Martin could instantly drop Archer by unleashing Southampton promotion hero

Russell Martin won’t be impressed whatsoever by Southampton’s slow start out of the blocks to Premier League life, with four defeats on the spin now in the top flight.

To further pile on the misery, the Saints have only scored once across that bleak span of defeats, with more blanks fired last time out against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.

De Ligt scores against Southampton.

The Red Devils would end up coasting to a 3-0 victory, but the story of the game could well have been different if Cameron Archer had tucked away a penalty when the game was at 0-0, on what was a torrid day for the former Aston Villa striker up top.

Archer's performance vs Man United

It would have been a surprise to the home contingent packed into St. Mary’s that Archer was given the nod to lead the line on Saturday, with this being his first Premier League start for his new employers since his summer move from Villa.

Archer will know now it’s very unlikely he will make it two starts in a row travelling to Goodison Park, with his performance very underwhelming last time out away from just his tame spot-kick miss.

Andre Onana would comfortably save his effort from the spot in a game that passed Archer by away from this incident, with the 22-year-old only managing 16 touches of the ball and nine accurate passes before being hooked off the pitch just after the hour mark.

That would even be fewer touches than Saints goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who amassed 47 in contrast, with the ex-Arsenal shot-stopper ensuring his new employers weren’t on the receiving end of a more comprehensive drubbing by also making seven saves.

Archer only winning one of his six duels in the contest also allowed the likes of Matthijs de Ligt to grow in confidence at the back, who would end up opening the scoring for the visitors after Archer’s dire penalty, before Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho then made sure of the three points.

It will be up to Martin now to decide who he starts in the underperforming Saints man’s place tonight, despite the fact Archer did fire home two goals the last time Southampton played in the competition last month, beating Cardiff City 5-3 in the process.

But, after such a poor display against Man United, alternatives to Archer will likely now be on his mind ahead of a clash with Everton.

Players who could replace Archer

Martin will be scrambling in his head who to start against the Toffees up top, knowing that Sean Dyche’s men are also in dire need of a win on Tuesday evening.

Therefore, the side might not be as weak as the one that was fielded against the Bluebirds in the last round, with the likes of Adam Armstrong and others in with a shout of taking Archer’s place.

Armstrong could well get the nod owing to the fact he is still held in the Saints’ good books for his heroics last campaign – having helped himself to 24 strikes on the way to promotion being sealed – and this tie at Goodison Park might well see him break his unwanted duck for the season.

Ben Brereton-Diaz will also be in with a shout to move into the striker position, having started against Man United, whilst Ross Stewart also stands a chance as the injury-prone striker did replace Archer over the weekend.

Southampton manager Russell Martin.

Whoever is chosen to start this mid-week will want to stake a claim for a starting spot moving forward in Martin’s main XI, with Archer not exactly banging down the door for a consistent starting spot after his Red Devils horror show.

Sam Billings primed to seize his chance after life on England's fringes

Buttler injury opens door to extended run in ODI squad after luckless tour of India

Sam Billings helped the rebuilding effort•AFP/Getty Images

At the start of March, Sam Billings was full of positivity about an upcoming three-match period that could have locked him into England’s T20 World Cup squad: he had not been given an opportunity in their T20I series in India, but had expected to play all three of the ODIs that followed before trying to force his way into the Delhi Capitals team in the IPL. “It’s really exciting,” he said at the time. “The strategy was always to give myself the best chance of being selected in the World Cup.”But things have not gone to plan. Billings suffered a shoulder injury diving on the boundary in the first ODI, ruling him out of the next two games, and after starting the IPL on Delhi’s bench, was in line to make his first appearance of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders but watched as the worsening Covid-19 situation caused the tournament to be postponed. That meant a flight home to the UK and 10 days of self-isolation in a hotel room, “watching the planes fly over [Heathrow] Terminal Five”.Desperate to get onto the pitch, he was the first English IPL player back in the County Championship, playing straight after his quarantine period was complete, before spending three weeks as a back-up wicketkeeper in the Test squad – dropping a tough catch at fine leg when he got onto the pitch as a sub fielder – and playing three Blast games for Kent, taking his social-media trolls to task after an innings of 30 off 30 balls on a tough Cardiff pitch proved to be match-winning.”It’s just nice to be playing, full stop,” he said on Friday morning, before England’s T20I squad travelled from Cardiff to the Ageas Bowl. “I think [last night] was my fourth innings of the summer and my fifth since January. It’s been an experience, definitely, to say the least.”It has been deflating at times, not playing any cricket and missing out on all fronts, really. It’s kind of been a close shave in all formats at the moment and it was just nice to be back out there playing last night: it’s a lot better than running the drinks.”In that light, Billings’ innings of 24 off 29 balls was more important than the numbers suggest. He put on 54 off 48 balls with Liam Livingstone for the fifth wicket, and while he chopped on against Wanindu Hasaranga with 13 runs required, their stand had secured the game after a nervous stumble to 36 for 4 in the run chase.Specifically, Billings highlighted the fact that, while in years gone by, he might have looked to play some shots and “make a statement”, he instead focused only on taking the game deep and nudging ones and twos to build a partnership on a turgid pitch.Related

