Lopetegui wants "strong" £15m ace who West Ham may sign as early as January

Already looking ahead to the January transfer window, Julen Lopetegui now reportedly personally wants West Ham United to sign an exciting young attacking reinforcement for his side.

West Ham transfer news

Those at the London Stadium were far from shy when it came to splashing the cash in the summer transfer window, with the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Max Kilman and Niclas Fullkrug all arriving among several others to hand Lopetegui an instant boost at the start of his tenure. Not long into that tenure, however, and the Spaniard is already struggling to get results, with five points in six games summing things up.

They once again failed to secure three points last time out too, with Bryan Mbuemo’s early goal forcing West Ham to come from behind to earn a point against Brentford.

A start which could force a rethink, West Ham may yet turn back towards the transfer market when January arrives to solve any early issues within Lopetegui’s side once and for all.

According to reports in Spain, Lopetegui now personally wants West Ham to sign Adam Hlozek from Hoffenheim in a deal that could take place as early as the January transfer window. The Bundesliga side reportedly value their forward at €18m (£15m) in a price tag that the Hammers should have no issues matching when the time comes.

Just 22 years old, Hlozek represents a long-term option who could swiftly replace Fullkrug, given that the German is already 31 years old and more of a stop-gap than a permanent solution for West Ham’s attacking problems this season. At such a cheap price, Hlozek will undoubtedly be one to watch if West Ham decide to grant Lopetegui’s wish in the winter window.

"Strong" Hlozek can solve West Ham problem

Without a goal in his first four appearances, Fullkrug’s slow start at West Ham has left the door ajar for the likes of Hlozek to potentially arrive and instantly solve Lopetegui’s attacking problem. The Hoffenheim star only just arrived at his new club in the summer, but has impressed enough to attract the attention of the London side in what would be his biggest move yet.

Unlike Fullkrug, the Czech has picked up where he left off last season to score three goals in his first six games for his new club in an impressive run that could only get better and better in the Bundesliga. Over the last 365 days, he ranks in the 98th percentile for shots per 90 and the 88th percentile for goals per 90 – compared with other strikers in similar leagues (FBRef).

A player who’s always earned plenty of praise for his all action style, Hlozek was described as “strong” by former coach Zdenek Scasny, who previously said via the Bundesliga’s official website: “In training, he looks as strong as in a match. He’s an extraordinary talent who doesn’t play just because he is 16, but because he has earned it.”

Years on now and that praise still rings true for a forward who is beginning to find his most clinical form in front of goal just as clubs like West Ham begin to look his way.

'I am not a racist' – Quinton de Kock apologises, will take the knee

Quinton de Kock has apologised to his team-mates and fans for the “hurt, confusion, and anger” he caused by refusing to follow a CSA directive to take the knee at the T20 World Cup and sitting out the game against West Indies. In a statement, released on Thursday morning, de Kock explained his decision not to take the knee on Tuesday was a response to feeling “like my rights were taken away when I was told what we had to do in the way that we were told,” by the CSA board. However, after an “emotional” conversation between the board and the players last night, he has a “better understanding of their intentions” and “will love nothing more than to play cricket for my country again.”That means de Kock has made himself available for selection for the rest of the tournament, which for South Africa, resumes on Saturday against Sri Lanka. He recognised that he has dominated the cricket conversation in the last 48 hours, although he said that was unintentional. “I never ever wanted to make this a Quinton issue” de Kock’s statement read. “I understand the importance of standing against racism, and I also understand the responsibility of us as players to set an example. If me taking a knee helps to educate others, and makes the lives of others better, I am more than happy to do so.”De Kock was the only player in the South African squad who had previously chosen not to make any gesture in support of antiracism and said that that was because he “didn’t understand why I had to prove it (his feelings on antiracism) with a gesture, when I live and learn and love people from all walks of life every day,” he said.Related

