fatigue.

“If you lose those boys for four to six week injuries, you can’t afford to do that. Today he was outstanding and deserved the applause.”

Chelsea identify "exceptional" £15m forward as Victor Osimhen alternative

Chelsea have identified a new transfer target amid a recent blow in their ongoing pursuit of Victor Osimhen.

The Blues came close to signing the Nigeria striker in the summer, but the deal couldn’t be pushed over the line before the close of the transfer window.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Chelsea had agreed a fee with Napoli for the 25-year-old in August, but he wasn’t willing to take a pay cut to move to Stamford Bridge, with the west London club having offered him a deal worth £3.3 million a year.

Osimhen instead joined Turkish side Galatasaray on a season-long loan, where he’s since scored eight goals in nine games.

Recent reports have suggested that Chelsea remain keen on the Super Eagles star, who won’t be staying in Turkey next summer and will be available for £63 million, but the Blues now face competition from Napoli’s Serie A rivals Juventus amid doubts over the future of Dusan Vlahovic.

Chelsea identify Osimhen alternative

With Juventus hot on Osimhen’s trail, Chelsea have now earmarked Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap as a possible transfer target for next summer.

That is according to The i, which reports that Delap’s performances in the Premier League this season have caught the eye of the Blues.

The 21-year-old, who joined newly promoted Ipswich from Manchester City for an initial £15m in June, is the Tractor Boys’ top scorer this term, having scored 6 goals in 12 games.

The i reports that Delap has rated “exceptionally highly” on Chelsea’s advanced transfer metrics, and that the club believe the young Englishman “would fit more readily into their wage structure” than Osimhen.

The publication notes, however, that City have a buy-back clause worth around £20 million for Delap, and that he’s also attracting interest from other “top sides”.

Murray hails "exceptional" Delap

Delap has received plenty of plaudits for his displays this season, including from former Premier League striker Glenn Murray.

During an appearance on Match of the Day 2 in September, Murray, who scored 37 top-flight goals across spells with Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Brighton, heaped praise on the Ipswich frontman.

“I think one of the things that’s thrown at newly promoted clubs is a lack of goals and that worry. He’s been exceptional.

“He’s always lively, always on the move. What I like about him is that he’s never really marked, he’s always moving and finding that yard of space.

“If he keeps putting in performances like that, he might just be the difference between Ipswich being a Premier League team at the end of the season and not.”

Delap's dream transfer: Ipswich could sign "explosive" £11m EFL star

The sensational talent would help make Ipswich’s star striker even more dangerous.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Nov 20, 2024

Prior to moving to Ipswich, Delap spent the last two seasons on loan in the Championship with Stoke City, Preston North End and Hull City, managing 12 goals in 70 appearances.

However, he’s taken his game to the next level since moving to Portman Road, impressing with his clinical finishing and powerful performances up top.

It’s easy to see why Chelsea would be interested, especially given that Christopher Nkunku could soon be leaving Stamford Bridge, although it’s unknown whether Delap would be able to compete with Nicolas Jackson as the Blues’ first-choice striker.

The Senegal forward has seven goals and three assists this term and has already surpassed Fernando Torres’ goalscoring record in the Premier League for the Blues, having found the net 21 times in 47 games.

Cost £15m: Moyes blundered on West Ham flop who’s now worth millions less

David Moyes may not have been everyone’s cup of tea at West Ham United, but no one can deny how much he transformed them during his spell, notably steering the club to European glory in 2023.

With Julen Lopetegui under some pressure, was moving Moyes on perhaps a tad hasty? Of course, feelings are mixed regarding the former manager, especially with some of his final few signings in charge.

David Moyes' wayward 2023 summer window

James Ward-Prowse cost the club £30m last summer from Southampton but failed to live up to this fee at the London Stadium and was loaned to Nottingham Forest ahead of the current campaign.

James Ward-Prowse scores from a corner for West Ham

Kalvin Phillips joined in January 2024 on a loan deal from Manchester City, with the Irons paying a loan fee and covering his wages during this temporary spell. The Englishman made just ten appearances for the club in what was a disastrous signing by Moyes.

One of his worst pieces of transfer business, especially in terms of value for money, was spending £15m to sign Danny Ings from Aston Villa.

Danny Ings’ West Ham statistics

Ings was fairly critical of his time at Villa Park, dubbing his maiden season in the Midlands as “underwhelming” after scoring just seven goals in 30 appearances for the club.