Sam Billings: 'I just want to be tricky to bowl at'

Livingstone makes virtue of versatility in pitch for World Cup role

England's bowlers set up big win before Buttler seals 1-0 lead

“Last night was really pleasing from my point of view,” he said. “In the past I would have tried even harder to make a bit more of a statement as opposed to just getting the job done. It was a real shame to get out but to get stuck in and play the role that was needed for the team: it wasn’t pretty from Liam and I at times but ultimately it’s about getting the side over the line.”In the past, I’ve put way too much pressure on myself, but I think last year for me was a huge turning point. I put myself under a lot of pressure, of course, when I got that opportunity initially, but the consistent run of games against very good attacks in Australia and Pakistan really give me confidence just to back my own game, and it was a consistency more for me that was really pleasing last year.”[Last night] was my fourth game in about six months so for me the pressure was actually off a little bit in that I just concentrated on doing the basics really well. When you haven’t played in a while, you just strip it right back and concentrate on those kind of things. And I’m 30 now – I’m no spring chicken anymore – so I’ve got a bit of experience behind me. The age thing definitely helps in giving you some perspective.”Billings was likely to continue in the middle order during the ODI series against Sri Lanka regardless, but Jos Buttler’s injury – confirmed on Friday to be a calf tear, which had opened up a spot for Billings in the second T20I – effectively locks him in as a middle-order batter. While Ben Stokes is certain to come back into the side when fully fit, Billings will have an opportunity to build on an impressive run last summer against Ireland and Australia, which included his first international hundred, and force some tricky selection decisions further down the line.”In terms of ODIs, I had a really good summer last year and averaged 83 [78.75] throughout that summer in that format so I would be pretty disappointed if I didn’t get a gig. But this team is a very hard one to get into to.”[England] have two of the best white-ball batsmen and wicketkeepers in the world [in Buttler and Jonny Bairstow] but at the end of the day, you never know with injuries. You have just got to try and offer as much as you can to any side you go into. The more options you can give any side, it definitely helps your case; I’m working on the offspin as we speak…”

Jamie O’Hara slams "frustrating" Tottenham player in Arsenal defeat

As Tottenham Hotspur suffered defeat against North London rivals Arsenal, former midfielder Jamie O’Hara slammed one player who put in a “frustrating” display before coming off.

Tottenham suffer derby defeat once again

With Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Ricardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino all missing, the North London derby handed Tottenham Hotspur the best chance that they’re likely to get this season to gain an edge over Arsenal. Yet, in a repeat of the last campaign, the Lilywhites found themselves on the losing side once more.

Tottenham tell big club they're ready to pay £17m for "magnificent" forward

Spurs have set their sights on a Euro 2024 ace.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 14, 2024

This time, in a more narrow defeat, it was Gabriel Magalhaes who found himself wheeling away in celebration midway through the second half after overpowering Cristian Romero and heading home in style.

The defeat means that Spurs have lost back-to-back games in the Premier League to continue their disappointing form after the international break. The task now falls the way of Ange Postecoglou to find a way to get the best out of his side.

The Austrailian’s first task on that front may well be to replace Brennan Johnson in his side. Or, at least, that’s what O’Hara may believe. The talkSPORT pundit slammed the winger in a post on X, saying: “Brennan Johnson is even more frustrating to watch in the flesh than he is on TV.”

The former Spurs midfielder’s frustration can be justified by Johnson’s poor performance, in which he lost five out of his six duels – just 83% – and had only 25 touches before being withdrawn. Now, as Wilson Odobert continues to step up on his arrival, Johnson may well find his place under threat.

