'Are you not entertained?' – Ange Postecoglou predicts pundit meltdown over his 'lack of tactics' as Tottenham coach defends player mistakes in wild win vs Man Utd

Spurs into Carabao Cup semi-finalsPrevailed in seven-goal thriller with Red DevilsAustralian coach will not change his waysFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?

The Australian tactician has channelled his inner Russell Crowe and gone full Gladiator mode after seeing Spurs grind out a thrilling 4-3 victory over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals – a contest that they led 3-0 at one stage before individual errors gifted the Red Devils a lifeline.

AdvertisementWHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

Postecoglou has faced questions throughout his reign in north London over a supposed lack of tactical nous, with it not in his nature to dig in and defend a lead. He appreciates that approach may not be to everyone’s liking, telling after booking a last-four spot in League Cup competition: "We made it harder than it should have been, we were well in control, played really well, we looked like we were going to manage the game and then two unfortunate moments, the first one affected Fraser [Forster] and then the second one came as a result of that. But we showed character and scored a fourth.

"I like the whole game. Are you not entertained? I know the studio is probably having a meltdown over my lack of tactics. We’ve got so many absences at the moment, centre halves, kids on the bench. If we get through the period we’re going to get enormous growth out of it."

Getty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

He went on to say: "I really liked how we played, obviously those moments tainted it a bit and that has happened this season before and it doesn't help our consistency, but the mentality of the boys… I love it. I love football and love watching teams that go out there to entertain.

"Obviously we want to be successful and we won’t be if we make things difficult like we did. We’re not going out there to try and grind out 1-0 victories, we’re trying to keep folks entertained. I can’t see how that’s a bad thing. It’s part of football, mistakes will happen. From the context of how we play as a team, there’s nothing we need to change. It doesn't get me any credit in the bank as an astute tactician, but so be it."

The World Cup winner became another ‘Galactico’ at Santiago Bernabeu during the summer of 2024. A slow start to life with the Blancos saw early questions asked of whether Mbappe – who is being deployed as a central striker – was the right option for Real.

Mbappe has also been left out of the last two France squads, amid questions of his commitment to that cause and general mental state, but a proven performer has rediscovered his spark to register five goals through his last seven – landing a second trophy with Real in the process.

    WHAT POLSTER SAID

His next outing will come against Sevilla, with former Los Nervionenses striker Toni Polster expecting Mbappe to silence any critics and become a legend in Madrid. He has told : “I think he is spectacular. It is true that he has not started at Real Madrid at his best level, but when he solves his emotional problems and is fully adapted he will enjoy and succeed because he has everything you can ask of an attacking player. Tottenham dealt another Arsenal worry as "world class" ace limps off injured

Ange Postecoglou has been dealt another Tottenham injury worry ahead of the north London derby, with a "world-class" Spurs player injured on international duty.

Tottenham vs Arsenal – team news and injury updates

The Lilywhites host Arsenal this weekend in what is one of their biggest games of the Premier League season, and Postecoglou will be hoping that he can help to spoil Mikel Arteta's title charge early doors.

Arsenal are without summer signing Mikel Merino this weekend, with the Spaniard fracturing his shoulder in training and could be out for nearly two months. Declan Rice is also a big miss for Arteta and won't play a part after he was sent off for two bookable offences in their last game against Brighton.

Captain Martin Odegaard is a huge doubt for the clash at Tottenham as well, following the midfielder's ankle sprain, which forced him off during Norway's 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over Austria on Monday.

Riccardo Calafiori could miss the north London derby too, after suffering a freak injury on international duty for Italy, so Arteta has been dealt numerous selection headaches and concerns ahead of their face-off with Spurs.

For Tottenham, important trio Micky van de Ven, Richarlison and marquee summer signing Dominic Solanke missed their most recent 2-1 defeat away at Newcastle, but there is optimism that both van de Ven and Solanke could return against Arsenal.

"Micky was close, he trained this week, but he's not quite 100 per cent," said Postecoglou on van de Ven.

