Man City have struck gold on special star who’s worth more than Bellingham

With four minutes left to play, it looked as though Manchester City were about to seal a famous victory.

This side, led by the great Pep Guardiola, have achieved all there is to achieve but defeating Real Madrid over two legs no less, would have been one of their best accomplishments to date.

However, the Champions League is Madrid’s baby. No side has won it more times. Simply, they are inevitable.

City ended up feeling the full force of that on Tuesday evening. An Erling Haaland brace had put the Citizens 2-1 up either side of a Kylian Mbappe goal but there would be no celebrations for Guardiola and Co come full time.

The Etihad side have been so staunch in recent years and would never have blown such a precious lead in years gone by. Though, this is not any ordinary Guardiola team. For the first time in his managerial career, he is running out of answers.

Former City employee Brahim Diaz made it 2-2 in the 86th minute and what happened afterwards all felt rather inevitable.

City made a crucial mistake. Mateo Kovacic’s errant back pass found Vini Jr – the man who City fans gleefully took the Micky out of pre-game – who then chipped Ederson. Jude Bellingham beat England colleague John Stones to a foot race and fired into an empty net.

The Etihad was stunned. The visitors couldn’t believe their luck. That man Jude was on hand to score yet another huge goal. He is the man for the big occasion.

Jude Bellingham’s heroic performance against Manchester City

Cast your mind back to the European Championships. England are on the verge of a last-16 exit at the hands of Slovakia until Bellingham comes along with his swagger and superiority.

Marc Guehi’s flick-on from a throw-in found the former Borussia Dortmund man who acrobatically fired past the ‘keeper. England sent the game to extra time. They later won.

Let us also cast our minds back to Madrid’s LaLiga clash with Valencia earlier this term. Los Blancos were on the verge of losing until that man Jude won the game in the dying embers.

If you need a late goal, he’s certainly your man. Bellingham is, of course, no stranger to English shores and gave British audiences a timely reminder of his mesmeric capabilities this week.

His goal, although simple, was classic Bellingham, advancing beyond the last line and breaking into the penalty area. His display, though, was more than just that precious strike.

His numbers were fantastic, completing all three of his dribbles, all three of his long balls and registering two key passes. Also making three tackles and registering three shots, this was a cracking all-round display.

Perhaps Madrid’s main man last term, he is somewhat in the shadow of Mbappe now but he won’t care one bit should Carlo Ancelotti’s men retain their continental crown.

Still, the 21-year-old isn’t valued quite as highly as one Manchester City star.

Manchester City’s best player against Madrid

This was a night for the world’s best players. Bellingham scored, as did Mbappe. Vini Jr played a vital role in the game-clinching moment and his Ballon d’Or rival and ultimately the winner of the award, Rodri, was back in the stands.

But while the Spaniard was forced to sit and admire proceedings, Haaland did not.

The Norwegian has scored 27 goals in 34 games this term and yet it still feels like he’s underwhelmed. That feels like a staggering thing to say but considering City’s form, it’s hardly a surprise he’s gone under the radar.

Yet, after a rough few weeks, including that 5-1 defeat to Arsenal where he scored but registered just ten touches and completed two passes, he was far more involved on this occasion.

It was the former Dortmund powerhouse who opened the scoring, latching onto Josko Gvardiol’s smart knockdown in the penalty area before firing past Thibaut Courtois on his return to England.

His second was a penalty and rather more straightforward but it was a reminder that he is still one of the greatest players in our game and should be hailed as such. To win a Ballon d’Or, the award commands Haaland to develop a more well-rounded style but there is no denying that City haven’t struck gold by signing him.

Acquired in the summer of 2022, the 24-year-old was signed for £51.2m. Such has been his devastating form since that he’s now worth a staggering £166m according to Transfermarkt.

To put those numbers into context, it makes him not only the most valuable player in the Premier League but also in Europe’s top five leagues, even ahead of Bellingham.

In contrast, the young England international is worth £150m according to the same source which caps off a wonderful rise to stardom.

Erling Haaland in action for Manchester City

Bellingham’s last-gasp goal may have stolen the show on Tuesday night and for all of his confidence and pizazz, it is still the goalscoring cyborg of Haaland that reigns supreme for market value.

