Phangiso reported for suspect action

Lions left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso has been reported for an illegal action following his team’s win against Warriors in the semi-finals of the Momentum One Day Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Feb-2016Lions left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso has been reported for an illegal action following his team’s win against Warriors in the semi-finals of the Momentum One Day Cup on February 25.In accordance with the ICC’s regulations and Law 18 clause 2.25, Phangiso’s action will now have to be tested in “as soon as reasonably possible but, in any event, within 21 days of receipt by the Player’s Home Board of the notice.” He will be tested on Friday at the ICC-accredited High Performance Academy at the University of Pretoria. Fourteen days after that test, an ICC appointed specialist will furnish the body with written report which will determine whether Phangiso’s action is legal or not.Phangiso, who has played 16 ODIs and nine T20Is and has taken a combined tally of 29 wickets for South Africa, is part of their squad for the upcoming World T20 in India. The time frame for his testing means that Phangiso’s performance in the World T20 could be affected. Even if he is tested immediately, the 14-day period for the analysis would only conclude on March 10, after the first round of the tournament begins. Changes to squads are allowed until March 8, which may see South Africa’s selectors look for another back-up spinner to Imran Tahir. When contacted on Thursday morning, South Africa’s convener of selectors, Linda Zondi, was in a meeting and unavailable for immediate comment. It is likely him and his panel will consider another option to Phangiso. Eddie Leie, who has played two T20s for South Africa, could come into contention if he recovers from the hamstring injury which kept him out of the one-day cup semi-final in time. This is the third time this year Phangiso has made headlines. In mid-January it emerged that he had been prevented from boarding an international flight following South Africa’s ODI series win in India because he was drunk and disorderly and CSA had subsequently handed him an unknown sanction. This week, Phangiso had to apologise for being caught on camera pretending to sniff an unknown substance off his leg during South Africa’s T20 against England at the Wanderers. Phangiso was in the dug out and his gesture took place when South Africa were batting. He said it was a lighthearted joke but understood that in a country with a drug problem, it was inappropriate.

Hales, Warner bring the stardust but local names the key for Sydney Thunder

They have a young captain in Jason Sangha and Daniel Sams will have a vital role with bat and ball

What happened in the draft

It felt like they had done well with Alex Hales, David Willey and Rilee Rossouw. Willey was an enticing platinum pick with his availability for most of the season, but he recently withdrew from the deal sending Thunder back to the drawing board and they brought in Afghanistan left-armer Fazalhaq Farooqi. Hales will return to his long-term club on the back of T20 World Cup success and Rossouw has had an impressive season in the format. Both, however, will only be around until early January.Related

Last season: Knockout

Thunder reached the finals on the back of a strong mid-season run where they won six games on the bounce including a 129-run hammering of Melbourne Renegades where Daniel Sams hit an astonishing 98 off 44 balls. But they fell short against Adelaide Strikers where they had got the equation down to 39 off 23 balls then 14 off the last over which Harry Conway was able to defend. Jason Sangha led the run-scoring with 445 at 49.44 and a strike-rate of 132.04 and Sams was the leading wicket-taker with 19 although Tanveer Sangha and Gurinder Sandhu were the most consistent performers.

International impact

The return of David Warner to the BBL was the big off-season story, but the window for his availability after the South Africa series may shrink with the squad due to depart for India in late January. Still, when he does suit up in green it will be one of the most anticipated moments of the tournament – especially the derby clash with Steven Smith’s Sydney Sixers. Beyond that, and the overseas players, Thunder are unlikely to be hit by international call-ups as they have no one else in the Test set-up with Usman Khawaja having moved to Brisbane Heat.

Key player

Daniel Sams is another player who might feel he has a part to play in the future of Australia’s T20 side after being on the fringes in recent seasons. For Thunder, he will have a big role to play with bat and ball, although with the later bringing down his economy rate a touch may help his international ambitions. In terms of the batting, it will be interesting to see how and where he is used. As he showed last season with that 98 he has the potential to be destructive, although that innings was an outlier in the campaign. But since then he has produced equally powerful innings in the T20 Blast (71 off 24 balls) and the Hundred (55 off 25 balls).

Young player to watch

Tanveer Sangha’s stress fracture is a blow to their bowling attack, but Ollie Davies caused instant excitement when he struck two quickfire innings at the start of his BBL career in late 2020, but things have been tougher since then making 74 in 11 innings. The early stages of this season were hindered as he came back from a hip injury but in November in made 115 off 106 balls playing for the combined NSW/ACT XI against West Indies in Canberra.

