West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui is a man under pressure right now, and it is believed the Spaniard is now plotting a shake-up to the starting line-up so he can fix a real problem concerning both him and the Hammers’ backroom staff.

The 58-year-old has guided West Ham to just two wins in the league so far, losing four and drawing two. At one point, the east Londoners went from late August to October without a single victory in all competitions, despite their near-£120 million expenditure on new signings in the summer window.

Pressure on Lopetegui was eased somewhat briefly with a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town recently, but they followed that up with a dismal defeat at Tottenham by the same scoreline. Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has even claimed that West Ham are considering Edin Terzic in the event they sack Lopetegui, so it is something the club are perhaps weighing up if results continue in this manner.

Lopetegui has big shoes to fill after David Moyes guided West Ham to their first major trophy since the 1980s, not to mention successive campaigns in Europe, and the former Spain boss is also attempting to gel together a very new-look squad.

West Ham are looking at signing a striker in January as well, amid Niclas Fullkrug’s injury woes, with Lopetegui forced to rely on the likes of Michail Antonio and Danny Ings to lead his line.

There are many factors at play which haven’t exactly helped Lopetegui, but journalist Dean Jones has still urged West Ham to sack the tactician.

“I’ll be honest, I’ve heard reports that there are a fair few people that are not convinced about Lopetegui, and obviously there was friction recently between him and Mohammed Kudus in the dressing room at half-time,” said Jones.

“So there are other layers here that could affect the situation, but there’s emotion too, that is going to impact how this goes, and we’ll see whether they’re (the West Ham board) on the right side of those feelings once we come out of this break.

“Honestly, I’d probably sack him (Lopetegui). I think they’ve got it wrong. I don’t think this is the right man for them. I think it’s a waste of time. I’d sack him.”

Edson Alvarez set for West Ham recall amid real Lopetegui worry

According to GiveMeSport, another major concern held by Lopetegui and his coaching staff is West Ham’s lack of solidarity and bite in midfield – specifically in front of the back four.

Guido Rodriguez and Tomas Soucek have partnered each other in the centre most often, but the pair haven’t exactly helped West Ham maintain control in midfield. This is seen as a big weakness by Lopetegui and his backroom, meaning they could turn back to Edson Alvarez.

Alvarez is set for a recall to West Ham’s starting XI in place of Rodriguez or Soucek as a result, as Lopetegui desperately attempts to turn their fortunes around and halt opponents from dominating them. The Mexico international is in line to start against Man United this weekend as a result, and their clash at the London Stadium represents an opportunity for Alvarez to stake his claim in the side.

Not long into that tenure, however, and the Spaniard is already struggling to get results, with five points in six games summing things up.

They once again failed to secure three points last time out too, with Bryan Mbuemo’s early goal forcing West Ham to come from behind to earn a point against Brentford.

A start which could force a rethink, West Ham may yet turn back towards the transfer market when January arrives to solve any early issues within Lopetegui’s side once and for all.

According to reports in Spain, Lopetegui now personally wants West Ham to sign Adam Hlozek from Hoffenheim in a deal that could take place as early as the January transfer window. The Bundesliga side reportedly value their forward at €18m (£15m) in a price tag that the Hammers should have no issues matching when the time comes.

Just 22 years old, Hlozek represents a long-term option who could swiftly replace Fullkrug, given that the German is already 31 years old and more of a stop-gap than a permanent solution for West Ham’s attacking problems this season. At such a cheap price, Hlozek will undoubtedly be one to watch if West Ham decide to grant Lopetegui’s wish in the winter window.

"Strong" Hlozek can solve West Ham problem

Without a goal in his first four appearances, Fullkrug’s slow start at West Ham has left the door ajar for the likes of Hlozek to potentially arrive and instantly solve Lopetegui’s attacking problem. The Hoffenheim star only just arrived at his new club in the summer, but has impressed enough to attract the attention of the London side in what would be his biggest move yet.

Unlike Fullkrug, the Czech has picked up where he left off last season to score three goals in his first six games for his new club in an impressive run that could only get better and better in the Bundesliga. Over the last 365 days, he ranks in the 98th percentile for shots per 90 and the 88th percentile for goals per 90 – compared with other strikers in similar leagues (FBRef).

A player who’s always earned plenty of praise for his all action style, Hlozek was described as “strong” by former coach Zdenek Scasny, who previously said via the Bundesliga’s official website: “In training, he looks as strong as in a match. He’s an extraordinary talent who doesn’t play just because he is 16, but because he has earned it.”

Years on now and that praise still rings true for a forward who is beginning to find his most clinical form in front of goal just as clubs like West Ham begin to look his way.

Still looking to add to their midfield, Liverpool are now reportedly keeping tabs on the progress of one transfer target who Michael Edwards could steal in to hijack ahead of Bayern Munich.

Whilst the Reds sit top of the Premier League even without a summer full of investment, they’ll be well aware of how unsustainable their position at the top is without the added depth they could welcome in 2025.

Of course, it wasn’t for the want of trying that a midfielder failed to complete a move to Anfield in the summer, with Martin Zubimendi simply changing his mind and rejecting Liverpool, but that’s not to say alternatives weren’t available.

With that said, those at Anfield have reportedly turned their attention towards a man in demand. According to The Boot Room, Edwards is now keeping tabs on Adam Wharton ahead of a potential move that would see Liverpool hijack a deal and jump ahead of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich as well as Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Wharton impressed against Liverpool last season, as Crystal Palace shocked the Reds to secure a rare Anfield victory. Since then, he has gone on to make his England debut and steal further headlines, before struggling alongside the rest of Oliver Glasner’s side in an early period to forget in the current campaign.

