Leeds: Tim Thornton makes fresh Cody Gakpo claim

Leeds United would still like to sign PSV forward Cody Gakpo in January but could find a transfer ‘difficult’, according to Tim Thornton.

The Lowdown: Gakpo links

Victor Orta flew out to the Netherlands looking to bring Gakpo to Elland Road in a dramatic late summer move.

However, as we know, a move failed to materialise, with Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal thought to have played a part in Gakpo’s decision to stay with PSV.

The 23-year-old, hailed as a ‘sensational player’ by Football Oranje editor and Dutch football expert Michael Bell, has contributed to an impressive 19 goals in just 13 games this season, and looks destined to represent his country in the upcoming World Cup.

The Latest: Thornton’s comments

Sky Sports reporter Thornton was talking to GiveMeSport regarding Leeds and Gakpo in a story shared on Tuesday evening.

He said that Leeds, in an ‘ideal world’, would still like to move for Gakpo in 2023, however, he said that a move could prove complicated if the player impresses in Qatar with the Netherlands.

“In an ideal world, would Leeds like to sign him in January? I think, yes. Will they get him in January? Well, there were lots of clubs interested in the last window and if he goes to the World Cup and does really well, then it might be a more difficult deal to get done. It will depend on what happens in the next few months.”

The Verdict: Spot on

You’d expect that a number of other clubs are already looking at Gakpo following his unbelievable 2022/23 form that shows no signs of slowing up, and that may only increase should he star in the World Cup.

Therefore, the ship may have already sailed when it comes to Orta landing Gakpo, but it appears as if Leeds may be willing to try again.

He can play anywhere across the front three, so could be an inspired signing, however, with his Transfermarkt valuation at a career-high £31.5m, any move could come at a record fee for Leeds.

Newcastle must unleash Alexander Isak

Newcastle United will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the 2022/23 Premier League campaign as they travel away to face Wolves this afternoon.

They have picked up five points from their first three matches in the division and now come up against a team without a win.

Eddie Howe’s side come into the game off the back of a 3-3 draw with champions Manchester City, along with a 2-1 win over Tranmere in the League Cup in midweek.

The Magpies were dealt an injury blow in their last top-flight outing, though, as Callum Wilson suffered a knock that will keep him out of action for a couple of weeks.

One player the head coach must now unleash for this match against Wolves is centre-forward Alexander Isak, who signed from Real Sociedad earlier this week.

The Sweden international is set to be eligible to face Bruno Lage’s team and the injury to Wilson could open the door for him to make his full debut.

Chris Wood is the only other natural striker option but his record of two goals in 20 Premier League appearances for the club since joining from Burnley in January, with one of those coming from the penalty spot, and only created one ‘big chance’.

Isak could come in and offer more in front of goal at the top end of the pitch. Radio presenter Kev Lawson recently claimed that the attacker has been described as a “unicorn” because of his mixture of size and quality.

Howe also hailed the attacker in the announcement of his arrival at St. James’ Park, saying: “He is an outstanding talent who is capable of making a big contribution to the team. He is technically very good, with a mix of attributes that will complement us, but he is also at a great age to grow with this club.”

The striker, as club legend Alan Shearer put it, can “cause havoc” with his movement and has shown that he can produce quality in the final third.

Isak scored seven goals and created seven ‘big chances’ in his last 28 La Liga starts for Sociedad since the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign. That came after he found the back of the net 17 times and provided three ‘big chances’ in 2020/21.

These statistics suggest that he could be a big upgrade on Wood in terms of both scoring goals and creating opportunities for his teammates, which is a view that may also be shared by the club given that they have lavished out a record £63m fee for his services.

Therefore, Howe must unleash the £120k-per-week menace to replace Wilson as the starting number nine for this match.

West Ham: Big Eric Bailly transfer news

West Ham United ‘have made contact’ with Manchester United over centre-back Eric Bailly, according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell.

The lowdown

West Ham have spent a fraction over £100million on five new signings this summer – centre forward Gianluca Scamacca, centre-back Nayef Aguerd, left winger Maxwel Cornet, central midfielder Flynn Downes and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Bailly, 28, has yet to feature for United in 2022/23 and only started three Premier League games last season.

