West Ham open talks for £150k-p/w "beast" who’d thrive with Smith Rowe

West Ham United have been in fine form once again this season and are currently ensconced in sixth place in the Premier League after 20 matches, above the likes of Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea and Newcastle United.

There are certain grumblings around David Moyes' cautious tactical approach, but then the proof is in the pudding and the Scottish manager has brought prosperity to east London during his tenure.

Now, he's looking to bolster at the term's midpoint, providing the squad with fresh tools to sculpt success over the business end.

West Ham eyeing Premier League stars

According to a recent report from the Guardian, West Ham are interested in securing loan deals for two Premier League players this month, with Arsenal's Emile Smith Rowe and Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips both on the radar.

£13m forward also expected to join West Ham amid talks for Kalvin Phillips

He’s pretty likely to arrive.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 19, 2024

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Gunners are reluctant to let their creative midfielder go despite his limited match action over the past 18 months. Still, Phillips, seeking an exit from a lacklustre and peripheral spell at the Etihad Stadium, could be a viable option to strengthen the engine room., with talks having already been held over a deal for the ex-Leeds United man.

City would entertain a loan move at this stage but would demand a £6m fee; whether Irons chairman David Sullivan grants such an outlay will likely become clearer in the coming days.

How Kalvin Phillips would fit in at West Ham

City signed Phillips from Leeds for £45m in 2022 after serving as the centrepiece in the Whites' promotion from the Championship and subsequent success in the Premier League, with journalist Josh Bunting hailing him as a "Rolls-Royce” midfielder.

His time in Manchester hasn't worked out, starting just twice in the Premier League to date and failing to cement a starting berth with any kind of regularity.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Nonetheless, he's an immensely talented player with a wealth of experience in the top-flight and the fact that England manager Gareth Southgate still picks him for international duty bespeaks his worth and application.

As per FBref, the £150k-per-week star ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and passes attempted, the top 8% for shots taken, the top 11% for clearances and the top 18% for aerial wins per 90.

With such a diverse range of standout qualities, Phillips might be the perfect player to gel with Smith Rowe, who is a bundle of creative energy and has a gliding gait that makes him a valuable offensive asset for his side, stretching teams and splitting the lines – even hailed by pundit Jamie Carragher as the "the best player in the Premier League running [with] the ball".

While he has been on the fringe since the start of last season, the £40k-per-week Arsenal star has showcased his talents in the Premier League before, bagging ten goals and two assists from just 21 starts during the 2021/22 campaign, complementing this return with an 87% pass completion and succeeding in 60% of his dribbles.

With Phillips behind him, plugging away with his crisp and intelligent passing while showing his “beast” presence in the centre of the park, as has been said by Nigel de Jong, the duo could provide the balance of tenacity and elegance to charge the Hammers' exploits over the coming months.

Alastair Cook comeback 'a possibility' – Ryan ten Doeschate

Essex captain says ‘there’s no reason’ Cook couldn’t return for England

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Mar-2019Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate has not ruled out the prospect of losing Alastair Cook to an England comeback at some stage.Former England captain Cook, who scored an unbeaten 150 this week playing for Essex in a pre-season game against Cambridge University, retired from international cricket last September with a knock of 147 in the fifth Test against India at The Oval. He made 161 Test appearances, scoring 12,472 runs, both England records. He received a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year Honours list before recording his 64th first-class ton against Cambridge in his first outing on home soil since retiring.”It is a possibility,” ten Doeschate told talkSPORT2 when speaking about the prospect of Cook making a return for England.”Just speaking to him and gauging where he’s at, I would say it’s unlikely, but I know how much he does love England cricket and how much work he’s put in there so no, I wouldn’t rule it out in times of desperation and if he was playing really well and he felt the desire was there, I guess there’s no reason why he couldn’t make a comeback.”In the meantime, ten Doeschate was delighted to have Cook’s services at Essex.”Obviously he’s a fantastic cricketer, but the things he brings away from cricket are just as important,” ten Doeschate said. “His work ethic, the desire he has for the game and the desire he has to pass on his knowledge is an absolute treasure chest for us.”He could really strengthen what’s been a slightly under-achieving batting line-up for us in the past few years and if he can drag a few guys along with him, we’ve definitely got the bowlers to do very well in this Championship.”Essex defeated Cambridge by 286 runs in their three-day match. They open their County Championship season at Hampshire on April 5.

Arsenal send scouts to watch forward Ibrahim Salah ahead of possible move

Arsenal have deployed chiefs to assess the performance of a new forward overseas, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

Arsenal transfer targets

Ahead of January, Edu Gaspar and Mikel Arteta appear to be looking to strengthen all areas of the pitch, with recent claims suggesting that the club are currently in pole position to sign Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio.

