'Greatest Liverpool FC attacker of Premier League era' – Apple TV commentator Keith Costigan on Mo Salah and Liverpool, the Olivier Giroud experiment at LAFC and more

The former soccer player turned commentator joined Mic'd Up to discuss the upcoming 2025 MLS season, the success of Liverpool under Arne Slot and more

Keith Costigan is an interesting figure in the North American soccer scene. Born in Ireland, he came to the U.S. on a college scholarship and fell in love with the domestic game. He played professionally with the Portland Timbers in USL, and with the Harrisburg City Islanders, too.

In a world full of overlaps, Costigan worked under assistant coach Mark Pulisic – father of USMNT star Christian – while with the Islanders.

He held training stints with the LA Galaxy as well, but his impact on the domestic game was never on the pitch, rather, it was off it — watching it with a keen eye through a unique perspective.

Costigan is now one of the lead commentators on Apple TV covering MLS, but worked as the voice of the Seattle Sounders for seven years, where he earned two Emmys. Prior, he worked for FOX Sports as the lead play-by-play announcer on the German Bundesliga, while covering the UEFA Champions League, Liga MX, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and the European Championships.

It was all unintentional, though, he never had plans to become a voice of the domestic game; it was a "snowball" effect that saw him roll into the position.

"One day, somebody just came up to me and asked me about one of my teammates, Brent Sancho, playing in a World Cup qualifier when I put him in contact with him, and Nick Webster was the guy. And it snowballed into him asking me if I wanted to call the game with him. And I said no, it never, it never crossed my mind. Like, stupid, like I just turned down a great offer. But then he asked again," Costigan told GOAL. "He was like, come on, you should do it. And then I was like, alright, I'll do it…You know, playing the game is great, but obviously, at that level, you're doing it for the love, not for the money. And then? I just started working in broadcasting with FOX, and kind of went from there."

With FOX, Costigan worked on different shows and broadcasts, becoming a familiar face for many fans across North American soccer. Now, though, he is known as one of the most knowledgeable voices around the continent in domestic soccer.

Costigan weighed in on the upcoming MLS season for the Sounders, LAFC, reigning champions LA Galaxy, and Liverpool FC in the latest edition of Mic’d Up, a recurring feature in which GOAL US taps into the perspective of broadcasters, analysts, and other pundits on the state of soccer in the U.S. and abroad.

GOAL: The Seattle Sounders recently acquired U.S. internationals Jesus Ferreira and Paul Arriola from FC Dallas. Will they be enough to lift their attack in 2025, ahead of competing in the FIFA Club World Cup, CONCACAF Champions Cup and the domestic campaign?

COSTIGAN: Yeah, I like them. I talked to [Brian] Schmetzer a couple of weeks ago in Miami, and I was like, great moves. And Schmetzer’s always like, ‘you know, let's see….You know, we're happy with what we're doing,’ but he’s also kind of keeping his cards close to his chest…Jesus Ferreira is a known quantity in the league. He's a top striker for me. So that's a no-brainer… if you have the opportunity to add him, you do it.

And Paul Arriola is someone that I think kind of lost his way a little bit at Dallas. But he can be a direct attacking threat. Can play a couple of different roles. And I think for me, I don't think the Sounders could have done any better business that you can look at and say they are going to be better. You could maybe sign a foreign player, and in the end, he ends up being outstanding. But that doesn't always work out. So I like the moves.

I think going into Club World Cup for Ferreira in particular, he's looking at that maybe as a shop window as well because I think he still has desires to maybe go to Europe and to have a motivated player like that playing for the Sounders, it's a good situation. So I think Smith, [Seattle’s GM] Craig Waibel has done a really good job this offseason.

GOAL: The Sounders Club World Cup group has been dubbed the with the likes of Botafogo, Atletico Madrid and Juventus all competing against them. Have they bolstered their roster enough this offseason for such a competition?

COSTIGAN: It's funny, I'm working on a paper, I'm doing a sports MBA right now, and the paper is on the finances of football. And one of the things in the finances of football is the more you spend, the more likely you are to be successful. Now, obviously you look at the Manchester United’s of this world, and it doesn't always work out. You could talk about spending more, but you look at the clubs they're going to be playing against, they have much bigger budgets. They have deeper squads. The one saving grace for the Sounders is you're at home, you're on your territory. So that gives you an opportunity, but I think it's going to be really, really difficult.

