“Ao capitão do Deca e família: me sinto envergonhado.

Hampshire leave bottom spot with an Edwards swagger

Hampshire followed up Fidel Edwards’ ferocious second-evening spell by beating Sussex and telling the West Indian quick they had never seen anything faster

Hampshire have secured their first Championship win of the season with a six-wicket win at Hove, a ground that has now hosted its third three-day result game in a row. But this was nothing to do with the pitch: the visitors put together their best performance of the season, typified by Fidel Edwards’ first five-wicket haul for the county.Edwards’ 5 for 58 was not only Hampshire’s first five-for of the season, but it was also his first since taking 6 for 90 in a Test against Bangladesh, back in November 2012. That match in Khulna was his last for the West Indies across all formats and, in signing as a Kolpak player, at the age of 32, it seems that his international days are behind him. This will be his last four-day game for Hampshire before he jets off to the Caribbean Premier League on Sunday. His spell yesterday was a reminder of the confrontational attitude he used to save for the world’s best. The “you can’t see me” celebration: the hair is grown out but the swagger remains. His skipper Jimmy Adams said his spell at the end of day two was the fastest he had ever seen in domestic cricket, a point backed up by the rest of the Hampshire team, who told Edwards as much in the dressing room.Fidel on making big waves

On helping Hampshire secure their first Championship win at Hove in the last nine attempts “I’ve heard we hadn’t won here for a long time, so that’s good. The pitch was quick but not as quick as thought it would be. It was good though to bowl with the wind behind me. That’s my job – I’m here to get at batsman, bowl fast and get people out!”

On his Hampshire future beyond 2015: “I signed a Kolpak deal for Hampshire and hopefully I can extend that for the next couple of years. That’s my aim. Hampshire have a lot of West Indian greats playing for them so hopefully I can do my best to join that bunch.”

On his speed: “When I was younger, I was clocked a couple of times, when I first started, at around 96 or 97mph. Hopefully I can still bend my back like that at this age.

On his first experience of the English domestic season: “It’s been lovely – just a bit cold and wet! I’m looking to see what the sunshine can do and it was good to see a bit today. Last night, I went for a walk by the sea and it was terrible! The waves were kicking and I was right next to the sea! But it’s a good experience to be here and experience the cold for so long.”

Edwards was so quick last night that, when Wright decided to take him on, Adams moved one of his slips to a back-stop position for the top-edge. “I hadn’t set a field like that before – maybe not since my under-10s,” laughed Adams at the close. He confirmed the decision was Edwards and he was more than happy to oblige him.Edwards’ fifth wicket came this morning when he removed nightwatchman Steve Magoffin with his fourth ball before both he and Jackson Bird were put under pressure by Luke Wright and Ben Brown. Bird in particular, in his first Championship game of a season that has already been hampered with shoulder and neck injuries, struggled throughout the match.Having started the morning session from the Sea End, Bird switched to the Cromwell Road to calamitous effect. His first four overs went for 28, with his first going for 12, as Brown took him for three consecutive boundaries. It seemed that Wright and Brown could milk him easily until the new ball. Earlier, Brown had benefited from a poor drop from Danny Briggs, who shelled a routine catch with the batsman on 13, when he ran around to square leg for a top edge that would have given Edwards his sixth wicket. The joint hundred came off 164 balls as the complexion of the game started to change. And then, with the lead standing at 122, it happened: the first of two brain-fades that led to a lower-order collapse of four for four. The first came from Brown, who decided to take a risky single to the last ball of a Bird over that had already leaked 11 runs. He hit the ball to the left of cover, Will Smith, who ran around the ball to pick-up right-handed and throw down the stumps with Wright short of his ground.Brown’s misery was compounded when he became the recipient of what must have been Bird’s best ball of the match: a good-to-full length ball that jumped up to say hello and take the top of his glove, giving Sean Ervine a simple low catch at first slip. He sunk to his knees as Bird streamed past him, before returning to the pavilion flanked by the rest of those on the pitch as lunch was taken early.Ollie Robinson was the next to go, failing to take note of a deep square leg and finding him perfectly, just nine balls after the restart. With him went any realistically possible of quick runs, leaving Briggs to take his first wicket of the innings – caught bat-pad – to finish Sussex off. With just 125 to defend, it was Magoffin or bust for the home side. Their lead man ran in, unchanged for eight overs, from the Cromwell Road End. Bats were beaten, an edge fell short of Ed Joyce at first slip and a length was pounded, but to no avail.Jimmy Adams hit a quick 30 from 33 balls, seemingly trying to throttle the nerves out of the chase. When he departed with 51 on the board, in the 12th over, the runs came at a slower pace. Sean Terry, in his second game of the season, got some valuable time in the middle on his way to a first Championship half-century of the season and a career best in first-class cricket.Terry can take pride in the fact that he carried his bat through this chase, while more senior heads came and went. He’ll have a bruised thumb as a souvenir, for a week or so at least, after he was clocked by a sharp one from Hobden. But he and Hampshire will take that, as they finally get a win on the board.

