SAFC fans react to Jones news

Sunderland fans have been reacting to the news that Jordan Jones is set to move on loan to Wigan Athletic from Rangers.

The Black Cats are preparing for their new campaign, which kicks off on Saturday – they will host Wigan at the Stadium of Light. The north-east outfit have made some new signings, with Callum Doyle and Alex Pritchard perhaps the picks of the bunch so far, but Lee Johnson is likely to be looking for more new faces before the end of the transfer window.

12-time Northern Ireland international Jones spent the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland, but he did not return to the Black Cats.

Instead, it appears he will be joining Wigan – as per The Guardian journalist Will Unwin – and, in a twist of fate, could face Sunderland at the weekend. He joins Max Power and Charlie Wyke in making the move to the Latics from the Stadium of Light.

The news was shared by Unwin on his Twitter page, and it attracted plenty of news from the Sunderland supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Everton manager update on Rafael Benitez

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as a fresh update emerged on Rafael Benitez.

As per Sky Sports, the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle boss is set to be appointed as the new manager at Goodison Park as early as next week.

He has agreed key aspects of his deal with the Toffees as they provisionally plan to confirm his arrival on Tuesday.

It is not surprising at all to see so many Evertonians strongly against his imminent appointment, given his past connections with Liverpool, with whom he won the Champions League back in 2005.

The Spaniard also previously called the Blues a ‘small club’ after a draw in the Merseyside derby in February 2007, and it seems that many Toffees fans have not forgiven him for that.

Everton fans on Benitez manager update

These Everton supporters fumed as the update on Benitez was shared across Twitter, with one accusing club owner Farhad Moshiri of being “absolutely clueless”:

WHU eye Joaquin Correa

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Lazio News 24), West Ham are interested in signing Joaquin Correa from Lazio this summer.

The Lowdown: West Ham prepare for Europa League

Last season was a magnificent one for the Hammers as they finished in sixth place in the table, meaning they qualified for the group stages of the Europa League.

As such, they will need to get their squad ready for the continental competition, and that is likely to mean new arrivals at the London Stadium.

The Latest: Hammers eye Correa

It is being reported that David Moyes and co are interested in signing Correa from Serie A outfit Lazio.

The 26-year-old is also being targeted by Everton, with the Biancocelesti said to be looking for a fee of €30m (£25.8m) for his services, according to Corriere dello Sport (via Lazio News 24).

The Verdict: Interesting option

Correa has been a solid option for Lazio since making the move there from Sevilla. In 117 games for the Biancocelesti, he has racked up 30 goals and 18 assists (Transfermarkt), highlighting his attacking threat. In 2020/21, he managed 11 goals and six assists as the Rome-based outfit competed in the Champions League.

Correa’s versatility may also be something which interests Moyes. He can play anywhere across the front line, while he has even been known to play slightly deeper in left or right midfield (Transfermarkt).

Given his relatively young age, the sum demanded does not appear to be too high, although that may depend on who else the Irons would like to bring in.

In other news, many West Ham fans want the club to sign this 29-year-old striker.

Pundit wants Duncan Ferguson and Tim Cahill at Everton

Former Everton striker Marcus Bent has thrown out the idea of two of his former teammates Duncan Ferguson and Tim Cahill teaming up in management to take the reins at Goodison Park, amid reports that Nuno Santo is the favourite to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

Ferguson is already part of the coaching staff, having joined in 2014, and was Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant manager before his recent departure.

Meanwhile, 41-year-old Cahill, who spent eight seasons at Goodison Park before leaving for the MLS, is yet to take his first steps into coaching, but was meant to take up a role during his time with Melbourne City. However, he continued playing with both Millwall and then in India, and never had the opportunity.

But Ferguson has already had a taste in the hot seat when he took charge of four matches as caretaker manager when Marco Silva was sacked back in December 2019.

The Toffees fans’ favourite put together an inspiring unbeaten run, which included games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United, with his reward a promotion to Ancelotti’s coaching staff.

“Tim has got to go in as assistant manager, Dunc [Duncan Ferguson] would be the manager,” Bent exclusively told Football FanCast.

“Tim is currently in Dubai getting a little more intelligence around the game and around the world. The fans adore him. But Dunc has been there a while since Moyesy left, and had that little stint, so maybe give him a chance.”

Gers fans rage at season ticket news

Glasgow Rangers fans appear to be far from happy despite the news that the Ibrox season ticket allocation for next season is already sold out.