De Kock explained his own journey in understanding the complexities of race in South Africa by making a reference to his family. “I was quiet on this very important issue until now. But I feel I have to explain myself a little bit. For those who don’t know, I come from a mixed race family. My half-sisters are Coloured and my step mom is Black. For me, Black lives have mattered since I was born. Not just because there was an international movement. The rights and equality of all people is more important than any individual. I was raised to understand that we all have rights, and they are important.”For that reason, de Kock felt his own rights were being eclipsed by the CSA board, even though he recognised that he acts as a role model. “I know I have an example to set. We were previously told we had the choice to do what we felt we wanted to do,” he said. “When you are told what to do, with no discussion, I felt like it takes away the meaning. If I was racist, I could easily have taken the knee and lied, which is wrong and doesn’t build a better society.”South Africa entered the T20 World Cup and toured West Indies, giving players a choice between taking a knee, raising a fist and standing to attention. But, when the CSA board saw the images of the teams’ different postures at their opening game against Australia, they opted to intervene and make it mandatory for the entire team to take a knee. The South African squad were informed of the board’s decision five hours before the game and de Kock, during the bus ride from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, decided he would not comply.”I won’t lie, I was shocked that we were told on the way to an important match that there was an instruction that we had to follow, with a perceived “or else.” I don’t think I was the only one,” de Kock’s statement said. “We had camps. We had sessions. We had zoom meetings. We know where we all stand. And that is together. I think it would of (sic) been better for everyone concerned if we had sorted this out before the tournament started. Then we could have focused on our job, to win cricket matches for our country.”He also criticised CSA for adding to the burden the players carry when they enter major tournaments. “There always seems to be a drama when we go to World Cups. That isn’t fair.”However, in hindsight, de Kock realised that opting out of the match put his team and the opposition in a difficult position. “I did not, in any way, mean to disrespect anyone by not playing against West Indies, especially the West Indian team themselves. Maybe some people don’t understand that we were just hit with this on Tuesday morning, on the way to a game. I am deeply sorry for all the hurt, confusion and anger that I have caused,” he said.In the aftermath, the perception of de Kock as not standing for antiracism, hurt him.”I’ve been called a lot of things as a cricketer. Doff. (Dumb) Stupid. Selfish. Immature. But those didn’t hurt. Being called a racist because of a misunderstanding hurts me deeply,” he said. “It hurts my family. It hurts my pregnant wife. I am not a racist. In my heart of hearts, I know that. And I think those who know me know that.”In an acknowledgement of his own struggles to express himself de Kock thanked his team-mates, specifically captain Temba Bavuma, and committed to their collective cause.”I love every one of my teammates, and I love nothing more than playing cricket for South Africa” – Quinton de Kock•AFP/Getty Images

“I know I’m not great with words, but I’ve tried my best to explain how truly sorry I am for making like this is about me. It is not,” de Kock said. “I love every one of my teammates, and I love nothing more than playing cricket for South Africa. I just want to thank my teammates for their support, especially my captain, Temba. People might not recognise, but he is a flipping amazing leader. If he and the team, and South Africa, will have me, I would love nothing more than to play cricket for my country again.”CSA said it welcomed de Kock’s apology and his agreeing to take the knee, among other developments, while reiterating that “taking a united stand against racism is a moral issue, not a political issue”. The chairman of the CSA board and two directors had met with the South African team and management on Wednesday night, where the policy to take the knee was discussed.”Last night, the Cricket South Africa Board Chair and two directors met with the men’s Proteas team and management to discuss the Board’s directive regarding “taking the knee”. The Board representatives clarified the Board position and engaged with the issues raised by the players,” CSA said in a statement. “Following the meeting, the Proteas men’s team agreed to align and unify in taking the knee for the remaining fixtures of the World Cup campaign. CSA has also noted the statement issued by Quinton de Kock in which he too has agreed to take the knee and issued an apology.”Cricket South Africa welcomes all of these developments. They confirm Cricket South Africa’s commitment to non-racism. Taking a united stance against racism is a moral issue, not a political issue. The CSA Board regrets that the timing of its directive earlier this week may have been unsettling for the players in the lead-up to the match against the West Indies. The CSA is fully supportive of the Protea Men’s team and its captain Temba Bavuma and looks forward to continued successes by the Proteas at the World Cup.”