I don't necessarily know if you go out and spend 25 million on one player makes you better. You want the collective to work as a group. Sometimes you do that and one player is on so much more money than everybody else, it fractures the squad, etc. So, you know, I think Seattle would be competitive, and if they get out of the group, it will be a shock. Like, I'm not saying I will be shocked, I want them to get out, but if you get out of that group, when you consider the money the other teams have spent, in world football terms, it’s a shock.

So I'm rooting for them, but you just look at the money of the other teams, the players that they find, you're like, oh, man, this is going to be tough, but it's why we watch the game. It's why we watch the game. And I'm excited to, you know, hopefully, be there for those games as well. And once that whistle blows, anything is possible, particularly when you play in front of your own fans. So it'll be fun.

GOAL: Seattle's one X-factor heading into 2025 is a healthy Pedro De La Vega, who returned from injury later in the season in 2024, but only managed to appear in 16 league matches. What are the expectations for him in particular, considering the club spent $7.5M for him, and is banking on his prospects?

COSTIGAN: That's a good question. It's just that they played a game in Marbella [Spain], a preseason friendly. They won 2-0. De la Vega scored and assisted. When I saw that… I'm like, OK, yep, at the end of last season, I saw glimpses. Oh, and there you go. There was a moment against LAFC in the playoffs where he made that run and set up a chance. And I went: I see it.

Now, we didn't see it enough last year, but he was a young player who came in injured, and when you're playing catch-up like that, it's very, very difficult to find your feet. I expect them to be better. I expect them to be more creative. I expect them to get more goals. And he needs this preseason, so when I saw that performance in Marbella, it made me really happy. but it's also a case of staying fit, being available, getting to know your teammates, and getting to know what your role is…But I don't think there's any doubt, if he stays fit, we're going to see a better Pedro de la Vega…I hope he's right up there with the very best, but, you know, at the very least, I expect him to be a double-figure assist guy this year and chip in with some goals as w ell.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesON BRANDON VAZQUEZ

GOAL: Another American on the move this offseason in addition to Ferreira was striker Brandon Vazquez, who left Liga MX side Monterrey to return to MLS, signing with Austin FC. Was this a good move for both him and , or does it seem like an odd fit from afar?

COSTIGAN: I don't know. Brandon had some goals down there, but when Monterrey signed him, German Berterame was like the centerpiece of their attack, and it was like the way they play didn't really lend itself to two strikers. So I think again, just like Jesus [Ferreira], Brandon is a known quantity in the league, like he scores goals, you know what you're going to get from him…

I think he brings quality there. I think he brings a presence he can get on the end of the crosses. But I've watched Austin over the last few years, and the No. 9 role wasn't the issue. I know Gyasi Zardes, and I'm a little bit biased, because I have a friendship with Gyasi as well, but other forwards went in and played. Nobody really scored goals in Austin because they didn't generate that many chances. They were quite defensive. Driussi’s drop-off last year was vast, and he's not going to be there this year. So it signals to me they're going to go a different way. They're going to go a different route. They have a new coach coming in Nico Estevez and he didn't have the greatest of times at his previous club FC Dallas.

It's an interesting watch, but it's one of those clubs where I think the jury's really out, like, in terms of where they're going to be at…When someone brings up Austin, they go, yeah, they're making moves. But I still have no idea what to expect. Like, if they were down near the bottom of the West again, I would not be surprised.

GOAL: Mauricio Pochettino came out and adamantly said, no matter where you play, as long as you're playing, I will look at you. Do you think a move back to MLS instead of going abroad perhaps hurts Vasquez's chances in the national team picture, or is he still right in there with this group?

