    TELL ME MORE

Italy looked uninspiring, dull and flat against a tame Turkey side on Tuesday evening at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara in Bologna. The reigning European champions lacked creativity and were slow off the blocks as the visitors looked content to sit back and wait for the occasional counter. Chances came at a premium and both teams created very little in attack until the final minute of first-half stoppage time.

Baris Yilmaz was allowed a free header by Italy's defence but the striker could not keep his attempt on target. Seconds later, the Azzurri got their first significant chance of the game when Bryan Cristante rose highest to get his head to a Lorenzo Pellegrini corner but his effort crashed against the woodwork.

Luciano Spalletti made two changes at half-time as he introduced Mattia Zaccagni and Andrea Cambiaso to replace Riccardo Orsolini and Federico Chiesa. Arsenal star, Jorginho, who put in a decent shift at midfield, was hooked just after the hour mark as Nicolo Fagioli made his way onto the pitch. Things started to open up in the final 10 minutes, as both sides decided to throw caution to the wind, but a lack of clinical finishing did not help their cause.

    THE MVP

Bryan Cristante was a bright spot in Italy's midfield. The 29-year-old defensive midfielder kept the midfield ticking along with Jorginho and, after the Gunners star was taken off, he further got the opportunity to express himself in the centre of the park. The Roma star could have got on the score sheet as well with some little luck but was denied by the post.

    THE BIG LOSER

Luciano Spalletti will be a concerned manager after the insipid showing against Turkey. Despite enjoying the bulk of the possession, they had very few ideas about what to do going forwards and Turkey's defence was hardly tested. Expectations may not be high heading to Germany and this lacklustre performance will do little to change perceptions.

Man Utd lead £43m transfer race for "incredible" Giorgio Scalvini – report

For Manchester United, the biggest signing of the 2023 summer transfer window – going by the fee at least – was Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker cost United £72m, one of the top ten most expensive outlays in their history and the second-biggest of the Erik ten Hag era after the £82m deal for Antony a year earlier.

Hojlund has made a slow start for the Red Devils, scoring just one goal in his first 15 Premier League appearances (a late winner against Aston Villa last month), but he fared better in Europe, where he bagged five in six before United's early Champions League exit. Still, time is on the 20-year-old's side, and the early teething problems haven't put the club off knocking on Atalanta's door again over another young talent.

Man Utd ahead of Bayern and PSG for Scalvini

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, United are leading the race to sign Giorgio Scalvini from La Dea. Ten Hag's side have been watching him for "several months", as have Bayern Munich, while PSG have also shortlisted him as one of three possible centre-back signings. The competition is fierce, then, but United is "ahead" as it stands.

Atalanta are coming under "more and more pressure" to sell the defender and accept that "it will be difficult" to keep hold of Scalvini, but that doesn't mean it will be "easy" to get him out of Bergamo during the January transfer window. They're already set out their demands of around £43m.

Scalvini is "destined for greatness"

20-year-old Scalvini has been with Atalanta since 2015, when he first joined from Brescia, and he's already made 78 senior appearances for his club, including 23 this season. Despite his youth, he's a key player for Gian Piero Gasperini, who's started him in 16 of his side's 19 Serie A matches so far.

Capped seven times by Italy too, he ranks fifth in the league for blocks (30), second for interceptions (35) and eighth for aerial duels won (50), which highlights his astute positioning and strong athletic attributes. Crucially, he's gifted on the ball too, sitting second in the division for take-on success (81.8%). That suggests he'll be able to cope well under a high press from Premier League forwards.

Scalvini finished in the top ten in the voting for the 2023 Golden Boy award, given to the best under-21 player in Europe. Only two defenders – Benfica's Antonio Silva and Barcelona's Alejandro Balde – finished ahead of him, and he was also named the best young Italian player at the ceremony.

As such, Serie A podcaster and football writer Danny Corcoran is certainly justified in calling him an "incredible defender", and you can see why Gasperini has declared that "he's destined for greatness". £43m isn't cheap, of course, but it's a fee that Scalvini could easily pay back, and the beauty of this signing is that it wouldn't just be a long-term move – he's shown in Serie A this season that he's ready to thrive at the highest level.