No straitjacket definition of conflict of interest – Shah

Justice AP Shah, who was recently appointed ombudsman by the BCCI to deal with conflict-of-interest cases in the board, has said that an issue like conflict of interest must be understood within the context of the organization and it does not have a “stra

Raunak Kapoor11-Nov-2015Justice Ajit Prakash Shah, who was recently appointed ombudsman by the BCCI to look into matters of conflict of interest in the board, has said that an issue like conflict of interest “cannot have a straitjacket definition” and, in the case of the BCCI, must be understood in the context of the organisation. Shah said that the BCCI seems to have acknowledged that it faces “structural problems” and saw his appointment as an opportunity to support the reforms.”Generally, conflict of interest is a situation where someone has multiple interests, which could potentially clash with each other, and which could possibly affect how you operate in specific circumstances,” Shah told ESPNcricinfo. “However, the context will change the colour of the definition. You cannot have a straitjacket definition for all circumstances.”BCCI’s challenges as a large sports organisation are unique, and conflict of interest must be understood in its unique context. This is not an answer that is easy or which can be obtained immediately.”Shah’s appointment as the BCCI’s first-ever ombudsman is part of president Shashank Manohar’s reformatory agenda to have an independent authority look into problems relating to conflicts of interest among the BCCI’s administrators and employees, as well as current and former players on its payroll.”In a large sports body like the BCCI, there are several challenges of management and organisation,” Shah said. “The BCCI itself seems to have acknowledged that it has structural problems. My role is to help them to avoid such issues in the future. Reforms are being introduced, and the Supreme Court has also intervened. This is a welcome step. The appointment is an opportunity for me to support the reforms.”Shah also highlighted that the effectiveness of the ombudsman will depend on how an organisation uses the role. He suggested that using an ombudsman in the right way could help the BCCI preempt many of the issues it faces today.”The idea of having an ombudsman to address complaints in an organisation is not new,” he said. “Ombudsmen already exist for various sectors, in both government and the private sector. In India, for instance, you have ombudsmen for the banking and insurance sectors.”How an organisaton is likely to benefit depends on how they use the ombudsman, what kind of complaints the ombudsman receives, and what actions that ombudsman can take. Used in the right way, an ombudsman can help a large organisation like the BCCI preempt many of the problems it faces today.”Shah, a former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, admitted that he is a keen follower of the game and his decision to accept the BCCI’s appointment stemmed from his desire to contribute towards maintaining “the purity of the game”.”I am a keen follower of the game, but not an expert. I try not to miss a single one-day international, and even watch Tests if I get the time,” he said. “I accepted the appointment because I thought this was one way in which I could contribute to maintain the purity of the game.”

Hundred critic Richard Gould becomes new ECB chief executive

Former Surrey and Somerset chief executive will join from Bristol City FC in January 2023

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Oct-2022Richard Gould, a prominent critic of the Hundred during his tenure at Surrey, has been appointed chief executive at the ECB, beating Durham’s Tim Bostock to the role. Gould has spent the last 18 months as CEO at Bristol City Football Club but was previously involved in county cricket for 16 years, spending six years as Somerset’s chief executive before another decade in the same role at Surrey.Gould’s ECB-appointment comments focused on discrimination and inclusivity, with the ECB’s own statement noting his influential role in launching Ebony Rainford-Brent’s ACE Programme while at Surrey.”I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead our game forward in England and Wales as part of a talented and committed team that encompasses the ECB, every cricket club in the land, all the counties, our partners, sponsors, fans and the army of players and volunteers that support the game in every corner of our country,” he said.Related

