LFC plan contract for ‘world-class’ player

Liverpool are planning to offer midfielder Naby Keita a new contract before his current deal expires, according to a report which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Keita’s contract running down

The 27-year-old has proven to be a hit-and-miss figure in a Reds shirt since joining from RB Leipzig in 2018, splitting opinion within the fanbase.

Keita’s current Liverpool deal expires at the end of this season, which means he could leave on a free transfer next summer if he hasn’t extended his stay at Anfield by then.

While some may naturally expect the Guinean to leave, recent reports suggests quite the opposite.

The Latest: New deal incoming?

According to The Mirror, Liverpool are ‘keen’ on handing Keita a new deal at the club, even though he has ‘failed to live up to’ expectations to this point.

There is no mention of how long the contract would be for, but it certainly looks as though Jurgen Klopp would rather keep hold of the 27-year-old.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

The Verdict: Too injury-prone

If true, this is a strange stance from the club at this point, with Keita continually showing that he is too injury-prone to be relied upon, making just 72 starts in four-and-a-bit years at Liverpool.

The African is undoubtedly a talented footballer who can be hugely effective when fit – Virgil van Dijk has described him as ‘world-class’, while he chipped in with a vital goal against Newcastle in the final weeks of last season – but giving big money to a player who is all too often unavailable makes no sense.

[freshpress-poll id=“399042″]

It is a sad state of affairs, considering that Keita came in as such a big prospect in 2018.

However, the move simply hasn’t worked out, and unless some changes hugely with his fitness in the coming months, next year feels like the right time to let him leave.

Leeds: Paul Robinson reacts to Kalvin Phillips return speculation

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has rubbished any suggestions of one-time Elland Road idol Kalvin Phillips returning to the club.

The Lowdown: Agbonlahor’s claim

The midfielder moved to Manchester City over the summer but has struggled for game-time under Pep Guardiola. The 26-year-old has played just 13 competitive minutes at the Etihad Stadium this season and now looks set for a spell on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.

His slow start to life in Manchester led to Gabby Agbonlahor claiming last week that Phillips should be loaned back to Elland Road, and Robinson has been giving his thoughts on the former Aston Villa striker’s suggestion.

The Latest: Robinson’s comments

Talking to MOT Leeds News, the 42-year-old – who also contributes for Sky Sports – had this to say on Phillips and a potential return to Elland Road in light of Agbonlahor’s comments:

“For him personally, it’s a new challenge and a new step. He’s got off to a slow start but you don’t judge him at the first sign of trouble.

“He’s a fantastic player and he’s not even had an opportunity at Manchester City. He’s had a couple of niggling injuries and that’s stopped him from the opportunity to keep going.

“You don’t go to a club of that size and after three or four weeks decide it’s not working and go back again.

“He’s a player of huge ability and huge quality and it’s only a matter of time before he makes his mark on that Man City team.

“He’s against one of the best players in the world – Rodri – to get into that team and with the way they play, there’s only room for one of them. Kalvin will get in that team eventually.

“There’s an option for him to play in a three at the back, there’s an option for him to play in midfield. But he’s part of a huge squad so there’s no way in the world he should be considering going back to Leeds.

“He’s earned himself that fantastic move and it will come to fruition at some point.”

The Verdict: Not happening

It is a shame to see that Phillips’ move to the Etihad hasn’t worked out so far, but it looks as if injury has played a big part in his absence instead of being snubbed by Guardiola.

Hopefully the 26-year-old will return in good time for the World Cup and duly break into the Man City team regularly during the second half of the season.

A move back to Elland Road could well materialise towards the end of his career, but for the immediate future, we’re with Robinson in believing that the midfielder should be focusing solely on impressing in Manchester.

Man City: Laporte was real hero v Newcastle

Manchester City moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium.

Two goals from Raheem Sterling as well as an dazzling display from captain Kevin De Bruyne stood out, but it was the impressive performance from defender Aymeric Laporte that stole the show, with the Spain international even getting in on the action and scoring a goal himself.

The result sees The Citizens move even closer to a fourth Premier League title in five years, and their resilient defensive performance certainly allowed their forward line to roam free and dominate an in-form Newcastle side.