The former Villarreal man has two years left on a contract that’s worth £80,000 per week.

The latest

Whitwell wrote on Twitter that ‘clubs [are] progressing talks on taking Eric Bailly’, with West Ham now in touch.

Ligue 1 outfits Marseille and Monaco are also interested in the Ivorian.

However, Bailly’s wages are so high that suitors would prefer Man. United to cover part of his wages as part of a loan deal.

And the Red Devils would prefer to offload him permanently, clearing themselves of obligation completely.

As a result, the transfer ‘could go to [the] deadline’ in just over a fortnight’s time.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates-2/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict

Bailly would bring pedigree to the London Stadium, having featured in the IFFHS CAF Team of the Decade alongside the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Yaya Toure and Mohamed Salah.

He’s a defender who can sometimes adopt a slightly unorthodox style, though.

Indeed, The Daily Mail noted that he drew comparisons to Spiderman for his unconventional techniques in a 1-1 Champions League draw with Young Boys last season.

It will be interesting to see how his situation evolves in the next two weeks.

Will he show a willingness to take a pay cut to facilitate a permanent transfer? Will United loan him out to at least reduce their salary payments? This could be one to watch for a dramatic late deal on September 1.

Celtic must start Liel Abada v Ross County

Celtic are back in action this afternoon for their first away clash of the new Premiership campaign as Ange Postecoglou’s side travel to Dingwall to take on Ross County.

Their previous match saw the Hoops beat Aberdeen 2-0 last weekend thanks to goals from Stephen Welsh and Jota.

Now that the Scottish champions are on the hunt for their first away win of the new campaign, we think that Postecoglou should make a change to the starting XI from last weekend.

One player who didn’t start against Aberdeen but who we feel should be in from the beginning this time around is Liel Abada.

Abada must start for Celtic

Throughout his debut campaign at Parkhead in 2021/22, the winger appeared in more league games (36) than any other Hoops player, highlighting just how reliable he was for the club.

In those appearances, the 20-year-old racked up ten goals and six assists, also ending the season with more shots at goal (81) and shots on target (33) than any other player in Postecoglou’s squad.

The attacker, who is currently valued at €8m (£6.7m) according to Football Transfers, also delivered 111 crosses in total, leaving only three other Celtic players with more. This shows the kind of attacking danger that he possesses and why he could be a massive problem for County to try and handle if he starts.

Bearing in mind how this afternoon’s opponents faced more shots (621) than any other team in the Premiership last season, it’s safe to say that Abada could have a field day against them today if he’s at his best.

Hailed as a “wonderful” player by Frank McAvennie and dubbed a “superstar” by Nir Bitton, Abada could be a better option for the team this time around than Daizen Maeda, who started last weekend’s clash.

In 66 minutes on the pitch in the 2-0 win over Aberdeen, the Japanese attacker misplaced seven of the eight crosses that he attempted and ended up losing possession of the ball 12 times, in addition to having no attempts at goal (Sofascore).

With all this in mind, giving Abada his first start of the season could be the best way to ensure that the Bhoys continue their winning start to the campaign and potentially push their goal difference up at the same time.

Phil Hay relays Leeds transfer update

Leeds United journalist Phil Hay has relayed an exciting claim from Jesse Marsch regarding the Yorkshire club’s plans for the remainder of the current summer transfer window.

What’s the news?

In a recent Twitter post, Hay relayed information shared by the Leeds boss after seeing his team secure a convincing 4-0 victory over Blackpool yesterday.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

He said: “Marsch said Leeds are “actively hunting a striker”. After that, he thinks the incoming business for the summer will be pretty much done. #lufc”

The Whites have already been rather busy behind the scenes in terms of securing deals to bring new players to the club this summer.

As things stand, Leeds have welcomed Brendan Aaronson, Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Adams, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca and Darko Gyabi to Elland Road.

Having sold Kalvin Phillips to fellow Premier League club Manchester City in a deal worth around £45m, this would have certainly helped Leeds in terms of being able to splash the cash on bringing new players in.