“Cricket is a national asset that can be played by all, and helps strengthen and enhance communities across the nation. It can inspire the country and provides opportunities for all. But we have also seen the pain suffered by those who have experienced discrimination. We are determined to repair this damage, and show that cricket can become the most inclusive and welcoming sport of all.”I look forward to taking up the role in the new year, but for now will be an armchair fan supporting our men’s team in the T20 World Cup in Australia, whilst the women prepare for their T20 World Cup challenge in February.”The ECB said in a statement that their nominations committee had “unanimously recommended” Gould to their board, which had then ratified the appointment on Friday after a lengthy recruitment process.Gould will take up his post at the end of January, with Clare Connor – who has been interim chief executive since Tom Harrison’s departure earlier this year – continuing in that role over the next three months.Gould is the second recent Surrey employee to move into a senior ECB role, after Richard Thompson was appointed as chair in August. The pair worked closely together during their time at The Oval, where they were outspoken critics of the Hundred. However, Thompson conceded shortly after starting as chair in September that his stance has softened, saying: “If the Hundred can generate significant value to the game then that’s got to be a good thing.”The competition also forms part of the ECB’s TV deal with Sky Sports, which runs until 2028, so there is no realistic prospect of it being scrapped imminently.Gould’s own position had become more conciliatory by the time he left Surrey. Shortly before leaving the club in 2021, he told Sky: “We hope the Hundred is a great success, we hope that every match here plays to a sell-out attendance and we’ll be doing our absolute utmost to make sure that is delivered.”Thompson added: “When I joined the ECB, I said that this was a reset moment for our organisation and our sport. Recruiting a CEO who can lead the organisation forwards and deliver on the vision of becoming the UK’s most inclusive sport was one of the first important steps in that. With his outstanding leadership skills and experience of managing transformation, the Nominations Committee felt that Richard Gould was the outstanding candidate.”I am looking forward to working with Richard to not only bring our game together, but to show how cricket can do so much more in bringing communities together. We will work in a spirit of collaboration and partnership with the whole cricket network to do this.”I’d also like to express my sincere thanks to Clare Connor who has done an outstanding job as Interim CEO at an incredibly challenging time for the organisation. I look forward to her continuing to play a leading role in growing our game as part of the ECB’s leadership team when Richard joins.”

Jaques leaves New South Wales after early-season struggles

Greg Shipperd, the Sydney Sixers’ coach, will take charge until the end of the season

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Nov-2022Former Australia batter Phil Jaques has lost his job as New South Wales head coach after the state’s poor start to the domestic season which sees them bottom of both the Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup.A planned mid-season review during the BBL break was brought forward following NSW’s latest Shield defeat against Western Australia last week and it was announced on Tuesday morning that Jaques had left his role.Greg Shipperd, who is currently Sydney Sixers’ coach in the BBL, will take temporary charge until the end of the domestic season. He will begin with this week’s Shield match against Victoria before moving into his Sixers’ role then back to NSW for the latter part of the summer.Jaques came into the head coach role for the 2018-19 season having done two years with Queensland between 2015 and 2017 before returning to NSW as batting coach. NSW won the Sheffield Shield in the 2019-2020 season which was curtailed by the pandemic and the Marsh Cup in 2020-21.”On behalf of all at Cricket NSW I’d like to thank Phil for his contribution to cricket in NSW as both a player and coach,” Greg Mail, the NSW chief of cricket performance, said. “Phil is an immensely passionate NSW person and has given his all in his time as head coach, but we feel that now is the right time to make a change. We wish Phil well in his future endeavours.Shipperd is one of the most highly-regarded coaches in the Australian game and has also filled various roles around the world.”Greg Shipperd’s cricket acumen and his coaching record is well renowned, and we are very pleased that he has agreed to guide our Blues program while we take the time to understand our next move,” Mail said. “He has existing relationships with many of the players and staff and I expect his transition into the group, starting with this week’s match against Victoria, will be seamless.”

Suresh Raina announces retirement from cricket

The decision will allow the batter to play tournaments like the Road Safety Series and overseas T20 leagues

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Sep-2022Suresh Raina, the former India and Uttar Pradesh batter, has announced his retirement from “all formats of cricket,” confirming the end of his IPL and India domestic career. Raina, 35, had already retired from international cricket, announcing that decision on August 15, 2020 shortly after MS Dhoni had retired.”It has been an absolute honour to represent my country & state UP. I would like to announce my retirement from all formats of cricket,” Raina posted on Twitter on Tuesday. The decision will allow Raina to play tournaments like the Road Safety Series, for which he has already been confirmed, as well as overseas T20 leagues. “I want to continue playing cricket for two or three years,” he was quoted as saying by . “There are some exciting youngsters who are coming through the ranks of Uttar Pradesh cricket. I have already taken my No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA). Raina played 226 ODIs, 78 T20Is and 18 Tests for India, and was part of the squad that won the ODI World Cup in 2011. He was the first Indian batter to score a century in all three international formats.

South Australia made light work of their chase of 145, cruising to an eight-wicket victory on the third day against Victoria at the MCG. In a low-scoring game on a greenish pitch, the target could have proven challenging but opener Tom Cooper set up the innings with 54 from 64 deliveries and Callum Ferguson (43 not out) and Travis Head (24 not out) brought it home. The only two wickets to fall were Mark Cosgrove, caught behind off Chris Tremain for 19, and Cooper, who was caught at gully off John Hastings. The Bushrangers had started the morning at 6 for 123 and added 40 runs for the loss of their last four wickets, with Joe Mennie (4 for 55) and Chadd Sayers (3 for 61) finishing off the tail. The win was not enough for South Australia to bump Victoria out of top place on the Sheffield Shield table, though the teams remain in the top two positions. Mennie also moved to the top of the Shield wicket tally, with 24 at 18.87 so far this summer.

