Spurs struck gold on £40m ace who’s now worth even more than Eze

Eberechi Eze is a name that’s been circulating in the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase over the last few weeks.

The reason for this is due to the Crystal Palace star being linked with a move to Spurs recently, and given his quality, it’s no surprise the Lilywhites faithful are excited.

Palace’s number ten was absolutely instrumental in the Premier League, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists.

A big price tag may well be needed to prise him away from Selhurst Park, although it's not more than one of their current star men.

What Spurs paid for Cristian Romero

Prior to the start of the 2021/22 campaign, Tottenham reinforced their backline with Cristian Romero from Atalanta.

The Argentine moved to Spurs off the back of an impressive Champions League and Serie A campaign in Bergamo, picking up three goals and five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

Romero originally joined on a season-long loan, starting 22 league games in his debut Premier League season and becoming an important player.

Therefore, upon the expiration of his loan, Spurs triggered his option to buy for £41m without hesitation, with Daniel Levy viewing him as a player who could develop into a world-class defender at Tottenham.

Christian Romero and Son Heung-min applaud the fans after a Premier League clash from Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Romero’s signature wasn’t exactly cheap, as they also had to meet his salary demands, and he eventually signed a £165k per week deal until 2027.

Romero’s transfer value in 2024

His first season as a permanent Spurs player featured plenty of ups and downs, including picking up two red cards.

However, under Ange Postecoglou, the World Cup winner has progressed brilliantly, starting 33 times in the Premier League last season.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero

The centre-back ended the campaign as Spurs’ fourth-highest goalscorer with five, while also boasting the most passes completed, interceptions, and clearances in the squad.

Tottenham’s “perfect” defender, as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, has truly become irreplaceable, acting as a true leader at the heart of the backline, but what is he exactly worth today?

Well, as you can see from the table above, Romero is now estimated to be worth an incredible £51m, as per Transfermarkt.

This makes the 26-year-old the fourth-most valuable centre-back in the entire Premier League, only behind the Arsenal duo and Ruben Dias, which just proves how important he truly is.

On top of that, he’s currently the second-highest valued player in the entire Spurs squad, only behind James Maddison, who’s worth £59m.

Interestingly, despite the season that Eze just had, Romero is also worth more than the attacking midfielder, who’s currently valued at £47m. The Palace sensation was a true hit last term and would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham.

Fans may even get a look at him in action at Euro 2024 with the winger earning a well-deserved call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad for the tournament.

Nevertheless, as impressive as Eze has been, it’s also quite clear that Romero is one of the finest in England, with his £51m market value reflecting that perfectly.

Despite costing £41m originally, Spurs have truly hit the jackpot on the number 17, and if he continues to perform as he did last season, he’ll only be viewed as an even bigger bargain.

What Spurs' starting lineup could look like after £201m spending spree

Spurs will want to give Postecoglou everything he needs to build a successful side this summer.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mauricio Pochettino, who once played for Newell's Old Boys – the same team where Inter Miami's Lionel Messi spent his youth academy days – hailed the Argentine's influence on MLS.

In an interview with CNN Mexico, the new USMNT manager suggested that Messi's presence alone has helped raise the standard of the league – and predicted further success in the future.

Pochettino also touched the U.S. vs. Mexico rivalry and potentially coaching in his native Argentina one day in a wide-ranging interview.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pochettino's comments come ahead of his first two matches as U.S. boss – friendlies against Panama and Mexico. He accepted the USMNT job last month, and will face the task of preparing the squad for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in America, Mexico and Canada.

  • WHAT POCHETTINO SAID ABOUT MESSI

Pochettino praised Messi's influence on MLS: "The impact is impossible to measure because it is incredible. Not only on the fans, but on everything. The ability to motivate everyone, the entire structure around him, but the impact of seeing him compete with the players, especially those in the MLS… It will have an impact not only in the present, but over time, in the medium and long term. One thing that has been given is having the possibility of having the best player in the world competing there, being able to see him and touch him. I think that generates confidence and the ability to believe in the objectives that can be achieved in the future. Incredible."

