As Chelsea face the increasingly real prospect of missing out on European football for a second consecutive season in the Premier League, Todd Boehly looks set to stick to his transfer plan focused on the future.
Chelsea transfer news
The Blues splashed the cash last summer to no avail, with Mauricio Pochettino's side rooted to mid-table and a world away from Champions League football. Their Carabao Cup final loss against a young Liverpool side was their latest moment to forget, as the Reds' academy products proved that money doesn't always come out on top at Wembley.
Yet, as the summer approaches, Boehly's tactic looks set to remain unchanged, as he sets his sights on the future once more. The American has already spent money to welcome the likes of Deivid Washington and Angelo Gabriel from Santos in Brazil, and now reports suggest that Chelsea have turned towards the South American market once again in an attempt to land a defensive gem.
The west London giants, of course, attempted to boost their backline last summer with the additions of Axel Disasi and Malo Gusto, but have since faced struggles to the ones they faced without the arrival of the duo to highlight the need for further additions. And that's where Rafael Venancio could step in for years to come.
Chelsea full-back Malo Gusto.
According to Globo Esporte, Chelsea are keen on signing Rafael Venancio from Corinthians alongside Premier League rivals Manchester United. The 17-year-old central defender reportedly has a release clause as low as €30m (£26m), handing the Blues a boost in their pursuit of his signature.
Chelsea now eyeing move for "incredible" Sterling upgrade they've scouted
He’s outscored the Chelsea winger so far this season.
ByTom Cunningham Mar 2, 2024
As Thiago Silva approaches the end of his current Chelsea contract this summer, it would feel fitting to see another Brazilian defender arrive at Stamford Bridge, especially if it is a young player in the form of Venancio. What's more, those at Stamford Bridge would no doubt like to get one over on Manchester United off the pitch in the process.
Venancio could become long-term Silva replacement
Replacing a player of Silva's calibre will be no easy task, particularly amid Chelsea's defensive struggles, but swapping the old for the new could be the best way forward this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino will certainly hope to see Venancio reach the level that Silva has if Chelsea are to secure his signature, having handed the veteran plenty of praise earlier this season. The manager said via Metro: "I think always we talk about the present. It’s important for him to keep fit. With his age, he’s doing fantastic. We are so happy with him. What is going to happen in the future, that’s for him."
As Boehly continues his transfer tactic by potentially welcoming another young Brazilian prospect, he will hope to finally reap the rewards for splashing the cash after watching another season to forget at Stamford Bridge.
Captain’s counterattack bags crucial bonus points in promotion tussle
ECB Reporters Network16-Sep-2019Durham 37 for 4 (Sanderson 3-20) trail Northamptonshire 217 (Rossington 82, Rushworth 5-68) by 180 runsAdam Rossington produced a murderous counterattack to revive Northamptonshire on the opening day of their crucial Specsavers County Championship promotion clash with Durham at Wantage Road.Asked to bat in bowling conditions that couldn’t have been better designed, Northants were listing at 150 for 8 after Chris Rushworth’s fourth five-wicket haul of the season before captain Rossington struck 60 in just 22 balls to rescue a batting point. He was last out for 82 but pushed his side to 217. Ben Sanderson then put Northants on top with three wickets as Durham slipped to 37 for 4 when bad curtailed the day.Rossington targeted the short leg-side boundary towards the Clark Road and shuffled across his stumps to slog sweep seven sixes – three of them in one over from Brydon Carse that went for 27 and four off Rushworth, including the biggest that brought up the batting point. It was the perfect time for a captain’s innings and gave Northants something to bowl at, which looked unlikely when Rushworth ran through them after lunch. Conditions were tailor-made for he and the Durham attack with a heavy grey cloud clinging over the ground and the floodlights the only reason play was possible. Ned Eckersley could have declined the toss from the changing room. But the visitors did not initially do justice to conditions and allowed Northants to reach 99 for 1 just after lunch. But Durham located a more consistent length and Rushworth’s first wicket began a severe slide of 7 for 51 in 21.1 overs. He found the breakthrough with a delivery that jagged back sharply off the seam to pluck out Alex Wakely’s