"I’m told" – Sky Sports reporter shares news on Rangers move for Shankland

Rangers' focus throughout the January transfer window has been attacking reinforcements as they look to close the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership. Even after Philippe Clement welcomed Fabio Silva on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Hearts forward Lawrence Shankland has remained in the Gers' sights. And now, an update has been provided on their pursuit of the forward.

Rangers transfer news – Lawrence Shankland

Shankland has attracted plenty of interest this month, with reports suggesting that Everton, Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, Burnley, Celtic and of course, Rangers are all eyeing moves to sign the Hearts captain. Even as Rangers' attention reportedly turned the way of Michy Batshuayi, links with Shankland remained at the forefront, leading to the latest update from Sky Sports reporter Mark Benstead.

Rangers now keen to sign in-demand forward for Philippe Clement

The Gers are still searching for attacking reinforcements…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 18, 2024

According to Benstead on Wednesday, relayed by Ibrox News, a deal for Rangers to sign Shankland would not be insurmountable and could be done straightforwardly, but the Gers may clear some players off their wage bill first.

"Rangers still want to bring in a forward player and there is interest in Lawrence Shankland of Hearts.

"I’m told that the figures involved if that was to happen would not be insurmountable – it could be done straightforwardly. But they will perhaps have to move some bodies off the wage bill first and will need a common consensus that he is the right player to go for.

"There’s a lot of interest within Rangers, but also some doubting voices who think they should go for someone else. They also need to be mindful of the fact that Hearts will need to bring in a replacement, so they can’t drag their heels in too much.”

With that said, the Scottish Premiership star is still one to keep an eye on, as Rangers make what could prove to be a vital transfer decision in the coming weeks.

"Strong" Shankland can put an end to Rangers' striker woes

Since Clement arrived, there's no doubting the fact that Rangers have been a much-improved side, but they arguably still lack a standout star to lead the line. Summer arrival Sam Lammers failed to make his mark and now finds himself out on loan at FC Utrecht. Meanwhile, Kemar Roofe's stats prove how much he's struggled, with just two goals to his name. Cyriel Dessers' nine goals in all competitions have been impressive, yet when compared, it is Shankland who stands out.

Shankland's goals tally currently sits at 18 in all competitions, which is more than Roofe and Dessers have managed combined. It's no surprise that those goals have come with plenty of praise too, including from St Johnstone boss Craig Levein.

“I really like Shankland, you know. You look at him and say he’s not particularly quick, and at international level that’s quite an important part to be athletic.

“But he’s a goalscorer isn’t he. You put that ball in the penalty box, he uses his body so well and he’s strong. You put it in there, you've always got a chance of scoring a goal.”

Reliable reporter shares Dwight Gayle to Derby County transfer update

After a busy January transfer window, which saw Corey Blackett-Taylor and Ebou Adams arrive, it seemed as though Derby County could go on and welcome one more fresh face for Paul Warne even after deadline day. A fresh twist has now emerged, however.

Derby transfer news

Sat second in League One and just four points adrift of leaders Portsmouth with a game in hand, the January transfer window could prove to be the difference-maker for Derby come the end of the campaign. The Rams will be looking to make the most of Max Bird whilst they've still got him too, having seen the midfielder complete a permanent move to Bristol City late in the window, before re-joining Warne's side on loan.

Speaking about the deal, Warne said via The Derby Telegraph: "It was quite early on really. Max has been courted by a few clubs over the years. A year or two ago, a couple of clubs had offered big money for him. He didn't go and I always think it's difficult when you are a youth team player and come through the club, you always get looked upon differently by the fans, the staff and by everyone.

"You don't want to become part of the furniture, and I do feel that some players do that. For example, at my previous club, I had Ben Wiles and Jerry Yates. Both were amazing players but got to the stage where they thought they needed to go somewhere else and show their worth."

Perhaps looking to enjoy some good news on the transfer front, reports linked Derby with a move for Dwight Gayle, who was recently released from Stoke City and was seemingly spotted on his way to Pride Park. However, according to Leigh Curtis of The Derby Telegraph, Derby are not pursuing a deal for Gayle as things stand.