Johnson may lose Tottenham place

After arriving for a reported £48m last summer, Johnson showed plenty of promise in his debut campaign but is beginning to frustrate those around North London. But at just 23 years old, the likes of O’Hara must have patience in their winger, who managed five goals and 10 assists in the Premier League last time out.

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham.

The arrival of Odobert could concern Johnson, however, after he found himself replaced having struggled in the second half against Arsenal. Receiving plenty of the ball, the former Forest star could have been the driving force to an impressive victory for Postecoglou’s side. Instead, he quickly became the point of frustration.

For Spurs as a collective, they must now look ahead to the Carabao Cup and Coventry City, before Ferencvaros in the Europa League and a chance to get back to winning ways in the Premier League against a tough Brighton & Hove Albion side.

Fail to beat Brighton and the concern will only grow for Postecoglou. One thing for sure, another defeat in the North London derby certainly won’t have helped the former Celtic man who is enduring a tough start to his second season in charge.

Ollie Robinson senses Test cap is close

Sussex seamer sets sights on New Zealand series after months on fringes of England squad

Valkerie Baynes31-Mar-2021For England’s Test hopefuls the start of the County Championship season offers a simple, if slightly vague, formula for realising their dream: make runs, take wickets, get noticed by the national selectors.Ollie Robinson, the Sussex seam bowler, is among a handful of current players to have progressed considerably further along that path. Having spent the best part of five months over the past year in bio-secure international squad bubbles, he has given those in and around the England set-up a clear idea of what he can do. In turn, they have given him clarity on where he should aim next: to make his debut in the two-Test series against New Zealand in June. And, with the start of the LV= Insurance County Championship just a week away, he feels a maiden Test cap is close.”They’ve said to me, ‘look towards the New Zealand series’,” Robinson says. “That is my aim at the moment – start the season well with Sussex and hopefully I can get in that squad and in the XI.”Related

Dan Lawrence resets his sights as Chelmsford beckons after maiden England winter

When the ECB named a 55-man return-to-training group last May in the first major step towards staging a full international season in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, Robinson was there, a deserving inclusion after a seven-wicket display for England Lions against Australia A and a haul of 137 wickets – the most of any seamer – over the previous two Championship seasons.Robinson earned his maiden call-up to the senior squad ahead of the second Test against West Indies in July as England sought to manage the workloads of James Anderson and Mark Wood. He was among five players released when the side for the third Test was named and, a week later, took eight wickets, including three in 14 balls during a second-innings five-for, as Sussex won their opening match of the Bob Willis Trophy against Hampshire.Just over a week after that, Robinson was back in the England squad ahead of the second Test against Pakistan and he subsequently travelled as a reserve on the recent tours of Sri Lanka and India.”I feel a lot better for the experience,” Robinson says. “India was pretty tough and pretty eye-opening in terms of the conditions out there and what to expect as a Test cricketer so that’s probably going to stand me in better stead moving forward.”I have learned a lot skill-wise and off the field as well. Jimmy [Anderson] is 39 now and is probably the fittest he has ever been. Seeing him work every day is what has stuck with me – how well he trains and how hard he works. Making that a habit and not just an England thing, England have drilled that into me, that they want me to work just as hard for Sussex as I did with them. If I want to have a long international career that’s what I want to do for the rest of my career.”A tall bowler, whose disciplined line and length is relentless, Robinson has achieved some outstanding figures, like his career-best 8 for 34 against Middlesex in 2019, part of a 14-wicket return for the match.

“I just need to get that breakthrough in a Test match or series to cement my place for the plane to Australia”Ollie Robinson