COSTIGAN: I've worked as a scout for U.S. Soccer and one of the most difficult things you have to do, when you're looking at a player, is take away the context of the level that they're playing at. It's not easy to watch someone and say it will translate, but I think that the very best can pick that out. They can say, this fits what I want to do. His ability fits what I want to do and my goal for the team. So I like hearing that [from Pochettino]…

I think there are just a few soldiers left that are online that I don't even think have been to Europe in their life and they go “Europe is amazing. You gotta, go, you can’t stay in MLS” – Look at some of the setups in Europe. It isn't that great! The idea that you're going to be a big part of the team, that you're going to have the opportunity to flourish and play is big, but…

For example, I don't know if Zack Steffen became a better goalkeeper at Man City. I don't know anybody that can tell me that. I remember people telling me Zack Steffen is going to hear from Pep [Guardiola] in practice that he's going to do this and that I'm like… Pep isn’t coming over telling Zack to like, change anything in practice. But I think you know, if a player is in an environment that fosters growth, it allows him to continue to evolve as a player, you have an opportunity to be involved. So Brandon should have no qualms about that. He has to deliver. But I like what Poch said. And I think any rational-minded football person would say the same thing as well.

GettyON CADE COWELL

GOAL: Another player, like Vazquez, who had left MLS for Liga MX was winger Cade Cowell. Since he signed for Chivas, he hasn't quite found consistency for the club, but still shows glimpses of the pace, size and scoring ability we saw in San Jose. What next for him? Where does he fit in the picture in Liga MX, but also internationally with the USMNT?

COSTIGAN: Cade is an interesting one. I cover Liga MX a little bit, and the keyboard warriors came after me when he played for the U.S. in one game, and I said, I didn't know when Cade was here, what he actually did to earn a U.S. Men's National Team call up initially. I was like, we're picking a player based on potential, when it's the national team, I think you have to have a bit of a track record, because it's the culmination of everything. Since, I've seen him develop, like last time he played, last time he played for the national team, I said, this is a player that's evolving. I saw him last year with Chivas and I said he's getting better. So he's taking steps…Does that future hold in Liga MX, going to Europe, [or] coming back to MLS? He has to continue to play…He's very Pacey, but sometimes he's one direction for me like he can change direction when the defender forces in one way, but I've seen real improvements in that. So I look at Cade, and I'm like, I wasn't being critical. I was saying, you need to do more. He's starting to do more. I'm excited about where he's going to go, but that must continue – his growth. So I like where he's at now, the most important thing is just to play and continue to become a better player, which he has been doing.

IMAGNON THE LA GALAXY

GOAL: The LA Galaxy's 2024 campaign was brilliant, but how does Greg Vanney keep this squad together ahead of a potential MLS Cup repeat?

COSTIGAN: It's tough. Like, I don't think, you know all the greats will tell you the best time to evolve is when you're when you're at your very best. If you wait, you play catch up. So I think we've seen them start to make moves…

[Then you have the front tree]in [Gabriel] Pec, wow –what a season. You have a game changer in Dejan Joveljic, you have a No. 9 who will get 15 to 20 goals and in [Joseph] Paintsil, you'll have the same, so you add up the numbers of that front three again, they'll be there or thereabouts, which is what they were this year in the West. Right? They were right up there with number one. I know they lost on the final day of the regular season. I could see LA Galaxy being a third or fourth seed going into playoffs but with Ricky Puig finally back and ready in the mix. They're a man for everyone.

By the way, Riqui Puig, for me… I know Messi is the greatest. I know I love watching him, but watching Riqui Puig is different, teams hate him and the opposition hates him. He loves contact. He loves winding people up. He's box office for me in MLS. So when he comes back in, if they're there or thereabouts, they're going to be a threat again. And by the way, it's the Galaxy – they make moves. This isn't a club that stands still so…I think it'll be a different Galaxy. But I still think they're a real contender to win it all based on that front three again.

Saurashtra Ranji Trophy winner Avi Barot dies aged 29

The batter died on Friday following a cardiac arrest

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Oct-2021Avi Barot, the Saurashtra batter, occasional wicketkeeper and part-time offbreak bowler, died on October 15 at the age of 29 following a cardiac arrest.”Avi was an exceptional and remarkable cricketer,” the Saurashtra Cricket Association said in a statement on its website; Barot had started his domestic career in Gujarat before moving to Saurashtra, and had turned out for Haryana in between too.Related

Synchronised clapping – the 'punch' that keeps Saurashtra going

Barot played 38 first-class matches, the same number of List A games, and 20 T20s – 21, 17 and 11 of them respectively for Saurashtra. He aggregated 1547 runs at an average of 48.49 in first-class cricket, 1030 runs at 28.61 in List A cricket and 717 runs at 37.73 in T20s.”This is absolutely shocking and painful to learn about Avi’s sad demise,” Jaydev Shah, the former Saurashtra captain who is now president of the association, said in a statement. “He was (a) great team-mate and had great cricketing skill. In all recent domestic matches, he had performed remarkably well. He was very friendly and (a) noble human being. We all at Saurashtra Cricket Association are in deep shock.”

