Cummins to travel with Australia A to England

Pat Cummins will travel with the Australia A party to England later this month, although he will not be part of the official squad, and is hoping to make a full return during the Australia A tour of South Africa in July

Pat Cummins hasn’t played a first-class match since his Test debut•AFP

At 18, Pat Cummins made his Test debut in Johannesburg and was Man of the Match. There could hardly have been a more exciting prospect in Australian sport at the time. Eighteen months later and Cummins, who turned 20 last week, has not only failed to add another Test to that eye-catching performance at the Wanderers, he hasn’t even played a first-class match since then. The teenager who looked like the future of Australian fast bowling has become its forgotten man.But slowly Cummins is making his way back. He will travel with the Australia A party to England later this month, although he will not be part of the official squad, and is hoping to make a full return during the Australia A tour of South Africa in July. If he makes it through those trips without any setbacks, he could press for selection for the ODIs in England that follow the Ashes. But it won’t be exactly the same Cummins who startled South Africa as a tearaway Test debutant. After a foot injury ruled him out of most of the 2011-12 summer and a back stress fracture left him a spectator in 2012-13, Cummins knew that his bowling action would need to be assessed. He is now at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane where he has been put through three sessions a week of bowling with a streamlined action that he, the bowling coach Troy Cooley, and Cricket Australia’s medical staff hope can keep him fit and firing.”It’s been trying to straighten everything out in my action,” Cummins told ESPNcricinfo. “Through a running coach I’ve been trying to fix my mechanics and be a more efficient runner in my approach to the crease, and then when I get to the crease trying to straighten out all the alignments. Hopefully it gets me a bit more swing and consistency.”It’s going against everything I’ve done for the last 20 years and trying to do something totally different. It’s certainly been a little bit foreign, but at the same time I want to nail it down because I know it’s going to turn me into a better bowler. It’s exciting but at the same time it’s challenging. You get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing improvements after every session.”It should mean I can bowl the same pace, if not quicker, but hopefully I’ll just be more efficient, which means I’ll be able to bowl more consistently and for longer in a game. Hopefully I can turn my swing into more consistent swing instead of having some days where it’s not swinging for me. It’s about having a less injury-prone action but also about enhancing the performances.”Not surprisingly, Cummins is itching to bowl with the red ball in a match situation again. That opportunity could come in England; although he won’t be part of the Australia A squad he might be used in their warm-up matches and he hopes there could be a chance to test himself in some league cricket during the trip. Of course, given his injury history, everything that Cummins or Cricket Australia says about his plans is prefaced with a “depending on…” or a “hopefully”.It had been hoped that he could return to the first-class scene at the start of the 2012-13 summer for New South Wales and that he would be in contention for the Tests against South Africa. He was building his workload back up during September and October as part of Australia’s squad for the limited-overs games against Pakistan in the UAE, the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka and for the Sydney Sixers in the Champions League, but a stress fracture in his back ended his season.”I really enjoy playing one-day and T20 cricket and I’d never want to give that away, but playing it for a couple of months made me realise how much I missed bowling with a red ball and building up a bowling innings,” Cummins said. “At the end of it I really just wanted to try to get back to that.”I think I played almost 20 Twenty20 games in a couple of months. I love playing it but I was really looking forward to playing Shield cricket after that. Unfortunately it didn’t happen. The long-term goal is definitely to get back into the red-ball game with Shield matches for New South Wales and down the track Tests is the goal.”First, he’ll have to keep himself fit enough to add to his 16 wickets from four first-class appearances. And having already experienced the thrill of Test cricket once in his short career, Cummins knows that sitting out of last season, even if his back soreness felt manageable, was the right decision in the long run.”It’s not acute pain but it’s just something that’s there,” he said. “The nature of a stress-fracture injury is that there’s a little crack and if you keep bowling it’s going to turn into a big crack. It’s one of those injuries that could turn into a massive injury if it’s not managed.”