What makes it even more extraordinary is the fact that they were without two key defenders for the clash. Both Kyle Walker and John Stones were absent from the squad after suffering injuries during City’s recent Champions League semi-final 6-5 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid.

A key highlight of Laporte’s performance was his one on one defending, with the 27-year-old winning 100% of his duels, all of which were in the air.

He also achieved a pass accuracy percentage of 96% proving that he can be just as reliable on the ground. After that performance, it’s hard to see why Guardiola should drop him even when John Stones returns to fitness. He has featured 29 times in the Premier League this season which is up significantly from the 16 games he appeared in last season.

Up until now, Pep has seemed to have preferred the partnership of Ruben Dias and Stones, but Laporte was his hero today and leaves him with a dilemma.

Given the number of competitions that City are always involved in there is enough game time for everyone, but if he thinks he’s good enough to start and he’s left on the bench then he may eventually seek more game time elsewhere.

Laporte’s overall SofaScore rating for the match was 7.5 which was the highest of all the defenders and beaten by only Sterling, De Bruyne and Rodri. He produced when given the opportunity and has shown that he is capable of fighting for the two available spots.

He may not grab the headlines tomorrow, but we think he was the best player on the pitch.

Everton: Source makes Clement Lenglet claim

Everton are interested in signing Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, according to Spanish sources.

The lowdown: Lenglet’s career so far

Signed for £31.7m from fellow La Liga outfit Sevilla (Sky Sports), the French centre-back played 45 times in 2018/19 as Barca lifted the Spanish title.

Overall, Lenglet has made 157 appearances for the Catalan giants, adding the Copa Del Rey and Spanish Super Cup to his trophy cabinet in the process.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, a move away from Barcelona could now be on the cards for the France international…

The lowdown: Everton interested in Lenglet

As per the Spanish outlet, Everton are among three clubs in the running to sign Lenglet this summer.

The report claims that a return to Sevilla or a move to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur could also be on the cards for the 26-year-old.

It is claimed that, if Everton can avoid relegation this season, Toffees manager Frank Lampard ‘wants’ the man who France head coach Didier Deschamps hailed as ‘world class’ following a 4-1 victory over Albania.

The verdict: No-brainer

Adding the 15-cap France defender to the squad at Goodison Park would be a superb piece of business this summer, particularly in light of what has been a leaky Everton defence at times during the 2021/22 campaign.

Despite seemingly being surplus to requirements under Xavi at Camp Nou beyond this term, Lenglet has still made 24 appearances across all competitions. That includes four starts in the Champions League as the Frenchman earned a 6.95 average Sofascore rating for his performances, winning 1.5 tackles per game.

Following yet another injury setback to Yerry Mina and the decline in form of Michael Keane, signing the Barcelona man – who is a close match for Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano stylistically (FBRef) – seems a no-brainer for Lampard.

Sunderland: Alex Neil must unleash Embleton

Sunderland have put themselves in a prime position to earn promotion to the Championship next season after progressing to the play-off final at Wembley against Wycombe Wanderers this month.

Since Alex Neil arrived in February, he has transformed the team and gone unbeaten in 16 of his 17 games in charge, deservedly earning their golden opportunity to get back into the second tier of English football, and supporters are surely delighted with the progress the Black Cats have made in the last few months.

That being said, the 40-year-old can only take partial credit for the impressive performances we have seen come from the Black Cats over the last few months, with some players offering huge match-winning moments which have led their team to victory and put them in a position to challenge for a place in the Championship next season.

One player in particular who has been a formidable driving force for Sunderland in the latter stages of the campaign is Elliot Embleton, who has provided game-changing performances towards the end of the season which won them vital points in their pursuit of a place in the play-offs.

The midfielder, who was dubbed a “class act” by Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, was integral in Sunderland’s final few games of the League One campaign, with a winning goal against Oxford United and an assist for the winner against Gillingham earning the Black Cats vital points in the push for promotion.

Those decisive contributions earned the 23-year-old high praise from journalist Josh Bunting, who hailed the Sunderland ace as the “huge difference” in the team ahead of the last few fixtures of the season, tweeting: “He’s made a huge difference and has contributed to 6 points that may be crucial at the end of the season.”