Root hopes Moeen can carry Hundred form and confidence into Tests

Captain says Hameed will take the opportunity with “both hands”, if he plays

Andrew Miller10-Aug-2021Joe Root, England’s captain, hopes that Moeen Ali can transform the confidence and fluency of his recent table-topping exploits with Birmingham Phoenix into the Test arena, as he prepares to make only his second Test appearance in two years, and his first on home soil since the 2019 Ashes.Moeen’s return to the Test team was confirmed by the ECB on Tuesday morning, and he looks set to slot straight into a line-up that was outplayed by India for large parts of last week’s drawn first Test at Trent Bridge, and which – in the ongoing absence of Ben Stokes – has had an ill-balanced look to it from the start of the summer against New Zealand.Related

Silverwood tells England batters around Root to 'step up'

Moeen recalled to England squad for second Test

England have chosen not to field a spinner in any of their three Tests to date this season, amid concerns about a batting line-up that has consistently misfired, with only two batters – Root himself and Rory Burns – so far mustering more than 150 runs across six completed innings. And while the circumstances of Moeen’s recall are far from ideal, given that his one-off Test appearance in Chennai in February was also his only first-class fixture since 2019, his confidence is currently sky-high following a series of match-winning performances in the Hundred, including a total of 108 runs from 54 balls in his last two visits to the crease, against Oval Invincibles and Welsh Fire this week. And Root hopes that that positive mindset will quickly translate to Test cricket.”Just to go out there and be Moeen Ali,” Root said of his returning team-mate. “He has the ability to go out there and win games with bat and ball, he’s proven that. He plays his best cricket when he is enjoying it and he’s full of confidence – it certainly looks that way at the moment, the way he has taken to the Hundred, the way he has led Birmingham Phoenix.”I would happily give him a huge amount of responsibility if he does play because he responds extremely well to that,” Root added. “He is a leader within the dressing room, a great personality, he drags people with him on the field and in the dressing room, so it will be great to have him back around.”The timing of Moeen’s call-up, however, begs a number of questions – not least given his impressive Test record against India, which includes a haul of 31 wickets at 22.22 in seven previous home Tests, including a Player-of-the-Match performance on his last recall to the team in 2018, when he helped to rescue England from 86 for 6 on the first morning, before sealing victory with nine wickets in the match.

Moeen also performed admirably in his only Test appearance in the past two years, as he bounced back from a bout of Covid-19 in Sri Lanka to claim eight wickets in the second Test against India, as well as blast a quickfire 43 from 18 balls from No. 9 in the final moments of England’s 317-run defeat. Thereafter, however, the circumstances of his departure from the tour clearly rankled – not least when Root himself erroneously stated that Moeen had “chosen” to go home, when in fact his absence had been agreed as part of the ECB’s rest-and-rotation policy.Root apologised at the time for his misrepresentation of the situation, but insisted he did not regret the circumstances of Moeen’s continued absence, given that his priorities, like so many others in England’s set-up, are currently split across formats in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup this winter.”We’ve tried to manage things as best we can over a period of time and I’ve always been a huge fan of Mo,” Root said. “I think he’s a wonderful cricketer across the formats, I think he’s a great ambassador for the game, and it’s wonderful to see him back in the Test arena, being back in a Test squad.”It was a brilliant performance he put in in Chennai and if he gets an opportunity, he’ll be desperate to impress and show everyone how good he is in Test cricket as well as white-ball cricket. He’s certainly a big contender. We haven’t been to the ground yet and we’ll look at conditions and weigh things up but he’s in a great position to play.”Moeen’s prospective comeback, coupled with the likely return to fitness of Ollie Pope, could mean wholesale changes to England’s batting line-up, with Haseeb Hameed also pushing for a return to the Test line-up, more than four years after the last of his three appearances, as a 19-year-old, on the 2016-17 tour of India. England also have concerns over Stuart Broad’s fitness, with the senior seamer sent for a scan after tweaking his right calf in training.Haseeb Hameed has already struck three first-class and one List A century this season•Getty Images