off stump as he perfectly justifiably shouldered arms. Two balls later Rob Keogh edged an away-swinger to fall for a second-ball duck after a match-winning innings last week.Rushworth also nipped one through Ben Curran’s defences, who was rather caught on the crease in losing his off stump for a battling 36. After tea, Doug Bracewell was pinned by a nip-backer for 1 and the five-wicket haul was completed by one that bounced to take the shoulder of Brett Hutton’s bat to point.Ben Raine also went to 50 wickets in a season for the second time with his 3 for 57, having Rob Newton caught at slip for 26, Luke Procter caught behind first ball after tea for 8 and Gareth Berg bowled off his gloves as he tried to avoid another ball that bounced a little. But after Rossington’s brilliance gave his side a useful score, and momentum, the Northants bowlers made inroads much earlier then Durham managed.Sanderson got one to straighten on Cameron Steel who edged low to Hutton at third slip for 7 and lured Alex Lees, on 15, into flicking across a full delivery to provide Alex Wakely with a catch at first slip. A nip-backer then trapped Angus Robson lbw for 9.Gareth Berg also produced a big inswinger that won a leg before decision against Championship debutant BJ Watling. The New Zealander walked off for a third-ball duck as Northants ended the day much the stronger.
Despite a number of concerning injuries piling up at Pride Park, Derby County made it five matches unbeaten in League One last time out when beating Steve Evans' stern Stevenage side 1-0.
That victory was achieved without shining Rams star James Collins even being present, with Louie Sibley having to take over the goalscoring duties in place of the injury-stricken striker in the hard-fought win.
The third-tier promotion chasers have been boosted by the addition of former Newcastle United forward Dwight Gayle joining on a free transfer, but the Rams will regret letting one explosive attacker leave even more now when assessing their current lack of bodies up top.
Able to play down the wings or as a striker, this ex-Derby youngster is bettering Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's numbers whilst performing in the division above Warne's men.
Morgan Whittaker's time at Derby
Coming through the Derby academy to make his first-team debut with the Rams back in 2019, Morgan Whittaker would never really kick on in the senior set-up in Derbyshire unfortunately.
It would end up being a subdued end for Whittaker at the now League One club, after scoring a staggering 18 goals in just one season for the Derby U18's before making the jump up to the men's team.
The current Plymouth Argyle star only managed to help himself to one goal and one assist from 32 appearances when doing so, leaving the Rams after just two seasons playing in the first-team fold.
The Rams should have persisted, with hindsight on their side, to keep Whittaker around at Pride Park for longer – the "flamboyant" ex-Derby attacker, as he was once described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, exploding into life ever since waving goodbye to the East Midlands outfit.
Morgan Whittaker's statistics since leaving Derby
Selling their former homegrown product for £700k now feels like a major blunder, considering the beast Whittaker has been transformed into playing for Plymouth this season.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.
Failing to ever really settle at Swansea City in the direct aftermath of leaving the Rams, Whittaker has found a place to call his own and to skilfully strut his stuff on a regular basis in Devon.
This campaign alone for Ian Foster's Pilgrims, the silky 6 foot 2 attacker has managed a combined 26 goals and assists in all competitions with one of those strikes coming recently against his former Welsh employers.
In contrast, Mendez-Laing for Derby has one less contribution next to his name at 25. But, at 31 years of age, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for the former Wolverhampton Wanderers winger to start deteriorating.
Whereas, Whittaker – who is just 23 years of age on the other hand – has plenty more years left in the tank compared to Mendez-Laing and could well get even better over time.
Now coming in at a boosted transfer worth in the region of €6.3m (£5.3m) according to Football Transfers, Derby really did drop a clanger getting rid of Whittaker when they did.
The Argyle winger will just aim to continue impressing at Home Park with a view to a major move away from Devon soon, Serie A giants Lazio notable admirers of the one-time Derby prospect.
Whereas, Derby will press on with what they have at their disposal currently with hopes that Dwight Gayle can fire in crucial goals playing alongside Mendez-Laing to win promotion up to the Championship.