Can defending champions win on Wankhede farewell?

Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders are the first teams to meet for the second time this IPL, and Mumbai are the only team to have defeated Knight Riders so far this season

The Preview by Sirish Raghavan27-Apr-2016

Match facts

Thursday, April 28, 2016
Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders have shared the last four IPL titles between them, and their previous matches have served as reminders of why that has been the case. Though Knight Riders had won three of their first four matches, the away win against Rising Pune Supergiants in their fifth match would have been particularly pleasing as it demonstrated that their batting depth can get them out of trouble when Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa fail. Similarly, Mumbai’s win over Kings XI Punjab in Mohali came on the back of a solid top-order showing despite Rohit Sharma’s duck. A strong bowling effort from their pacers made them just the third team – after Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils – to successfully defend a total this season. As these two star-studded teams begin to harness the depth of their resources, a clash between them is a mouth-watering prospect. They also become the first teams to meet for the second time this season. In their first meeting, at Eden Gardens, Mumbai convincingly gunned down a target of 188. They are the only team to have defeated Knight Riders so far this season. While Knight Riders will be itching to exact revenge, Mumbai will be desperate to win their last match at the Wankhede stadium this season. There is an interesting contrast between Mumbai’s pace-heavy bowling attack – led by Tim Southee, Mitchell McClenaghan and Jasprit Bumrah – and Knight Riders’ spin riches, featuring Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Shakib Al Hasan (with Brad Hogg in the wings). How these markedly different attacks shape up against each other will make for a fascinating sub-plot, with potentially significant implications on the result.

Form guide

Mumbai Indians: WLWLL (most recent matches first)
Kolkata Knight Riders: WWWLW

In the spotlight

Mumbai’s bowling has been driven by Tim Southee’s pace and swing, Mitchell McClenaghan’s aggression and Jasprit Bumrah’s excellent yorkers and variations. To the extent that spin has played a role, Krunal Pandya has shone, combining an economy rate of 6.57 with an average of 30.66. Harbhajan Singh, who is meant to be the lead spinner, has been largely ineffective, with an average of 62.66 and going at 8.54 runs an over. He has played all of Mumbai’s matches so far, but unless he can improve that record, there may be a temptation to look at other spin options.Andre Russell has had a fairly low-key start to the season. He has been expensive with the ball and has had only one innings of substance – a 17-ball 36 against Mumbai – with the bat. Knight Riders already have a wide base of players that are performing but if Russell can hit form as well, that would be a massive boost to the side’s balance and destructive potential.

Team news

Jerome Taylor has been drafted into Mumbai’s squad in place of the injured Lasith Malinga, but is unlikely to break into the XI just yet, considering the fine performances of Mumbai’s pacers. Mumbai might consider giving Corey Anderson a game, perhaps at the expense of the out-of-form Kieron Pollard. Pollard has scored just 71 runs at 17.75 in six innings and leaked 36 runs in three overs on the two occasions he has bowled.Mumbai Indians (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Ambati Rayudu, 4 Jos Buttler, 5 Kieron Pollard/Corey Anderson, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Mitchell McClenaghan, 11 Jasprit BumrahHaving shown their batting depth, Knight Riders might be inclined to stick with the same XI.Kolkata Knight Riders (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir (capt), 2 Robin Uthappa (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Yusuf Pathan, 6 Andre Russell, 7 R Sathish, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Morne Morkel

Pitch and conditions

The Wankhede Stadium is generally full of runs. The three matches played here so far have yielded progressively higher first-innings totals, with 170 scored in the last match, on April 20. On all three occasions, the totals have been successfully chased down. The forecast is for a hot day, with temperatures expected to hit 36C, and no rain. Given the success teams chasing have enjoyed, and dew potentially being a factor later in the evening, bowling first would presumably be the way to go.