BCCI treasurer considers resigning

BCCI treasurer Ajay Shirke is mulling resigning his post because of the manner in which the board handled the betting charges against the arrested Chennai Super Kings official, Gurunath Meiyappan

The outrage against the BCCI’s handling of the corruption issues in the IPL has not died down•Associated Press

BCCI treasurer Ajay Shirke is mulling resigning his post because of the manner in which the board handled the betting charges against the arrested Chennai Super Kings official, Gurunath Meiyappan, who is N Srinivasan’s son-in-law, and the spot-fixing charges against the three Rajasthan Royals players. Shirke has held his office since October 1, 2011, the day N Srinivasan became president.”I will wait and see for the time being. If the board continues to ignore what I consider is primary responsibility, I will find it difficult for myself to be associated with it,” Shirke told ESPNcricinfo. “It is an evolving situation, so I will wait and see.”A few days, maybe within a week, I will make up my mind. If there’s going to be more and more room for fingers to be pointed away, I will have to take a call. That doesn’t mean I will run away from fulfilling my responsibilities, but and I cannot let my personal reputation and credibility be tarnished. That for me stands above everything else.”While calls for Srinivasan’s resignation have been getting louder, he has repeatedly declined to resign. Though the BCCI constituted a three-member commission, which includes two former Tamil Nadu High Court judges, to probe the complaints against Meiyappan, the Super Kings owners India Cements and the Rajasthan Royals owners, Shirke highlighted the deficiency in the board’s handling of the matter.”I am not satisfied. Normally whenever there’s a crisis – small, major, any kind of crisis – we call for a (working committee) meeting,” Shirke said. “And we have had many such crises – of sponsors pulling out, or of an IPL franchise being disbanded. On every such occasion, the president calls for a meeting, and the issue is discussed in great detail by every member of the working committee. That has been the prevalent way.”Even when the players were arrested, there was an emergent meeting. Then we had a follow-up meeting in Chennai. Then the president came up to the media and explained all the measures that had been taken. After this, there hasn’t been anything on this (Gurunath arrest) issue. If the president calls for a meeting and puts his views across and hears out the other units – you don’t necessarily need to change your position – it would follow the proper procedure. Otherwise, the media trial will go on and on.”I have made my stance very clear on it. If I was Srinivasan and my son-in-law was arrested, I would have stepped aside till the internal probe was over.”Shirke said the BCCI reaction to Meiyappan’s arrest had been “more damaging” than the player arrests. “What has been happening is, people who have no knowledge about the functioning of the board have been referring to the board as a sham, a body of hoodlums and goons, which is very unfair. I don’t want to name anybody but if such people start talking about the way Indian cricket is administered, then people are bound to be misguided. We know how much of an effort we put into running the board.”I can vouch for myself and all my colleagues for making it one of the most credible and most professionally-run sporting bodies in the country by a distance. We don’t get government grants, we pay huge taxes to the government, we generate foreign exchange of around Rs 350 crore every year and we have not just created top-quality infrastructure all over the country but have also maintained all those assets in top conditions.”To top it all, the sport that we represent is the only sport where India is consistently among top teams in the world. On such a backdrop, how can you make a general statement like BCCI is nothing but a sham and refer to every member as a hoodlum? If you have a comparative analysis of BCCI and any other top sports federation in India in terms of audited accounts, quality and method of financial statements, number of elected members running the sport by one of the top private auditing firms, you will realise what all good has the BCCI been doing.”That doesn’t mean there are no issues and problems and complexities to be addressed. There are plenty of ways wherein we can improve going into the future and we are striving for that. But anyone coming on camera and slamming the board is very unfair.”The spot-fixing scandal came to light when Delhi Police arrested three Rajasthan Royals cricketers within hours after the Royals’ match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on May 15. Several bookies and an actor were arrested after that, and Meiyappan was arrested by Mumbai Police on May 24.

Australia revival 'will take time' – Howard

In a frank discussion of what appears a dire medium-term forecast for the national team, Pat Howard defended his decision to sack the former coach, Mickey Arthur