Former NZ offspinner Petherick dies aged 72

Petherick was one of only three bowlers – Maurice Allom and Damien Fleming being the others – to take a hat-trick on Test debut

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jun-2015Peter Petherick, the former offspinner who became the first New Zealand player to take a Test hat-trick, has died in Perth aged 72.Petherick was one of only three bowlers – Maurice Allom and Damien Fleming being the others – to take a hat-trick on Test debut, against Pakistan in 1976. He also remains one of only two New Zealand bowlers to take a Test hat-trick, along with James Franklin.Making his Test debut at the age of 34, with only one first-class season behind him, Petherick claimed his hat-trick in the first innings in Lahore. He had Javed Miandad – who was also on debut – caught top-edging a pull shot, before Wasim Raja send Petherick a return catch and Intikhab Alam was caught at silly point to complete the feat.Petherick finished with a match haul of five wickets, but New Zealand lost the Test by six wickets. His brief Test career lasted six games in which he took 16 wickets at an average of 42.56. Only one of those Tests came at home – against Australia in Auckland – while the others were played in Pakistan and India. It was not only Petherick’s hat-trick that made his story remarkable, for he had not played first-class cricket until the age of 33. He was working as a mechanic when he was called up for his Otago debut in the summer of 1975-76, and his debut season brought 42 first-class wickets at 20.16, including 9 for 93 in an innings against Northern Districts in a Shell Cup match. He was part of an Otago team that won the Shell Trophy in 1976-77, before his transfer to Wellington in 1978. Petherick’s first-class career ended in 1981, after 52 matches and 189 wickets. He played two List A games in the 1978-79 and 1980-81 seasons.”Most of his bowling was flight and guile and he had a wee bit of outswing with his slower arm ball,” Petherick’s former team-mate and New Zealand wicketkeeper Warren Lees told the . “There was minimal effort in his run-up, it was a three-metre shuffle to the wicket.”After his retirement from cricket, Petherick became a successful lawn bowls player who competed at the national championships in 2006.

Important that I held up one end – Uthappa

Robin Uthappa, who has had to adapt to a middle-order role in the Zimbabwe tour, was pleased with his contribution – a 35-ball 39- to the team in the first T20I

Liam Brickhill in Harare17-Jul-20154:06

‘Won’t call this a second-string India side’ – Uthappa

Robin Uthappa has not had the easiest tour of Zimbabwe, but his returns with the bat have been steadily increasing since his duck in the first ODI, and his 39 not out in the first T20I helped to boost India to an unassailable 178 for 5.”I missed out in that first game, a judgement call, and the second one was towards the end, so it could have gone either way as well,” Uthappa said. “The third game I should have consolidated, but made one error. A lot of hard work, and eventually one error cost me. But I’m feeling good since I’ve come here. I was glad I was able to bat through for the team today and set up that good total. It was quite a challenging wicket to bat on, so I’m pretty happy with the way I performed today.”India were helped by 25 extras from a loose Zimbabwean attack, but it was evident that the pitch did not immediately lend itself to strokeplay. India were also pegged back by seamer Chris Mpofu’s wickets at the death, but Uthappa’s innings ensured that the good work in the opening overs was not entirely undone.”I thought it was a very good score, given the wicket. The wicket was again very slow. Not like the T20 wickets that you play on all around the world. Generally when you play T20 cricket you get good flat, even tracks that help the bowlers and the batsmen, and basically are even: if the bowlers bowl well then you get wickets, and if the batters bat well they get runs. This was quite different. It was slow and low, hard to score runs and hard to score boundaries.”You had to depend on the twos and make sure you back yourself. And you also know that it’s not easy for the new batsman to come in and play shots, you’ve got to give yourself time. So it was important for me to hold one end up for the side. I realized that once Manish got out, we needed one batsman to bat through. I was very happy to do that for the team.”Uthappa has had to adapt to a somewhat different role in this side to that which he is used to, batting in the middle order rather than opening, but the general trend of his results in this series suggests that the work he has been doing with batting consultant Pravin Amre may be paying off.”Yeah, I think he’s done a lot for me,” Uthappa said of Amre. “I’m happy with the way I’m playing right now, and my game is kind of set. I think I’m not batting in my regular position. I’m an opening batsman but I’ve been batting in the middle order, so it’s quite different for me, and I’ve been trying to adjust myself.”Through the year in domestic cricket, in the IPL, or otherwise I’m always opening the batting and so suddenly when you have to play in the middle order you have to be more flexible. Make slight adjustments, because your preparation is different.”For me, just to wait to bat is very different because I like to get in there and set the foundation for the side. But here you’re going into a situation that’s already set for you. It’s quite different in the middle order. But I’m getting the hang of it. I’m learning as I go. The more I play the better I’ll get at it.”India fielded five T20 international debutants in the match, but Uthappa suggested that the squad’s extensive experience in the format outside of the international arena meant that the new faces were quite at home, and that nerves were “absolutely not” an issue.”We play so much of T20 cricket, all of us must have played 100 games each in the IPL, and there the pressure is a lot more. There’s more of a crowd, you want to perform, you’re playing the best players in the world. You’re already basically cooked when you’re coming in here, so you’re ready for it.”Uthappa also rejected the idea that India had sent a ‘second string’ side to Zimbabwe, insisting that every member of the squad deserved to play for the country. “I think we have a pool of 25 players, and all of us deserve to play for the country, it’s just that you cannot carry more than 15 in a side,” he said. “So unfortunately the rest of us kind of miss out. I wouldn’t say we’re less talented, or we can’t do as well in international cricket, I just think that the guys who are in there have done well for themselves when they got the opportunity.”It’s hard to leave those players out and play us. We need to take our chances when they come our way. I would never call us a second string side, because the kind of talent that we have in our pool, I think that we’re pretty good for the next 10 to 15 years.”

