Celtic fans smug after scoring controversial goal

Celtic fans on Twitter have been feeling rather smug after they scored a controversial goal in their Betfred Cup game against Hibs.

Indeed, the Bhoys’ second goal came under some rather questionable circumstances as Odsonne Edouard was quite clearly in an offside position when he received the ball before assisting Callum McGregor for the Hoops’ second goal.

With Scotland not having VAR in place there was no check after this goal and with the linesman failing to flag up this offside Neil Lennon’s side were able to go 2-0 up with relative ease.

The fans didn’t seem to care that their goal had been scored illegally, in fact, they seemed rather smug about it.

One fan sarcastically thanked the Scottish FA, while another joked that Lennon had bribed the referee before the game.

Others felt that this was just the match levelling itself out as they believed that the Scottish champions had been denied a stonewall penalty minutes earlier.

Here’s what the Celtic Park faithful have been saying on social media…

Jonjo Shelvey display splits the Newcastle fans

Jonjo Shelvey played the full 90 minutes as Newcastle United recorded a 2-1 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.DeAndre Yedlin and Ciaran Clark scored the goals for the Magpies, who recovered from an early deficit with Harry Wilson sending the visitors ahead in the early exchanges.Shelvey’s performance was the subject of much debate on social media. And it would be fair to say that the Newcastle fans have mixed views when it comes to the former Liverpool midfielder’s display. The statistics show that the 27-year-old had three shots and made two tackles, but WhoScoredÂalso reveal that his pass success rate was down at 61%, with just 19 of his 31 passes considered accurate.

There is no question that the result was impressive for Steve Bruce’s side, who have now won their last two in the Premier League.

However, Shelvey did not convince all of the fans on Saturday afternoon, as shown by the mixed messages below:

Leeds fans unmoved as Kalvin Phillips to Man United rumours resurface

Leeds United fans on Twitter aren’t too worried about rumours resurfacing linking Kalvin Phillips with a move to Manchester United.

The move was originally reported last month, but BBC Sport brought up the prospect of a move happening again when introducing their gossip column on Tuesday.

On the whole, United fans have made it clear that they’re not buying these reports as they believe Phillips will stay loyal to the Whites due to the fact that he’s supported them from a young age.

Of course, club affiliations can go out of the window once the big clubs come knocking, and Leeds fans know this all too well after Alan Smith joined the Red Devils back in 2004 despite once saying that he’d never play for the English giants.

Whether or not the midfielder does swap Elland Road for Old Trafford remains to be seen, but many supporters believe that these rumours are nothing more than gossip.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter…

Pointless Morgan Schneiderlin deal lost Man United £10m in 18 months

Louis van Gaal brought some incredible talent to Old Trafford during his era in charge, however the addition of Morgan Schneiderlin proved to be pretty pointless.

The Dutchman had a mixed career as head coach for Manchester United, helping the Red Devils restore form and go on to win the FA Cup in his final season. However, van Gaal didn’t have much success in the Premier League despite the pedigree of his Manchester side. The 68-year-old spent two years with the club before he was sacked, and recruited household names including Memphis Depay and Angel di Maria during that time.

One signing in particular who didn’t cut the mustard was now-Everton midfielder Schneiderlin. United signed the Frenchman in 2015 from Southampton for a fee of £31.5million, despite only scoring five goals in 30 appearances. van Gaal must have seen something promising in the midfielder in order to add him to the ranks of one of the most successful clubs in the world.

But whatever the Dutchman saw in him, he absolutely didn’t deliver on it. Schneiderlin tallied a measly one goal and one assist in 47 appearances in red. He has also repeated an almost identical display whilst at Everton, accumulating one goal and two assists.

Absolute steal: How much did these bargain Premier League stars cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Schneiderlin’s disappointing Man United era saw him move on less than two years later, sold to the Toffees for £20.7m. In his final full season at Old Trafford, the Frenchman’s stats left little to the imagination. He averaged just 0.2 shots and 0.3 key passes per game – pathetic stats for a player occupying a team’s engine room (via Sofascore).