£32k-p/w Burnley star will now miss Sheffield Wednesday after int’l injury

Looking to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games, Burnley will have to do so without one star player against Sheffield Wednesday following a frustrating injury blow.

Burnley injury news

Following a difficult summer which started with Vincent Kompany’s exit and ended with departures such as Wilson Odobert, Sander Berge and Dara O’Shea, Burnley have done well to firmly remain in promotion contention.

scott-parker-championship-leeds-united-manager-news

The Clarets, now with Scott Parker at the helm, were on an unbeaten run of six games in all competitions prior to the international break and sit just one point shy of the automatic promotion places as a result. The task will now be to continue that run and hope that it inevitably leads to a place back in the Premier League at the first time of asking ahead of the likes of Sheffield United and Sunderland.

If they are to impress once again, however, then Parker’s side will have to do so without one of their attacking stars up against Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls will be looking to cause an upset and will no doubt be buoyed by such an absence.

As confirmed by Parker, Lyle Foster is set to miss Burnley’s trip to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday after the forward suffered an injury against Congo-Brazzaville whilst on international duty with South Africa.

Parker told reporters, as relayed by The Star: “We don’t know the full extent at the moment, He came back, we got him back early. He came back into the country yesterday and he’s got an appointment this afternoon to really get a clear idea of it.

“I wouldn’t want to go into too much detail or comment too much, we will wait and see what the experts say and hopefully by the back end of the week or early next week the picture will be a little bit clearer in terms of understanding it. I think it’s fair to say we rule him out of this weekend.”

More frustration for "strong" Foster

After admirably battling back from mental health struggles in the last campaign, Foster is once again one of the main men at Turf Moore, having started eight of Burnley’s nine Championship games so far this season. But the goals are still yet to arrive for the forward, with just one in nine appearances in all competitions so far this season.

After scoring for South Africa in the international break, there’s no doubt that £32,000-a-week Foster would have been hoping to turn his fortunes around in front of goal for Burnley upon his return before an injury blow dealt the 24-year-old more frustration.

Burnley's Lyle Foster represents South Africa.

Dubbed “very strong” and “very fast” by Cesc Fabregas, Foster will now set his sights on a return from the sidelines and a return to his best form in front of goal as soon as possible to hand Burnley the ultimate promotion boost.

Man Utd could make Rashford world-class again by signing "elite" £34m star

One of the areas where Manchester United need to add to the depth of their squad this summer is at centre-forward. Rasmus Hojlund is currently the only number nine at Old Trafford, and, despite an impressive debut season for the 21-year-old, has a big burden on his shoulders as United’s chief striker at such a young age.

During his first campaign as a Red Devil, United’s number 11 scored 16 goals and registered two assists in 43 games. That included ten strikes in 30 games in the Premier League, at an average of a goal every three games, and an impressive run of eight goals in seven games in the Premier League between December 2023 and February 2024.

In the Champions League, Hojlund performed well even though United crashed out at the group stages. He netted five times and was outscored by just five players, which is impressive given he was the only player to score five or more goals to get eliminated at the group stages.

The Dane’s first campaign at United was impressive and has given him something to build on next season. However, United still need a number nine this summer and have been linked with one player who could take some of Hojlund’s burden.

Man Utd target Serie A striker

The player in question here is Bologna and Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee. The former Bayern Munich player had an impressive season under Thiago Motta last term and has been linked with a move away from the club during the summer window.

According to a report from Sky in Italy via Sky Sports, the Red Devils are thought to be “keeping a close eye on developments” regarding Zirkzee’s future in Northern Italy, and he is thought to be “among a number of attacking options” that United are looking at.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

However, Erik ten Hag’s side are not believed to be the only club interested in signing the 23-year-old. United’s Premier League rivals Arsenal are also thought to be looking at the Dutchman, but Italian giants AC Milan lead the way. The Rossoneri are thought to “remain in contact with his representatives” as per Sky Sports. Fellow Italian side Juventus are also interested.

A deal for Zirkzee would require interested clubs to activate his release clause, which is a reasonable £34m. He has two years left on his current deal at Bologna, but any offer which meets his exit clause means he will leave the club.