In midfield, Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz has been a long-term target of the hierarchy, though with Unai Emery’s side standing firm on their stance that their prized asset is not for sale during the upcoming transfer window, chiefs might have to be more patient with that particular deal.

The Gunners are additionally keen to increase their options in the final third and have highlighted Rennes’ left-winger Ibrahim Salah as a potential candidate, with the attacker having made 30 appearances since joining from KAA Gent back in January (Transfermarkt – Salah statistics).

The Morocco youth international, who is 22 years of age, still has just under four years remaining on his deal (Rennes contracts), but that hasn’t stopped the manager and sporting director from wanting to take a bite at the cherry in the hope of bringing him to the Premier League, in particular to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal monitoring Salah

According to Moroccan outlet Le360 Sport (via Sport Witness), Arsenal have sent scouts to watch Salah ahead of January. The North London outfit “would be interested” in signing the forward next month because they have already “sent emissaries” to keep tabs on him “during a recent appearance” as they weigh up approaching Rennes.

Rennes forward Ibrahim Salah.

Salah is a real threat in the final third

Across all competitions this season, Salah has scored six goals from a total of 16 appearances, showing the positive impact that he can make in the opposition’s box, and he’s constantly posing a threat regardless of whether the end product comes to fruition.

Standing at 6 foot 1, the colossus currently ranks in the 94th percentile for shots and the 92nd percentile for successful take-ons, highlighting how much he loves to use his athletic pace to dribble past his marker and create as many chances as possible for both himself and his fellow teammates (FBRef – Salah statistics).

Arteta’s target is even a versatile operator having been deployed in five different positions over the grass since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and even on the left side of the midfield, though he has been described as an “inside forward” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Having been crowned U23s Africa Cup Winner with Morocco, Salah will possess a winning mentality and will know what it takes to compete and be successful at a high level, so there’s no doubt that he could be a great addition should he put pen to paper at Arsenal.

Explained: Why Cole Palmer isn't playing against Arsenal and when he could return for Chelsea

Cole Palmer has not been included in Chelsea's matchday squad to face Arsenal despite playing in their FA Cup loss to Manchester City at the weekend.

  • Arsenal host Chelsea in Premier League
  • Palmer played in FA Cup loss to Man City
  • But not included in squad to face Gunners
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The England international completed 90 minutes on Saturday as the Blues lost 1-0 to City in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley. However, he is not on Chelsea's bench for Tuesday night's trip to the Emirates – let alone in the starting lineup. So why is he not featuring in this London derby?

    THE EXPLANATION

On Monday, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed the 21-year-old had been suffering from illness since that match. That has kept him out of team training, with the Argentine admitting he would make a late call over the former City youngster. Now, it has become clear Chelsea's top scorer, who has bagged 20 league goals this season, has not recovered in time for the encounter.

  • WHAT MAURICIO POCHETTINO SAID

On Monday, the former Tottenham boss said on Palmer: "We need to assess tomorrow (Tuesday) morning but today I don’t believe he can be involved. We need to assess tomorrow and then decide. Even if he is feeling better tomorrow, maybe he is not in a condition to play. We hope he recovers from this situation and can be involved again as soon as possible. With or without Cole we always believe we can win. The most important thing is the team and the collective. He is an important part of the team and is doing fantastic for us, but we are Chelsea and we have plenty of players that can perform and do the job."

    THE BIG PICTURE

In a season that promised so much but delivered so little, Palmer has been one of the few positives at Stamford Bridge. The £42.5 million ($53m) recruit from City has scored 23 goals and bagged 13 assists in all competitions and without him they would be nowhere near trying to qualify for Europe. In truth, they would have been closer to the relegation zone than the top seven. Therefore, his presence may be sorely missed against Premier League title hopefuls Arsenal.

Roshen Silva innings shows Test mindset, says Dimuth Karunaratne

On a big-turning pitch such as this, Roshen Silva has shown he has what it takes to succeed. So said team-mate Dimuth Karunaratne, whose 63 was second only to the immense 85 off 174 deliveries that Roshen produced on day two, which pushed Sri Lanka 46 runs beyond England’s first-innings total of 290.Silva had battled through a tough period after lunch, seeing out a testing spell from legspinner Adil Rashid, before settling into a rhythm of picking up runs into the outfield. Unlike several other batsmen, Silva did not sweep, choosing instead to score his runs via the cut, pull, drive as well as flicks off his pads. He backed his strengths, Karunaratne added, and settled on a method that worked for him, as he had done during last year’s Test in Delhi where he scored 74 not out helping Sri Lanka save that match.”Roshen is a good player of spin, and we saw that in Delhi where he played well against Jadeja and Ashwin,” Karunaratne said. “He has one or two options and that he can use them his advantage. On a turner like this he can take the option of rotating the strike, instead of going for big shots.”When Roshen bats and he rotates the strike like that, it’s difficult for a bowler to bowl on one spot. When Akila Dananjaya and Roshen were batting, England found it difficult to bowl. That is the importance of having a player like Roshen.”Roshen Silva pulls through the leg side•Associated Press