"Part of me was keen to give Radu a run as well, especially at this venue, so we've gone with Radu. It's nothing serious, we've a heavy programme after the international break. We're going to need all our back four, so getting Radu a game is positive for us."

Solanke has been absent since his sustaining an opening weekend ankle injury away to Leicester City, but Postecoglou has since revealed that the Englishman is close to returning.

“Dom is close but we're going to be a bit cautious with him," said Postecoglou in an injury update on Solanke.

"We've got a big programme post the international break, so he'll miss out on Sunday.”

Richarlison is still seen as a real doubt for Tottenham and is likely not to feature against Arsenal, with Postecoglou sharing that the Brazilian is set to be out for weeks.

Tottenham forward Richarlison

“The only other one we got midweek is Richarlison," said Postecoglou on Richarlison's injury, just before Spurs faced Newcastle.

"Picked up an injury in training, so he'll probably miss the next few weeks.”

While Richarlison isn't expected to return for Tottenham until later this month, Postecoglou has been dealt another potential injury absence on top of the 27-year-old.

Yves Bissouma limps off after suffering injury against Estawini

Concerns now surround midfielder Yves Bissouma, and whether he will be able to play against Arsenal.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma

Bissouma was forced off with an injury during Mali's 1-0 win over Estawini in midweek, with the 28-year-old limping off in the 64th minute after a heavy challenge. He scored Mali's only goal of the game in the seventh minute, but it couldn't have been a worse end to the 90, as he now waits to discover the severity of his injury.

The £35 million ace, called "world-class" by presenter Adam Smith, has started two Premier League games under Postecoglou so far this campaign, scoring a rocket in their 4-0 win against Everton.

Aston Villa’s "serious talent" is now worth 111% more since Emery took over

One of the most underrated academies in the Premier League currently is that of Aston Villa. Since the competition rebranded from the First Division in 1992, the Villans have produced some excellent players, including the competition’s all-time leading appearance maker, Gareth Barry.

Other players produced from Villa’s underrated academy include Jack Grealish, whose £100m move from the Villans to Manchester City was once a British transfer record, and Gary Cahill, a Champions League winner with Chelsea.

Aston Villa winger Jack Grealish.

Since Unai Emery took over managerial duties at Villa Park, he has nurtured some more homegrown talent, but one player, in particular, has stood out and has seen his value rise greatly in the time Emery has been in charge.

Jacob Ramsey’s value in the 2022/23 season

The player in question here is Jacob Ramsey. The 23-year-old midfielder is a boyhood Villan and was born locally to the club, in Birmingham. He made a rapid rise from the youth ranks to the first team and has since become a key player for his boyhood side.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

The former England under-21 international has particularly been making waves under Emery, with the Spaniard helping him to fine-tune his game and become the “serious talent” widely known today, as football scout Antonio Mango described him.

The former Arsenal boss took charge at Villa Park in October 2022. In November, a then 21-year-old Ramsey was valued at just £23.6m, according to Transfermarkt. He was still breaking through into the Villa first team, although previous manager Steven Gerrard had given him several opportunities.

However, when Emery took charge, the youngster really showed his class. In that first season under the Spanish tactician, the 2022/23 campaign, the Birmingham-born attacking midfielder played 24 times, scoring five times and grabbing seven assists.

Impressively, all five of those goals, along with six of the assists, came in the Premier League, a competition in which he made 22 appearances. That is his best return in a single top-flight season to date.

By the end of the season, the youngster’s value had shot up, and he was worth £27m as a result of his impressive performances.

Ramsey’s value in 2023/24

Sadly for Ramsey, the 2023/24 campaign was hampered by injury. The 23-year-old missed 27 games over 186 days with three different ailments last term. First, a foot injury kept him sidelined before he missed a short period with a hamstring issue, and then a toe injury which kept him out for 17 games and 119 days.

With all that time on the sideline, the attacking midfielder did not quite manage to hit the same highest as he did previously. Last term, he played 21 games in all competitions, scoring one goal and grabbing two assists. Just one goal and assist apiece came in the top flight, in 16 games.