How Zirkzee would benefit Marcus Rashford

Despite missing out on the Netherlands’ 26-man squad for Euro 2024, Zirkzee’s campaign in 2023/24 was very impressive. He played 34 games for Bologna in Serie A, scoring 11 times and registering five assists. He also scored once and assisted two goals in three Italian Cup matches.

Football analyst Ben Mattinson described Zirkzee on X as “one of the most intelligent” strikers in the game right now, explaining how the Dutchman is a “facilitator of build-up play” and has “elite spatial awareness”, two key attributes of the forward's game which have been on show at Bologna all season long.

Indeed, Zirkzee is an excellent link player, able to drop deep to facilitate teammates and help spring passes forwards, before getting into the penalty box on the end of passes. This is reflected in his Fbref stats, with a tally of 2.81 progressive passes per 90 minutes showing just how well he can help progress play forward. It places the attacker in the top 17% of strikers in Europe. He also averages 0.91 passes into the penalty box per 90, which ranks him in the top 20% of strikers. His link-up play is second to very few.

This is certainly something that could benefit Marcus Rashford. The Englishman has played his best football on the left wing, partnered with a striker who is able to drop deeper and facilitate his explosive runs from out to in, driving towards the penalty box.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

This was something on show with Wout Weghorst in 2022/23 but is also the reason Rashford had such a successful partnership with Anthony Martial, who has recently left Old Trafford following the expiration of his contract.

The Frenchman is a master at dropping deeper, pulling defenders away to create space and allowing teammates to bounce the ball off him.

His superb link-up player is a standout feature of his game, something noted in an article by Breaking the Lines in 2020. Rashford and Martial’s joint record shows how well they linked up. The Englishman has combined with Martial for goals more than any other player.

This is something that Zirkzee could bring to Old Trafford once more. He is also superb at dropping deep, pulling defenders away and linking play up. The Dutchman would help vacate space for Rashford to drive into the penalty box and get his shot away, his most effective method of finding the back of the net.

His heatmap, courtesy of SofaScore, from the 2023/24 Serie A season shows just how often he drops deeper, almost into a second-striker role. This would allow Rashford to explode because he can attack the space the 23-year-old has helped to create.

Zirkzee’s 2.28 live ball shot-creating actions per 90 minutes show just how much of a benefit he could be to Rashford. He ranks in the top 17% of strikers in Europe for this last season, a really impressive attribute, largely because of how easily he can help create something out of nothing.

Signing the Bologna star would allow United to get a lot more than a striker who scores goals. He is a different profile to Hojlund, who is a proficient channel runner, and an expert in the penalty box. Zirkzee adds depth and gets the best out of one of United’s best players, Rashford.

For a fee of just £34m, it seems like a very good deal for INEOS to do. Of course, the competition from the likes of Arsenal and Milan would be tough, but the Dutchman is a player who could elevate the United squad to new heights, and help Rashford rediscover his best form.

Liverpool eyeing a true "genius" manager to replace Jurgen Klopp

To all appearances, Liverpool are flying high right now and, in theory, are well-placed to challenge for a quadruple, but a sense of dejection sits at the core of every supporter as the campaign edges closer to completion.

Jurgen Klopp is to stand down from his role as manager at Anfield at the end of the season, and this is no precipitous decision. The German has enjoyed sweeping success during his time at the club and has won Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup titles among others.

But the Reds are in a fine position indeed, top of the Premier League by five points, topping their Europa League group before Christmas, awaiting Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final and recently dispatching Norwich City 5-2 in the FA Cup fourth round, with further Championship opposition in the next round.

Klopp, by his own admission, is "running out of energy" after eight-and-a-half years of unrelenting action, and after fixing the issues of the 2022/23 term, the 56-year-old feels the time is right for a changing of the guard, with a shortlist compiled.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool's shortlist to replace Jurgen Klopp

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool have compiled a three-man shortlist to identify Klopp's successor.

While Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the early frontrunner, Sporting Lisbon's Ruben Amorim and Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi are also coveted.

The latter has done an exemplary job with Brighton & Hove Albion and is reported to be high on FSG's wishlist, and given his experience and success on English shores, could be an excellent option.