If the former Blackburn Rovers man swiftly returns to his best though, then there’s no doubt that the rumours over his Selhurst Park future will continue to arrive, with FSG, Edwards and Richard Hughes now firmly in the race.

"Incredible" Wharton could complete Liverpool midfield

At just 20 years old, Wharton’s first struggle for form was always going to arrive at one stage, but once he reaches the other side of his current blip, big things could once again await. He more than proved himself in his Anfield audition last season, winning eight out of 10 duels and making six tackles in a dominant display in the middle of the park. Now, as Liverpool look to add to their midfield, Wharton could emerge to become Slot’s missing piece.

Unsurprisingly, the Palace star has earned plenty of praise during his time at Selhurst Park, including from teammate Eberechi Eze, who said via BBC Sport: “Playing with him at Palace, I’ve got used to seeing the way he plays and understanding him. He’s very calm, composed, and a joy to play with.

“For someone so young, he’s very mature and very wise. When you speak to him, it feels like you’re speaking to someone older than you, that’s the type of person he is. He’s an incredible player.”

Alas, amid such impressive interest, those in South London may need to appreciate their midfielder whilst they still can, with Anfield potentially awaiting Wharton in 2025 despite Palace’s valuation of £100m.

With the January transfer window approaching sooner rather than later, one Champions League player has already packed his bags with Everton the only club named in the report as his potential next destination.

To say that Sean Dyche needed that recent run would be an understatement, amid rumours that the Friedkin Group have turned their attention towards the likes of Maurizio Sarri in preparation of completing their takeover at Everton. For now though, the former Burnley boss remains at the helm and tasked with continuing Everton’s turnaround in a crucial six-pointer against Ipswich Town after the international break.

If that remains the case by the January transfer window, then Dyche may even be handed a much-needed boost in the form of reinforcements, given recent links to a Champions League winger who looks destined to leave his current club.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, Samuel Chukwueze has already packed his bags at AC Milan with Everton the one club named as a possible destination. Valued at a reported €14m (£12m), the Nigerian has started just twice in the Serie A so far this season and is increasingly in need of a fresh start away from the San Siro.

Having only completed a move to Milan in the summer of 2023, a move away in January would sum up just how badly things have gone in Italy for Chukwueze in the last 14 months. However, what is Milan’s loss could quickly prove to be Everton’s gain if they make their move and get the winger back to his scintillating best.

"Great" Chukwueze would be impressive coup

Even after a difficult Milan spell, Chukwueze is more than capable of making an impact once he regains some much-needed confidence, which could come courtesy of Everton. This is still a winger who caught the attention of those in Italy after lighting up La Liga at Villarreal, and is still a winger who may well prove to be an impressive coup if those at Goodison Park take full advantage of his desire to leave Milan.

Of course, it must be said that those at the San Siro will still be frustrated that things are yet to work out for the winger who earned the praise of teammate Rafael Leao last season. The Milan star dubbed Chukwueze “great” but the 25-year-old has so far failed to replicate the 13 goals and 11 assists that he managed for Villarreal in the campaign prior to his move. Leaving the door open for Everton to make their move, they could now take full advantage in January.

In a comprehensive all-round bowling performance, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Imad Wasim, Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali found themselves amongst the wickets while keeping the run-scoring down, before a majestic half-century from Babar Azam, and an unbeaten 24-ball 46 from Fakhar Zaman put West Indies out of their misery.West Indies had won the toss and opted to bat first, but found themselves tied down by a disciplined Pakistan bowling attack. Andre Fletcher fell cheaply while Lendl Simmons and Chris Gayle found themselves bogged down, the pair scoring 38 runs between them in 53 deliveries as West Indies fell well behind the rate. Pakistan’s control over the innings continued almost unabated until the final over of the West Indies innings, when five successive fours by Pollard at Rauf’s expense pushed them to 130.That sort of chase is exactly what Babar and Mohammad Rizwan excel at, and they got Pakistan off to an assured start before Ravi Rampaul cleaned up the Pakistan wicketkeeper. It ushered in Fakhar, though who freed his arms with carefree abandon, taking the attack to Hayden Walsh in particular as Pakistan began to hurtle to victory. As if things couldn’t get any worse for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United, they’re now set to be without Kobbie Mainoo for a number of games in their latest injury blow.

Now, Mainoo’s absence is only likely to make matters worse.

The academy graduate was one of few bright sparks in an otherwise dim campaign last time out, as he emerged to become the star of the show against Liverpool and then against Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Left to star next to a struggling Casemiro last season, Mainoo has the chance to share the responsibility in the middle of the park with new signing Manuel Ugarte in the current campaign, but will have to wait for that partnership to form after the latest injury news.

As reported by Paul Hirst of The Times, Mainoo is now set to miss the next seven Manchester United games, which will include meetings against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in the Europa League and Chelsea in the Premier League.

How Ten Hag will replace Mainoo

Just when Manchester United had the options to transition Casemiro out of their starting side, Mainoo’s injury means that the Brazilian will likely step in and replace the academy graduate. Sitting alongside new man Ugarte, Mainoo’s injury could quickly become decisive in a crucial run of fixtures that Ten Hag must use to save his job at Old Trafford.

There would of course be plenty of unfortunate irony involved if Mourinho and Fred’s Fenerbahce side proved to be the nail in the coffin for the Dutchman’s tenure, especially given how useful the latter would be in place of Mainoo for this run of fixtures.

Nonetheless, Ten Hag must use those at his disposal and hope that Casemiro rediscovers the form of his first season at the club rather than the version that Old Trafford has seen at the heart of their side in a last year full of moments to forget.