Barot was an integral part of the Saurashtra team that reached the final of the Ranji Trophy in 2015-16, where they lost to Mumbai, and again in 2018-19, when they lost to Vidarbha. He scored 309 runs in nine innings at an average of 34.33, with three half-centuries, when Saurashtra won the Ranji Trophy for the first time in 2019-20, the last time the tournament was played before being suspended – for the first time since its inception in 1934-35 – because of the Covid-19 pandemic.Barot was also the BCCI’s Under-19 cricketer of the year in 2011, after he hit four centuries and three half-centuries in the 2010-11 Cooch Behar Trophy for Gujarat, leading them to the title. In the 2020-21 season, Barot played both the 50-over Vijay Hazare 50-over tournament and the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Saurashtra, and made headlines with a 53-ball 122 against Goa.

Michael Neser hopeful of Ashes availability despite hamstring injury

Queensland are hopeful Test aspirant Michael Neser will still be available for the first Ashes Test after suffering a minor hamstring strain on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia at the Gabba.Neser suffered the strain during his ninth over on the first afternoon after taking the early wicket of Cameron Bancroft. He had a scan on Thursday morning that revealed a low-grade strain in his right leg. Queensland physio and former Australia Test batter Martin Love said he was optimistic Neser would be available for selection in the opening Ashes Test despite it being less than four weeks away.”He will be assessed in the coming days to arrive at a suitable return to play date,” Love said. “At this stage, we are hopeful that, if required, he would be available for selection for the opening Test.”Neser has yet to play a Test match for Australia but has been a regular member of Australia’s Test squads since 2018 and has come close to selection on a number of occasions. The retirement of James Pattinson has pushed him closer to the top of the queue of fast bowlers waiting in the wings behind Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.Neser is a certainty to be named in Australia’s extended squad, due to be announced soon, but his participation in the three-day intrasquad match to be played in Brisbane starting on December 1 is now in doubt. He has had an interrupted start to the season, having missed two of Queensland’s Shield matches due to the birth of his child.Meanwhile, WA veteran Shaun Marsh is set for an extended period on the sidelines after suffering a bad calf injury while batting on the second day. Marsh was forced to retire hurt and did not return to bat or field on day two with his availability for WA’s next Shield game against Tasmania and his participation in the early part of the BBL season for Melbourne Renegades in severe doubt.WA bowler Joel Paris also suffered a minor hamstring injury on day one at the Gabba. He was able to bat on day two but won’t bowl in Queensland’s second innings.

No entanto, o sonho ainda segue no papel.

Neymar lucrou US$ 95 milhões (US$ 76 milhões no campo e outros US$ 19 milhões em publicidade).

Estamos torcendo. Tive contato contigo ontem. A gente quer o teu melhor, porque o teu melhor, Neymar, é o melhor nosso também – declarou.

Mauro Icardi responds to Jose Mourinho's sarcastic swipe at Galatasaray striker with hilarious 'GOAT' images after labelling Fenerbahce boss 'The Crying One'

Galatasaray star Mauro Icardi has continued his feud with Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho with a series of 'GOAT' images for 'The Crying One'.

Mourinho fires jibe at GalatasarayIcardi hits back at Fenerbahce bossPosts 'GOAT' images for 'The Crying One'Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Mourinho initiated the war of words by taking a jibe at Galatasaray with a social media post, complaining about handball decisions going their way. Icardi responded by posting a photoshopped image of a book cover titled 'The Crying One'; prompting the Portuguese – who once annointed himself as 'The Special One' – to brand the Argentine the GOAT (greatest of all time). Now, the striker has hit back in style.

In an Instagram story, Icardi put together a picture of a goat clad in Galatasaray kit, with trophies and flags on either side of it. And in another he put, "The Turkish G.O.A.T," with half of his face and half of a goat's face.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is building up nicely to both team's top-of-the-table clash on February 24 on Galatasaray's home patch. Three points separate the teams, but Mourinho's second-placed side have played a game more. This match could define the entire season.