Bowling in tandem with Craig Overton – the pair shared eight second-innings wickets evenly between them – Robinson helped lead England Lions to a nine-wicket victory over Australia A at the MCG in February 2020. Combined with his three wickets from the first innings, Robinson signalled that he was on track to take the next step should an opportunity arise as it did for Dan Lawrence, who scored a century in that same match and played the first five Tests of his career on the recently completed tours of Sri Lanka and India. While this English summer is hugely important to his ambitions of earning a place in the Ashes squad at the end of the year, Robinson feels somewhat liberated from putting pressure on himself.”It’s massive,” he says. “Performance-wise maybe not as much as in previous years. I feel England can sort of see and know what I do. They have watched me for a few years in terms of fitness and being around the England group.”I just need to get that breakthrough in a Test match or series to cement my place for the plane to Australia really. That is the most important thing for me this year.”Ollie Robinson played a big role in England Lions’ win over Australia A•Getty ImagesIf he does secure an Ashes berth, Robinson feels he already has good experience of the conditions, having played two seasons of grade cricket before the Lions tour.”I feel like my experiences Down Under are good enough to perform if called upon, even if I didn’t make my debut this summer,” he says. “I think that Lions tour was a really strong tour for everyone involved. Dan Lawrence was on it as well. We’ve both spoken and said if we are selected we almost know we can do well already.”While the Ashes are a big draw, Robinson is prepared to take his chance, wherever it comes. If that means more time sequestered in bio-secure environments, so be it.”I’m hungry to play any series, any game,” Robinson says. “I feel like if the Ashes is the only thing you’re looking at you’re not in the right mindset. You should want to play for England no matter who you’re playing against or what series it is. Bubble life is tough but there are tougher things – it’s not the hardest thing in the world.”In the meantime, Robinson will spearhead the attack at Sussex, who open their campaign on April 8 against Lancashire at Old Trafford after the fixture was moved north because a plague of bug larvae damaged the Hove outfield.LV= Insurance is the new title partner of the County Championship. Bigger deal than Nunez: Liverpool could launch move for £100m Gakpo upgrade

With Liverpool's pre-season tour in the United States about to commence, the dawn of the Arne Slot era is starting to feel very real indeed.

In just over three weeks, Liverpool will travel to Portman Road to kick off the 2024/25 Premier League season against newly-promoted Ipswich Town, and one of the most pertinent questions lingering right now is whether the Reds will have completed a signing.

Along with Fulham, Liverpool are one of only two top-flight outfits that have yet to welcome a fresh face to their senior squad, with sporting director Richard Hughes revealing that the Merseysiders' transfer window is building up to an August "crescendo" that could be realised once Slot has his full first team at his disposal and can accurately determine where to bring in a fresh face.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Liverpool are well stocked across the park but will make a move if an enticing opportunity presents itself in the weeks to come. While there's radio silence at the moment, one journalist believes that FSG could yet move to a top target from earlier in the window.

Liverpool transfer news

As per TEAMtalk, Liverpool will need to pay a jaw-dropping fee of £100m to sign Anthony Gordon this summer, with Newcastle United believed to be confident that they will retain the England international's services.

Still, one month ago, when the Magpies were stricken by PSR concerns, they offered the one-time Reds academy member to FSG as they desperately fought to balance the books, and there are fears that the boyhood Liverpool fan's head has been turned.

However, Liverpool correspondent David Lynch has recently claimed that the deal is not dead, saying: "On Anthony Gordon, I think that’s one that has a real chance of being revived maybe later in the window."

Of course, £100m claims mean that signing the Newcastle man would come with a larger figure than that paid for club-record signing Darwin Nunez, who signed from Benfica in a deal rising to £85m two years ago, but Gordon's trajectory points toward it being worth the stress.

Anthony Gordon's 23/24 season in numbers

When the 2022/23 Premier League season reached its conclusion, Gordon probably hadn't done enough to convince Newcastle supporters that he was worth the £45m figure that had been paid to Everton for his services five months earlier.

Anthony Gordon for Everton

Across 16 outings for the Toon, he failed to bring it all together and only opened his account on the final day of term, scoring in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Hindsight's a wonderful thing, and the seeds of success were there, simply unharnessed. One year on and England supporters across the country are calling for Gordon to be a starring figure in Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad after a tremendous campaign that saw him crowned United's Player of the Year.

Eddie Howe's outfit were plagued by injuries after previously qualifying for the Champions League, meaning that they will be limited to domestic action next year – might that play into Liverpool's hands? – but Gordon shone throughout.

Across all competitions, the 23-year-old scored 12 goals and added 11 assists as his pace and potency down the left flank overwhelmed opponents and formed a deadly partnership with Alexander Isak, who is shaping into one of Europe's best effective centre-forwards.

Newcastle's Anthony Gordon

If Lynch is to be believed, the Merseysiders might just make an official approach to sign Gordon later down the line, with FSG bosses already suggesting that August will be the time to do business at Anfield.