Australian cricket faces years of difficult times ahead until the nation’s domestic competitions can again be relied upon to provide effective preparation for young batsmen and spin bowlers. This grim view was not shied away from by Cricket Australia’s team performance manager, Pat Howard, as he sifted through the wreckage of the 347-run defeat at Lord’s, which has left many wondering how such a result could be possible two years after the Argus review highlighted many of the problems on display. In a frank discussion of what appears a dire medium-term forecast for the national team, Howard defended his decision to sack the former coach, Mickey Arthur, and replace him with Darren Lehmann a mere two weeks before the start of the Investec Ashes series. He also agreed with an emotional James Pattinson’s assessment that the lack of rest afforded the bowlers by an inept first-innings batting display at Lord’s had contributed to his back stress fracture. But the major conclusion Howard was prepared to draw from Lord’s was that problems in the Australian game will take years to remedy, requiring even stronger alignment between the states and CA to strengthen the club and Sheffield Shield competitions that have been left in disrepair while Twenty20 dollars have been chased with far more vigour than adequate grounding for Test match cricketers.”When Australia and Australia A play over the same weekend and the highest scores were Glenn Maxwell and Moises Henriques getting 60s and 70s [in Zimbabwe], our ability to bat a long time needs to improve,” Howard said. “We need to work with the states to enforce that message around batting for a long time and batting with patience. Making sure Sheffield Shield cricket goes into the fourth day so we start getting footmarks, we start getting spinners bowling more in the Shield so they get used to that as well.”There’s a big process there to get right, and it’s going to take time. I definitely need to work with the states to get this to a point where the Shield prepares players for Tests even better. We would love lots more people scoring big hundreds at home. Only two people got three hundreds in Shield cricket last year, Ricky Ponting and Chris Rogers. One of them is here and one you know plenty about, so the system has got to help provide that.”A minor victory for CA’s high-performance regime in their battle with the marketing and programming side of the governing body’s Melbourne office is a change to the 2013-14 summer, which will see the domestic limited-overs competition played as a whole early in the season, before a run of six consecutive Shield matches leading up to the final two Tests of the summer. The Big Bash League then takes hold until mid-February.”I am happy about the fact it is not going Shield, one-dayer, Shield, one-dayer – there are six games of red-ball cricket in a row at the start of the season,” Howard said. “No interruptions, no trying to hit it over the top, people are going to have to be patient and spinners will get some time to get wickets. I am hoping we will reinforce over that period the discipline of red-ball cricket. It’s an opportunity for the coaches to drill in those messages.”On the matter of Arthur, Howard said he did not retreat for one moment from the call to install Lehmann, on a basis the South African has described as “totally unfair”.”When you sit there and look and have conversations, and there were plenty of articles written about what was right and what was wrong, you knew there was something that needed to be dealt with,” Howard said. “It was dealt with and you make decisions not just for one week or two weeks but you make them for a period and who’s going to best galvanise the side. I don’t want to go into that particularly, but who was going to get the best out of this group, that was a simple decision.”Obviously there is a legal issue going. I can’t comment on that. But it’s never nice when you get moved on. It’s happened to lots of people. It’s never nice. On the ground it’s not affecting the players. They’ve moved on, gone on and feel galvanised with this group. Even though there are two Tests we lost, was one close, the other we didn’t play well enough, clearly … I don’t move away. It was the right decision.”

Broad leads charge to Ashes victory

Stuart Broad ripped through Australia with six wickets as they slumped from 120 for 1 at tea to lose by 74 runs and give England the series

