'This win is a sign of the team's character' – Mills

Kyle Mills, the New Zealand acting captain, has said his team’s remarkable chase in Hambantota was a win borne of fight

Kyle Mills, the New Zealand acting captain, has said his team’s remarkable chase in Hambantota was a win borne of fight, and reserved special praise for the innings’ of protagonist Tom Latham and the furious finish provided by Nathan McCullum. Pursuing 198 in the rain-reduced 23-over chase, New Zealand claimed victory off the last ball, taking a 1-0 lead in the series, with one match to play. Both batsmen had revived the chase when Sri Lanka appeared to have the match in their pockets. Twenty-one-year-old Latham held one end firm as wickets tumbled at the other in the first half of New Zealand’s innings, before launching a frenetic attack on Sri Lanka during the middle overs, alongside Luke Ronchi. His 86 off 68 was his first fifty in 12 ODI innings.”In my mind this win is a sign of the character we have in this group,” Mills said. “We fought pretty hard in this game. Tom Latham played a great hand for us. For a guy so young, he played a very mature innings and never lost his head in any situation. The other guys chipped in – I thought what Colin Munro did brought a momentum shift even though he didn’t get a big score, Luke Ronchi played exceptionally well, and then to have Nathan to come out at the end and take the game by the scruff of the neck was huge for us.”McCullum’s hand in the victory was in many ways just as crucial as Latham’s contributions, and perhaps more dramatic. He arrived at the crease when Latham and Ronchi had fallen in quick succession, seemingly surrendering the result to Sri Lanka. McCullum first hit two fours in Lasith Malinga’s penultimate over, before providing the game’s most arresting sequence. Needing 17 to win from the last four balls, McCullum walloped Rangana Herath for a six, then a four, then two more sixes, to complete the win.”It was going to be a tough ask to hit 20 off the last over,” Mills said. “Nathan McCullum showed great intent as soon as he arrived at the wicket, and he has been hitting the ball reasonably well in the nets. He’s a guy who’s a bit of a scrapper and a fighter. If you want to put any guy in that situation, you probably want to put Nathan McCullum there. He played Malinga with nice intent, and I’m sure it was nice for him personally to have made such a remarkable contribution.”Ronchi and Latham had already been to Sri Lanka with the A team in the past two months, and had both also recently played in India and Bangladesh, on an extended tour of the subcontinent. Mills said their knowledge of local conditions and bowlers likely contributed to their 93-run match-turning stand. Luke Ronchi’s 49 was also his highest score for New Zealand, though he has hit an ODI fifty for Australia in the past.”It helped that they were on the pretty extensive A programme that New Zealand Cricket put in place. They had some time over here in Sri Lanka and got used to conditions. I think they had a lot of composure out there in the middle tonight. It was a tough situation for them and it was the partnership that won us the game. I’m also pleased for Luke that he got a score on the board.”Before this match Mills had expressed confidence in his team’s ability to chase tall scores, and though Sri Lanka set up an imposing total through Kumar Sangakkar and Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mills said the visitors felt comfortable with the score they were made to chase.”In the last T20 game we played, we chased a big total, and our batters were in a bit of form. The game before that we hit a big total – over 300 against Bangladesh, in an ODI. Observing the guys in the nets in the past few days, I knew there were quite a few guys who were in form and seeing the ball well. After a slow start we saw a bit of composure there from the group. It just goes to show that with the introduction of T20 cricket in the last few years, it gives batters the confidence to chase any total down.”

Friendly foes await Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka’s fickle cricketing landscape, Pakistan have lately been viewed as one of the friendliest foes

Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Dec-2013

Sri Lanka’s tour of UAE will begin with two Twenty20s under Dinesh Chandimal•AFP

In Sri Lanka’s fickle cricketing landscape, Pakistan have lately been viewed as one of the team’s friendliest foes. Sri Lanka fans’ admiration for Pakistan’s cricket has been founded on shared ground. Most obviously, there is resemblance in cricketing philosophy; Lasith Malinga and Sohail Tanvir are products of their unique milieu, but it is not difficult to imagine a round-arm slinger from Rawalpindi, or a wrong-footed left armer from Rathgama. No other nation, perhaps, could have easily produced either. There is also the rich recent history of spin, shrouded in mystery. Between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, they have owned the progenitor of the in Saqlain Mushtaq, the man who made the ball famous in Muttiah Muralitharan, its best current practitioner in Saeed Ajmal, and a rising bowler with an improving version of the ball, in Sachithra Senanayake. Then there are the shambolic administrations, which more often appear to hinder the national sides than support them, while Sri Lanka’s newly-formed one-sided rivalry with India has bred another thread of fraternal goodwill. Coincidentally too, the tour will be both Dav Whatmore and Graham Ford’s final weeks in charge of their sides. The former was effectively let go, the latter chose to walk. Both sides also have produced alluring players of spin, many of whom have retired or are just about to, and young men are now charged with filling shoes and scoreboards. In that regeneration, though, there are mutual hints of decline.Ten months of selection policy focused on grooming the next generation has not future-proofed Sri Lanka’s batting unit yet. Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have had encouraging returns in Tests, but their limited-overs statistics don’t yet suggest they are the next Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara – whom they will inevitably be compared with. Jayawardene’s absence from the limited-overs leg of this series may allow both batsmen to bat higher up in the order, which should suit their abilities better than the finishing roles they had been saddled with.In Tests, both teams will also be fielding young, inexperienced opening pairs. Shan Masood and Khurram Manzoor are at almost identical places in their career as Sri Lanka’s likely openers, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva. All four have a shot at embedding themselves in the international arena, on tracks that should not be far from those on which they excel at home.Though they are at disparate ends of their careers, there are similarities for the teams’ main captains too. Misbah-ul-Haq is an unpopular captain for some, and while Angelo Mathews has had moderate success at the helm, he is still treading lightly as a leader and his personal form has been inconsistent. A poor tour for either man might have loosened their grip on the reins, only, there are few viable alternatives. The teams are well-matched on most counts. Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in their last Test series in the UAE, but Sri Lanka reversed that scoreline at home, when they dominated the three-match series last year. Sri Lanka’s batting perhaps gives them the edge in ODIs and Twenty20s, while Pakistan have just returned from a successful trip to South Africa, where the highly-rated India side is presently being humiliated. And, perhaps, that is Pakistan’s greatest advantage in the approach to the tour. While Sri Lanka have been reduced to playing matches against themselves and watching rain ruin their first meaningful cricket since July, Pakistan are fighting-fit from five months on the international treadmill. Their Test loss to Zimbabwe in September now seems a distant memory, after more encouraging results against South Africa.Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have not played overseas since July, and in Tests, the New Year’s Eve match will be their first against a top-eight opposition since this year’s New Year Test in Sydney. One of the foremost reasons Sri Lanka Cricket refused Pakistan’s request to play one Test under lights is because its players would already be adjusting to playing Tests again; an orange ball and floodlights may have complicated preparation further – particularly as there are no practice matches before the Tests. There is already buzz in Sri Lanka for this tour, primarily because the public has had so long to look forward to it. It is a stage for young men of both teams to make defining plays, and with two major limited-overs trophies now on the horizon, raising stakes further, the subplots unfolding over a six-week battle may prove just as engrossing as the major narrative.