"Quick" Gayle would be worth the gamble

As Derby look to gain an edge in the race to leapfrog Portsmouth and win the League One title, Gayle would have been worth a punt, before the reports were rubbished by Curtis. The forward has plenty of experience, whether that be in the Championship or the Premier League, and was once at the centre of Alan Pardew's praise.

The former Crystal Palace boss said via FourFourTwo: "He [Gayle] seems a very uncomplicated player to me. He's very straightforward in his work. He's quick, good in the air and has two feet… blimey, there's not much more you could want is there really? He's got a good attitude, all he needs is experience and to grow in his confidence."

Gayle's Championship numbers speak for themself, but it seems as though Derby have opted out of pursuing the forward, who remains a free agent.

Avishka Fernando will be one of the future stars – Dimuth Karunaratne

Going into their final round-robin match, Sri Lanka may be out of semi-final contention, and yet, there is a strong argument they have surpassed expectations at this World Cup. Ranked ninth in ODIs ahead of the tournament, they have won half the matches they’ve played so far, beating England, West Indies and Aghanistan, while losing to New Zealand, Australia and South Africa (their games against Bangladesh and Pakistan were both rained out).Although India are firm favourites on Saturday, one more Sri Lanka win will secure them a mid-table position – fifth or sixth – something even optimistic Sri Lanka fans might have believed was beyond this team. And while Lasith Malinga has been the team’s best player, the batting of Avishka Fernando in particular has been a revelation.ALSO READ: Last chance for India’s middle order to get it right ahead of the knockoutsMost expected Sri Lanka’s World Cup to be disastrous. And although their ODI cricket remains poor, it seems in a better place than it did when they arrived in England.”We’ve had a few positives out of this World Cup, with the openers and No. 3 having done well for us,” Dimuth Karunaratne said. “Avishka Fernando is playing really well. He only got three games, but he showed what he can do – he can produce runs for Sri Lanka. He’s one of the future stars.”While 21-year-old Fernando has been a particular cause for excitement, having hit Sri Lanka’s first ODI hundred since January, and made 183 runs at a strike-rate of 107 through the course of his three innings, Sri Lanka have also had solidity at the very top of the order. Karunaratne and Kusal Perera have produced three opening partnershps worth at least 90.Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera gave Sri Lanka a strong start•Getty Images

The strength of performances are increasingly divorced from selection calls in Sri Lanka, but following years of rapid turnover in the opening positions, Sri Lanka perhaps have hope that the Karunaratne-Kusal Perera partnership can provide stability well beyond the World Cup.”Kusal and I have different styles,” Karunaratne said. “What the team expects from me is different – everyone expects me to bat through the innings. Kusal has been given the freedom to play his game. He can play his shots since he knows that I will play the anchor role from one end. If I get out, it gets difficult for him to play with freedom, so what I look to do is to rotate the strike and let him take on the bowling. We have a good understanding and I don’t race to catch up with his score. I have my limitations and I try to stick to that. We also have a good understanding running between the wickets. We have played lot of A team cricket together.”Sri Lanka have lost seven of the nine ODIs they have played against India in the last two years, but they had won their most recent match against them in England.. Chasing 322 at the Oval during the 2017 Champions Trophy, Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews struck fifties as Sri Lanka achieved the target with seven wickets in hand. Karunaratne hoped memories of that win would spread vibes within his team.”India are a top team, and you can’t afford to make mistakes against a side like that. But we have beaten them in England in the Champions Trophy, and some of those players who did that are in this squad as well. I hope we can take inspiration from that win and play well.”

India's shaky middle order in focus against teetering West Indies

West Indies will be without the injured Andre Russell in their must-win game against the new No.1 ODI side