The Gers enjoyed a fantastic campaign last term as they won the Premiership for the first time in 10 years without losing a single game in the competition (thefishy.co.uk).

Unfortunately, it was a season which the supporters could not enjoy as usual – the coronavirus pandemic meant all the fixtures were played in front of an empty stadium.

However, despite that, the club sold all of their season tickets last term, and they have done so again for the 2021/22 campaign (rangers.co.uk). That means 45,000 fans have bought tickets in advance for the campaign without knowing when Ibrox will be at full capacity. A number of fans though, are unhappy at the news as they are angry MyGers members have been given priority.

The news attracted plenty of attention from the fans, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their frustration.

Let’s see what the Rangers fans had to say below

“So u don’t get access to stadium unless u are a my gers member”

“Aye how many are my gers members getting priority treatment? Absolute disgrace.”

“Ticket availability was a shambles. I’m a MyGers Member n and have been on the waiting list for a few years. Got an email last week to say a ticket was available. Logged in put the ticket in the basket but would never let me checkout due to website error.”

In other news, Rangers fans are livid at this 21/22 reveal.

Rangers heading for Oli McBurnie disaster

Rangers have recently been linked with a move for Sheffield United striker Oliver McBurnie ahead of the summer transfer window, but his record in recent seasons suggests that he would not be a good addition to Steven Gerrard’s side at Ibrox.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, the Gers are plotting a summer swoop for the Scotland international, who is expected to leave Bramall Lane following Sheffield United’s relegation to the Championship.

The report suggests that, despite his less than impressive form this season, the Blades value him at £15m, which would mean that Rangers would have to surpass the £12m paid for Tore Andre Flo in 2000, which remains their record transfer fee.

Would he be a good signing?

Considering the fee Rangers would need to pay for McBurnie, it seems that he would not be a good addition to Gerrard’s side this summer.

This season has seen the former Swansea City man contribute just one goal in 23 Premier League appearances for the Blades, averaging a less than impressive 6.67 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Although he was much better last season when Sheffield United enjoyed an excellent first campaign back in the Premier League under Chris Wilder, his six goals hardly mark him out as a prolific striker who could oust Alfredo Morelos or Kemar Roofe in Gerrard’s side next term.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Scottish pundit Michael Stewart was less than complimentary about the 24-year-old earlier this season, saying: “For a £20m striker he can’t run, he can’t hold up the ball, he doesn’t link well, he doesn’t shoot. He’s simply not strong enough to play that role.”

The striker’s frustrations also boiled over recently as he was arrested after being filmed during his involvement in a brawl on the street, which suggests that he isn’t the sort of character Gerrard would like to have in his squad at Ibrox.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

If the £15m fee is accurate, Rangers could spend their money a lot more wisely this summer, especially in a position where they are already well-stocked, so hopefully Ross Wilson sees sense and decides against signing McBurnie, who could prove to be a disastrous signing.

Roberts says Ndombele should do more

Former Tottenham captain Graham Roberts has exclusively told Football FanCast that Tanguy Ndombele has failed to live up to his price-tag in north London.

The Frenchman joined Spurs in a £63m deal from Lyon in the summer of 2019 but struggled with injuries and form, and was restricted to a bit-part role during his first season.

Ndombele was heavily criticised by Jose Mourinho pre-lockdown, having been hauled off at half-time at Turf Moor.

However, that appeared to be a turning point for the midfielder, who has since become a regular for Tottenham this season, making 43 appearances in all competitions, featuring in all-but four of their Premier League games.

But Ndombele has been an unused substitute in Spurs’ previous two matches under Ryan Mason and came under scrutiny from Glenn Hoddle, who said the 23-year-old slows the game down too much and should be nothing more than a squad player.

Despite Ndombele making major strides at the club this term, Roberts told Football FanCast that he agrees with the ex-Tottenham manager:

“I think he’s a good player, don’t get me wrong. But, for me, if you’re that sort of player, Eriksen scored 10-12 goals a season, Ndombele has scored three goals in two seasons. That isn’t good enough.

“If you paid whatever Tottenham did, they should be getting 10 goals a season from midfield. I agree with Glenn, he tries to do too many tricks. Dele Alli is a far better player.”

Rice’s return a silver lining for West Ham

Declan Rice’s return from injury was one huge silver lining for West Ham as their recent poor form continued on Saturday afternoon.

