Arsenal won the lottery with "exceptional" star worth 10x more than Partey

It was another bittersweet ending to a Premier League season for Arsenal this year as, despite coming on leaps and bounds, they once again just fell short in the face of the indomitable Manchester City.

It might take another summer of significant investments from the Kroenkes to help the club finally get over the line, but fans shouldn't forget the myriad of incredible talents they already have on their books, welcomed in by Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar.

Talents like Declan Rice, Ben White, and even Kai Havertz had a storming end to the campaign, but there is another crucial player who has come to life at the Emirates, a player who is currently worth ten times more than veteran midfielder Thomas Partey.

Martin Ødegaard's Arsenal career

The star in question is captain fantastic himself, Martin Ødegaard, who has become one of Arsenal's most important players both on and off the pitch over the last few years.

The Norwegian first joined the club on a six-month loan deal from Real Madrid in January 2021, and while he wasn't poor by any stretch of the imagination, it would be fair to say that his return of two goals and two assists in 20 games was somewhat underwhelming in the eyes of many.

However, Arteta and Edu, being the footballing masterminds they appear to be, opted to sign the former wonderkid on a permanent deal that summer for just £34m, and to say that was a brilliant decision today would be a colossal understatement.

In the three seasons since, the "exceptional" midfielder, as described by Pep Guardiola, has gone on to make another 133 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 32 goals, providing 36 assists, and taking on the captain's armband, all while still being just 25 years old.

Not only is the mercurial talent efficient in what he does and a brilliant leader on and off the pitch, but he also plays the game beautifully, often pulling off mesmerising feats of close control to beat a player, keep the ball, or play an inch-perfect through ball to Bukayo Saka out wide.

In all ways imaginable, Arsenal have a genuine world-beater for their club captain, and with his performances improving year-on-year, it's understandable to see his impressive valuation today.

Martin Ødegaard's valuation in 2024

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Odegaard is worth €100m, which comes to around £85m, or a whopping £51m more than Arsenal paid to sign him almost three years ago – talk about value for money.

Unsurprisingly, this new price makes the Norwegian the fourth most valuable player in the Premier League, alongside Cole Palmer, Gabriel Martinelli, and William Saliba.

It also means he is now worth considerably more than teammate Partey, or about ten times more, to be more specific, as the CIES price the Ghanaian international at just €10m, which converts to just under £9m.

This low valuation of a player who cost the Gunners around £45m in the summer of 2020 is likely due to three things: he is set to turn 31 next month, his contract expires next summer, and he has missed a colossal 72 games for club and country since the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

In all, while the former Atlético Madrid ace is clearly a talented player, he's too unreliable and on the wrong side of 30, so it's not all that surprising to see reports linking him with an exit this summer.

That said, while it's a shame that one of the side's star midfielders has seen his value plummet in the last season or so, Odegaard's soaring price is an excellent sign for the future, and with him as the captain, there is no telling what the Gunners will be able to achieve in the coming years.