It was certainly a frustrating time for Ramsey, although his value did still rise slightly. By June this year, he was worth an impressive £50m, a price Villa slapped on his head, according to Football Insider. This certainly shows just how much he has thrived under Emery. In all, his value under the Spaniard rose an impressive 111% from when he first took charge at Villa Park.

The Villa number 41 has started the new season strongly. He has made three appearances so far, although is yet to start a game as he is eased back to fitness. Ramsey already has an assist to his name, for Jhon Duran against West Ham United, a goal that proved to be a winner.

There is no doubt that, in Ramsey, the Villans have their next academy star in the making. If he can stay fit this season, he could once again put up some stellar numbers under Emery as Villa look to impress on the biggest stage, the Champions League.

Emery can ease Bailey blow by unleashing Aston Villa’s "top young player"

Aston Villa return to Premier League action this weekend as they face a struggling Everton side.

Unai Emery will be hoping the international break didn’t do too much damage to his players. Ezri Konsa did withdraw from the England squad after suffering a knock against Finland, but it appears he has escaped injury.

Leon Bailey is one player who will definitely miss the clash against the Toffees, suffering a hamstring injury against Leicester City and could face up to ten weeks out of action.

He was arguably one of Emery’s key players last term and will be a big miss.

Leon Bailey’s statistics for Villa this season

The former Bayer Leverkusen star registered 28 goal contributions last season – 14 goals and 14 assists – as Villa secured a top four finish in the Premier League.

The winger played in the first three league matches for the club thus far yet failed to score or grab an assist before disaster struck against the Foxes.

Despite not hitting the heights of last term, Bailey’s absence will be felt by Emery, especially with matches coming thick and fast, both domestically and in Europe.

The question for Emery now is, who replaces the winger in the starting XI against Everton?

Jacob Ramsey could be the ideal replacement for Leon Bailey

Ramsey was the player who came off the bench to replace Bailey after he suffered his injury against the Foxes a couple of weeks ago, shining in the process.

During his 63 minutes on the pitch, Ramsey completed 87% of his passes, made two key passes, created a big chance, and succeeded with 100% of his dribbles (3/3), meaning he offered plenty going forwards.

Defensively, the Englishman also won five of his eight ground duels along with making two tackles, showing that he is capable of contributing in other areas of the park.

While the right flank may not be his ideal position, gaining minutes in the starting XI will be of major importance to the midfielder as he seeks to become a regular in the first team under Emery.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke lavished praise on the youngster in 2023 when speaking to Football FanCast, saying: “Villa are lucky they’ve got such a top young player on their hands and they won’t want to even consider selling him.

“In the going market right now, he’s probably in the £50m bracket at least, but I don’t think Aston Villa would even consider selling him. They want to keep him and build a team around him going forward.”

Tottenham Hotspur were interested in signing Ramsey during the summer transfer window, but no move materialised, which could prove to be crucial for the Midlands side this season, as they now have him available to be called upon.

If Ramsey performs well against the Toffees this evening, it could see him emerge as a key player for the club over the coming weeks, especially with Bailey missing important matches due to injury, which would provide him with plenty of game time and Emery with a solution to his problem on the right flank.

Club tell Spurs they can sign £45k-p/w ace for cut-price deadline day fee

Tottenham Hotspur have been told by one club that Spurs can strike a cut-price deadline day move for a member of their squad, with the player offered out to Premier League sides in a last-gasp attempt to sell.

Spurs could still make one more signing before 11pm

Throughout this week, the consensus among reliable media sources, including Fabrizio Romano, is that Ange Postecoglou and co may still look to add one more name to their ranks before the cut-off at 11pm.

The Lilywhites have been exceptional at keeping their latest transfer dealings quiet, as evident by the sudden nature of their Wilson Odobert signing from Burnley around a fortnight ago, and it is believed Spurs could be working on a last-minute opportunity.

“The deal they did with Burnley [for Odobert] was completely silent," said Romano to GiveMeSport earlier this week.