Bangladesh bowlers flatten UAE to defend 133

Like Sri Lanka on Thursday, Bangladesh were given a scare by UAE before their efficient bowling attack led the hosts to an easy win in Mirpur

The Report by Mohammad Isam in Mirpur26-Feb-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:12

Bangladesh stamp their dominance

Like Sri Lanka on Thursday, Bangladesh were given a scare by UAE before their efficient bowling attack led the hosts to an easy win in Mirpur. Mahmudullah’s last-gasp effort with the bat and two wickets were backed up by Mustafizur Rahman and Mashrafe Mortaza. Their wickets shook the opposition’s confidence to a point from which they never recovered. The win keeps the hosts alive in the Asia Cup, but they would have liked a more comfortable path to picking up the two points. They collapsed from 72 for 1 in the tenth over to 133 for 8, and it was their bowling that proved to be too strong for a spirited UAE, who became the first side to be bowled out by Bangladesh in a chase.Except for the first nine odd overs in the Bangladesh innings, batting didn’t seem easy. The Bangladesh batsmen committed one mistake after another before UAE struggled for 17.4 overs in their chase.UAE’s pursuit of 134 began ominously when Soumya Sarkar dropped a simple chance off Rohan Mustafa’s bat in the first over. Al-Amin Hossain removed Muhammad Kaleem in the next over and Mustafa survived another chance in the fourth over when Mustafizur Rahman was judged to have grounded the ball in his attempt to take a return catch.Mustafa fell to Mashrafe Mortaza in the next over, caught at short third-man, Mustafizur completing the simpler catch. Shaiman Anwar was well caught at point by Mahmudullah in Mashrafe’s next over before it was Mustafizur’s turn to take a brace in one over.He first took a simple return catch with an off-cutter that left Mohammad Shahzad dumb-founded. Next ball, Swapnil Patil did the same thing, the only difference was that his top-edge carried to mid-on where Mashrafe took an easy catch. The chase spun out of control for UAE. Their captain Amjad Javed slipped on to his stumps in the 11th over before newcomer Fahad Tariq ran past a slow Shakib Al Hasan delivery and was stumped by Nurul Hasan. Saqlain Haider drove Mahmudullah straight to cover as they sank to 55 for 8 in the 13th over. Muhammad Usman resisted briefly before he was beaten by extra seam movement from Taskin Ahmed after a run-a-ball 30 that included two fours and as many sixes.UAE’s bowling, however, continued to impress. Mohammad Naveed and Javed took two wickets each, with the former only giving away 12 runs in his four overs. Shahzad and Mustafa also took one apiece but the most impactful bowler was Ahmed Raza with his four tight overs of left-arm spin. Raza has now bowled three straight games without conceding a boundary, and his 0 for 17 today backed up economical returns against Oman and Sri Lanka.Bangladesh’s batting had plenty in common with Sri Lanka’s effort on Thursday. Both teams sped off to good starts before they were slowed down by spin and collapsed in the middle overs to have very little chance of a late flourish. The significant difference was the 17 runs that Mahmudullah took in the final over to give Bangladesh some confidence at the break.Sarkar and Mohammad Mithun started off with 46 runs in 5.2 overs before Sarkar holed out to mid-on for 21 off 14 balls. The dismissal came soon after he had struck a six over square leg.Bangladesh moved to 74 for 2 in ten overs but Raza and Mustafa were slowing them down. The collapse began in the 12th over when Mithun aimlessly took off for a single after the ball had trickled to the wicketkeeper Patil off an inside edge. A maiden T20I fifty was left on the table for Mithun who ended up on 47 off 41 balls with four boundaries and couple of sixes over the leg side.Mushfiqur Rahim’s wave at a short, wide, hit-me ball took the outside edge in the next over before Shakib missed Javed’s high full-toss and was clean bowled. Big-hitters Nurul and Mashrafe gave catches to long-on and long-off next, before Mahmudullah ran hard for a trio of twos, sweetly timed a four and hammered a six in the last over to get his team to a respectable 133.