Liverpool eye up "special" Xabi Alonso alternative to supercharge Nunez

Jurgen Klopp is approaching the dying embers of his Anfield tenure and FSG are working on a replacement.

ByAngus Sinclair How Roberto De Zerbi would benefit Mac Allister

Liverpool are in a fine position to get their hands on some silverware this season but more importantly, are poised for an exciting future with a rich blend of senior talent and prodigious potential.

De Zerbi has proved himself a "genius" tactician, as said by former player Maxime Lopez, and while he doesn't offer a replica of Klopp's heavy-metal style, the suffocating, possession-centric approach would be something that the Reds squad could adapt to.

Such a style demands a first-class operator to control the flow and enhance the fluency, but luckily Liverpool have such a player in Alexis Mac Allister, who left De Zerbi's Seagulls in the summer to complete a £35m transfer with the Merseyside outfit.

Mac Allister, a 2022 World Cup winner and the centrepiece in Brighton's Europa League qualification last year, impressed under the Seagulls boss with eight goals and three assists from midfield. That said, he has been playing in a deeper-lying role than he might desire with Liverpool but he has plied his trade expertly to ensure Liverpool are firing on all cylinders.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 15% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 18% for progressive passes and the top 20% for progressive carries per 90 to emphasise his creativity and ball-playing aptitude.

The Argentinan gem knows all about De Zerbi's managerial prowess and would welcome the Italian as a replacement for Klopp. Indeed, a more advanced role could be given to the summer signing again, meaning it's an appointment that should well ensure the 24-year-old moves to the next level; a frightening thought.

Sunderland tried signing a ‘monster’ for just £8m, now he’s a UCL winner

From a fractured club beyond repair to a side battling at the top of the Championship, Sunderland have now recovered from years of poor ownership, suicidal investment and managerial catastrophes that saw them suffer back-to-back relegations from the Premier League in 2017.

Spearheaded by Tony Mowbray, who has developed a habit of winning matches, developing youngsters and an attractive playing style, the Black Cats are now on the right path to becoming a top-flight club, having narrowly missed out on promotion through the play-offs last season.

While Sunderland are pointing in a forward direction these days, they are still haunted by their terrible decision-making towards the latter stages of their Premier League journey, especially in the transfer window.

The Black Cats' scattergun nature to transfers saw them bring in the likes of Didier Ndong, Jack Rodwell, Papy Djilobodji and Ricky Alvarez, who bled the club dry with their extortionate transfer fees and wages but contributed very little to their plight towards relegation.

What was perhaps more frustrating than the nature of transfer dealings during this period was who the Sunderland hierarchy passed up the chance to sign, only to watch them thrive elsewhere.

Although passing up the chance to sign Ivan Rakitic in 2011 and Toby Alderweireld in 2014 will likely have supporters pulling their hair out, the most infuriating example of a player that got away was Premier League and Champions League-winning defender Virgil van Dijk.

Did Sunderland almost sign Virgil van Dijk?

According to the Daily Mail, Sunderland were eyeing up an £8m move for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk in the 2015 winter transfer window.

Virgil van Dijk for Celtic

Gus Poyet, their manager at the time, even admitted on the "What the Falk" podcast years later that he was "very, very interested" in landing a deal for the highly-rated 23-year-old. Coincidentally, Poyet also tried to complete a move a few years before when he was at Brighton.

He detailed: "After 20 minutes watching the game with my assistant I knew we had to sign him. It was too easy for him [Van Dijk]. With all respect for all the other players playing in that game, and for the Dutch league, it was like a first-team player playing with under-15s in a training session. It was incredible.

"At that time the price was £3m and Brighton was not able to buy him because our most expensive player was £1.5m.

"The year after we bought Leo Ulloa for £3m but because he was a striker. For a defender? No chance. The following year he goes to Celtic. Then when they said to me about the possibility of getting him, we were very, very interested."

While the Black Cats showcased their interest, Southampton ultimately landed van Dijk for £13m.

With the Saints later selling the Dutchman for £75m to Liverpool in 2017, not taking a plunge on him is a decision Sunderland will live to regret for eternity, as the player that slipped through their grasp went on to become one of the best centre backs to grace the beautiful game, with Michael Owen lauding him as such in 2022.