"So, I think they're still working on something, and I'm told they're still working on something, but there is still nothing concrete or close to being completed. But I can confirm Tottenham are still in the market for opportunities.”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

This follows reports that Tottenham are prioritising a new midfielder late in the day, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray and Yves Bissouma standing out as Postecoglou's only available options ahead of a long and congested season.

Spurs also have finances available following a number of key player sales, including Oliver Skipp, who completed a £20 million switch to Leicester City recently.

This week, the north Londoners have been linked with both Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes and Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, as journalist Dean Jones points out that the club want a new midfield runner.

“One thing I have been told a few times if that they want someone with power from the midfield," said Jones on the Ranks FC Ultras podcast (via TBR).

"Morgan Gibbs-White is someone they like but they like him as more of a number eight breaking out, not as a traditional number eight. They like that and they like Joao Gomes at Wolves."

However, deals for either player could be far too difficult to pull off this late in the window.

Tottenham told they can sign Josh Brownhill for cut-price fee

According to GiveMeSport, another midfield option, and a far cheaper one, could be Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

The Clarets are looking to sell after their relegation to the Championship, and have offered him out to numerous Premier League sides, including Spurs. GMS write that Burnley have made Tottenham aware they can sign Brownhill for a cut-price £5 million fee, as they have with both Everton and Fulham.

The 28-year-old made 33 English top-flight appearances last season, scoring four goals and registering two assists, and he is on a reported wage of around £45,000-per-week.

Liverpool player ratings vs West Ham: Mohamed Salah is playing on Lionel Messi mode, as he scores and assists again to give Reds eight-point Premier League lead

Arne Slot's side will head into 2025 on a huge high after tearing apart a sorry Irons team at the London Stadium

Liverpool opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a ridiculously comfortable 5-0 win away at West Ham on Sunday. The Reds made the most of facing a Hammers team stuck in an identity crisis and tore Julen Lopetegui's side to shreds on a bitter evening in the east end of London.

On the half-hour mark, Liverpool deservedly went in front. Luis Diaz tried to slip through Curtis Jones, only for Vladimir Coufal to block the pass. However, the ball fell kindly for the Colombian again as he bulldozed his way into the penalty area, and he left Alphonse Areola flat-footed with a strike at the near post.

From out of nothing, West Ham nearly pulled level. Mohammed Kudus breezed his way infield and let fly 25 yards from goal, striking the frame of the post to the relief of the beaten Alisson. And the Hammers were made to pay immediately as Liverpool doubled their lead with their next attack, as Alexis Mac Allister's high pass over the West Ham backline appeared destined for the offside Mohamed Salah, but he let the ball run for Diaz instead. The Reds' No.7 played Salah in when he returned to an onside position and chopped his way inside, where he was met by a barrage of panicked defenders, before Cody Gakpo reacted quickly to turn the ball past Areola.

Salah managed to get in on the act with a goal of his own before the half-time whistle. West Ham lost possession in their own half, with Jones quickly finding Salah free on the edge of the box, and he calmly passed the ball in to send the home fans straight to the concourses.

Areola denied Salah a brace straight out of the blocks for the second half after the Egyptian broke West Ham's shoddy offside trap as Liverpool sought to add to their first-half helpings. Indeed, the visitors soon had their fourth, courtesy of a deflected Trent Alexander-Arnold strike, with his 25-yard effort cannoning in off the head of Maximilian Kilman.

Some understandably slack Liverpool defending saw Kudus allowed a free header from the penalty spot late in the day, yet he could only find the woodwork again as this time his effort bounced off the bar. Salah, mercifully, skied over from a similar distance from the next passage of play with a wicked half-volley.

But the Egyptian was in no mood to let West Ham off any lighter when he turned on the style for his side's fifth, carrying the ball 50 yards up the pitch before releasing Diogo Jota to score with a fine finish, wrapping up the scoring for good.