The watching and waiting goes on as the Edgbaston drizzle endures

Paul Edwards witnesses a plague of Egypt descend on Birmingham’s big day out

Paul Edwards04-Oct-2020Click here for drip-by-drip updates from day two of the Vitality Blast Finals WeekendSaturday’s cricket was finally knocked on the head around six o’clock. The phrase was a colleague’s but a metaphor linked to putting a nearly dead fish out of its misery seemed perfectly appropriate. However, the ECB had a surprise for us all. If no cricket whatever is possible today we will not go straight to three bowl-outs but will foregather for another of these delightful Eisteddfods on Wednesday. For the avoidance of doubt, that is Wednesday, October 7.”Groundhog Day” said the chap from the ECB. It seemed a reasonable assessment, albeit somewhat lacking in originality. Those of us who envisioned a succession of Vitality Blast Finals Days being scheduled deep into the autumn and were already of a sadly irreverent bent were reminded of the Book of Hebrews, Chapter 13 Verse 8: “Jesus Christ, the same, yesterday, today and for evermore”.Yesterday I arrived at Edgbaston for the last day of the season, presented my credentials, had my temperature checked and was admitted to the ground. Today, ditto. Wednesday? These exceptional days make people doubt themselves. One remembers the 1945 portmanteau horror film which begins and ends with an architect played by Mervyn Johns arriving at a house and discovering he has met all the guests in a dream. That Ealing Studios movie is rightly regarded a classic and features a blood-freezing portrayal of a schizophrenic ventriloquist by Michael Redgrave. “The merging of dreaming and reality is what becomes truly terrifying,” wrote Philip French in (Connoisseurs of great writing and another classic may note that the Redgrave portrayal is, I think, referenced by Russell Lewis in “Neverland”, the last episode of season two of .)ALSO READ: Musings on an under-dressed statue on a Birmingham city-centre roundaboutEnough of this, you might observe, and you are probably right. But you can surely imagine my relief as I watch the Edgbaston groundstaff shifting the covers that surround the square and beginning the preparations for some sort of Finals Day. No one has a clue what sort of event will be possible. The umpire Mike Burns has said they won’t start unless they can get three games in. Fair enough, of course, but the length of such games has yet to be negotiated. One would have thought that two eight-over semi-finals and a 20-over final would be an exceptional outcome given that Birmingham has been visited by one of the plagues of Egypt this weekend.Of course, one of the hallmarks of great ghost stories is their ability to suggest the return of calm only to inflict more terror on the reader. I say this only because there was a light shower a few minutes ago, although it was not sufficient to force the fat-chewing coaches from the outfield. But any suggestion of further dampness currently brings on the ab-dabs. The rain’s stopped now. My guess is that we will get a Finals Day in today and that the affair will not be resolved by a bowl-out. Edgbaston is beginning to resemble a cricket ground once again. Then again, maybe I am just taking refuge in optimism. Anything to stop me thinking about Michael Redgrave and that bloody doll. It’s started raining again.

Ipswich could sign Hirst 2.0 in Euro 2024 star

As much as many Ipswich Town fans will be content with cheering on England at this Euros, a welcome summertime distraction before the nerves of a Premier League campaign kick in, there will no doubt be a sense of excitement in the air too for the top-flight.

The Tractor Boys will aim to take the top flight by storm and catch teams off-guard in the process, with this mentality sending shockwaves through the Championship on the way to promotion being sealed, but they will be abundantly aware that it will is a different kettle of fish altogether compared to the second-tier.

In order to traverse another leap up in quality, without letting the immense pressure get the better of them, Kieran McKenna and Co will try to litter the Ipswich squad with some more top talents, one of which is currently out in Germany at the Euros.

Ipswich face competition for ambitious signing

Credited with having a previous interest in current Chelsea man Armando Broja, Ipswich will know that they face extremely stiff competition to land the Albanian attacker's services, with a new development from Italian outlet CalcioMercato – via Sky Italia – stating that scouts from AC Milan are watching his progress in Germany with his national side.

With Everton and Southampton also keen back in England, alongside McKenna's men, it could be a tall order for the Tractor Boys to land the 6 foot 3 forward, ahead of other interested parties.

Armando Broja celebrating a goal for Chelsea.

Broja could be Hirst 2.0

After an uneventful showing against Italy in his country's opening game of the Euros – with just 22 touches mustered up against Italy – suitors from the likes of the San Siro and Goodison Park could now be put off going after him, especially with a dire loan spell at Fulham from last campaign also still fresh.

This could be where Ipswich swoop in, with Broja also teammates with former Tractor Boys loanee Omari Hutchinson at Stamford Bridge.

McKenna could well be the manager to get the best out of Broja again, after the 22-year-old managed just eight appearances at Craven Cottage last season out loan, with only a solitary assist to show for his troubles.

The much-loved Tractor Boys boss managed to get a tune out of a once misfiring George Hirst last campaign, who routinely fired blanks for previous employers such as Rotherham United, enduring a horrendous barren 2020/21 season with the Millers.

However, at Ipswich, he has been turned into a consistent figure under his new manager's guidance.