What has Van Dijk gone on to achieve?

The defensive "monster", as described by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, has gone on to become a colossus at the back for Liverpool, orchestrating them through a trophy-laden spell as the Reds scooped the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

Virgil Van Dijk Liverpool

While he helped transform Jurgen Klopp's side into a trophy-winning machine, he was recognised for his magnificent defensive displays by being crowned the Players' Player of the Year and the UEFA Men's Player of the Year in 2019.

Van Dijk, simply put, is a generational defender, and he has established that tag with his domineering performances, drawing praise from one of the best strikers in the world, Harry Kane, during a question-and-answer session with Prime Video Sport in 2022.

The Englishman said: “Obviously, [Virgil] Van Dijk is a fantastic defender,” Kane said. “He's been consistent now for Liverpool over many years and he won the Premier League and won the Champions League.

“So, he's a tough defender, and he's doing great this year after his injury last year.”

Kane met a multitude of stand-out centre backs across his career when he was at Tottenham, including John Terry, Vincent Kompany and Ruben Dias, but for the Bayern Munich striker, van Dijk tops them all.

At 32-years-old, the impact that the Dutchman has on Liverpool is immeasurable and as seen when he is absent from the starting XI – against Wolves on Saturday lunchtime during a 3-1 win – their defence looks jaded and disorganised.

Van Dijk's presence on the Reds back line is huge, but so is his presence among the elite defenders in world football, ranking in the top 12% for aerials won, top 10% for pass completion and top 9% for non-penalty xG, emphasis his importance in both boxes when compared against players positionally similar to him across Europe's top five leagues, as per FBref.

Given what the £29m-rated titan has gone on to achieve in his career, Sunderland supporters will be tearing their hair out at what could have been.

Arsenal Handed Declan Rice Warning B Fabrizio Romano

One of the biggest story lines of the summer transfer will be what club can secure the services of West Ham captain Declan Rice.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United are all reportedly chasing the signature of the England midfielder, and transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped more information on Arsenal’s chances of landing what would be a signature signing.

Arsenal transfer news – Declan Rice

Manchester City have entered the race for Rice, according to The Guardian.

The English and European champions submitted their first bid for the West Ham man on Thursday, a day after Arsenal submitted their second bid for the 24-year-old.

Fabrizio Romano tweeted that Manchester United are currently aware the midfielder's situation, but have yet to make a bid for the recent Europa Conference League winner.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Declan Rice and Arsenal?

declan-rice-west-ham-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-odegaard

Romano spoke to GIVEMESPORT, informing that Arsenal are still confident in their pursuit of the player.

The North London side are still convinced they will land their target this summer despite the interest of Man City and Man Utd.

Romano did stress that Arsenal must not waste time in their pursuit however, especially after losing out on Mudryk to Chelsea in January.

Romano told GIVEMESPORT: "Arsenal remain confident because they know the player wants to move, but it's also true that, in some moments, you have to be fast in the market.

"We saw the same kind of situation with Mykhailo Mudryk, who wanted the move. It was kind of public on social media in January, remember? But then if you don't close the deal, other things can happen."

Should Arsenal sign Declan Rice?

Rice will not be a cheap option for any side chasing him this summer, as a bidding war seems set to begin due to the interest of three separate Premier League teams.

Talksport’s Tony Cascarino pundit was full of praise for the West Ham skipper following another excellent season at the East London club.

Cascarino stated: “Declan Rice has played every game as if it’s his first and I think that’s admirable for someone so young to want to be as good as he can be and West Ham fans will tell you Declan drives that team."

Fellow Talksport pundit Gabby Agbonlahor believes that Rice’s time at West Ham has come to an end, saying:

“If I’m Declan Rice, I’m seeing my England teammates playing Champions League finals, playing Champions League games at the highest level, that’s exactly what he wants to do.”

Arsenal will have a battle on their hands to secure this signing, and they surely must follow the advice of Romano and attempt to get the deal over the line as quick as possible to avoid a bidding war breaking out.

However, you do have to fear for the Gunners if the treble winners are seriously looking to bring Rice to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Paratici could finally replace Spurs "liability" in summer swoop for 6 ft 5 "hero" – opinion

Tottenham Hotspur could well have identified a potential successor to Hugo Lloris at N17, amid recent links to Aston Villa stopper, Emi Martinez.