  • WHAT POCHETTINO SAID ABOUT MEXICO

The new manager also spoke about the rivalry between the USMNT and Mexico: "It's clear that the mentality is always to win. And I can't say that I don't want to win the next game. We're going to want to win every game…But it's clear that the long-term approach is the World Cup and the goal is to arrive with the best possible preparation to compete in the best way possible at the World Cup. That said, we want to win every game, we want to win against Panama, we want to win against Mexico, with the circumstances we face in these games and obviously knowing that it is our first contact with these players and that time is limited. But the players also have to understand that time is limited. We have to adapt in the best way possible and that is through believing in what we are doing and being as willing as possible to understand the way in which we are going to apply all the concepts, and the philosophy in which we want to develop our game."

Stiaan van Zyl to fill 2021 overseas slot at Sussex but Kolpak 'joy-ride' over for David Wiese

End of Kolpak era means Wiese moving on but van Zyl will see out contract as an overseas player

Sussex have confirmed that Stiaan van Zyl will stay at the club in 2021 despite the end of Kolpak registrations, fulfilling his contract on overseas terms, while David Wiese’s time at Hove is set to come to an end.Van Zyl, who signed a three-year extension in early 2019 after initially joining the club in 2017, missed the 2020 county season due to restrictions on international travel and club finances, and it was mutually agreed that he would return as an overseas player next summer.Wiese, the South African allrounder, has left the club at the end of his contract after four seasons as a Kolpak player, but a Sussex statement said that he could still return as an overseas player for the T20 Blast. The ECB confirmed in writing to counties two weeks ago that Kolpak registrations would be invalid once the UK’s transition period with the European Union comes to an end on December 31, with affected players either leaving their clubs or re-signing as overseas players. Players with settled or pre-settled status in the UK through EU citizenship will be free to continue playing as locals.Counties will be allowed to field two overseas players in all formats next season, having previously been permitted only one in the County Championship and Royal London Cup.Travis Head, the Australia batsman, is due to be Sussex’s second main overseas player after having his contract for this summer deferred to 2021, but it remains to be seen which formats he will play. With Rashid Khan, whose contract was cancelled this year to allow him to play in the CPL and the IPL, also under consideration for a T20-only deal, it could be that van Zyl and Head only play in the County Championship and the Royal London One-Day Cup. “Obviously the government is kicking us out of here with Brexit at this stage, and I suppose the joy-ride had to come to an end at some stage,” Wiese joked after Sussex’s Blast quarter-final defeat to Lancashire last week. “It’s been a good couple of years for me, and hopefully it’s not the end.”I could come back as an overseas – obviously it’s trying times financially, a lot of the clubs are in tough positions and there are contracts in place with other players, so we’ll have to see what the future holds. I’ll go back home, chill out with a bit of family time and hopefully things work out in the future that I can come back here.”David Wiese carves into the off side•Getty Images

Wiese is the latest Sussex player to depart in a period of transition for the club. Luke Wells and Harry Finch will both be released at the end of their contracts, while Danny Briggs has signed for Warwickshire and Laurie Evans spent the season on loan at Surrey ahead of a permanent move. George Garton, Tom Haines and Delray Rawlins have all signed new deals.Meanwhile, head coach Jason Gillespie has returned home to take up the South Australia job, with the club not expected to recruit a replacement until the start of next year. Assistant coaches James Kirtley, Ian Salisbury and Jason Swift are all likely to be candidates.

Chelsea favourites to sign £60m "superstar" who could rival Palmer

Chelsea's on-pitch performance has been the direct inverse of the investment and ambition shown in recent years under Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali and Co.

Albeit improved form in the months building toward Mauricio Pochettino's departure salvaged Europa Conference League football after spending much of the campaign on middling ground, but this is hardly a shining achievement despite improving on the dismal 13th-place Premier League finish of 2022/23.

But Chelsea have now secured their project manager in Enzo Maresca, joining from Leicester City after winning the Championship with the Foxes in his maiden helmsman year, another acolyte streaking away from Pep Guardiola's all-engulfing managerial influence.

Supporters will hope for streamlined recruitment, and indeed the club are hoping to secure a transformational signing in the weeks to come.

Chelsea eyeing Premier League star

According to respected insider Simon Phillips, Premier League star Michael Olise is leaning toward a transfer to Chelsea over Manchester United, should he leave Crystal Palace this summer.