Although Moyes needed some more attacking reinforcements when he signed Ings nearly two years ago, the English striker was hardly going to be prolific under him.

Indeed, during his first six months, the former Liverpool centre-forward managed to score just two Premier League goals across 17 matches.

The 2023/24 campaign – his first full season at West Ham – was somehow even worse. Ings started only three times in the top flight, scoring a solitary goal against Burnley, a team who would be relegated.

It is clear that his time in London has been dismal. Ings was arguably one of Moyes’ worst-ever signings for the Irons, especially over his final 18 months in charge.

The Englishman’s market value has, unsurprisingly, dropped drastically since he moved to the club in January 2023.

Danny Ings market value at West Ham

Paying £15m for a striker who was clearly past their best was a terrible error of judgement by Moyes and the club are now paying for this move.

Indeed, according to Football Transfers, Ings is currently worth just €1.8m (£1.5m), which represents a major dip from the fee the club shelled out for him a little over 18 months ago.

His contract expires at the end of the season, but will West Ham be able to sell him in January? Especially considering how low his value is at this moment in time.

If not, he will likely be released next summer, with the club wasting money on paying his wages even though he is failing to contribute.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

The 33-year-old has scored just once this term from six appearances, starting only one of those games as Lopetegui prefers the likes of Michail Antonio to be unleashed in the starting XI.

There is no doubt Ings has been one of the worst signings the club has made recently, costing them a fortune in the process.

Vastrakar-Rana record stand, Gayakwad four-for crush Pakistan

Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana’s record rearguard 122-run stand, Smriti Mandhana’s 52, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s 4 for 31 led India to a 107-run victory against Pakistan in what was the opening World Cup game for both teams. Defending 244, India bowled Pakistan out for 137 in 43 overs, thanks to 18-year-old Richa Ghosh, who became the first World Cup debutant to effect five wicketkeeping dismissals.Pakistan’s defeat on Sunday meant teams batting first have won all four matches of the World Cup so far and India continued to have an all-win record of 11-0 against Pakistan in ODIs.India overcame the scare of a sub-200 score courtesy a counter-attacking 97-ball partnership, the highest-ever seventh-wicket stand at an ODI World Cup, between half-centurions Vastrakar and Rana after Pakistan reduced them to 114 for 6 in the 34th over. At that juncture in Mount Maunganui, opener Mandhana’s knock appeared seemingly inconsequential in the first ODI fixture between the two teams since the 2017 World Cup.Riding India’s highest-ever seventh-wicket ODI stand, Rana and Vastrakar helped add a brisk 130 to India’s tally in the last 16.5 overs, marshalling them past 200 in the 46th. Vastrakar brought up her second ODI fifty in the following over, off just 48 balls, and soon registered her career-best international score. She finished on 67 off 59 while Rana posted her ODI career-best with an unbeaten 53 off 48.Before the pair came on to bat, though, the prospect of Pakistan being set a total substantially above their highest successful ODI chase was not on the horizon. Nor of them suffering their 15th straight defeat in ODI World Cups. And it looked highly likely that India’s decision to bat after leaving out the in-form frontline batter Yastika Bhatia at the expense of the run-parched opener Shafali Verma, who scored a duck on Sunday, could cost them dearly. But quick runs from the two bowling allrounders wrested the momentum from Pakistan to India towards the closing leg of the innings.Spin played a decisive role in the innings from the get-go after left-arm spinner Anam Amin was introduced as early as the second over. Diana Baig struck in her second over after a slew of five testing dots and a wide culminated in Shafali losing her leg stump.Baig discomfited Mandhana with searing inswing up front. The pressure of dot balls mounting, Mandhana, on 12, skied Amin towards the vacant mid-off region in the eighth over but survived as Maroof, who scurried in from the extra-cover position, failed to get under the ball.Rajeshwari Gayakwad got the first breakthrough and finished with 4 for 31•AFP/Getty Images