Jurgen Klopp shocked the world of football when he announced that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season after almost a decade in charge at Anfield. The German has done it all on Merseyside and leaves as the Reds' most successful manager in their Premier League history.
But who is Jurgen Klopp? How many trophies has he won? And could he return to management next season? We at Football FanCast have gathered everything you need to know about the Reds boss is right here.
Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
With Liverpool top of the Premier League and still in all three cup competitions, you'd be forgiven for thinking that when Klopp revealed that he had an announcement, it would be centred around a possible contract extension. That proved anything but the case, however, as he instead revealed his forthcoming exit.
Speaking to Liverpool's official media channels, Klopp detailed the reason behind his decision: "It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again."
Jurgen Klopp news & rumours
Julian Nagelsmann managing Bayern Munich
Whilst Klopp was quick to rule out a return to management, saying "if you ask me, ‘Will you ever work as a manager again?’ I would say now no," the rumours have still arrived.
Julian Nagelsmann's contract with the German national team is up after this summer's Euros, creating the need for another candidate to step into the hot seat. And given that Klopp has been linked with the Germany position before, only to turn it down due to his Liverpool commitments, they could return with another attempt – this time without the obstacle of his Anfield role.
Nagelsmann, of course, has been a name mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Klopp at Liverpool in what would be a convenient swap for all parties. That said, as of right now, it is Reds legend and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso who reportedly tops FSG's shortlist, having already made contact.
Jurgen Klopp's salary and net worth
Jurgen Klopp with John Henry.
FSG got a return on their investment throughout Klopp's time at the club, winning every major honour available. Klopp's wages reportedly sit at a whopping £15m a year, which is ironically only second to Manchester City's Pep Guardiola in what will feel all too frustratingly familiar for the 56-year-old.
Klopp's net worth, meanwhile, has unsurprisingly gone up and up since arriving at Anfield – and reportedly now stands at around £39m, according to Essentially Sports.
Jurgen Klopp's net spend
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.
The fact that Liverpool have kept up with Manchester City throughout Klopp's tenure speaks volumes about the impact that the Anfield legend has had on the club. That is then made even more impressive by Liverpool's net spend compared to the rest of the Premier League's 'big six' since Klopp's arrival in 2015.

Astonishingly, it is Manchester United who top the list, with a net spend of over double Liverpool's in the last nine years. Compare silverware during that time, and it says a lot about just how poorly the Red Devils have spent their money compared to Klopp at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp's age and height
Now 56 years old, it's no surprise that Klopp doesn't have the energy that he once did to coach his 'heavy metal' football. Although it seems unlikely that we'll see the German in a dugout anytime soon, he could yet make his return to management and follow in the footsteps of the likes of Arsene Wenger, who left Arsenal at 68 years old.
Standing at 6 foot 3, the former Dortmund man could have perhaps made for an emergency centre-back option amid Liverpool's infamous shortage in the 2020/21 campaign, which saw the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho form makeshift partnerships at times.
Jurgen Klopp's wife
Ulla Klopp at Liverpool.
An underrated member of Klopp's backroom team is, of course, his wife – Ulla Sandrock. Liverpool fans reportedly have her to thank for keeping hold of their legendary boss for what could prove to be a historic season. According to Jonathan Northcroft of The Times, Klopp came close to quitting midway through last season, before being convinced by his wife to stay put.
Back at the summit, the Liverpool boss may well be glad to have listened ahead of what could be the perfect ending.
Jurgen Klopp's teeth
Jurgen Klopp
Everyone is used to seeing Jurgen Klopp's pearly whites by now, but that's not how it has always been.
The German did indeed have his teeth fixed and, reportedly, veneers implanted.
Interestingly, it was Roberto Firmino who inspired Klopp to get them done, as the Liverpool boss went to Dr Robbie Hughes of Dental Excellence, who also did the Brazilian's.
He stated: "Working with Jurgen Klopp came about because he saw Roberto's new teeth and decided he wanted to do something. When Jurgen came to see us, he basically just said he liked Roberto's teeth, that he wouldn't want to go quite as white, but he liked his teeth."