Man Utd chiefs make early approach over bargain deal for speed "machine"

Manchester United and INEOS have made contact with a £325,000 a week “machine” over a summer move, according to a new report. The next two transfer windows are going to be very important for the Red Devils, as INEOS work to get players into the club who fit the style that new manager Ruben Amorim wants to play at Old Trafford.

Man Utd now want to win race for £10m-a-year target by offering huge deal

INEOS are now willing to throw everything at a deal in summer 2025.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 7, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

There are always plenty of rumours involving United, but since the arrival of Amorim, talk of transfers has intensified. The Portuguese looks keen to reunite with some of his Sporting players at his new club, but he will have to wait until the summer to do that.

It was also revealed this week that United are plotting a fresh move for Jarrad Branthwaite next summer. The Red Devils were very interested in the summer and saw bids of up to £50 million rejected, but that interest hasn’t gone away, as they now believe he could fit perfectly into Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

As well as Branthwaite, United are also looking to win the race for Alphonso Davies. The left-back is in the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich, and it looks unlikely at this stage that he will sign a new contract. United are ready to offer him a “huge deal” to beat Real Madrid to the signing. Trying to sign Bayern Munich players doesn’t stop there for the Red Devils, as they also have their eye on another soon-to-be free agent.

INEOS already in contact about signing Leroy Sane for Man Utd

According to Christian Falk, Manchester United are interested in signing Leroy Sane and have already made an enquiry for his services. The 28-year-old has been at the German giants since 2020, when he joined from Manchester City, and he has been a regular contributor for them in recent years.

Sane, who earns 384,615 euros a week at Munich, which is roughly £325,000, scored eight goals and recorded 11 assists in 27 Bundesliga games last season, but they missed out on the title to Bayer Leverkusen.

The winger is now in the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich, and United are interested in signing him when his deal expires, so much so that they have already made contact. Sane, who was described as a “machine” by Thomas Tuchel, is not short of options though, as fellow Premier League team Arsenal are also interested in signing the speedy attacker.

The Germany international is going to wait for negotiations with Munich before making a decision on his future. Either way, United are keen on landing the winger, and he could be seen as a replacement for Antony, who looks to be no longer needed at Old Trafford.

Sold for £18m: Spurs struck gold selling Poch signing who’s now worth £500k

In recent months, Tottenham Hotspur’s activity in the transfer market has handed boss Ange Postecoglou the best possible chance of cementing the club’s place as a top-four Premier League side this season.

Since his appointment last summer, numerous key first-team members have been added, helping Spurs in their battle to secure consistent Champions League football in North London.

James Maddison joined the side in a £40m deal from Leicester City after their relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 season – with the midfielder enjoying a successful first 12 months under Postecoglou.

The Englishman has registered a total of 18 combined goals and assists since his big-money transfer, providing a huge attacking threat from a deeper position on the field.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has also impressed after arriving last summer, nailing down the number one spot, making 49 appearances and keeping 11 clean sheets in the process.

However, despite the recent impressive signings from the club’s recruitment team, they have also enjoyed success in the transfer market during previous years, signing players who managed to have a huge impact on the first team.

Tottenham’s summer transfer window in 2015

After finishing fifth in the 2014/15 season, Spurs had the task of recruiting well during the off-season to push and secure a Champions League spot in the following season.

Owner Daniel Levy spent big that summer, forking out £22m for the signature of winger Heung-min Son from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen – a bargain given his impact in North London since his transfer.

The South Korean star has since registered 164 goals in his 415 appearances for the Lilywhites, often being the player to create carnage in the final third after Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich last summer.

Toby Alderweireld also arrived during the same transfer window, joining for only £11.5m from Atlético Madrid – in a move to help bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s backline.

The deal was undoubtedly a successful one, with the Belgian forming an excellent partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen and making 236 appearances during his six years in the capital.

However, another defensive reinforcement was added in the form of Austrian Kevin Wimmer, joining for just £4m from German side FC Koln on a five-year contract.

Undoubtedly, he was seen as one for the future but was unable to dislodge any of the aforementioned duo – restricting him to just 31 appearances at White Hart Lane.