Mandhana released some pressure with a lofted drive over long-off for six in Dar’s first over to finish India’s powerplay on 33 for 1, which included 43 dots. This was their lowest returns in the first 10 overs in 11 ODIs. They reached 50 in the 13th over, in which Fatima Sana had to deliver nine balls. Mandhana, who was on 29 off 45 at the time, improved her fluency as the innings progressed. She became the fourth Indian woman to score 2500 ODI runs when she milked a two off Sandhu to reach 40.Another milestone came, her 25th score of 50 or more in ODIs, on the 71st ball of her innings. The very next delivery, though, she lost her partner, Deepti Sharma, Sandhu bowling her for 40 to break the 92-run second-wicket stand. It triggered a collapse as Mandhana chipped a return catch to Amin for a 75-ball 52. Amin, who conceded only six runs and 18 dots in her 23 boundary-less balls to Mandhana, had the last laugh.Dar was the next to strike, trapping No. 5 Harmanpreet Kaur lbw and crashing into wicketkeeper Ghosh’s stumps. Mithali Raj, too, succumbed to Pakistan’s spin offensive as Baig gobbled up her mistimed slog off Sandhu at point. India, as a result, slumped from 96 for 1 to 114 for 6 in the space of 11.2 overs. All five Pakistan bowlers picked up at least one wicket each. Sandhu, with 2 for 36 off her full allotment, was the most successful among them.India’s bowlers, complemented by Ghosh’s spectacular glovework, applied the choke from the outset, with the injured Vastrakar not taking the field for the chase. First-change Gayakwad got the first breakthrough with the wicket of the experienced Javeria Khan, after the opener crawled to 11 off 28, and Pakistan to just 26 in the powerplay, with 47 dot balls. In that phase, it was the pace tandem of Jhulan Goswami and Meghna Singh that kept the opposition on a leash.Pakistan burned both their DRS calls while crumbling. First, when captain Bismah Maroof, playing her first international fixture since returning from maternity leave, under-edged a sweep off Deepti to the agile and alert Ghosh. Later, No. 7 Fatima Sana opted for the review in vain after Gayakwad struck her plumb on the pad. Gayakwad’s returns of 4 for 31 were the best on the day.The other India spinners, Rana, who took her maiden World Cup wicket on her second ball, finished with 2 for 27 and Deepti claimed 1 for 31. Goswami picked up 2 for 26, including a maiden, and Meghna sealed the win with Baig’s wicket.

Everton pushing to sign "very intelligent" 24 y/o who Jose Mourinho loves

Everton are believed to be interested in signing a “very intelligent” player who is admired by Jose Mourinho, according to a new transfer update.

Latest Everton news

There continue to be incoming and outgoing transfer rumours regarding the Blues, with Michael Keane linked with a move away from Goodison Park in recent days. The veteran defender is said to be wanted by Serie A clubs, with his current deal expiring at the end of this season.

Another player who could be on the move from Everton soon is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who remains an injury-prone player not enjoying his best season currently. Like Keane, his contract expires in the summer of 2025, which is why the Merseysiders could entertain offers for him once the January transfer window opens, instead of losing him on a free transfer.

The future of Sean Dyche as the Blues’ manager also continues to be a big talking point at Goodison, and individuals are being mentioned as potential replacements, should he be relieved of his duties soon. One such figure is Sergio Conceicao, who was most recently in charge of Porto, leaving earlier this year.

Edin Terzic has also emerged as a possible option for Everton, having guided Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final last season, where they were beaten by Real Madrid. He is still without a club after departing the Bundesliga giants in the summer.

Everton eyeing move for "very intelligent" ace

According to Sabah [via Sport Witness], Everton have sent scouts to watch Fenerbahce winger Oguz Aydin in action, seeing him as a potential signing in the New Year. The 24-year-old has also been linked with Arsenal, among others, with Lille and Lazio among those to have representatives to view him for his current club.

Aydin is an exciting attacking player with the ability to make a real difference at Everton, providing healthy competition for the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil.

The one-cap Turkey international has scored three goals in as many Turkish Super Lig starts this season, while his manager, Mourinho, has heaped praise on him, saying: “He is a good player physically and tactically and very intelligent.

“With all due respect to (Vincenzo) Montella (Turkey manager), he should be happy. I suppose the team that did not sign him will be unhappy. We brought him in at the last minute. I asked him to give me time. He was not ready, but, after 4-5 months, he has reached an optimal level. I am very happy for him.”

Aydin is a left winger by trade, but his versatility allows him to do a job on the right flank, too, meaning he could be an option to replace either current starters Ndiaye and McNeil.

"Calm" £80k-p/w Everton ace at centre of Serie A interest ahead of 2025

At 24, he is still a maturing player in the final third, too, and he would be brought in to spend the peak years of his career at Everton, adding an extra spark to their struggling attack.