The pair had played together as teenagers for St. Joseph’s College in Colombo, and Karunaratne added that Silva’s methods had not changed much since those days. “His success from school until now – and for him to perform well in domestic cricket also – is because he has a good mindset,” he said.Silva was especially impressive in partnership with the tail, which had bailed Sri Lanka out of a precarious situation. With Nos. 9, 10 and 11, he put on partnerships worth 41, 56 and 28 respectively, placing Sri Lanka in a position of some strength when they had seemed likely to concede a significant first-innings lead. England had to bat out one over at the end of the day, and went to stumps unscathed.”Getting a lead of 46 is a big advantage to us against their spinners when it comes to the fourth innings,” Karunaratne said. “Tomorrow if we can get a couple of wickets before they erase the deficit, we will be in a good position, so that is our plan. We have to reduce their boundary options and allow them to score only singles because they scored in boundaries in fours and sixes in the first innings. That is what they did to overcome the spin. They are going for big shots, and we are trying to play with their patience.”Karunaratne’s own innings came to an end via a run-out, with Ben Stokes swooping in from cover to throw down the stumps at the strikers’ end, after Dhananjaya de Silva had called for a quick single. The pair had put on 96 together and seemed to be well set for big innings, but that dismissal set in motion a mini-collapse that would cost Sri Lanka four wickets for 38 runs.”At that time me and Dhananjaya batted really well, and they had no clue how to get a wicket. We didn’t want to give a wicket away but it happened. Dhananjaya was getting close to a fifty, and i wanted to give him one, so that’s why I ran. Next time we will study the fielder before taking that run. Ben Stokes has a strong arm, so we’ll be cautious.”

Siriwardene's allround performance knocks Bangladesh out

The veteran allrounder batted through till the end of the innings in a low-scoring innings, and bowled economically as Bangladesh played meekly in their chase

Varun Shetty14-Nov-2018Sri Lanka kept their semi-final prospects alive in Group A with a comprehensive win over Bangladesh that they would not have counted on at the halfway mark. Put into bat, they managed only 97 from their 20 overs, thanks mostly to former captain Shashikala Siriwardene’s 31. The allrounder batted until the last over of an innings that never found momentum, and returned figures of 4-0-10-2 as Asia Cup winners Bangladesh surrendered early in the chase against their regional rivals. It was Jahanara Alam who had given them a strong chance once again. The seamer managed to utilise the conditions right from the first ball, getting an outswinger to curve back at Yasoda Mendis’ toes and roll onto leg stump. This made it appear like the strategy to not open with Chamari Atapattu would not make much of a difference. But Sri Lanka chose to promote wicketkeeper Dilani Manodara to No. 3.But Alam and the spinners gave away nothing to her or to makeshift opener Hasini Perera, and the Powerplay score of 17 for 1 wasn’t wildly different from what they’d managed against South Africa two days ago. And the batting experiment looked even worse as Sri Lanka fell to 30 for 3 in nine overs, that third wicket a complete mess with Manodara and Atapattu at the same end as Bangladesh got rid of the former at the other.Atapattu and Siriwardene pushed the pace over the next two overs, but with the captain’s top edge and dismissal in the 13th over, another experiment had failed. With the big hitters all gone early, Siriwardene was left with the lower middle-order, using her experience to manoeuvre the gaps on an outfield that was still reeling under the effects of rain that has affected the entire week. She hit two fours and a six, most of which came late in her innings, and fell with two balls to go. Alam, once again, cut short any momentum Siriwardene wanted to provide, and followed it up with her third wicket to stop Sri Lanka from getting to three figures. At the toss, Sri Lanka had wanted 120, and Bangladesh had wanted to restrict them to 120; but Sri Lanka fell 23 short of their target and Bangladesh fell 25 short of that. Such was the shock from left-arm seamer Udeshika Prabodhani’s two wickets in the first over, that Bangladesh looked like they had decided not to attempt any attacking shots. It was the chase of an inexperienced side, and that was visible with the first ball. Sanjida Islam received a poor decision from umpire Jacqueline Williams, being struck well outside off stump, but Ayasha Rahman was not alive to the situation and the review was not taken.Three balls later, Fargana Hoque did review, but her 50-50 lbw decision was deemed umpire’s call, the tracker showing the ball brushing leg stump. Prabodhani continued tormenting them with inswingers, but went off in the fifth over when she dropped a return catch and seemingly split the webbing between middle and ring finger. They wouldn’t need her though. The Sri Lanka spinners took charge, using the wind to drift the ball menacingly away, lobbing it slower and slower at the batsmen. Most of them defended for the most part, two of them looked to drill it through the off side only to be caught at short extra cover, and the occasional slogs didn’t go too far on a sluggish pitch. At the halfway stage, Bangladesh hadn’t even made 30, and their lack of intent made it evident they weren’t getting anywhere close to the target. In all, they hit three boundaries, and played 75 dot balls, the kind of batting performance that fits with an early exit from a major tournament.