He only lasted two years at the club, before he was sold to fellow Premier League side Stoke City in the summer of 2017 – a deal that proved to be an excellent one from a Spurs viewpoint.

Kevin Wimmer’s market value in 2024

His move to join the Potters saw Spurs bank £18m, subsequently making a £14m profit despite his lack of appearances – with his form at Stoke failing to demonstrate such a high transfer figure.

Kevin Wimmer

The now 31-year-old only managed 19 appearances under boss Mark Hughes, before three separate loan spells away from the Bet365 Stadium before eventually leaving the club in 2021 with the Potters now a Championship outfit.

Seven years on from his transfer away from North London, his market value has continued to plummet, with the Austrian now plying his trade for Slovak Bratislava in Slovakia.

He featured against Manchester City in the Champions League this season, but it hasn’t stopped his decline in value, with Wimmer now only valued at £500k as per Transfermarkt.

It’s positive to see a former player finally looking settled after a torrid few years after a failed transfer, but from a financial perspective, the hierarchy certainly made the right call in selling the defender.

His lack of impact at Spurs made it a no-brainer to cash in on the Austrian defender, making a hefty profit on a fringe player – allowing for further investment in key first-team players down the line.

West Indies look to open their Test account in Sri Lanka

Several senior players including Angelo Mathews will return into the Sri Lankan fold in coach Mickey Arthur’s final Test series

Andrew Fidel Fernando20-Nov-2021Big pictureChris Gayle made a triple-hundred in Galle, Brian Lara hit 351 runs in one match in Colombo, and 688 in that three-match series, but this has to be one of cricket’s more surprising facts: West Indies have never won a Test in Sri Lanka. Partly this is down to their not having played on the island in their roaring 1980s – Sri Lanka too weak to attract them then perhaps, and too volatile geopolitically to have had a consistent touring schedule anyway. But still, since 1993, these teams have met eleven times in Sri Lanka; they have drawn just four of those games – three on a severely rain-affected tour in late 2010.Related