Should Hameed get the nod, it would mark a recall even more extraordinary than Moeen’s, given the depths to which his game slumped in the years after his progress was abruptly halted by a broken hand. He failed to make a first-class century in either of his next two seasons for Lancashire, including a grim campaign in 2018 when he averaged 9.44 with a top score of 31.However, a shift to Nottinghamshire has heralded a resurgence in form and fortune, with three Championship centuries at 51.13 this summer, as well as a maiden List A century against Warwickshire in the Royal London Cup. And with his technique and temperament back in alignment, Root believes the experiences he has been through will make him all the better prepared for a second shot at Test cricket.”More than anything, it takes a huge strength of character to be able to go through something like that and get yourself back into the position that he is in right now,” Root said. “Since the first day I met him I’ve been extremely impressed with him as a person, with his maturity as a young man then. I think that served him really well during a difficult spell in his career and now you’re seeing him come into some really good form.”We think of him physically maturing but I think his game has grown as well. He’s added shots to what is a very strong defence and has turned himself into a brilliant player. His work ethic is outstanding. He thinks about the game extremely well and it’s great to have had him in and around the squad this summer. If he gets an opportunity I’m sure he’ll look to take it with both hands and try to make the position his own in this team.”

In a frenetic start to Saturday's clash between Tottenham and Newcastle, Spurs opened the scoring through Dominic Solanke after just three minutes. But they were swiftly pegged back, within two minutes, as Anthony Gordon slid a calm finish beyond debutant Brandon Austin in goal, who is deputising for injured first-team stars Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster. However, Spurs protested vociferously as replays showed that in the build-up, Joelinton handled the ball as he intercepted a pass from Lucas Bergvall. Despite that, VAR allowed the goal to stand and the decision has now been explained.

Aston Villa’s "serious talent" is now worth 111% more since Emery took over

One of the most underrated academies in the Premier League currently is that of Aston Villa. Since the competition rebranded from the First Division in 1992, the Villans have produced some excellent players, including the competition’s all-time leading appearance maker, Gareth Barry.

Other players produced from Villa’s underrated academy include Jack Grealish, whose £100m move from the Villans to Manchester City was once a British transfer record, and Gary Cahill, a Champions League winner with Chelsea.

Aston Villa winger Jack Grealish.

Since Unai Emery took over managerial duties at Villa Park, he has nurtured some more homegrown talent, but one player, in particular, has stood out and has seen his value rise greatly in the time Emery has been in charge.

Jacob Ramsey’s value in the 2022/23 season

The player in question here is Jacob Ramsey. The 23-year-old midfielder is a boyhood Villan and was born locally to the club, in Birmingham. He made a rapid rise from the youth ranks to the first team and has since become a key player for his boyhood side.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

The former England under-21 international has particularly been making waves under Emery, with the Spaniard helping him to fine-tune his game and become the “serious talent” widely known today, as football scout Antonio Mango described him.

The former Arsenal boss took charge at Villa Park in October 2022. In November, a then 21-year-old Ramsey was valued at just £23.6m, according to Transfermarkt. He was still breaking through into the Villa first team, although previous manager Steven Gerrard had given him several opportunities.

However, when Emery took charge, the youngster really showed his class. In that first season under the Spanish tactician, the 2022/23 campaign, the Birmingham-born attacking midfielder played 24 times, scoring five times and grabbing seven assists.

Impressively, all five of those goals, along with six of the assists, came in the Premier League, a competition in which he made 22 appearances. That is his best return in a single top-flight season to date.

By the end of the season, the youngster’s value had shot up, and he was worth £27m as a result of his impressive performances.

Ramsey’s value in 2023/24

Sadly for Ramsey, the 2023/24 campaign was hampered by injury. The 23-year-old missed 27 games over 186 days with three different ailments last term. First, a foot injury kept him sidelined before he missed a short period with a hamstring issue, and then a toe injury which kept him out for 17 games and 119 days.

Jacob Ramsey in Premier League action for Aston Villa.