Harmanpreet, Rodrigues, spinners make it 4-0 for India

The India captain shared a 75-run third-wicket stand with Rodrigues to shore up the side, before Deepti, Poonam and Radha ripped through the opposition batting

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Sep-2018Getty ImagesIndia women wrapped up a dominant tour of Sri Lanka with a 51-run victory in the final T20I in Katunayake. The victory meant India won the series 4-0, with the second game in Colombo being washed out. They had also won the preceding three-match ODI series 2-1.Early on, the Sri Lanka bowlers validated their captain Chamari Atapattu’s decision to field first by dismissing both India openers, Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj, inside the first five overs to reduce them to 30 for 2. That left the onus on the in-form Jemimah Rodrigues, coming into the match on the back of successive half-centuries, to repair the innings, and she once again did the job, joining hands with captain Harmanpreet Kaur to put on 75 for the third wicket. However, once Sri Lanka found a way past the duo, with the wicket of Rodrigues for 46, the end was swift as India lost their last eight wickets for 51 runs. Harmanpreet was the eighth batsman dismissed, for 63 off 38 balls – an innings that contained three fours and five sixes. As was the case when Sri Lanka batted, spinners did the bulk of the damage, with the offspinning duo of Shashikala Siriwardene and Inoshi Priyadarshini snaring three wickets each.Sri Lanka lost Atapattu on the fourth ball of their chase and never quite recovered. Anushka Sanjeewani (29), Siriwardene (22) and Oshadi Ranasinghe (22) got the starts, but Sri Lanka needed them to stay on and steer the chase. The hosts also did not help themselves with three run-outs, including that of Priyadarshini, who was the last batsman dismissed as Sri Lanka crashed to 105 all out. Poonam Yadav was the most successful bowler, picking up 3 for 18 in four overs. Deepti Sharma, who opened the bowling, and Radha Yadav grabbed two wickets each from their respective three overs.

Aston Villa keen on signing "scintillating" EFL player for Emery

After getting off to a blistering start in the Premier League this season, Aston Villa will be looking to cause plenty more shocks after the international break. Unai Emery's side currently sit fifth, just four points adrift of table-toppers Tottenham Hotspur. The greatest credit that can be given to Emery and his side, is that their start hasn't been a major surprise – it always seemed likely that we'd be talking about the Midlands club as ones to watch.

The Villans could yet get even better, too, whether that comes through the January transfer window, or next summer, when they could be in a stronger position than ever to land some key targets, including one particular Championship star.

What's the latest Aston Villa transfer news?

Much of the credit for Villa's strong start this season should go to their recruitment team, who once again worked wonders to help land the likes of Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres in the summer. By the end of the deadline, they had spent a reported €93m (£80m), and ever since then, they have not looked back, with their spending more than paying off.

Now, Villa could be set to spend even more money, with the latest Jonathan Rowe transfer news reporting that the Premier League side are interested in the Norwich City wide player. According to TeamTalk, Villa, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Burnley, and Sheffield United are all interested in making a move for Rowe, who the Canaries are keen to secure on a long-term contract.

When the January transfer window comes around, as well as the summer window, Rowe will certainly be one to keep an eye on, especially if Norwich fail to secure promotion from the Championship, and Aston Villa come calling. Rowe's agent is also the same as Jacob Ramsey's, so the club could have a route into negotiations on the player's side too.

How has Jonathan Rowe performed this season?

To say that Rowe, who can play on either flank, has got off to an impressive start for Norwich this season would be an understatement. Rowe's goals and assists have stolen the headlines, as he has scored seven times and provided two more in 13 games in all competitions. Add in the fact that he's still just 20-years-old, and you begin to realise just how much potential he has to become a top player, whether that be at Norwich, or a club like Villa.

That form has seen him earn plenty of praise, too, including from Carlton Palmer, who told Football League World: "Norwich City sit joint-fourth in the Championship on 16 points, representing a very decent start to the season.

"One player making a lot of noise is Jonathan Rowe, Norwich's 20-year-old winger has scored five goals in nine appearances and was named EFL Young Player of the Month in August. Rowe is a product of Norwich's academy and his scintillating form has seen him earn a call-up to England's under-20 squad.

"If he can keep producing performances like he's doing then he's going to become a very hot commodity. He could be worth upwards of £20m, I'd definitely put him in the same category as Gnonto at Leeds United."