Since McKenna's arrival into the building, Hirst has managed to net 14 goals across two campaigns – with seven of those aiding Ipswich's promotion bid last season – which is a fair chunk of the 47 goals he's managed across his full up-and-down career.

Therefore, the stuttering Broja will aim to be revived himself by McKenna in a bid to become the confident attacker he once was when he was donning a Southampton strip.

Indeed, his nine-goal haul during the 2021-22 season saw him rival a number of Ipswich attackers from their promotion campaign, with Hirst falling just short with his goalscoring numbers when comparing the two.

Once described as being a "strong" attacker by one of his former Chelsea managers in Frank Lampard, Broja would also be able to plug a gap in the squad with Kayden Jackson no longer on the books, offering Ipswich an imposing forward option away from more intricate attackers such as Conor Chaplin.

Armando Broja

Ipswich will know they need to press on with new signings soon, as the date for the Premier League fixtures getting announced grows closer, with Broja a statement purchase if it happens.

Jason Gillespie surprised England, Australia did not take a knee but backs 'genuine intent for change'

Gillespie also identifies with experiences of fellow Indigenous Australian player Dan Christian

Jason Gillespie understands fears – expressed by Michael Holding last week – that teams failing to take a knee in support of Black Lives Matter could mean cricket risks losing momentum in the fight against racism.Following Holding’s criticism of the Australia and England teams for not taking a knee in support of the movement during their limited-overs series, Gillespie – who is of Indigenous Australian descent – said he was in favour of doing so, but he was also confident that Cricket Australia and the ECB were committed to positive change.”I think it’s a nice gesture, I think it’s powerful,” Gillespie told ESPNcricinfo.”I saw Michael Holding make the comment. I think his worry is that it’s been a gesture and a very good gesture but it will get forgotten if it’s not continually out there reminding people. I’m sensing that’s what he feels, he wants to continue the story.”I think everyone would agree that things have happened in this world, people make a gesture and then it gets forgotten. So Michael’s thoughts, and I agree with what he’s saying, is let’s keep the gesture going, let’s keep the intent and keep it at the forefront of people’s minds and then we can keep having the conversations to inspire real change. And I susbscribe to that. I think he makes a good point.”However, I understand the Australian and England teams. They gave their reasons, they’re talking about education and moving forward. I think there’s genuine want and desire, both from the ECB and Cricket Australia and however they go about it, as long as we see genuine commitment to that, I think we can all hopefully move forward and see meaningful change.”ALSO READ: Gillespie condemns Yorkshire league chairman’s attack on RafiqHolding’s comments prompted Australia coach Justin Langer to acknowledge that his side did not commit enough time to learning about the issue before making a decision. But the remarks also drew a reaction from Jofra Archer, who claimed Holding “doesn’t know anything that is going on behind the scenes” and that progress was being made “in the background”.Speaking about the movement ahead of the tour to England, Aaron Finch, Australia’s captain, said that “education around it is more important than the protest”.On the decision by Australia and England not to take a knee, Gillespie said: “I was a little bit surprised they didn’t do it, however, they explained – Cricket Australia, the ECB – I think there is genuine intent for change.”Gillespie, who is Archer’s coach at Sussex, recently stood up for his player on Twitter, branding the racist abuse Archer faces on social media as a “disgrace”.Gillespie also identified with the experiences of another Indigenous Australian cricketer, Dan Christian, who has spoken of having his Aboriginality questioned, based on his appearance, in what he described as “casual racism”.”I can understand where Dan’s coming from,” Gillespie said. “I can remember having a similar experience at a function in the UK. It’s a bit annoying, however I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, the subject came up, I mentioned that I’m Indigenous and I was acknowledged as the first Aboriginal male Test cricketer in Australia.”And a couple of these people looked at me and said: ‘Really? Surely not.’ And I said: ‘What’s the issue? I think I know who I am, I’m of Aboriginal descent. I was the first acknowledged male Test cricketer of Aboriginal descent in Australian cricket.'”And they’re basically questioning me, they’re saying, ‘No, no you’re not, you can’t be, you don’t look Aboriginal’. I said, ‘Well, I know who I am’. And then I just left it. That’s one experience I had because it’s just assumed that you have to look a certain way to be someone.”Gillespie said he could empathise with British people of Asian descent who are born in the UK but are then questioned when they say they come from their birthplace.”It just comes down to education,” Gillespie said. “That situation that I was in, I genuinely don’t think there was any malice intended or any negativity, but the education needs to be better.”I know I don’t look like the stereotypical Indigenous person that people would see. I get that. But it’s that naivety that I suppose can be, and I’m assuming is, a real frustration for people.”I assume for people here in the UK, British Asians, that frustration, that ‘Why can’t you just accept the fact that I am born and bred here? This is my country. This is what I look like. This is who I am. Just be happy for who I am.'”To Gillespie, the solution is simple: “Everyone, just be accepting of everyone. We can cloud these issues over and over again but surely just keeping things simple, just accept people for who they are and everyone have a smile on their face and move on. It can’t be that difficult.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