He stated: "A second source has now added more confidence that Olise will pick Chelsea over Manchester United, following on from my top source saying that last week. We will have to see how that one unfolds in the next days/weeks.”

Believed to have a £60m release clause with the high-flying Eagles, Olise is a long-term target at Stamford Bridge following his Cobham release in 2016, with the Blues even failing to convince the 22-year-old last summer despite meeting his £35m release clause. He then penned new terms.

Chelsea's instability likely deterred the winger from making a return, but Stamford Bridge is now confident of a resurgence and Olise could head the new era under Maresca's wing.

Why Michael Olise is so good

Micah Richards has already declared that Olise "is going to be world-class… he's going to be a superstar" back in February, and indeed the evidence suggests that Palace have a player of elite-level ability on their hands.

This season, Olise has scored ten goals and added six assists in the Premier League despite only starting 14 matches, honing his skill in the final third after an impressive 2022/23 season under Roy Hodgson, where he posted just two goals across 37 matches but did supply 11 assists for his teammates.

Typically found on the right wing, the £100k-per-week star is fast and furious, intelligent with his distribution and incisive in key moments, unleashing strikes and defence-splitting passes to equal effect.

As per FBref, the ace ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 3% for assists, the top 7% for shot-creating actions, the top 14% for passes attempted, the top 18% for progressive passes and the top 13% for successful take-ons per 90.

He's electric. Olise is headed right for the op and Chelsea would score an almighty success in bringing him back to the place where he cut his teeth as a teen. Every effort must be exhausted in making it happen.

How Michael Olise could fit in at Chelsea

Chelsea are already closing on their first signing of the summer in Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, who is opting for a cross-London switch despite the vested efforts of Newcastle United.

But when have the west London giants ever rested on their laurels? Paul Winstanley and the rest of the recruitment team will fix the wrongs of recent years and ensure that Chelsea do not drift to and fro – instead lifting themselves back to the forefront of domestic and continental competition.

Olise, it could be posited, would be the catalyst in ensuring such lofty dreams become actuality, with the right-sided attacker utterly brilliant for the Eagles this season. Sure, his fitness record leaves plenty to be desired but Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke are among the subsidiaries to balance the workload on the right flank.

Olise's creative genius – he has been described as "one of the best wide playmakers in Europe" by talent scout Jacek Kulig – was showcased during the 2022/23 campaign but he demonstrated his dynamism and stretched his wings onto a wider canvas this year, painting the Premier League in hues of his choosing.

Statistical deep-diving has already been covered but just take a look at the improvements made this season, taking his clinical level to soaring heights, sharpening his technical ability and proving more relentless in his desire to push play forward.

While he only featured in half of the Premier League's fixtures, Olise has proven himself worthy of a leading role in a project such as Chelsea's, where he could rival even Cole Palmer for a place as Maresa's attacking talisman.

Palmer signed from Manchester City in a £42.5m deal last summer and while his talent had been shown in flashes, few foresaw the staggering quality that has taken the division by storm.

Plainly, few have been able to withstand the torrent of Palmer's prolificness, the 21-year-old scoring 25 goals and supplying 15 assists from 45 matches for the Blues.

Manchester City's goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland boasts the best goal-per-match rate of any player on that list at 0.87, so it's rather telling that Olise's rate across the recently concluded Premier League campaign stands at 0.84.

Sure, he only featured throughout half of the campaign but the Les Bleus-aspiring phenom has proven himself – he is the real deal.

Chelsea would complete their attack by securing his signature, landing a versatile forward with potency to rival Palmer, who has even been hailed as "one of the best players in the Premier League" by pundit Jamie Carragher.

Olise has also found himself at the heart of such effusions, with Kulig dubbing him "one of the EPL's best players in recent weeks" back in January as he blitzed through opposition.

Chelsea must spend wisely to narrow the gap between themselves and the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, but with this signing, that might just happen.