The Report by Daniel Brettig12-Aug-2013

To Headingley and Edgbaston 1981 may be added Durham 2013. As happened 32 years ago, Australia tossed away day upon day of diligent cricket with a crowded hour or so of batting calamity, against bowling of high quality from an England team that had looked momentarily bereft of inspiration.Where in 1981 Bob Willis and Ian Botham had rained blows on their antipodean rivals, this time it was Stuart Broad, aided by a critical cameo from Tim Bresnan. Back then, England had been marshalled expertly by Mike Brearley; now it was Alastair Cook who pulled the right rein by replacing Graeme Swann with Bresnan when Australia were 167 for 2 and hurtling towards 299 to win. What followed was a cavalcade of wickets that undid nine days’ worth of hard graft from an Australia team straining to break a sequence of ineptitude. England would have hoped to stay in the match with four wickets after tea – they won it by claiming nine, six to a fearsome Broad. Slightly sheepish in their Ashes retention in Manchester, the hosts could now celebrate winning them in dramatic and damaging style. For all their efforts at Old Trafford and Chester-le-Street the tourists are 3-0 down, confidence battered by the realisation of futility. Australia’s belief that they can win Test matches will be extremely shaken. England’s sense that they can defeat Australia come what may can never be stronger than it is now. Chris Rogers, Brad Haddin and Ryan Harris, all heroic at times in this match, will ponder whether the twilight of their careers will be lived without Ashes hope. Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja now bear the scars that once dogged England’s 1990s generation.Broad’s impact on the match was profound, as a tally of 11 wickets attests. His away cutter to defeat Michael Clarke was among the balls of the series. But it was Bresnan’s introduction that swung the contest, reaping the dismissal of a fluent and focused David Warner. With Rogers he had blunted England’s bowlers in a stirring century stand and, though Swann had beaten Rogers with spin and Khawaja without it, Warner and Clarke were scoring freely.Warner has seldom played better in Tests, repeatedly piercing the off-side field with back-foot punches, then advancing to loft Swann over wide long off for six. But as a modicum of cloud cover passed over Durham, Bresnan extracted bounce and movement from a perfect length to tickle Warner’s outside edge and pull England back from the precipice.Andy Flower’s messages from the boundary had circulated freely as Australia swept closer to their target, and a drinks break brought about the plan that would do in Clarke. England set a field that foreshadowed a short ball, and Clarke could not help but notice. Instead he received a delivery that was full, fast and seaming away. The off stump tilted back as Joe Root’s had on day three, and Broad roared his approval.Smith has had a poor match, out cheaply on day two then dropping a catch on the fourth morning. He eluded one caught-behind appeal when the ball struck his hip rather than his bat, but when essaying the shot again could manage only to drag it off his body and on to the stumps.Shane Watson’s front pad again got in the way, plonked across the stumps to Bresnan. Leg stump was visible when he was struck in line, and though the angle was sharp, Aleem Dar’s finger was raised. Watson’s review showed the ball clipping the stumps, enough to keep him walking.Broad’s pace was pushing the Australians back in their crease, a dangerous position from which to play the seaming ball. Haddin would fall in this manner, struck in line and with feet in the air. As the only batsman left he had to review Tony Hill’s decision, and like Watson would depart to a ball barely clipping the stumps. England celebrated like winners. From there, all that remained was to mop up Australia’s longest tail of the series. Harris ended a match he should be proud of by being pinned lbw, Nathan Lyon was far too late and crooked on a Broad delivery that made a mess of his stumps. In fading light, Cook claimed the extra half hour to clinch the match, and a final burst of sun allowed him to call on Broad again. Three balls later Peter Siddle lamely poked a catch to mid-off, a fitting end for Broad but also Australia. To his evening contribution, Bresnan had added a critical morning prelude. In Harris’ hands the new ball immediately started to dance on a pitch showing increasing signs of wear. Bresnan shouldered arms to one ball from Jackson Bird that seamed back and would have clipped the top of the stumps, but that was not enough to overturn Dar’s not-out verdict – Australia lost their final review. The first ball of Harris’ second over was fast, skidding and low of bounce, crashing into Bell’s stumps after 254 minutes’ batting of the highest class. Matt Prior marched out for precisely one delivery, which kicked up off a similar length to the previous one and crashed into off stump via the batsman’s arm. Broad averted the hat-trick, but was soon pinned on the gloves by a vicious bouncer from around the wicket.Harris now had six wickets and England a lead of 243. Knowing this was not enough, Bresnan moved up a gear, clouting Bird out of the attack with a series of muscular blows, then put a dent in the figures of Harris. Swann followed up by gliding Siddle’s first ball of the morning to the cover fence. Australian shoulders began to slump.Clarke replaced Siddle with Lyon, and his maiden calmed the innings. Harris then bowled similarly tightly to Bresnan and was rewarded with a return catch and his best figures in Tests. Swann’s response to the fall of the ninth wicket was to try to hit Lyon into the stands, and he offered a high, swirling chance to Smith. He was under the ball in plenty of time but did not get entirely balanced, and the ball bounced out of tense hands.Swann took England’s lead near enough to 300 before Lyon found Anderson’s outside edge. They had more than doubled the runs Australia’s tail managed to cobble on the previous morning, a difference that would prove almost as decisive as the bowling of Broad and Bresnan. Though they have dodged punches for the most part of two matches, England are deserving Ashes winners. Australia, as they did 32 years ago, have become awfully accomplished at finding ways to lose.

– Falta paciência no futebol brasileiro. Não é assim. Não é todo jogador que vai chegar e fazer chover da noite para o dia, como o Ricardo Goulart. Sabemos a qualidade do Carlos Eduardo.