Although, Klopp came out and denied this claim and stated that he did not want to copy Firmino but was forced to have them fixed after an initial medical problem that required antibiotics.
Clubs Jurgen Klopp played for
Jurgen Klopp for Liverpool.
Klopp the manager will go down in history, but Klopp the player will likely go down as something to forget. Not exactly famous for his technical ability on the pitch, the Liverpool legend played for Tus Ergenzingen, Eintracht Frankfurt II, Vik. Sindlingen, Rot-Weiss Frankfurt and most famously Mainz 05, who he would go on to manage. He does, at least, have one famous moment to look back on in his playing career:
Though, it must be said, Klopp will still be remembered for the heavy metal football that he orchestrated rather than the one that he played as a right-back.
Clubs managed by Jurgen Klopp

Those who will best remember both Klopp's managerial ability and his heartfelt connection with the people are the fans of Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool – the three clubs that he has taken charge of in his career. Starting at Mainz, the 56-year-old helped his former club to their first-ever Bundesliga promotion back in the 2004/05 campaign.
From there, Klopp took his success to Dortmund, where he cemented himself among some of the best managers in the world, beating Bayern Munich to the title not once but twice in the Bundesliga, before stepping into the Liverpool dugout with even greater success.
Honours won by Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp lifts the Champions League trophy.
It could be easy to say that Klopp should have won more, given his four Champions League finals and close title race. But the fact is, he has won every major honour that there is to win during his career.

Mohammad Nabi’s Mis Ainak Knights chased down 155 with a ball to spare to defeat Rashid Khan’s Band-e-Amir Dragons in the Shpageeza T20 League final in Kabul. Knights ensured Rashid went wicketless in his four overs, and although Mujeeb Ur Rahman plucked two wickets, they went after the other bowlers to lift the title after taking the chase down to the penultimate ball.Knights needed 21 off the last three overs and their captain Nabi struck back-to-back fours off seamer Batin Shah to tilt the scales. But Batin hit back as Nabi holed out off the next ball for 30 off 21, but Sharafuddin Ashraf, the new man in, found the boundary off his first ball. Then, with Knights needing a mere five runs off 12 balls, Mujeeb got rid of Ihsanullah, and Shafiqullah Ghafari was run out for a duck, leaving them needing four off the final over. Tariq Stanikzai, too, was run out for a duck, but Ashraf and Fazal Niazai ushered Knights home in a fairly tense finish. It was 17-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz who had set the tone for the chase with 36 off 25 balls in a 71-run opening partnership with Noor Ali Zadran (42). No. 3 Ihsanullah and Nabi took charge of the innings after the openers fell, but a late-middle-order wobble tightened the chase. From 142 for 2, Knights slid to 152 for 6, but their lower order eventually bailed them out.Having been sent in earlier in the day, Dragons lost their openers Rashid and Javed Ahmadi in the Powerplay, but middle-order contributions from Imran Janat, Afsar Zazai and Shawkat Zaman gave their innings direction; Janat top-scored with 32 off 26 balls, including three fours and a six. Dragons were 109 for 4 in 15 overs, but they took 45 off the last five of their innings to end with 154 for 7. It would not be enough against Nabi’s men.Nabi had played his part with the ball as well, claiming 1 for 34 in his four overs, while seamer Naveen-ul-Haq was the pick of the Knights bowlers with 3 for 41.Knights’ Noor Ali Zadran was the top-scorer in the league with 354 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of nearly 135, while Dragons’ Nijat Masood ended as the top wicket-taker with 11 scalps, despite playing only six games.
Manchester United are looking to bring in Dan Ashworth from Newcastle United, but a twist has now emerged regarding the situation, according to a new update.
Man Utd want Dan Ashworth
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that he sees Ashworth as an ideal man to hire as United's new sporting director, as he changes the way the club go about their recruitment, with terms already agreed between the pair last week.