It’s likely that the club just wanted to cash in and get whatever they could for their midfield flop, but wasting more than £10m on a signing who made almost zero impact will definitely be a piece of business the United hierarchy wants to forget.

Real Madrid’s Isco should leave the club in order to revive his career

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Isco is one of those Real Madrid players that is slowly but surely fading into obscurity.

The now 27-year-old Spaniard no longer enjoys a major role in the club but according to AS, some big Premier League fish, such as Manchester City and Arsenal, are extremely interested in his services.

What’s the word, then?

Life didn’t use to be so harsh for Isco in the Spanish capital.

A couple of years back, he was one of the most important players Real Madrid had in their squad. After all, we’re talking about a former star who started in ten out of 12 Champions League clashes and 21 La Liga games just two seasons ago and then abruptly faded into the background.

Of course, injuries did play their part as he has already missed a total of six games in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign and was absent for ten in 2018/19 due to various different issues.

By all accounts, luck hasn’t been on his side for a while but if the reports from AS are true, and Isco wants to reignite his career in order to be ready for the national team’s ventures, he should make the most out of Manchester City and Arsenal’s interest.

AS claim that both Pep Guardiola and Unai Emery are really fond of the Spaniard and, if that proves to be true, this could be huge for the 27-year-old and he shouldn’t let this opportunity pass him by.

A new beginning

Not many players in modern football are lucky enough to get second chances.

Even though Isco is still a well-known name within the Real Madrid squad, the fact that he is no longer a key part of the team definitely doesn’t look good on his resume.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

But the reported interest from the likes of Guardiola and Emery is exactly what the good doctor had prescribed and what his career is currently missing.

It could reinstall that long-forgotten spark that he used to carry in his performances.

AS mention that the Galacticos are keen on letting certain players go in order to land some other major targets but that is definitely good news for the Spaniard – his club seemingly won’t stand in his way.

From his point of view, and from Real Madrid’s as well, this is a no-brainer.

Not to mention that these opportunities often don’t come knocking twice.

Charlton fans rave over Macauley Bonne

Charlton secured a mightily impressive 3-0 victory over Derby on Saturday as Lee Bower’s men put in what was arguably their most convincing performance since Lyle Taylor got injured.

The forward had bagged five goals in six matches before having to sit on the sidelines and since then the Addicks had won just once in their last five outings before their victory on Saturday.

They were back in form against the Rams and one of their stand out performers was former Leyton Orient man Macauley Bonne.

Fans raved about the striker during and after the match as one supporter claimed he was a packet of blonde hair eye away from being Taylor.

A further individual labelled him a baller while the 23-year-old was also described as a special find.

Bonne signed for Charlton after starring in the National League last term, a division he scored 23 goals in throughout the 2018/19 campaign.

He’s started to really find his feet in the Championship and now has three goals in his last four outings.

Here’s what fans have been saying about him on Twitter.

Real Madrid fans bash Sergio Ramos for quotes on club mentality

Just a couple of days ago, Florentino Perez did an interview for Marca, saying that the problem of this current Real Madrid squad is that they’ve lost their hunger and desire following years of success.

And interestingly enough, not long after that, Sergio Ramos, the team’s captain, came out with an entirely different narrative, stating the exact opposite and suggesting Los Blancos do still have that hunger.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

We can’t know for sure whose words hold the truest, but we know the fans weren’t really buying Ramos’ rallying cry, to say the least.

Real Madrid’s official Twitter account published the interview with their captain and many fans were quick to bash him for his latest quotes.

Some simply don’t believe him at all, some think it’s not enough to just say you’re hungry for success and some even reminded him of Perez’s statement from the other day, sneakily pointing out the contradicting words of captain and president.