What’s the latest on Martinez to Spurs?

According to TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul, the north London outfit are said to be eyeing a potential swoop for the Argentine international this summer, with a concrete approach seemingly on the cards.

Writing on Twitter regarding that interest, the transfer insider revealed: “Tottenham have specific interest in [Emi] Martínez and may make an offer in the coming weeks.”

This follows reports last month that claimed those at Villa Park could be willing to sanction a sale for the World Cup winner ahead of next season, albeit with the Midlands side likely to be keen to recoup a fee that would make the 30-year-old one of the most expensive goalkeepers in the world.

Who could replace Lloris at Spurs?

The goalkeeping department will likely be an area of concern for Spurs’ sporting director, Fabio Paratici, with the transfer chief no doubt plotting to sign a suitable replacement for long-serving skipper, Lloris.

The latter man – who is currently out of action due to injury – only signed a new deal last year to keep him at the club until 2024, although doubts remain over his ability to remain as the first-choice option in the side, having been something of a “liability” in recent years, as per The Athletic’s James Maw.

The veteran asset has made four errors leading to goals so far this season in the Premier League – more than any other player – with the 36-year-old’s form having become arguably “unacceptable” of late, as per club insider, John Wenham.

As such, bringing in Martinez this summer could allow the chance for Paratici to find a new number one for the club, with the 6 foot 5 colossus having shown his class for both club and country of late.

The former Arsenal man – who made the move to Villa on a £17m deal back in 2020 – was notably an integral figure in his nation’s World Cup success at the tail-end of last year, earning the tournament’s Golden Glove award as a result.

A “hero” of the quarter-final shootout win over the Netherlands – as per talkSPORT pundit David Preece – Martinez also came up clutch in the showpiece triumph over France, producing a vital late save to deny Randal Kolo Muani at the death, before denying Kingsley Coman from the penalty spot.

While the imposing asset’s antics during the shootout and in the post-match celebrations may have sparked notable criticism – with his behaviour branded “despicable” by pundit Chris Sutton – they were undoubtedly effective, with the 26-cap rock offering a truly commanding presence in the sticks.

That quality has also been showcased at club level as the £120k-per-week machine ranks in the top 1% in Europe’s top five leagues for crosses stopped, showcasing his innate ability to dominate his own penalty area.

That is in stark contrast to the rather more slight, 6 foot 2 Lloris, who ranks in just the top 36% in that regard, with the Frenchman having become something of a weak point for his side.

While it may be rather ruthless to ditch a player who has given over a decade of service to the club, the signing of Martinez – who was recently voted ‘The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper for 2022’ – could represent the upgrade that Paratici and co are craving.

Kudus can be MUFC’s next Solskjaer

Manchester United are ramping up the gas on their pursuit of Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus, who has been linked with a multitude of Europe’s top clubs since his exploits at the 2022 World Cup with Ghana.

According to 90min, Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag is ‘exploring ways’ to forge a transfer for the dynamic forward, who would be a welcome addition to an ambitious outfit thriving as one of the most in-form teams in Europe right now – United have won nine of their past ten matches.

This comes in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the club in November, with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford now the only recognised central striking options at Old Trafford.

Despite the evident interest in the Ghanaian, the Eredivisie giants are reportedly only willing to part with their prolific prospect for a fee of £40m.

Kudus has been making steady increments across the early period of his professional career, and he has now become a player on the tip of numerous tongues across Europe as queries are made over his signature.

This season alone, the 22-year-old has scored ten goals and provided two assists from 21 appearances, despite only starting on ten occasions.

It’s his displays in the Champions League which have really caught the eye; with four goals and two assists from six group games, scoring against Liverpool, Rangers and Napoli, and his pedigree on the continental stage is already being established.

As per Sofascore, his average rating in the competition this term is an impressive 7.22, with his direct contributions complemented by some remarkable metrics – despite his four-goal haul, Kudus has only averaged 1.3 shots per match, demonstrating his clinical nature.