Leeds fans will be buzzing

Now that Marsch has revealed that the club are not yet done in terms of signing new players this summer and will be looking to bring a new striker in before the window closes, this should be very exciting for a lot of Leeds fans to hear.

Bearing in mind how the Whites only found the net 42 times in the Premier League last season compared to the season before that when they scored 62 goals in their 38 league games, it’s easy to see why Marsch wants to bring a new striker in.

Having had to play a significant number of league matches last season without Patrick Bamford, who has 19 goals in 47 top-flight appearances with Leeds, this may have made the need to add a new striker to the squad a priority for the Whites boss for the summer.

Moving forward, if the Yorkshire club can end their latest summer transfer window by adding a new striker to the squad, this would surely top off what has already been a very productive and impressive period for the Whites and make a lot of fans happy in the meantime.

It would also surely put the team in a good place to attack their next Premier League campaign and hopefully avoid another relegation battle.

Tottenham: Agbonlahor makes Jesus ‘hijack’ claim

Tottenham Hotspur could hijack Arsenal’s deal to sign Man City star Gabriel Jesus as talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor shares what he’s ‘heard’.

The Lowdown: Spurs in hunt?

The Lilywhites are reliably believed to have been in contention for the Brazil international before their north London rivals stole a march and entered advanced talks.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte is reportedly eyeing a new striker before the start of the 2022/2023 Premier League season, coming after they sealed deals for Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster and Yves Bissouma.

Richarlison is also said to be on the radar of transfer chief Fabio Paratici with Conte’s side seemingly scouring the market for a world class forward addition.

The Latest: Agbonlahor makes Jesus claim…

Speaking to Football Insider, former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor has shared what he’s ‘heard’ from a ‘good source’ on the future of Jesus – believing Spurs could well hijack a move from the Gunners.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He explained:

“Gabriel Jesus, apparently, doesn’t want to play as a centre-forward,”

“I heard that from a good source. Apparently, he wants to play on the wing, he prefers it there.

If he is going in as a winger you can understand it. Some people may think he won’t want to be second choice for Harry Kane but he won’t be because he might be on the right, fighting with Kulusevski.

“Then you’ve got Son on the left with Kane. Maybe that’s where Spurs are at. He could be that competition on the right-hand side.

“Arsenal better be careful [Spurs] could easily hijack that deal. He’s not going to play as a striker for Spurs, he’s going to play as a right-winger.

“That would be a scary front three. Jesus, [Heung-min] Son and [Harry] Kane with [Dejan] Kulusevski as an option.”

The Verdict: Do it?

The 25-year-old, who thrived on the right-wing at points under Guardiola last season, has been called an ‘enigma’ by South American football expert Tim Vickery.

Given his rich vein of form at the back end of 21/22, proving Jesus knows where the net is, it’s unclear which role he would suit best at Tottenham in our view – but it’s clear he would add a degree of quality both as a deputy for Kane and as competition for Kulusevski.

Reportedly valued at around £55 million by City, the player’s age and quality indicates this price tag is more than fair.

Leeds: Romano drops Perkins claim

Leeds United have instigated discussions to sign highly-rated West Hm United youngster Sonny Perkins, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown: Rising talent

Signed by West Ham from the Leyton Orient academy system in 2019, Perkins has shone for the youth sides in London, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in 53 outings.

That impressive form earned the young centre-forward first-team recognition under David Moyes last term, initially featuring in two Europa League contests before being handed a Premier League bow in Leeds’ 3-2 victory at The London Stadium in January.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-4/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now, having failed to reach an agreement over a new deal in East London, the Whites could be about to swoop in…

The latest: Romano makes claim

Taking to Twitter, renowned transfer specialist Romano has claimed Leeds and Aston Villa have opened up a dialogue with the ‘promising’ 18-year-old.

He said: “Leeds and Aston Villa have opened talks to sign promising forward Sonny Perkins. Perkins has made 3 appearances for West Ham. Both clubs want to sign him.”

Elsewhere, a report from The Guardian has said that Tottenham are also interested in the England youth international.

The verdict: Budding prospects

Although the senior development of the likes of Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt and Charlie Cresswell was somewhat fast-tracked last season due to an overwhelming amount of injuries decimating the Elland Road ranks, all three prodigious young talents shone in their own right.