The Reds are well stocked but are always seeking ways to improve, and Gordon might even prove to be an upgrade on the in-form Cody Gakpo.

Why Anthony Gordon could be a Cody Gakpo upgrade

Gakpo was one of the standout performers at this summer's European Championship and, after his strong finish to the 2023/24 campaign with Liverpool, will be determined to rise in prominence under Slot's tutelage.

He bagged five goals and three assists over the final three months of the top-flight term despite only receiving seven starts, and thus will be eager to play a big part this year, competent out wide and up front.

But Gordon, an out-and-out winger, is a "menace" of a player – as said by journalist Antonio Mango – with electric speed and fear-inducing motions. As you will see below, he outperformed his Dutch counterpart across almost every metric in the Premier League last year.

Gakpo might be the naturally better finisher but Gordon's pace and playmaking quality allows him to wreak havoc from a wide range of avenues – moreover, he's crisper in possession and more active in the duel.

There is a good claim that Gakpo, who was pigeonholed in a number of positions under Jurgen Klopp last year, would raise his game considerably under a coach such as Slot who would assign him a singular purpose, enhancing performance, enriching fluency.

But praised for his "fearless" presence on the pitch by Tyneside icon Alan Shearer, Gordon would bring the whole gamut to Slot's door, and he truly could prove to be a masterful addition to a talented squad. Luis Diaz also exists, a key member of the team, but Gordon, should he carry his form into the new campaign, could prove to trump the lot.

Therefore, Liverpool would only score a major win by bringing Gordon back to his home city. While suggestions of a £100m figure would likely dissuade FSG from acting, the summer market may yet see a number of changes that could leave Liverpool free to make their move.

Gordon, as Lynch puts it, would jump at the chance to join the club.

"Top, top player" doesn’t want to sign for any other club except Arsenal

A highly-regarded player has made his transfer preference crystal clear, and will not sign for any other club except Arsenal this summer.

Who Arsenal could sign next after Riccardo Calafiori

Manager Mikel Arteta has little time remaining before the new Premier League season kicks off, as the Spaniard seeks to beat Man City to a title at the third successive attempt.

Arsenal's 30-cap international agrees to join new club with deal imminent

The Gunners are close to agreeing another exit.

The Gunners fell narrowly short last term, pushing City all the way to the final day, and Arsenal may just be three or four players shy of going that one step further. Sporting director Edu Gaspar and the wider recruitment team haven't been too busy this window, with the north Londoners making just two major signings in David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori.

The latter, who joined from Bologna in an initial £34 million deal, comes in to bolster Arteta's defensive ranks after an excellent 23/24 campaign for Bologna and standout performances for Italy at Euro 2024.

Summer deadline day is just weeks away, though, so rumours have circulated in regard to who could be next through the door. It is believed Arsenal are keen to sign a new forward, with the likes of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres and Wolves' Pedro Neto all players who've been linked with moves to Arsenal.

Meanwhile, a new midfielder seems the most possible next deal for Edu and co, with Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino heavily linked. The 28-year-old, fresh off the back of an impressive Euros campaign for eventual champions Spain, is firmly on the agenda at Arsenal as his contract ticks down to expiry in 2025.

Mikel Merino only wants to join Arsenal this summer

Arsenal have been in talks over signing Merino for a while now, with journalist Steve Kay sharing an update to KS1TV (via TBR).

It is believed Merino doesn't want to join any other club except Arsenal, and the deal is on the verge of being done for around £25 million.

"My information is that this is on the verge of being done. Personal terms are agreed, a deal of around €30m (£25m)," said Kay. “The clubs have agreed. Merino doesn’t want to sign for anyone else. He’s not signing a new contract.

“From what I’m hearing it’s the total opposite of what other publications have come out with because as far as I know this will be done in the next couple of days.”

The Sociedad star scored eight goals and registered five assists in 45 appearances across all competitions last season, so £25 million could be considered a bit of a steal in this market, especially considering his glowing reputation.

"I think that tournament [Euro 2024] was a good reflection of him," said Miguel Flaño, a former Osasuna team-mate, to Sky Sports.

"He is used to starting games and being very important for his club. But his role at the European Championship was something different. Although he wasn't a starter, he showed a lot of humility, understanding he could still be important in another way.