KRL edge National Bank by two runs

A round-up of the Faysal Bank T20 Cup matches played on November 30, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Nov-2013Group AKhan Research Laboratories successfully defended their middling total of 127, just edging National Bank of Pakistan by two runs at Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. A thrilling contest decided in the final over – that required eight more runs with the two set batsmen in Hammad Azam (20) and Fawad Alam (20*) in the middle. An economical over by Yasir Ali, conceded just five runs and claimed a wicket, as National Bank were kept to 125. National Bank’s chase was nervy from the start. After ten overs, the score was 50, and despite Umar Waheed’s 32 off 20 balls, runs continued to dry up with Fawad at the other end. KRL, earlier, had chosen to bat first, with Naved Yasin (29) and Saeed Anwar junior (36) helping the side get a decent total on the board to defend.Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shoaib Malik both scored half-centuries to help Pakistan International Airlines beat State Bank of Pakistan by six wickets. The duo shared a 135-run stand for the third wicket to chase down 154 with four balls remaining. Malik remained unbeaten on 61 off 44 balls, with seven boundaries and a six, while Sarfaraz smashed 74 off 54 balls before being run-out. Earlier PIA opted to bowl first, brimming with confidence from an overnight show when they routed Pakistan TV by 10 wickets. However, Najaf Shah went wicketless in his four overs and conceded 41 runs. Aizaz Cheema finished with 2 for 19, but SBP went on to compile 154.United Bank Limited captain Tariq Haroon blasted a 25-ball 48, before medium-pacer Asif Raza finished with 4 for 16 to help the team to a comprehensive 38-run win over Pakistan Television in Lahore. Haroon’s knock, which included three fours and three sixes, helped United Bank build on the good start made by the openers Abid Ali and Ahsan Ali and power United Bank to 166 for 7 from their 20 overs. Pakistan TV, who were bundled out for 96 against Pakistan International Airlines on Friday, did not fare much better today, losing wickets regularly during the chase. Their only major contributions came from Zeeshan Mushtaq and Zohaib Ahmed, who made 41 and an unbeaten 52 respectively. But eight of their batsmen failed to reach double digits, as Raza ran through their line-up to restrict them to 128 for 8.Group BWater and Power Development Authority were comprehensively beaten by Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited by 10 wickets, after being bundled out for 64 in 17.1 overs – the lowest domestic Twenty20 total in Pakistan. Sui Gas, despite losing their openers, needed only 9.3 overs to overhaul this paltry score, with Mohammad Rizwan’s 16-ball 25 paving the way for an easy win.WAPDA, put in to bat, were shaky right from the start, and lost wickets at regular intervals. They were reeling at 29 for 5 at one stage, as the seamers Imran Ali and Mohammad Farman picked up two wickets apiece to run through WAPDA’s top order. Opener Muhammad Fayyaz and Ayaz Tasawwar were the only two batsmen to reach double digits, as the spinners Yasir Shah and Imran Khalid notched five scalps between them to remove the tail and set up an easy chase. The victory takes Sui Gas up to second in Group B. One more win against Habib Bank Limited on Sunday will secure their place in the semi-finals. WAPDA, however, are rooted at the bottom without a single win to their credit.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited continued to dominate their group, beating Port Qasim Authority by eight wickets at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The win meant they finished their pool matches unbeaten, leading the points table with eight points. PQA, laden with flamboyant batsmen, began poorly, being reduced on 18 for 4. Khurrum Manzoor (20 off 26) with Mohammad Waqas (27 off 39) tried to rescue the team from the early wobble, but could not kick on from their stars and they crumbled further till Mohammad Talha knocked off 40 in 18 balls to help the side post 114. Imran Nazir and Sharjeel Khan responded swiftly – the pair piled up 50 in five overs before both were removed by left-arm spinner Azam Hussain (2-16). Then Yasir Hameed and Haris Sohail took their time to settle in, but got the team home with 10 balls to spare.

Lyon a likely starter in Perth

Nathan Lyon is expected to retain his place for the third Test at the WACA, with the coach Darren Lehmann reluctant to ask too much of his fast bowlers

Nathan Lyon is expected to retain his place for the third Test at the WACA, with the coach Darren Lehmann reluctant to ask too much of his fast bowlers in the exceptionally hot weather expected in Perth over the next week. The forecast for the first three days is for top temperatures of 38C, before 39C on day four and 37C on the final day, and while the heat will bake the pitch and provide extra bounce and carry, it also has the potential to cook the fast bowlers.Australia have played an all-pace attack in two of the past three Perth Tests and succeeded on both occasions, against India in 2011-12 and in the most recent Ashes Test at the WACA in 2010-11. Last summer, Australia’s fast men took 16 wickets against South Africa and Lyon collected three in a heavy loss, but Lehmann said while consideration would be given to including James Faulkner, the more likely scenario was that Lyon would hold his place.”We’ll have to look at the wicket first and foremost, see what it’s like. If we think it warrants him [Faulkner] playing and the four quicks so be it,” Lehmann said. “But, look, it’s going to be hot weather here – it’s 35 and getting up to 40 on Monday – so we’ll probably … I think we’ll play the spinner. Again, we’ve got to work out who has pulled up fit from the last Test match, so good question. We’ll see what happens.”In addition to Faulkner, Australia also have Doug Bollinger and Nathan Coulter-Nile on hand as back-up pacemen. There was plenty of grass on the WACA wicket on Wednesday, two days out from the Test, but that was expected to be cut back before the match. The curator Matt Page, in charge of his first Test after the departure of his predecessor Cam Sutherland, said he expected the pitch to look whiter by the start of the match and he said it would be quicker than the early-season Sheffield Shield matches, and the surface on which England played their opening tour game of the trip.”With the weather we’re going to get – 37, 38 – it’s pretty conducive and will bake the surface and definitely help it go through better,” Page said. “I’m pretty confident there’ll be some pace and bounce. The last Shield games here have been quite good. I’m confident it will be exactly the same.”Mitchell Johnson claimed five wickets in a Shield match against South Australia at the WACA in early November and bowled with impressive intensity, in a foreshadowing of his Ashes performances over the first two Tests. But Page said Johnson could expect even more assistance from the surface for the Test than he did in that Shield game.”He only played one Shield game here – first game of the season – and he was pretty happy with it,” Page said. “I think this one will be quicker than that one was.”Spinning-wise you’ll get the footmarks day four, day five. You’ll get a bit of turn out of there. Spinners here normally get the bounce more than anything.”