With eight goals and eight assists in 47 appearances this term from his role in the middle of the park, there is no doubt that the young midfielder has a huge future at Sunderland and should be unleashed in the starting line-up more often whether or not the Black Cats rise to the Championship next season.

Newcastle: Dean Henderson links downplayed

A major update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and Dean Henderson ahead of the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Shields Gazette journalist Dominic Scurr has revealed that the Magpies have poured cold water on reports that the England international is set to arrive at St. James’ Park.

He tweeted: “Reports suggesting #MUFC goalkeeper Dean Henderson is on the verge of completing a move to #NUFC. But sources at Newcastle have been quick to play down the story.”

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards followed this up with a tweet of his own, saying: “#nufc will not be signing goalkeeper Dean Henderson anytime soon.”

This comes after Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News claimed that the shot-stopper was close to signing for the Tyneside club and had travelled to the northeast for talks.

Supporters will be gutted

Magpies supporters will be gutted with this latest update, as it suggests that Henderson is not on his way Newcastle this summer. A deal has not been completely ruled out but the tweets from Kelly and Edwards do not make it sound like the 25-year-old is an active target for the club at this moment in time.

He is a proven top-flight performer and a player who could be a major signing for Eddie Howe for many years to come, which is why Toon fans will likely not be happy with this news.

In 48 Premier League appearances, the 25-year-old kept 17 clean sheets across the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns. He averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.00 for Sheffield United and 6.94 for the Red Devils respectively, which shows that he maintained a high standard of performance throughout both seasons in the top flight.

This means that he would likely be able to hit the ground running for Newcastle, as he knows exactly what it takes to perform at this level. He has recent experience of putting in excellent displays on a regular basis in the Premier League, which suggests that he would provide significant competition to Martin Dubravka for his place in the Newcastle team.

At the age of 25, Henderson also has plenty of time left in his career to develop and improve even further. He is eight years younger than the Slovakia international, and the Manchester United shot-stopper has the potential to be Howe’s number one for the next decade if he moves to St James’ Park and proves to be a success on the pitch.

Therefore, Magpies fans will surely be gutted by the club pouring cold water on claims that he is set to join them…

Spurs: Romano drops Romero update

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on the future of Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cristian Romero.

What’s the talk?

In a recent post on Twitter, the Italian journalist revealed that Fabio Paratici is set to activate Tottenham’s £40m clause to turn the centre-back’s season-long loan deal a permanent move in the coming days, with the 24-year-old said to have already penned a deal lasting until the summer of 2026.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Concerning Spurs’ deal for Romero, the transfer insider said: “Tottenham will activate £40m obligation to buy clause in the coming days for Cristian Romero. ‘Signing of the season’, according to Jamie Carragher. Fabio Paratici wanted him as key player and Romero will be part of the project – he has already signed until June 2026.”

Supporters will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Romero was for Tottenham this season, Romano’s claim that Paratici and Daniel Levy are set to make the defender’s move permanent in the very near future is sure to have left the Spurs faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over his 22 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, the £60m-rated centre-back proved a revelation in the Tottenham backline, helping his side keep five clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 2.8 tackles, 3.3 clearances and winning 5.9 duels – at a success rate of 62% – per game.

These returns saw the £31k-per-week talent average a rather sensational SofaScore match rating of 7.15, ranking him as Antonio Conte’s best-performing defender and sixth-best player overall in the top flight of English football.

Furthermore, according to FBref data, the Argentina international also ranks in the top 1% of centre-backs in Europe’s big five leagues for tackles made per 90, in addition to the top 3% for pressures, the top 6% for blocks, the top 10% for interceptions, the top 11% for dribbles completed, the top 16% for progressive carries and the top 20% for shot-creating actions.

As such, it is clear for all to see just how talented a player Romero is, with the 24-year-old very much appearing to be a player who Conte can build his Tottenham backline around in the summer transfer window – something that leads us to believe the news Paratici looks set to sanction the £40m purchase of the centre-back is fantastic for everyone involved with Spurs.