With all that time on the sideline, the attacking midfielder did not quite manage to hit the same highest as he did previously. Last term, he played 21 games in all competitions, scoring one goal and grabbing two assists. Just one goal and assist apiece came in the top flight, in 16 games.

It was certainly a frustrating time for Ramsey, although his value did still rise slightly. By June this year, he was worth an impressive £50m, a price Villa slapped on his head, according to Football Insider. This certainly shows just how much he has thrived under Emery. In all, his value under the Spaniard rose an impressive 111% from when he first took charge at Villa Park.

The Villa number 41 has started the new season strongly. He has made three appearances so far, although is yet to start a game as he is eased back to fitness. Ramsey already has an assist to his name, for Jhon Duran against West Ham United, a goal that proved to be a winner.

There is no doubt that, in Ramsey, the Villans have their next academy star in the making. If he can stay fit this season, he could once again put up some stellar numbers under Emery as Villa look to impress on the biggest stage, the Champions League.

They could hardly ask for tougher tests than Spurs and the Sky Blues up next, and Arsenal are also set to be without key players for their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Mikel Merino has been sidelined for nearly two months after fracturing his shoulder in training, while Declan Rice's sending off against Brighton means their star midfielder will miss the north London derby through suspension.

A silver lining for Arsenal is the potential debut of headline-grabbing summer deadline day signing Raheem Sterling, who wasn't registered in time to play a part against Brighton last weekend.

Arteta has explained to the press that Arsenal are preparing for Sterling his imminent first Gunners appearance, as the England international looks to get up to speed tactically and physically.

“We have to see him, speak to him (about) what he’s been doing and how he’s feeling about it," said Arteta on Sterling.

“And try to find quick wins to get him up to speed as quickly as possible and for him to understand what we are looking for from him in the dynamics of the team. We will use that time to do that and get him involved as soon as possible.”

Sterling arrives to hand Arteta a proven back-up to Bukayo Saka who can also play further forward, and it is believed they're only paying £100,000-per-week of the 29-year-old's sky-high Chelsea salary over the course of his loan move.

Ian Wright says Sterling is just "meant" to play for Arsenal

Speaking on The Wrighty's House Podcast this week, fan favourite ex-star turned pundit Wright says Arsenal signing Sterling is a "magnificent" deal, and the former Man City star's transfer was just "meant to be".

“I’m absolutely delighted, the way the deal’s panned out,” said Wright. “When I heard Fulham were in for (Nelson), I thought yeah, I think Raheem’s on his way.

“And when you consider the deal, Raheem, family doesn’t have to move, point to prove, knows the manager, ain’t got a problem with rotation playing, experience.

“You think to yourself that is a magnificent deal for us, a really good signing for us, at 29, Chelsea are paying the majority, it’s almost like it can’t get any better. The only way it’s gonna get any better is when he scores the winner against Tottenham. That’s when you think this is it, it’s meant to be.

“You know when you see a player in your shirt… he suits our shirt, 100 percent.”

Dimuth Karunaratne, Oshada Fernando fifties ensure series ends at 0-0

Dimuth Karunaratne hit 75 and soaked up 176 deliveries in a century stand with Lahiru Thirimanne, and Oshada Fernando struck an unbeaten half-century of his own later in the day, as Sri Lanka comfortably batted out a draw in Antigua.Missing Shannon Gabriel for part of the day due to a hamstring complaint, West Indies were only able to take two Sri Lanka wickets on a pitch that had become slower and lower for the quicks and yet did not take substantial turn for the spinners. Only the occasional delivery misbehaved, and that was usually out of the rough. Each of the four Sri Lanka batsmen who came to the crease in this innings appeared comfortable. Even if the quicks occasionally took the edge, the ball was likely to die well before it reached the slip cordon, as long as it had been played with soft hands. Rahkeem Cornwall, meanwhile, threatened the inside edge with his straighter deliveries, but none of the thick edges was a viable catch for the fielder at short leg. At no stage was there the dramatic, fast turn – often seen in South Asia on the fifth day – to envenom the slow bowlers.