The Englishman has worked wonders at Newcastle, forging a strong relationship with Eddie Howe and identifying top-quality signings, so he could play a pivotal role in looking to help the Red Devils return to the top of English football.
Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Ashworth has confirmed his desire to leave the Magpies, with United's Premier League rivals placing him on gardening leave, and it is believed that £20m will have to be paid to Newcastle if they want to bring him in straight away.
If not, they will have to wait two years before he can start work at Old Trafford, due to his contract and a significant update has dropped regarding United's pursuit of him, having made an approach.
Dan Ashworth to Man Utd twist
According to Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke, Manchester United are not willing to pay £20m in compensation to bring in Ashworth, suggesting his move to Old Trafford could have to wait.
Dan Ashworth.
"Man United will not pay £20million to land Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth, sources have told Football Insider. Football Insider revealed last week (14 February) that Newcastle chief Ashworth agreed terms on a move to United and informed the Magpies of his intention to leave.
"Negotiations are now ongoing between the two clubs as the Magpies look to cash in on Ashworth. He is under contract in the north east until June 2026 and it is believed the Tyneside club will initially ask for as much as £20million. Man United have baulked at that initial price tag and talks will continue."
This is clearly a frustrating update for United supporters to hear, considering what a strong appointment Ashworth could be moving forward, but it is no great surprise to see Newcastle holding firm, looking to get as much money as possible in the deal.
Ultimately, it looks as though a compromise is going to have to be reached between the two clubs, landing at a figure they both agree on, or the 52-year-old may not be a Red Devils employee until 2026.
The fact that United have made an official approach is exciting, however, and having not had a proper sporting director in place for so long, unlike rivals such as Manchester City and Liverpool, fans will hope that this is another major step in the right direction, following some poor years at Old Trafford.

There is still lots of work to be done, though, and Ashworth won't solve all the issues on his own, but there is a feeling of positivity growing at the club, with Ratcliffe gaining more power and results improving on the pitch.

Newcastle United have found out the hard way this season when it comes to the quality needed to compete on every front. The Magpies' summer recruitment has failed to pay dividends and now they're set to go again in the hope of making up for lost time, with one man already on the shortlist.
Newcastle transfer news
Before anything, PIF will need to find a replacement for sporting director Dan Ashworth, who has been placed on gardening leave amid links with a move to Manchester United.
Newcastle have now held talks over two new surprise St James’ Park deals
The duo have struggled for minutes this season.
ByTom Cunningham Mar 8, 2024
Darren Eales, Newcastle United CEO, confirmed the news, telling the club's official website: "We are naturally disappointed that Dan has chosen to leave, however our exciting journey doesn't stop and the process to recruit a new sporting director will begin immediately. We thank Dan for his efforts at Newcastle United and we wish him and his family well for the future."
Whoever takes up the role next will be tasked with taking those at St James' Park back to the heights of last season, when they finished inside the Premier League's top four and qualified for the Champions League. To do that, the Magpies would be wise to turn to players who have experienced that top level, including one summer target.
According to Dean Jones, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Aaron Ramsdale, who has fallen out of favour at Arsenal this season and needs a move elsewhere if he is to gain crucial minutes.
cody-gakpo-aaron-ramsdale-liverpool-opinion
"Brilliant" Ramsdale would face similar problems at Newcastle
At a crossroads in his career, Ramsdale must get his next move right and it must result in a consistent starting place. And that should rule Newcastle out. The England international has already lost his place at Arsenal to David Raya and a move to St James' Park would hand him a similar obstacle in displacing Nick Pope.
Pope, currently out injured, is Eddie Howe's clear number one, which is unlikely to change with the arrival of Ramsdale.

It remains to be seen just how much of a fight Arsenal will put up to keep Ramsdale too, with Mikel Arteta singing his praises earlier this season, saying via Arsenal Insider: “He’s fully prepared. He’s training really well every day. He’s desperate to play, like rest of the boys that haven’t had many opportunities.
“Saturday is a great day for him. It’s a joy to have 2 top goalkeepers in the team. He’s been brilliant, really supportive. Pushing every day in training, like I expected.”