Two years older than Perkins, Gelhardt and the Hammers starlet have enjoyed similar paths until now with the Liverpool-born Leeds ace scoring three times in six England Under 18 outings, whilst the current West Ham man has two strikes in six appearances at the same level.

Last season, the teenager scored 12 times and provided one assist in 21 Premier League 2 displays, highlighting a readiness to take a potentially seamless next step in a promising career.

Seemingly not afraid to give youth a chance, adding Perkins – who was described as an ‘exciting player’ by Premier League stalwart Mark Noble – to Jesse Marsch’s options would make an abundance of sense, especially for what is likely to be a relatively low financial outlay.

Spurs: Kulusevski terrorises Norwich

Tottenham Hotspur winger Dejan Kulusevski put on an attacking masterclass as he terrorised Norwich City to secure Champions League football in N17 next season.

The Sweden international bagged two of Spurs’ five goals before he was substituted in the 68th minute but by then, he had long made his mark, allowing Heung-min Son to swoop in and capitalise on a broken Canaries backline.

Indeed, the South Korean sensation also bagged himself a brace, which was enough to see him share the Premier League’s Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah but it was the Juventus loanee who was arguably the clear-cut standout at Carrow Road.

Earning an 8.9 rating on SofaScore, the 22-year-old dynamo was a constant threat in the final third, not only registering a total of three shots but also managing a whopping five successful dribbles from six attempts, easily bypassing Dimitrios Giannoulis on the right flank.

Kulusevski also provided two key passes, meaning he created a pair of chances for his attacking counterparts, Son and Harry Kane. Furthermore, he amazingly won eight of his nine duels (88%), only further emphasising how he had his way with Dean Smith’s defence.

Elsewhere, the £31.5m-rated marksman also put in one tackle and one interception as he capped off his fine half-season at the club in style.

His contribution took his total tally for Spurs to five goals and eight assists from 20 appearances, averaging a direct contribution once every 97.5 minutes – almost one every game.

It’s no wonder manager Antonio Conte was able to turn things around to guide the north Londoners back into Europe’s top competition.

As The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick wrote in his post-match ratings column, Kulusevski was “decisive again” before going onto praise his selfless nature.

Once lauded as a “monster” by Italian Football expert Nima Tavallaey Roodsari, Juventus’ loss has certainly been Tottenham’s gain and we got to witness yet another fine display from the young winger.

Kulusevski absolutely terrorised the Canaries with his attacking exploits as he helped secure a lucrative top-four finish in the Premier League.

Sunderland vs Sheff Wed team news: Broadhead injury update

Journalist James Hunter has shared an update on the fitness of Sunderland striker Nathan Broadhead ahead of their upcoming League One play-off tie against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday.

The Lowdown: Injury concerns

The 24-year-old limped out of the Black Cats’ final game of the season against Morecambe last weekend after scoring the only goal of the game, which helped his side secure a top-six finish.

The forward has already missed a significant chunk of the campaign after suffering from a long-term hamstring issue, and his latest problem immediately sparked fears that he could miss out on the two vital legs versus the Owls.

The Latest: Neil’s comments

As quoted by Hunter via a post on Twitter, Alex Neil was ‘cagey’ in his pre-match press conference when asked if Broadhead would be involved in the tie against Darren Moore’s outfit.

He said: “We’ll make a late call on him.”

The Verdict: Star in the making

Sunderland fans will be hoping that their star loanee is declared fit for the Owls contest after being in some seriously impressive form this season, having scored 13 goals in just 25 appearances in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

The £450k-rated ace, who is currently on loan at the Stadium of Light from Premier League side Everton, was described as a “fantastic” player by his former manager Lee Johnson during his time at the club.

Broadhead clearly has plenty of his prime years ahead of him and you would imagine that the League One club will want to retain his services beyond this season, but for now, their main priority and focus will be doing everything they can to take that one step closer to clinching promotion to the Championship next term.