On Tuesday night, Neto made a significant impact, staking his claim for a regular spot in the Chelsea attack after he scored his first goal for the Blues in their emphatic 5-0 victory over Barrow in the Carabao Cup third round. He was used by Maresca on the right wing, while Mudryk slotted in at the left flank with Christopher Nkunku leading the lines.

  • WHAT NETO SAID

Reflecting on the competition within the squad, Neto told reporters that, “With the amount of quality that we have here, no one can sleep. As the coach has said, 'Everyone will not play every game.' So we have to work hard and push ourselves every weekend, every training session, every game. That’s the mentality that can take us to the top.”

He added: "Everyone has to work hard. When you arrive at a big club, it is a new adaptation. Maybe in Wolverhampton, I was going to play maybe 90% of the games. Here I have to work even more or maybe I'll not play because the coach will rotate the players. It makes you play even better because you know that you have to work. But even at Wolverhampton, if I was playing 90% of the games, I would go into every training session to be the best."

Pat Cummins' advice to Kamlesh Nagarkoti: 'Stay patient and believe you can play till 36 or 37'

There are four parallels that can be drawn between Pat Cummins and Kamlesh Nagarkoti. The first one is that they achieved fame as teenagers, the Australian as an 18-year-old Test debutant in 2011 and the Indian as an 18-year old at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup. The second one is that both are right-arm fast bowlers. Thirdly, they are part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, and finally both have had to deal with injuries after breakthrough outings. After suffering a stress fracture to the back, Cummins had to wait for nearly six years before he would play Test cricket again for Australia while Nagarkoti hasn’t played top-flight cricket at all since February 2018, having suffered ankle and back injuries. When Nagarkoti was undergoing rehabilitation in Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy, Rahul Dravid, who had coached him in the Under-19 World Cup, would often cite the example of Cummins – currently the world’s No. 1 Test bowler – to motivate him. Now that both men are sharing the same dressing room at Knight Riders, Cummins has some advice for Nagarkoti, who prepares to feature in his first IPL, having been sidelined since he was bought before the 2018 season.ALSO READ: Russell ideal for ‘last ten overs of a T20 game’ – McCullum“The big one that all the coaches and ex-players would advise you is a simple thing – you need to be patient,” Cummins told , when asked what advice he would like to give Nagarkoti. “It is really an easy thing to say and think of but an 18-year-old missing games is actually a very hard thing to live with.”You just need to have the trust that you might miss a season or two at the start of your career but you might end up playing till the age of 36 or 37, as opposed to 31 or 32. Everything that you do during this time, sets up the foundation block for a long and healthy career. Even when I was not playing, I used to hang out with my team-mates. 90% of the time I love cricket is because I can hang out with my mates.”Getty Images