Fernandez, Felix & eight players Chelsea could sign in the January transfer window

After the anomaly of a mid-season 'pre-season', new Blues boss Graham Potter can now shape the squad in his image with some new faces

Having already had the unusual benefit of a six-week period to work closely with those players who were not involved in the World Cup in Qatar, away from scrutiny and the public eye, recently-appointed Chelsea manager Graham Potter now has an opportune transfer window to fine tune his squad.

However, a sharp downturn in form before the World Cup break means Potter and new owner Todd Boehly probably have more work on their hands than they bargained for – especially after the lavish summer outlay on the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana.

The question those in charge will need to ask themselves is whether cosmetic changes in the new year will be enough, or whether a complete overhaul is required for a squad that has stagnated in certain areas – one that will likely have to wait until the summer.

Molde forward David Datro Fofana has already been brought in, but he is unlikely to be the last new fact at Stamford Bridge over the winter.

So if Chelsea do decide to enter the market again in January, GOAL runs through eight players they could consider to improve their fortunes…

    Enzo Fernandez (Benfica)

The man who has emerged as Chelsea's prime January transfer target.

The Blues midfield is in need of a refresh, with Jorginho failing to hit the lofty heights expected of him when he signed and both Mateo Kovacic and N'Golo Kante regularly struggling with fitness issues.

Fernandez could be the perfect antidote after his breakout performances at the World Cup – but his showings there also mean Chelsea will have to pay through the nose to get him.

Given the Blues' need for an injection of quality and consistency in midfield, a total fee northwards of £100 million may just be worth it in the long run.

Just imagine if they sign Jude Bellingham in the summer too…

    Benoit Badiashile (Monaco)

Monaco centre-back Badiashile emerged as a target for Chelsea late in December with the transfer window fast approaching.

Although Chelsea reinforced their depleted backline with the additions of Koulibaly, Fofana and Cucurella following the exits of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso in the summer, Potter still feels that he needs a left-sided centre-back who can compete for a starting place – and if we're honest, that's fair enough.

As a top team that regularly plays three at the back Chelsea need quality depth in central defence, and highly-rated Badiashile – who is already a full France international at 21 – would tick that box, while a €35 million (£31m/$37m) fee seems reasonable by modern standards.

  • Daniel Ramalho/Vasco

    Andrey Santos (Vasco da Gama)

Another exciting youngster who has moved across Chelsea's radar is Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos.

GOAL understands the Blues are close to securing the 18-year-old's signature following a breakout season in Brazil's Serie B.

Andrey has been dubbed 'the Brazilian Busquets' in his home country, due to his passing ability and the way in which he is able to tackle, be press resistant and screen the defence, but he even adds something the Barcelona stalwart doesn't: goals.

The teenager netted eight times in 36 games in the recently-concluded Brazilian season as he marauded from box to box, and can probably be considered more of a No.8 – something Chelsea are crying out for, although the step up from Brazil's second tier to the Premier League will be significant.

    Joao Felix (Atletico Madrid)

Granted, Joao Felix's time at Atletico Madrid should serve as a warning: evidently, the exuberant 23-year-old's playing style does not suit a more pragmatic overall approach.

However, though it could be a complex deal for the January window, as Chelsea gradually adapt to Potter's possession-based, attacking style, the opportunity to sign a player of Felix's quality could prove too good to pass up – especially after he gave the world a reminder of his talents with Portugal in Qatar.

An unhappy Felix seems certain to leave Atleti in the near future and Chelsea are reportedly among those interested, with an initial loan deal with an option or obligation to buy in the summer being discussed.

However, that future fee could well be very costly as the Madrid club look to recoup the £113 million they spent on the former Benfica man.

Wolves’ media team deserve huge credit for their tweet after Willy Boly’s goal

Istanbul. The name of Turkey’s most heavily populated city brings about a whole new meaning when you mention in a footballing context.Of course, the mere mention of Istanbul brings back incredible memories of the 2005 Champions League final, where Liverpool came back from 3-0 down to win the trophy against AC Milan.Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, the Turkish city has been home to incredible European drama before, and it played host to another memorable moment on Thursday as Wolves faced Besiktas in the Europa League.