Stats and trivia

  • Mumbai’s average opening stand of 12.14 is the lowest among all teams in this IPL
  • Of the eight batsmen with 200-plus runs so far this year, Gambhir has hit the fewest sixes (2). He also has the second-lowest strike rate (123.43) among those batsmen, after Ambati Rayudu (121.91)

Cairns' wife denies match-fixing conversation took place

Mel Cairns, the wife of former New Zealand allrounder Chris Cairns, has denied that an alleged discussion about match-fixing in a Manchester bar ever took place

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Nov-2015Mel Cairns, the wife of former New Zealand allrounder Chris Cairns, has denied that an alleged discussion about match-fixing in a Manchester bar ever took place. The jury in Chris Cairns’ perjury trial had previously been told about a night out in Manchester in 2008, when Eleanor Riley, the former wife of Lou Vincent, one of the main prosecution witnesses, gave evidence that Cairns had said he was confident he would get away with fixing because “everyone was doing it in India”.Mel Cairns, who was appearing via video link, was present on the night, which involved several hours of drinking. Asked by Cairns’ barrister Orlando Pownall, QC, whether there had been any discussion of fixing, she replied: “Absolutely not.”Vincent was playing for Lancashire at the time, having previously been involved with the Indian Cricket League (ICL) alongside Cairns, where he said he was under “direct orders” to fix matches.Chris Cairns is accused of perjury and perverting the course of justice during his 2012 libel case against Lalit Modi. He denies all charges.Mel and Chris Cairns met in 2008, when he was still married to his previous wife. They subsequently lived together in Dubai, where Cairns has said he was looking to get involved in the diamond trade. The couple were married in 2010 and have two children. It was put to Mel Cairns by the crown prosecutor, Sasha Wass, QC, that she was lying to protect her husband. Wass had previously alleged that the money Cairns was paid by an Indian diamond company was “a reward for fixing cricket matches”.Mel Cairns said: “I would never lie to help my husband in court.”An Australian who played college basketball in the US, Mel Cairns works with professional athletes in sports marketing and management. She said she “absolutely would not have a relationship” with Chris Cairns if match-fixing had been discussed after they had first met.Mel Cairns was giving evidence over video from the couple’s home in Canberra because she said they could not afford for her to travel, although she had wanted to be with Cairns during the trial, which began more than four weeks ago.”It broke my heart to watch Chris walk every day, alone to and from court, and knowing he was going home alone by himself,” she said. The trial continues.

Ben Compton beds in once more as Zak Crawley shows hint of form

England batter makes half-century as partner grinds out fourth hundred

ECB Reporters Network19-May-2022Kent 286 for 2 (Compton 125*, Bell-Drummond 83, Crawley 62) vs NorthamptonshireZak Crawley went some way to justifying his England Test call-up as he collected his highest LV= Insurance County Championship score of the season, but it was his opening partner Ben Compton who once again made the bigger impression.Eyebrows were raised in some quarters when Kent batter Crawley was named in the squad to face New Zealand next month having averaged under 20 in eight Championship innings in 2022.But he impressed with a controlled 62, before Compton continued his annus mirabilis by creeping to his fourth century, and seventh score over 50, this season.Compton ended the day unbeaten on 125 as Kent rang up 286 for two on a batting-friendly day one at Wantage Road. All eyes were on Crawley after Ricardo Vasconcelos had put Kent in on a wicket which looked like and proved to be good for batting. The first ball he faced was pulled forcefully to the boundary, he edged his second ball just short of second slip before another four off his hips. The all-action opening slowed into a more sedate pace as both Crawley and Compton left and defended the ball with great skill, albeit with little movement assisting the bowlers. Crawley was particularly patient outside his off stump, with his rare cover drives checked rather than flailed to the rope.Crawley’s half-century, his second of a disappointing campaign, came in 75 balls, with the opening duo putting on 93. Crawley edged Kelly behind when not committing to either a drive or defence just after lunch to give Northamptonshire hope of a profitable afternoon. That did not transpire.Compton has been one of county cricket’s finds of the season, having made his Championship debut this season after a spell at Nottinghamshire. While the 28-year-old’s style isn’t aesthetically pleasing, his numbers are incredible and are a testament to his technique and mentality. In Division One he is: the leading runscorer (795), scored the most centuries (four), faced the most balls (1,960) and clocked up the most boundaries (98). He has now batted for 43 hours and 12 minutes, and has blocked out 1,534 dot balls – in fact, he has faced more dot balls than second-highest facer Sam Hain has seen total balls. It took him 53 minutes to reach double figures at Wantage Road with his fifty coming in 131 deliveries. There were moments of lucidity, namely a couple of cover drives and a pull which he thought had taken him to three figures. It quickly emerged the scorers had miscounted and he was forced to celebrate his century a second time, this time after a sweep shot.Daniel Bell-Drummond had replaced Crawley and simply kept the runs steadily amassing in the afternoon, as Northamptonshire dreamed of the second new ball. Bell-Drummond reached his third fifty of the season, but for the first time he couldn’t convert. He was dropped on 77 by Emilio Gay at second slip, as the second new ball offered more movement than the first, but edged to first slip in the following over for 83. Kent suffered no further causalities as Jack Leaning and Compton remained resolute.