It was the 101-run opening stand that laid the platform for Sri Lanka’s successful resistance. Thirimanne was dropped on 17 in the third over of the day when wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva failed to grasp a straightforward leg-side chance off the bowling of Gabriel. But otherwise, the openers were secure right through that session, defending resolutely and finding regular runs into the outfield, mostly square of the wicket.Karunaratne was especially adept at shuffling across the stumps, closing his bat, and hitting into leg-side gaps. In fact, 55 of his runs (73%) came on that side of the pitch, with all but one of his nine boundaries scored there. He completed a half-century shortly before lunch, having hit some memorable on-drives, to go with his leg-side flicks.Thirimanne was more cautious, venturing only two boundaries in the morning, perhaps pushed to reticence by the early chance he gave up. When he was dismissed for 39 off 114 nicking a full Alzarri Joseph delivery to first slip where Cornwall took a sharp, low catch, Karunaratne slowed down too. Although at times in his innings Karunaratne was striking at over 50, his eventual strike rate was 43. Sri Lanka had very clearly decided the target of 377 was going to be too much of a stretch (it always seemed extremely unlikely).Oshada, likewise, did not seem to be overly troubled either by the pitch or West Indies’ depleted attack. He hit out only against the truly wayward balls, picking up frequent singles in between the big shots. He scored more quickly than the openers, reaching his half-century off the 86th ball he faced, but then buckled down soon after. He was 66 not out off 119 when Kraigg Brathwaite decided no result was possible and the match was called off. With Karunaratne having been dismissed by Kyle Mayers late in the second session, Oshada had Dinesh Chandimal for company for the 20 overs that were played in the third session. Chandimal made 10 off 66 deliveries. In the end, this Antigua surface’s refusal to take substantial spin even at the back end of both Tests allowed teams to bat confidently in the fourth innings, greatly reducing the chance of a result. The footmarks did not play a substantial role, and spinners did not become seriously threatening in either Test. The 0-0 result means Sri Lanka failed to win any of their series in the Caribbean, having lost the T20Is 2-1 and the ODIs 3-0. They do maintain their No. 7 ranking in Tests, however, keeping West Indies at eight.

Fabrizio Romano: Spurs closing in on deal to sign "immense talent" for Ange

After already welcoming Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly "closing in" on welcoming a third possible future star for Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites came out the blocks fairly quickly this summer, with a deal sign Bergvall already agreed in advance and a move to sign Leeds United star Gray agreed as early as the start of this month. Since then, however, Spurs have been quiet on the incoming front with under a month until the 2024/25 Premier League campaign gets underway.

Having missed out on Champions League qualification in Postecoglou's first season in charge too, it's clear that reinforcements are still needed in north London, with reports linking Spurs to the likes of Eberechi Eze and Semih Kilicsoy. Both players would undoubtedly provide Postecoglou's side with the added edge that they lacked at times throughout the last campaign, but it remains to be seen whether the Lilywhites will splash the cash in abundance this summer.

Before Eze or Kiliksoy, Levy looks set to continue his focus on future stars following Gray and Bergvall. According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are "closing in" on a deal to sign Min-hyuk Yang from Gangwon FC this summer. The 18-year-old right-winger impressed in the K League 1 last season and is now edging closer to joining a man who earns plenty of headlines in South Korea and Spurs captain Heung-min Son.

The dream for Yang could be to follow in Son's footsteps to become a Spurs hero and perhaps even one day replace his compatriot, given his ability to play on both the right and left wing.

"Immense" Yang is one for the future

Although he won't immediately steal the headline, Yang's arrival would represent a third piece of smart business from Spurs this summer, as they plan ahead for the future. It's no surprise that the young winger has attracted the Lilywhites' attention either, with DateMB describing him as an "immense talent" in a post comparing his stats to fellow K League wingers last season.

Having scored seven goals and assisted a further four at Gangwon last season, Yang is a player ready to take the spotlight in the Premier League, where he will hope to grab the attention of Postecoglou and eventually earn a consistent place in the Australian's squad. Should he complete a summer move, Spurs will suddenly have three incredibly talented young stars to call on for years to come in north London.