Willy Boly netted in injury time to secure the Premier League outfit’s first Europa League group stage win, and this provided a unique opportunity for the club’s media team.

The person running Wolves’ Twitter account deserves huge props for this one.

The pun ‘Istanboly’ would make any newspaper editor around the world proud, although we wonder how long they sat there after the goal trying to think of the perfect way to deliver their joke.

Matt Henry four-for lifts Somerset but Durham still in the fight

Ollie Robinson top-scores in hosts’ 277 but late wickets keep contest on an even keel

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay23-May-2025Matt Henry took four wickets for Somerset but 20-year-old Mitch Killeen’s late strike helped Durham just shade the first day of the Rothesay County Championship match at the Banks Homes Riverside.Despite Ollie Robinson’s 52 and a half-century stand for the last wicket, the home side were dismissed for 277 in their first innings in a match between teams who possess identical records and are currently separated by a handful of bonus points in the Division One table.Having accounted for three top-order batsmen, Henry returned figures of 4 for 60 but Somerset were 63 for 3 in reply at the close with the wicket of Tom Lammonby falling to Championship debutant Killeen for 24 just seven balls before the close. The day’s cricket began in atrocious fashion for the home side when their captain, Alex Lees, inside-edged Henry’s first ball of the game onto his off stump ands departed for a golden duck.Ben McKinney and Emilio Gay then repaired the home side’s innings with a 65-run stand in 20 overs before McKinney was caught behind by James Rew for 30 when he played outside a ball from Josh Davey that was angled in to him from around the wicket.Gay had already been dropped on 26 at midwicket by Jack Leach off Migael Pretorius when McKinney’s wicket fell but the former Northamptonshire batsman could not capitalise on his escape. Instead he was dismissed for 41 a quarter of an hour before lunch when he top edged a pull off Henry to Tom Abell at long leg.Having seen Lewis Gregory lose the toss, Somerset’s bowlers were probably satisfied with a lunch score of 96 for 3. And they would have been ecstatic a few minutes after the resumption when the palpably dangerous David Bedingham shuffled across his stumps, looked to work the ball to leg and was lbw to his fellow South African, Pretorius, for 17.Robinson responded to that reverse by taking hitting three fine fours in four balls of an over from Craig Overton and all this seemed to set the tone for a session in which quick runs were traded for wickets. Having made 51 runs off 45 deliveries since his lunch and reached his half-century in 61 minutes off 52 balls in all, Robinson was caught by Rew off Henry when he nicked a ball of full length towards first slip, only to see the diving keeper complete a fine catch.Graham Clark then made 15 in 21 minutes before apparently snicking Josh Davey down the leg side to Rew and his departure left Durham on 185 for 6 in the 50th over. Colin Ackermann was bowled by Overton for 30 and five balls later, Raine was leg before to Pretorius for 25. Tea arrived with Durham on 227 for 8, 131 runs having been scored and five wickets taken in the session’s 34 overs.Five balls into the evening session, Killeen’s first innings in Championship cricket ended when he was caught by first slip Lewis Gregory off Henry for a 15-ball nought but Codi Yusuf and Minto then batted as calmly and sensibly as most of the top order to take Durham to their first bonus point of the innings. And not content with adding the 23 runs necessary for that landmark to be reached, the pair put on exactly 50 before Minto, who made 67 as a nightwatch-opener last week, was caught by Lammonby at square leg off Pretorius for 34. Yusuf was unbeaten on 16 and Pretorius finished with 3 for 63.Somerset’s first innings also began poorly when Gregory was bowled by Minto for 5 when his attempt to let the ball go only diverted it into his stumps but Davey and Lammonby added 42 before Davey was caught at slip off Yusuf for 24 and Lammonby was caught behind off Killeen for 18