Sri Lanka pick Asalanka, Bhanuka for West Indies Tests

Mickey Arthur to move to Derbyshire after end of Sri Lanka stint

On paper, this doesn’t seem like the West Indies team to improve that record, but it is clear this is an improving team. Their batting, for one, looks better than it did in 2016, when they last toured Sri Lanka. On their most-recent trip to South Asia, West Indies had pulled off a chase for the ages, debutant Kyle Mayers hitting 210 not out as West Indies hunted down 385 in Chattogram. They won the second Test, in Dhaka, too. In the next series, against Sri Lanka, in the Caribbean, they established substantial first-innings leads in both matches, even if they would eventually peter out to draws.Sri Lanka aren’t quite ripe for the plucking; Tests are still probably their safest format. But there is a little instability around this outfit that could hypothetically make them vulnerable. This series sees the return of several senior players – including Angelo Mathews – who had felt slighted during the months-long contracts standoff the players were involved in, with the board. This is also Mickey Arthur’s final Test series as coach, and the likes of batting coach Grant Flower, and bowling coach Chaminda Vaas, aren’t guaranteed their positions into next year either. As both matches are due to be played in Galle, spin is likeliest to decide the series. How will these flawed teams use it? How will they play it? On that front, Sri Lanka would seem to have a significant edge, particularly after West Indies’ tour match in Colombo was rained out.Big picture (completed matches, most recent first)West Indies LWLLD
Sri Lanka WDDDLIn the spotlightKyle Mayers may have created more buzz this year, but West Indies’ most consistent batter, by a slim margin, has been their captain, Kraigg Brathwaite. In 2021, he has hit 556 runs at 34.75, and given most of his 16 innings have come against the brand new Dukes ball, these are laudable numbers. But does he struggle against spin bowling, on turning tracks? He had one outstanding tour of the UAE in 2016, but even with his 328 from that series, his numbers in Asia (average of 28.87), lags behind his career stats. If he can spend substantial time at the crease (in his trademark shades-and-helmet), West Indies will likely make a bigger impact than they did in 2016, when they lost 2-0.66, 118, 244, 75 – so read Dimuth Karunaratne’s last four Test knocks. The problem is, the most recent of these came way back in May, so it’s not as if you can say he comes into the series in form. Rarely does a home Test series pass by without a serious contribution from him, however, and he is especially good at Galle, where he has produced exceptional innings on tough pitches. West Indies’ bowlers will be desperate to neutralise him early.Dimuth Karunaratne has been Sri Lanka’s most consistent batter in recent Tests•AFP/Getty ImagesPitch and conditionsThe surface is likely to be spin-friendly, but with the amount of rain that’s been around in all parts of the country, the pitch is unlikely to start out very dry. Given the northeast monsoon is still in operation, expect frequent rain interruptions, particularly in the afternoons.Team newsSri Lanka had thought about giving Charith Asalanka a debut, but it appears that they will go in with a bowling-heavy side instead, fielding two legspinners – Lasith Embuldeniya and Praveen Jayawickrama, in addition to offspin-bowling allrounder Ramesh Mendis (Dhananjaya de Silva is also there to contribute with his offbreaks).Dinesh Chandimal is likely to keep wickets, with Niroshan Dickwella suspended for a year over breaking Covid protocols in England.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt.), 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Oshada Fernando, 4 Angelo Mathews, 5 Dhananjaya de Silva, 6 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 7 Ramesh Mendis, 8 Suranga Lakmal, 9 Lasith Embuldeniya, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Praveen Jayawickrama.Jeremy Solozano, the Trinidad opening batter, could also be in line for a debut, as Brathwaite’s opening partner. With Roston Chase capable of delivering half-decent offspin, West Indies will also have to decide which of their other spin options – offspinner Rahkeem Cornwall, or left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican – plays. They could field them both, but that would mean their only serious seam options are Kemar Roach and Jason Holder.West Indies (possible): 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt.), 2 Jeremy Solozano, 3 Nkrumah Bonner, 4 Roston Chase, 5 Jermaine Blackwood, 6 Kyle Mayers, 7 Rahkeem Cornwall, 8 Jason Holder, 9 Joshua da Silva (wk), 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Jomel Warrican/Jayden SealesStats and rivia This is West Indies’ second World Test Championship series in the new cycle. They had won one Test and lost one against Pakistan in August, giving them 12 points. For Sri Lanka, this is their first series in the new cycle. Kraigg Brathwaite averages 25.75 in four innings in Sri Lanka – his third worst average in host countries, after India (where he averages 19.91), and Bangladesh (21.16). Dimuth Karunaratne averages 51.36 in Galle, and averages 47.52 as captain. His career average is 38.62. Across conditions, West Indies have won just one of the seven most-recent Tests between these sides. Sri Lanka have won three of them.

Aston Villa leading race to sign "magnificent" gem who plays like Grealish

Aston Villa are leading the race to sign a “magnificent” talent who scouts believe plays like Jack Grealish, according to a new report. The Villans have had a few poor results in the last week, but Unai Emery will be keen to finish strong as they head into the November international break.

Why there's talks of Douglas Luiz returning to Aston Villa on loan

Villa may be offered the chance to re-sign a former player in January after his poor start at his new club.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 5, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news

It has overall been an excellent campaign for Villa, as they sit near the top end of the Premier League table as well as the Champions League group stage. However, despite the success on the pitch, it appears as though the hierarchy, along with Emery, are keen on adding to their squad when January arrives.

La Liga is a league that Monchi and Emery know well, and it seems that the pair have been keeping a close eye on it. That is because Villa are interested in signing Getafe’s Christantus Uche, a midfielder who has been really impressive this season, and they are also interested in signing Loic Bade from Sevilla, a young French defender showing plenty of promise.

Douglas Luiz for Aston Villa

Meanwhile, they could also be offered the chance to re-sign a former player of theirs. It came to light on Tuesday that Juventus could offer Villa the chance to sign Douglas Luiz on loan in January, as the Brazilian continues to struggle at his new club. Juventus are keen for Luiz to re-find his confidence, and they believe sending him back to Villa could do that, but it remains to be seen if his former employers are interested in a deal.

Villa will have to weigh that possibility up, but there is one player that they are definitely interested in and are said to be leading the race for his signature.

Aston Villa leading race to sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton

According to Football Transfers, Aston Villa are keeping a close eye on the progress of Tyler Dibling and are leading the race to secure his signature. Dibling is a product of Southampton’s academy, and he has really impressed in the top flight this season.