"And as we saw, he was decisive, most of all with his goal against Germany but also in the games when he didn't score. He just puts the team first and thinks about how he can help."

Another ex-Osasuna player, Alfredo Sanchez, also called Merino a "top, top player".

England’s men’s team will make their first visit to Pakistan in 16 years when they play two T20Is in Karachi on October 14 and 15, 2021.As reported by ESPNcricinfo earlier this week, England’s plans for a short stop-over in January had to be shelved due to a lack of space in a crowded itinerary, with England also due to tour Sri Lanka and India in the first months of 2021, and with several players committed to T20I franchise deals during the same period. But following talks between the ECB and PCB, it has now been agreed that England will fit in the visit as part of their preparations for the T20 World Cup in India next year. The squad will arrive in Karachi on October 12, and both teams will depart for India on October 16 for the start of a tournament that is expected to culminate in mid-November.England last toured Pakistan in 2005 when they played three Tests and five ODIs. The subsequent series between the two sides in 2012 and 2015 were played in the United Arab Emirates.Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive, said: “It’s a real pleasure to announce that the England men’s IT20 squad will be playing in Pakistan in October 2021. This will be the first time since 2005 that an England team has toured Pakistan and as such it represents a significant moment for both nations.”As was demonstrated this summer, we have a strong relationship with PCB and ECB is delighted to be able to play our part in ensuring the safe return of international cricket to this wonderful nation of passionate cricket fans.”As always, the safety and welfare of our players and staff will be paramount. We are working closely with the PCB to ensure all the necessary plans are in place, especially concerning the anticipated levels of security around the team, the proposed travel protocols and of course the situation regarding the fast-moving and ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic.”The two-match series will serve as ideal preparation for the England team leading into an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup taking place in India during October and November 2021.”England had already been scheduled to play a Test series in Pakistan in late 2022, but the PCB had expressed their desire for a visit sooner than that to show the ECB’s support for the return of international cricket to the country. With Pakistan’s players having endured less than perfect conditions in helping England fulfil their international fixtures in 2020, there was a sense that the ECB owed Pakistan a reciprocal favour. The ECB subsequently confirmed that a white-ball tour of Bangladesh in the same period is expected to go ahead as planned.Wasim Khan, PCB Chief Executive, added: “I am delighted to confirm that England will be touring Pakistan to play two T20s in October 2021. This will be their first visit to Pakistan for 16 years and will open the door for both Test and White Ball tours in the 2022-23 season.”The full-strength England squad will arrive at the back-end of our home white-ball series against New Zealand. We also expect Australia to visit Pakistan for their FTP commitment in early 2022, with England returning for both Test and White Ball tours in the 2022-23 season.”The October 2021 T20Is will allow the leading England cricketers to access and examine the world-class arrangements we will put together, which will give them further encouragement and confidence to not only return in 2022-23 but also express their interest in the Pakistan Super League, which has grown to become one of the top leagues in the world.”England’s visit to Pakistan for the 14 and 15 October 2021 T20Is will provide further lift to our passionate fans, both in Pakistan and across the globe. The nation has waited patiently for cricket to return sustainably to Pakistan and the 2021 tours by South Africa, New Zealand and England will only ensure international cricket is played uninterruptedly.”The enhanced progress made over the last two years has been down to nurturing relationships with various cricket boards and international players, as well as building trust and confidence.”The ECB’s confirmation further endorses Pakistan as safe and secure. Importantly, this announcement speaks volumes for the relationship that we have with the ECB and I would like to thank the ECB for their strong will and desire to make this short tour a reality.”England’s visit in 2021 is an outcome of the PCB’s efforts and hard work to ensure Pakistan cricket continues to move in the right direction.”

The "outstanding" young Norwich star who could be Jonny Rowe 2.0

Norwich City's 2023/24 campaign ultimately ended in disappointment last month as they were hammered 4-0 by Leeds United in the second leg of their play-off semi-final.

The Canaries had finished sixth in the Championship during the regular season but failed to step up to the mark in the play-offs, as they went goalless in their two-legged clash with former head coach Daniel Farke.

Shortly after their capitulation at Elland Road in May, sporting director Ben Knapper decided to pull the trigger on manager David Wagner, who was relieved of his duties after just shy of a year-and-a-half in the role.