GOAL rates Liverpool's players from London Stadium…

Getty Images SportGoalkeeper & Defence

Alisson (6/10):

A spectator for the most part, though one with the privilege of a close-up view. Caught scrambling when Kudus hit the post before Liverpool turned up the heat, though that was as dangerous as his day got.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (8/10):

Looked as assured and confident as ever despite the man-marking of Emerson. Will no doubt have sent the rumour mill into overdrive with a cryptic celebration after scoring Liverpool's fourth.

Joe Gomez (6/10):

Withdrawn just before the break with a leg injury. Had played pretty well beforehand, and with Konate already out, this will be a bitter blow for Liverpool if his issue is serious.

Virgil van Dijk (7/10):

Became more proactive with his defending after Gomez's substitution. Given that's also around the time Liverpool took the game completely away from West Ham, he didn't have too much to do regardless.

Andy Robertson (5/10):

Probably the only Liverpool player who had some hairy moments to contend with, occasionally finding himself in trouble up against the tricky Kudus.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Ryan Gravenberch (7/10):

A calming presence as ever in midfield, so effortlessly tidying up whenever West Ham threatened to string a few passes together. Afforded a rest by being taken off on 57 minutes.

Alexis Mac Allister (8/10):

More combative than the soothing Gravenberch, complementing each other perfectly. Involved in the build-up for the second and third goals, firstly with a defence-unlocking pass and then an aggressive challenge to win possession back.

Curtis Jones (7/10):

Flitted between the lines making an impact wherever he had the ball. Crashed the box and on another day may have had a goal for himself.

Getty Images SportAttack

Mohamed Salah (10/10):

There's only a finite number of ways to say a player is amazing. The English thesaurus has been exhausted with ways to describe Salah's performances and at some point we're going to have to invent some new words. West Ham were visibly scared of Salah from the off, and he made them dance to his every whim.

Luis Diaz (8/10):

Another outing in which winger Diaz has looked a natural playing as a centre forward. Knew when to drop deep to allow Jones to bomb on and his wingers to cut inside, but also bundled his way to the last line when appropriate as well.

Cody Gakpo (8/10):

Played with the directness perhaps more reminiscent of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, though that helped here in tearing apart a tragic West Ham backline. Taken off at the same time as compatriot Gravenberch.

Jarell Quansah (6/10):

Replaced the injured Gomez. Didn't have too much to get his teeth sunk into, to be fair.

Wataru Endo (6/10):

Given extended Premier League minutes when he replaced Gravenberch for the final third of the game. The intensity of the affair had gone by then and he was easily able to play at walking pace.

Diogo Jota (7/10):

Brought on for Gakpo. Brought the best out of Areola before eventually finding the net himself.

Harvey Elliott (6/10):

Given a 20-minute runaround in place of Jones.

Kostas Tsimikas (6/10):

Came on for Robertson when Elliott was too introduced.

Arne Slot (9/10):

Made only one change from their Boxing Day triumph over Leicester, yet you could hardly accuse Liverpool of lacking freshness. The Reds were by far the best team from start to finish in east London.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

During a live show of The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker expressed his disillusionment with the ceremony, citing recent changes such as a new production company and the restriction against going off script during interviews.

  • WHAT LINEKER SAID

“People are starting to assume that it was part of my kind of termination or forthcoming termination with the BBC,” Lineker said. “But, just to make it clear, what happened with Sports Personality of the Year is that it went to an independent production company and it was granted at the start of the year. Now, I saw that as an opportunity to get out of presenting Sports Personality. It’s a great show, but it’s the one TV gig that I never really enjoyed.

“I think I share that with Des Lynam, who did it for many years as well. It’s a very strange show to do. Also, it’s the one thing where every single word that you say on it has to be agreed by all parties at the BBC. Every single interview you do, you have to say what questions you’re going to ask. I mean, I like to ad lib, I like to go off piste. You can’t do it [on] Sports Personality, not in recent times. Every nominee had to have exactly the same time of interviewing, so as to be impartial and fair.

“It was purely that. So, it was February, and it’s nothing to do with my recent announcement. There were four presenters, and four presenters is too many for that show anyway. There you have it.”