The Irons were dealt a devastating blow to their already slim top-four chances after they could only return to East London with one point, making it three losses and one draw from their last five outings.

However, the 22-year-old powerhouse was the rare positive from their disappointing showing at the Amex Stadium.

Rice had missed their last six matches after picking up a knee problem whilst on international duty but in reality, it was like he was never away as he was once again cut above the rest on the pitch.

He captained the side in the absence of Mark Noble and shone above his fellow Hammers teammates.

As per SofaScore, the 15-time England international recorded a team-high 90 touches of the ball, meaning everything ran through him as he looked to control the match on his return to competitive football.

With those touches, Rice successfully made 94% of his 77 passes – again, the most of any visiting star and only further shows how much of an influence he has in this squad.

Considering he had been out for the past month or so, it was certainly an impressive showing despite the poor result.

According to the Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser he “controlled the game” and football.london were equally glowing in their post-game column.

“Excellent return to the side after a number of matches out. He allowed Tomas Soucek to push forward and shielded his defence expertly. Good on the ball which is an often underrated part of his game.”

The £54m-rated beast, who earns a reported £60k-per-week at the London Stadium, also chipped in with two blocks, one tackle and one interception, via SofaScore.

His dominance through the middle was further evident by the fact that he didn’t lose a single midfield battle, winning 100% of his duels throughout the 90 minutes he was on the pitch.

Impressive.

It’s no wonder Noble has previously lauded his teammate as a “special talent” because not many could come straight back in from a serious injury and control a Premier League match like that.

Perhaps his return can fuel more positive returns in their final two matches of the season.

The Hammers will have to win both to stand a chance at qualifying for the Europa League, that’s for sure.

Everton fans on ten Hag manager update

Some Everton fans have been left to buzz as Erik ten Hag has been named as a potential candidate to be the new manager at Goodison Park.

As per The Athletic, the current Ajax boss is on the shortlist of the Merseyside club to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who has left to go and manage Real Madrid.

However, the news outlet also claims that it is unlikely at this stage that ten Hag would take the job, especially given the fact that he signed a new one-year contract extension with the Dutch club until 2023 back in April (Sky Sports).

Nonetheless, he would seemingly be a popular choice among some members of the Toffees faithful, given that he has recently won the domestic double with Ajax (Transfermarkt).

The 51-year-old also famously guided an exciting Ajax team, containing names such as Matthijs De Ligt, Frenkie De Jong and Hakim Ziyech, to the UEFA Champions League semi-final stage in the 2018/19 season, only to be knocked out by a last-gasp Lucas Moura goal for Tottenham Hotspur.

Leeds eye Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico

According to reports, Leeds are interested in signing Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico.

What’s the story?

With Gjanni Alioski set to leave Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the summer once his contract expires – there have even been suggestions that he has agreed a pre-contract with Turkish Super Lig giants Galatasaray – it’s no surprise that the Premier League club appear to be on the look-out for a new left-back.

Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen revealed during the broadcast of Ajax’s Europa League clash against AS Roma on Thursday night that the Whites “would like to have” the 28-year-old.

Bielsa’s game-changer

Since joining from Argentinian side Independiente, the £22.5m-rated Tagliafico has established himself as a key part of Ajax’s line-up, even helping them reach the Champions League semi-finals just a couple of seasons ago.

Dubbed as “fierce” and someone who “works hard”, he has got the kind of attacking instincts as a left-back which would surely please Bielsa. A profile done by Football.London revealed: “In Argentina, Tagliafico is regarded as the heir to Zanetti because of his lung-busting stamina, excellent technique and continuous attacking threat.”

With a decent record of 13 goals and 18 assists in 135 games for Ajax as a left-back, it’s the 28-year-old’s underlying numbers which really stand out and make him someone who could be a game-changer for Bielsa.

As per WhoScored, Tagliafico averages far more shots, key passes, dribbles and crosses per game in league football than Alioski has done this season, and is comfortably better than him defensively, too. While the two players are evenly-matched for tackles made, it’s the Argentine who wins when it comes to interceptions and clearances, while also being dribbled past on fewer occasions.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Latest Leeds transfer rumours and news”]

Having a marauding left-back like Tagliafico – who this season was recorded by UEFA as having a faster sprint speed than Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi – could add a whole new dimension to Leeds’ attacks and ensure that Bielsa’s side aren’t just looking to the likes of Patrick Bamford and Raphinha for attacking inspiration.

Meanwhile, Leeds must unleash this academy starlet…