His sharpshooting skills, agile nature and pace, along with his ability to flourish even when dropping in and out of the starting XI, means that he could become United’s next Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who cemented cult status at the Theatre of Dreams following his exploits with the club in the 1990s and 2000s amid a reputation as an impact substitute.

Scoring 126 goals and supplying 50 assists across 366 appearances for the Red Devils, the Norwegian marksman was instrumental in the collection of multiple major titles, notably having a defining impact on the 1999 Champions League triumph, scoring the last-gasp winner against Bayern Munich in the final.

While Kudus certainly possesses the ability to earn his trade as the focal point of United’s attack as their starting talisman, he boasts a wealth of quality not too dissimilar to Solskjaer’s, and it is a partnership that Ten Hag must look to emulate.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig once lauded the 21-cap Ghana phenomenon as “electric”, and that lightning burst of talent will need to be ensnared and placed into the Old Trafford fold in the coming weeks if the Red Devils are to take an advantage and continue to flourish at the forefront of the Premier League.

Man Utd urged to ‘move fast’ for Cody Gakpo

Manchester United need to ‘move fast’ and sign PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Gakpo speculation rife

The Dutchman has become a huge star in the Eredivisie, tearing the league apart and already chipping in with eight goals and six assists so far this season.

Gakpo has been constantly linked with a move to United throughout the summer and the rumours still aren’t going away despite the transfer window being closed for a month now.

It could be that a January move comes to fruition, should the Netherlands international wish to leave PSV.

The Latest: Jones talks up January move for Gakpo

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones said that United should get the 23-year-old’s signing done before someone else can swoop in for him.

The transfer insider stated:

“To be able to shake off all that speculation and start the season like he has is unbelievable, to be honest.

“He’s got eight goals and six assists in seven Eredivisie games for PSV. Not only that, he played for the Netherlands and looked great. He came on as a sub and he was superb.

“United need to sign players who are confident and have that star quality. I think they should move fast here.”

The Verdict: Perfect for United

Gakpo really does look like a true star in the making, already shining in his homeland but seemingly possessing the pace, trickery and end product to excel in the Premier League.

With Erik ten Hag perhaps still looking for more firepower in his attack, the 23-year-old could be the perfect January signing, giving the squad an extra injection of brilliance for the second half of the season.

A tally of 52 goals and 42 assists in 148 PSV appearances speaks for itself, and given Gakpo’s age, he should only continue to grow as a player over the next five or six years.

Lewis Bate set to leave Leeds on loan

Lewis Bate is set to follow the likes of Jamie Shackleton and Ian Poveda out of the Leeds United exit door this summer, reports Joe Donnohue.

The Lowdown: Busy summer

Jesse Marsch, along with Victor Orta, has been hard at work all summer, rebuilding the Whites’ squad with six exciting new signings.

Brenden Aaronson, Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Adams, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca and Darko Gyabi have all arrived, but of course, their presence requires spaces to be cleared within the squad.

Alongside the high-profile exits of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, Marsch and Orta are also hard at work finding homes for many of the club’s young players, and Bate now looks set to venture away from the Premier League in search of regular first-team football.

The Latest: Another exit

According to Donnohue, Bate, who has one very important admirer in the shape of Andrea Radrizzani, ‘could be the next LUFC youngster heading on loan after Shackleton’, with interest from multiple League One clubs.

‘Understand the reason he didn’t go on tour is due to (the) loan interest,’ the Yorkshire Evening Post reporter writes.

Ian Poveda is also expected to depart, with the club reportedly willing to listen to loan and/or permanent offers for the former Manchester City talent.

The Verdict: Great decision

With the arrivals of Gyabi, Roca and Adams more than filling the void left by Phillips, the decision to send Bates out into the big bad world of lower-league football is certainly a good one.

At 19, the midfielder has already paid his dues in underage football, racking up 57 appearances for Chelsea’s various youth sides and a further 23 while at Leeds, popping up in the Whites’ first-team just four times, per Transfermarkt.

Likened to a young Jack Wilshere and hailed by Jermaine Beckford for his ability to control the ball in tight spaces, spray passes around and drive forward with the ball, if Bate can display all of these skills on a consistent basis in League One there is no reason he cannot be a part of Marsch’s plans from 2023/24.