Kartik: India’s middle order not a cause of concern

Big PictureThirty six years after India sprung a surprise on West Indies in final, the two sides meet again with plenty on the line at Old Trafford. Carlos Brathwaite fell inches short on Saturday, but it’s not quite the end of the road for West Indies, who have just won one of their six matches and are placed just above South Africa and Afghanistan, who are both out of contention for the semi-finals.England’s back-to-back defeats come as soothing news to West Indies, who can still sneak into the knockouts, provided they win their last three league matches and the stars align for them. Should Jason Holder’s men lose tomorrow, though, their dream will be over and India will take a big step closer to the semi-finals.West Indies will have to do without Andre Russell whose utterly wonky knees have given up. There’s also an injury cloud over Evin Lewis, who had hurt his hamstring in the field against New Zealand and later did not open the batting. Instead, he batted at No. 8 and bagged a three-ball duck.Chris Gayle and Shai Hope have blown hot and cold, compounding West Indies’ top-order troubles. They are the only side in the tournament without a fifty opening stand and they have the worst average for the opening partnership (11.2). Sunil Ambris, who has been drafted in as Russell’s replacement, could help remedy this and bring some attacking enterprise at the top while Brathwaite seamlessly fits in as a like-for-like replacement for Russell.Sheldon Cottrell: taking wickets and having fun•Getty ImagesWest Indies’ new-ball bowlers ditched the bang-it-in plan and hit much fuller lengths on Saturday, and Sheldon Cottrell was immediately rewarded with a double-wicket first over. His left-arm angle coupled with an awkward round-arm action could pose a threat to India’s batting line-up that still has some cracks in the middle order. Vijay Shankar is still feeling his way into the middle order, and he had his first – and only crack – at No. 4 on Saturday. Kedar Jadhav made a scrappy fifty, but he could not find a gear high enough to hurt Afghanistan. That brings us to MS Dhoni. As is his wont, he simply blocked the spinners and set up for the late burst. However, it never came and Dhoni fell in the most un-Dhoni fashion: jumping out to slog Rashid Khan against the break in his last over and getting stumped.Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s injury has also messed with India’s balance. Mohammed Shami bowled a fiery first spell and later closed out the game against Afghanistan with a hat-trick, but his inclusion has lengthened India’s tail. Against West Indies whose batting drips with power and depth, India could consider recalling Ravindra Jadeja in place of one of the wristspinners.ALSO READ: Aakash Chopra on what India need to do against West Indies’ key playersForm guideIndia: WWWWL (Last five completed matches, most recent first)

Nicholas Pooran joins Yorkshire for Vitality T20 Blast

Pooran will be available for five matches after the World Cup

Nicholas Pooran seals the win with a six•Getty Images

Nicholas Pooran will seek to banish memories of West Indies’ unproductive World Cup by staying on in England to play five matches for Yorkshire in the Vitality T20 Blast.Pooran was one of several rookie players that West Indies’ captain Jason Holder had in mind when he called for them to become the heart and the soul of the team. That is what Yorkshire have in mind by calling up the Trinidadian with a view to improving a mediocre T20 record. One aspect of the World Cup that has at least worked in Pooran’s favour is that he has reached the requisite number of international appearances (15 over the preceding two years) during the West Indies’ campaign to qualify for a visa as an overseas player in the tournament. He has not had a bad World Cup, getting starts in four of his five innings, but his 63 against England at the Ageas Bowl is his only half-century for a West Indies side that is on the brink of elimination.”It is hard work playing for different teams and still trying to be as professional as you can be,” Pooran said. “You’ve just got to adapt and learn about different people’s cultures and just try to be the best I can be for the team. It will be a new and exciting experience for me.Pooran, who made his ODI debut in Bridgetown against England in February this year, will return to the West Indies setup in time for their home T20I series against India, which begins on August 3 in Florida. He has quickly established himself as one of the most explosive batsmen in limited-overs cricket with a strike rate of 140 in his 11 T20 internationals. He also top scored in the fledgling T10 competition in the UAE before Christmas, scoring 324 runs in nine matches for Champions Northern Warriors, including 33 sixes.Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket, said: “Nicholas is an excellent young talent, although he is only available for a short period, we hope it will give us early impetus in the competition.”Johnny Tattersall has been incredibly effective as a batter in limited-overs cricket, but he has played every game this season. He has now got three back-to-back Championship fixtures and only a couple of days between the end of the Somerset match and the start of the T20s.”We’re mindful of the workload of Tatts and we have been leaving things open to see how he was going. There are other areas we feel we need for the T20s, so Nicholas has been on the radar for some time. At some point we needed to make a decision on which path to take, so we decided to go for him, albeit for a short five-game spell.”