Brendon McCullum calls on New Zealand to work out best T20 XI as World Cup looms

West Indies are a “very tough proposition” in upcoming series, says former captain

Reuters23-Nov-2020New Zealand’s T20I series against West Indies starting on Friday should be a springboard for the home side to look to improve their results and build a squad for next year’s World Cup, former captain Brendon McCullum said.New Zealand are second in the ICC Test rankings and third in one-day internationals, but struggling at sixth in the T20Is. The team lost their last two series at home and have won just seven of their last 20 matches in the shortest form of the game.McCullum, however, blamed the inconsistent results on the team’s efforts to succeed in the longer formats, using Twenty20 as a chance to develop new players or give veterans a rest.ALSO READ: Bond says resting Boult is important ‘for his own sanity'”T20 hasn’t been the best format for the New Zealand team of late and I know there is a deep desire to improve those results,” McCullum told reporters on a conference call on Monday.”I think with the T20 World Cup not being far away, now is the time to really start to drill down what your best XI will be and then you start to build a squad that will be competitive at the next World Cup. That’s why these games are so vital.”While Kieron Pollard’s side are ranked ninth in T20I cricket, they are the only side to have won the World Cup twice and are the defending champions for next year’s tournament in India.McCullum has an intimate knowledge of the West Indian talent, having guided the Trinbago Knight Riders to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title this year.”The West Indies are remarkable T20 cricketers,” said McCullum, who will also commentate on the series for new host broadcasters Spark Sports.”They have got immense flair right through their batting and bowling. They’re well led by Kieron Pollard and got a great mix of experience and youth. I think they will be a very tough proposition.”

Sunderland eyeing up "exciting" 4-3-3 manager who Dan Neil would love

Sunderland continue their search for a new permanent head coach after parting ways with former boss Michael Beale more than 100 days ago.

The Black Cats dismissed the ex-Rangers tactician earlier this year and decided to go with Mike Dodds as an interim until the end of the Championship season.

However, they have failed to find a successor to the English coach over the last three months and do not yet have a manager nailed down ahead of next season.

Michael Beale for Sunderland.

They have reportedly, though, narrowed down their shortlist of potential candidates to three managers, which suggests that progress is being made.

Sunderland eyeing up former Eredivisie boss

According to Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, former AZ Alkmaar manager Pascal Jansen is one of three names in the final frame to land the job at the Stadium of Light.

The reporter claims that St. Mirren chief Stephen Robinson and Dave Challinor, who currently manages Stockport County and just won League Two, are the two other men in the running.

AZ Alkmaar manager Pascal Jansen.

Jansen is the only one of the three out of work, as it stands, and this means that he could be the most attractive option for the Black Cats, as they would not have to pay any compensation to land him.

Sunderland could land a manager who current star midfielder Dan Neil would love by landing a deal to bring the English-born tactician to Wearside, ahead of Robinson and Challinor.

Why Dan Neil would love playing for Pascal Jansen

The 51-year-old boss, whose style was dubbed "exciting" by journalist Brian Wijker, typically deploys a 4-3-3 formation and his midfield consists of one anchor and two box-to-box midfielders who have license to buzz around the pitch.

In his last full season with Alkmaar, during the 2022/23 campaign, Jansen got the best out of central midfielder Tijjani Reijnders in a box-to-box role.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutch manager had his compatriot operating as an effective number eight who could make an impact at both ends of the pitch, with goals, assists, dribbles, tackles, and interceptions.

You can also see that Neil offered similar qualities in the middle of the park for Sunderland with his ability to make things happen in and out of possession.

Reijnders' form for Alkmaar during the 2022/23 campaign earned him a €20m (£17m) move to Italian giants AC Milan in the summer of 2023, possibly due to the fantastic platform that Jansen's 4-3-3 system provided him with.

The Dutch boss' two box-to-box midfield positions allowed the young star to thrive in the middle of the park in the Eredivisie, which then attracted interest from Milan.

Neil could now love playing for Jansen for the same reason as he could use his quality in and out of possession, as well as his athleticism, to thrive as one of the two number eights in the 4-3-3.

Sunderland eyeing move for Van Aanholt 2.0

Sunderland could potentially have their next Patrick Van Aanholt in the making with this buy.

He could help the English youngster to take another leap forward by making more key passes and dribbling more to show off his ability in transition, as Reijnders did, to put himself in the shop window for a bigger move in the future.