The Yellows chief then scoured the globe to find a replacement for the German boss and opted to bring in Danish head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup from FC Nordsjaelland.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the appointment is his commitment to playing and developing young talent. Per Transfer Room's 'Trust in Youth rating', no boss in Europe trusted young players more than him, with the likes of Liverpool's Arne Slot and Bayern Munich's Vincent Kompany also within the top ten.

This will be music to the ears of Canaries fans who want to see more faith placed in up-and-coming stars so that the next Jonathan Rowe, who was one of the stars of the season just gone, can be unearthed.

Jonny Rowe's breakthrough season with Norwich

The young winger, who worked his way up through the ranks at Colney, made his first-team debut in the Premier League under Dean Smith during the 2021/22 campaign.

He went on to make 13 appearances as a substitute and contributed with one assist as his side were relegated from the top-flight under the English boss, who had replaced Daniel Farke in the dugout that term.

His emergence in the senior side came after his fantastic return of 11 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances for the U21s, and 12 goals and three assists in 31 games for the U18s in the academy.

Rowe's progress was, unfortunately, stunted by injuries during the 2022/23 campaign under Smith and David Wagner, who arrived in January 2023, as he was restricted to three league appearances.

He battled back from his injury woes to fulfill his potential in the second tier in the season just gone under Wagner, as he showcased his ability to make a big impact in the final third on a regular basis.

As you can see in the table above, Rowe chipped in with more than one goal contribution every other start on average, with 14 in 25 starts in the Championship.

His efficiency in the final third was particularly impressive as the 21-year-old dynamo scored 12 times from 5.76 xG, an overperformance of 6.24 – higher than any other player within the Canaries squad, with Gabriel Sara's overperformance of 5.55 (13 from 7.45 xG) the next best.

Thorup could now find Norwich's next breakthrough starlet on the flanks by unleashing Abu Kamara in the 2024/25 campaign, after his impressive year out on loan with Portsmouth.

Abu Kamara's academy form for Norwich

The versatile forward has been with the club since the age of ten and progressed up through the youth ranks over the years, just like Rowe did before his emergence.

Kamara showed glimpses of his goalscoring prowess at U18 level for the Canaries with a return of 12 goals and three assists in 30 outings as a centre-forward or second striker.

His form earned him a step up to the U21s and the left-footed star was then exposed to a multitude of positions; attacking midfield, right wing, left wing, second striker, and centre-forward.

He racked up an outstanding 31 goals and seven assists in just 50 matches for the U21s, which was remarkable consistency for a player who did not have a settled role.

As you can see in the table above, Kamara thrived in front of goal in pretty much every position the club utilised him in, which then led to a loan move to Portsmouth for the 2023/24 campaign.

Why Johannes Hoff Thorup must unleash Abu Kamara

Thorup must now bring the 20-year-old wizard into the first-team picture at Carrow Road next term after his fantastic season on loan with Pompey.

The left-footed magician finally nailed down an established position as the majority of his appearances for the League One side came on the right flank, cutting inside onto his favoured foot.

Kamara enjoyed a brilliant first year of regular first-team football with John Mousinho's side as he racked up a return of ten goals and 11 assists in all competitions – only Sara (14 goals, 13 assists) registered more goals and assists combined with the Norwich squad.

As you can see in the table above, 18 of his goal contributions came in his 37 starts in League One as Portsmouth were promoted back to the Championship.

He ranked incredibly highly among his positional peers in a host of key attacking metrics, which speaks to how much of a standout performer the young magician was in the division, particularly as a creative talent.

The Canaries academy graduate consistently found himself receiving the ball in the opposition's box and his end product shows that he was rarely wasteful with his touches in front of goal, and that bodes well for a potential step up in quality to the second tier.

There could now be a spot for Kamara, who was hailed as "outstanding" by Pompey coach Jon Harley, in the Norwich side next term as Rowe has been linked with a possible move to Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That could open up a spot on the right wing for the England U20 international, who could line up on the right side of Thorup's preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Borja Sainz on the opposite flank and Josh Sargent leading the line as the lone centre-forward.

His exceptional form in League One suggests that the potential is there for him to make the step up to Championship level as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a wide position, but it is now down to him to prove himself at a higher level on a consistent basis.

This is why he could be the next academy star up for the Yellows and follow in Rowe's footsteps next term, if Thorup provides him with enough opportunities on the pitch at Carrow Road.