For a kid growing up near the Blue Mountains and getting his New South Wales debut at 17, the initial stages of Cummins’ career had seemed rosy. He said “everything happened so quickly” at first, progressing from giving his school exams to playing first-class cricket a couple of weeks later. But the injury, too, came out of the blue, and it left him spending valuable summer days on the sidelines, while his friends and team-mates played cricket.”It was certainly a few tough years,” Cummins recalled. “Since I was six years old, summers for me would mean cricket. I will spend weekends and every day after school playing cricket. And then suddenly, I was a professional cricketer but I wasn’t playing any cricket during summer. It was all weird.”There were these great games at SCG I would feel like playing but I was injured. It was so close but because I was injured, I couldn’t even go and play backyard cricket. In terms of the schedule, just at the start of the Aussie summer, I would get injured and by the end of the summer, I would just be starting to get right. That’s how I would go and play overseas and again at the start of next summer I would get injured.”So, it was tough because I felt I was wasting so many years. But yeah, I again got back to my 100%. So, it was not like I felt I would never be able to bowl at the top level again. It was more of frustration for all the cricket that I was missing out on.”IPL 2020 will be Cummins’ second stint with the Knight Riders; he had been part of the set-up between 2014 and 2015 as well. He played only seven games across those two seasons, but would have a greater role to play this season as the most expensive overseas player in IPL history. He was sold for 15.5 crore (then approx. USD 2.1 million) in December 2019; Ben Stokes was the highest-paid overseas player before Cummins, having been picked up by Rising Pune Supergiant for INR 14.5 crore.Cummins is excited about bowling in different phases in T20 cricket. “The thing I love about T20 cricket is it’s ultra-attacking, or at the death, it’s ultra-defensive,” he said. “There is no middle ground. So, in T20 cricket, if you are an all-out bowler, you get to bowl any time of the match. That’s why I love the format.”

Rodgers could land his next Tom Rogic in Celtic swoop for 10-goal star

Celtic brought manager Brendan Rodgers back to Parkhead for a second spell in the dugout last summer after Ange Postecoglou moved down south.

The Northern Irish head coach enjoyed a respectable return to life in Glasgow with a domestic double to show for his efforts in the 2023/24 campaign.

His team secured the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup, with a 1-0 win over Rangers in the final last month, but could now look for the treble, or even more, next season.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers watches on.

The summer transfer window officially opened for business earlier this month and Rodgers could find his next Tom Rogic by signing a reported target from Scotland.

Celtic's interest in Premiership talent

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph recently claimed that the Hoops are one of a number of teams interested in snapping up Dundee ace Luke McCowan.

The reporter added that clubs from the MLS and the English Championship are also keeping tabs on him, which suggests that the Scottish giants would face competition for his signature.

He is in the last year of his contract with Dundee and they may have to cash in on him before the window slams shut to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year.

However, it remains to be seen how much the Premiership side would demand for the midfielder, or how much Celtic are prepared to offer for him.

If they do secure a deal for his services, though, then Rodgers could find his new version of Rogic for the Hoops during the 2024/25 campaign.

How Luke McCowan could be Tom Rogic 2.0

Like the Australian star, McCowan is a left-footed central midfielder who could come in and provide quality as a squad player with his ability to score and provide goals from the middle of the park.

Rogic did not play more than 22 league matches in a single season across his three-year tenure with Rodgers but did rack up 105 appearances in all competitions.

In those 105 matches, the left-footed magician chipped in with 24 goals and 20 assists and his best season in the Premiership under the Northern Irish boss was a return of seven goals and five assists in the 2016/17 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the 26-year-old maestro provided a fantastic attacking outlet for his team from a midfield position with 15 direct goal contributions, which could have been more if his teammates had made the most of the 'big chances' that he created, in 37 outings.

McCowan, who writer Kai Watson described as "tenacious", scored ten goals in all competitions for Dundee and seemingly has the quality to come in and provide a goal threat for the Hoops.

He could also be solid out of possession as the Scottish whiz made 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game in the Premiership, to go along with his goals and assists.

Celtic could sign "crazy" Idah alternative in biggest deal since Jota

The Hoops are reportedly interested in signing the talented young centre-forward.

Therefore, Rodgers could land his next Rogic, as a rotation midfielder who can come in and offer quality in attack when needed, by signing McCowan.