The 18-year-old, who has been described as “magnificent” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has appeared in all 10 league games this season, and he has one goal to his name, which came against Ipswich Town.

There are several Premier League teams looking at Dibling, but Emery’s side are leading the race to sign the young talent. Villa scouts have even compared the Southampton man’s playing style to that of former Villa player Jack Grealish.

The Midlands side are a serious contender to sign Dibling, impressing the player’s family, and have already built a rapport. Villa plan to keep an eye on the winger this season, watching how he develops. A move in January hasn’t been ruled out, but Villa are also confident that they will get a chance to sit down with Dibling and his representatives at the end of the season to discuss his future.

Imagine him & Johnson: Spurs battling PL rivals to land the next Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur’s recruitment of youth talents over the last couple of years has been exemplary, with the club shifting their focus to signing players who have the potential to be special in North London over the coming years.

Lucas Bergvall is just one example of the club’s recent transfer activity, signing from Djurgarden this summer, with the 18-year-old already featuring eight times this season for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The Swedish youngster has already proved that he’s more than capable of being a regular first-team squad member, aiding his development and allowing him to reach the potential he possesses.

Spurs also agreed a deal for centre-back Luka Vuskovic last summer, with the club forking out £12m for his services despite being just 16.

He’s already scored four times on loan for Belgian side Westerlo this season, appearing to be a real threat in both boxes despite now being just 18 years of age.

However, the club also currently employ a superb youngster who’s made a huge impact on Postecoglou’s first team squad over the last couple of weeks.

Brennan Johnson’s stats in 2024/25

Welsh winger Brennan Johnson moved to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium last summer for a huge £47.5m from fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

However, at times, it’s not been as successful as the 23-year-old would’ve envisioned, often being benched and often coming under fire for his below-par displays – as demonstrated in recent weeks.

The attacker was subject to abuse on social media, so much so that Johnson was forced to deactivate his Instagram account just to prevent any further backlash.

Undoubtedly, a select group of the fanbase took their frustration too far, but ever since the incident, the Welshman has found the form of his career – scoring in six consecutive matches for the very first time.

As a result, he’s now a key part of Postecoglou’s side – a stark contrast compared to just a couple of weeks ago.

The injury to Heung-min Son has seen a lack of goals, with the 23-year-old stepping up and taking responsibility at the top end of the pitch alongside club-record signing Dominic Solanke.

However, he could be aided in his attempts in attacking areas by the potential signing of one player who’s appeared on the club’s radar in recent days.

Spurs interested in landing talented sensation

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Spurs are battling Aston Villa over the signature of 23-year-old attacking midfielder Pavel Sulc.

The Czech Republic ace, who currently plies his trade for Viktoria Plzen, has enjoyed an excellent 12 months, registering 28 goals since the start of last season, along with nine assists – potentially providing an added attacking threat to Postecoglou’s side.

Sulc, who’s previously been dubbed as “incredible” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, could be allowed to leave the Czech side if the right price tag is met, according to boss Miroslav Koubek, but at this point, it’s unclear what the fee could be.

The attacking midfielder’s talents could play perfectly into the hands of current Spurs ace Johnson, with his assist tally undoubtedly handing the 23-year-old an increase in opportunities within the final third.

Former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen

Sulc could also be the club’s next Christian Eriksen, with Kulig claiming that the Plzen star is a similar player to the former Spurs fan-favourite, with his creativity and eye for a forward pass often catching the eye.

When delving into the 23-year-old’s stats from last season, the comparison is understandable, with Sulc averaging a tally of 0.6 progressive carries into the opposition penalty area per 90 last season, compared to Eriksen’s tally of 0.3 per 90 in the 2017/18 season – a campaign that saw the Dane register 26 goal contributions in all competitions.

Postecoglou’s side may face stiff competition for his signature in the months ahead, but Sulc’s talents would massively improve the club’s forward line, particularly if he can replicate the impact of a figure like Eriksen, who chalked up 69 goals and 88 assists in 305 games during a stellar stint in north London.

Sulc’s own goalscoring and creative quality is evident given the numbers produced over the last year, with Spurs needing to act quickly if they’re to continue their current of investing in youth prospects.