Sandeep Lamichhane, Nepal's first global T20 icon

‘If I can do it, you can too’ is the 18-year old’s message to Nepal’s next generation as he reflects on his journey

Umar Farooq01-Mar-2019A majority of Nepal’s 25 million population lives and breathes cricket. Yet, very few have traversed the distance 18-year old Sandeep Lamichhane has. Closing in on three years since his senior international debut against Namibia in April 2016, he’s already become a household T20 name, having played in leagues across India, Pakistan, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, the UAE and the West Indies. The journey to get there hasn’t been easy. The first step, also the biggest, was to convince his parents that cricket won’t ruin his childhood. “My parents wanted me to be good student so that I can earn some good money,” he tells ESPNcricinfo in Dubai, where he’s playing for Lahore Qalandars in PSL 2019. “But I had different ideas and I asked them two-three years for myself.”To join an academy, he left his parental home and moved in with his married sister and her in-laws. Having taken the first step towards becoming a cricketer, Lamichhane soon found out there was much more he needed to do. It involved waking up early and reaching the ground well before the regular trainees arrived.11:18

‘We all want to play Test cricket for Nepal one day’ – Lamichhane

“I didn’t get much time with coaches in my earlier days because there were a lot of other boys too during the regular hours of academy from 4pm to 7pm. So I used to go earlier at 12 noon to get more time in nets and with the coach. I wanted to be different from others to be noticed and I knew I needed to work very hard. I trained for 6-7 hours every day.”In wanting to be different, he chose legspin – not entirely unique as a craft, but certainly among the more challenging disciplines. Lamichhane was a natural, who used to bowl the legbreak and googly, but couldn’t land them at the right spot. This struggle to find consistency resulted in those long hours at the nets, especially because match time was far and few.

“When I used to play for fun near my sister’s house, I remember a boy’s mother coming up and telling me to not spoil her son’s life by playing cricket. The same mother came up to me recently and encouraged her son to play with me.”

Around the time Nepal were looking to select their Under-19 World Cup squad ahead of the 2016 edition in Bangladesh, Pubudu Dassanayake, then Nepal’s coach, visited Lamichhane’s academy scouting for talent. He was immediately impressed with what he saw. Next thing Lamichhane knew, he was among the tournament probables.”It was unbelievable for me because there was a time when I wasn’t getting the opportunity and suddenly I was in the U-19 World Cup probables camp,” he reflects. “I knew I had a long way to go, but the real challenge of playing for the senior team started from there on.”3:03

‘Asked my parents 2-3 years to make a name in cricket’ – Lamichhane

Lamichhane was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, with 14 wickets and a best of 5 for 27 against Ireland. A few months later he was invited to play for Kowloon Cantons in the inaugural Hong Kong T20 Blitz. It was there that Lamichhane found himself playing alongside Michael Clarke, Australia’s World Cup winning captain, who was impressed enough to invite him to play for Western Suburbs, the Sydney-based club. Things have looked up since.Last year, he played a key role for Nepal at the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, where they finished eighth to earn ODI status. He went to the IPL and played for Delhi Daredevils, now Delhi Capitals, under head coach Ricky Ponting. While he didn’t start, he impressed towards the back end of a disappointing campaign and has been retained ahead of the upcoming season. He’ll look to carry his PSL form there, having picked up 10 wickets in four games so far.Lamichhane’s journey is closely being followed back home, and he hopes to inspire youngsters. His main concern is Nepal’s cricket infrastructure and an administration that is in shambles – Cricket Association of Nepal is currently suspended – resulting in ICC cutting off funding. For the moment, the ICC essentially manages the running of cricket along with an interim administrative body. This suspension, however, won’t affect Nepal’s participation in ICC events.”It’s great to be an inspiration and give back to my people that believe that this game can get their sons somewhere,” he says. “Representing your country is a dream come true and I would love to see more boys coming into the game with a belief that they can do something with their life.”When I used to play for fun near my sister’s house, I remember a boy’s mother coming up and telling me to not spoil her son’s life by playing cricket. The same mother came up to me recently and encouraged her son to play with me. I have tears recalling that and the tough times.””There is not much investment into cricket in our country, but the love for the game is huge. If this happened in any other country, players would’ve quit playing. But here, despite hardships and no real prospects, players are pushing themselves only for the love for the game.”
