Chris Cairns, the former New Zealand allrounder, has strenuously denied allegations in London’s High Court that he was involved in match-fixing during the now defunct Indian Cricket League. His statement came at the start of his libel case against Lalit Modi, the former Indian Premier League commissioner, over a 2010 tweet that referred to Cairns’ alleged involvement in corruption.Cairns issued the writ in London’s High Court in January 2010, shortly after Modi’s claims were made public. On January 5, 2010, Modi tweeted that Cairns had been removed from the forthcoming IPL auction list because of his involvement with match-fixing. Cairns denied this but Modi responded by saying: “Let him sue us, then we will produce what we have in court.”Cairns was captain of Chandigarh Lions in the Twenty20 league but had his contract terminated in October 2008, during the third edition of the tournament. The official reason given was that Cairns had failed to disclose an ankle injury in breach of his contract. However, Ronald Thwaites QC, representing Modi, suggested that this was a “cover-up” designed to allow both Cairns and the ICL to save face after an investigation into fixing within the tournament. “You tried to leave with your tail between your legs in the hope that match-fixing would not leak out as the real reason for your dismissal,” he said.Cairns, on the witness stand, repeatedly rejected the claim that he was sacked because of his involvement in fixing.”Firstly, I never cheated,” Cairns said. “Secondly, you offend me with what you’re saying.”Questioned about the meeting on October 26, 2008 that led to his dismissal, Cairns admitted that rumours about match-fixing concerning him and “other internationals” playing in the ICL had been brought up. However, he denied that this was the real reason for his contract being terminated, repeating the statement that he had never cheated.Thwaites also asked Cairns about his financial situation in 2008, in particular his work for an Indian diamond trading company called Vijay Dimon. Cairns had no contract, only a verbal agreement, to do promotional and sales work, and accepted that he had no previous experience in the diamond industry. He confirmed he received around 900,000 Emirati Dirham ($245,000) in three separate payments over the course of 2008 and 2009.Earlier, Andrew Caldecott QC, representing Cairns, had set out the reasons for pursuing the case against Modi before the judge, David Bean. He said that the aim was to protect Cairns’ reputation, as well as to procure damages, and that the allegation was “wholly untrue”.Caldecott said: “It must have been blindingly obvious to anyone involved in sport that the tweet made an allegation of the utmost gravity – and one which should never have been publicly made without careful enquiry.”Modi’s tweet was picked up by ESPNcricinfo but the story was later removed and damages were paid to Cairns after he made an official complaint.”An allegation of cheating is one of the most, if not the most, serious and damaging of all allegations that could possibly be levelled against a professional sportsman,” Cairns said in evidence. “Uncorrected it will destroy what I have achieved over a successful twenty-year sporting career.”The defendant’s allegations have also had a profound effect on my personal and private life. It put a strain on my marriage. It hurts that my wife may think that I am not the man she thought I was. It hurts me too that friends, many of whom are former cricketing foes, will question my integrity as a man and a sportsman and that all I achieved in the great game of cricket is dust.”In evidence put before the court, several Indian players were named as witnesses due to testify against Cairns. His six accusers are former Chandigarh team-mates: Rajesh Sharma, TP Singh, Love Ablish, Gaurav Gupta, Amit Uniyal and Karanveer Singh. Former South Africa allrounder Andrew Hall, who also played alongside Cairns, is due to be called as a witness for Modi as well.Cairns captained Chandigarh during all three editions of the tournament. His contract was terminated early in the third edition, which ran from October to November 2008, according to Cairns because he had hidden an ankle injury from the league. He claimed the ankle problem, which had meant he played as a specialist batsman for Nottinghamshire in the English Twenty20 Cup during June 2008, was made worse by his participation in a 1000km charity walk for the Chris Cairns foundation. The charity was set up after the death of Cairns’ sister Louise in a rail accident in 1993 and campaigns to increase rail safety awareness. However, Thwaites said that it was “perfectly ludicrous” to suggest that officials at the ICL were unaware of Cairns’ condition. “Everyone knew you had an ankle injury,” he said.Comments on this story have been closed

Ele, porém, chegou a defender a Seleção sub-17.

Centurion Rahane stars in big win for Royals

Ajinkya Rahane’s blistering century brought up the first century of IPL 2012, and delivered a big win for Rajasthan Royals

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran15-Apr-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAjinkya Rahane bettered his previous-best of 98 against Kings XI Punjab•AFP

The game was effectively over when the players walked off for the innings break. Ajinkya Rahane’s blistering, unbeaten 103 brought up the first century of IPL 2012, propelling Rajasthan Royals to 195 against an already battered Royal Challengers Bangalore. Assisted by Owais Shah’s equally intimidating 60, the Royals piled on a score way beyond reach for the hosts and such was the dominance that the chase turned out to be a tepid affair.Rahane also smashed six consecutive fours off an over – the first in Twenty20 history, S Aravind being the unfortunate bowler. Rahane and Shah – ten years apart – didn’t just deliver for the team’s cause but also nudged their respective national team selectors ahead of the World Twenty20, each getting two big scores so far this IPL. Their bowlers – led by Siddharth Trivedi – backed them up, hitting their targets like efficient salesmen, getting six batsmen bowled.Ironically, the losing side had the bigger names. With the likes of Daniel Vettori, Muttiah Muralitharan and Zaheer Khan to contend with, it appeared as if the Royals worked to the plan of exploiting the less-experienced Indian bowlers. It was an extension of Royal Challengers’ affliction from the match against Chennai Super Kings, when Virat Kohli leaked 28 off the penultimate over of the game.At one stage, Aravind conceded 48 off three overs, almost the same number given away by Zaheer, Vettori and Murali off ten combined overs. A less-than-fit Chris Gayle, recovering from a groin injury, came on in the 16th over more as an act of desperation by Vettori and didn’t fare any better than the other weak links, leaking 21.The hammering Rahane dished out was reminiscent of Brendon McCullum’s butchering at the same venue in the IPL’s opening game in 2008. He began by splitting the gap past cover and backward point for two fours off Aravind in the second over. The onslaught that followed was so brutal that it’s easy to forget Zaheer bowled a maiden over to Rahane, the third of the innings. Rahane showed no such respect for Aravind the following over, taking 15 off it, including a massive hit over long-on.Vettori and Murali then pulled things back with five relatively quiet overs, going for 23. Vettori’s spell only widened the gap between him and the rest. He varied his pace and flight, fired in the quicker ones to keep the batsmen guessing.Rahane’s merciless approach was best illustrated in the 14th over, which produced six fours. He drove Aravind forcefully down the ground off the first two balls, scooped the third to fine leg, pulled the fourth to midwicket, drove the fifth past cover and delicately dabbed the six to third man. Aravind varied his pace and length, AB de Villiers came up to the stumps but nothing deterred Rahane.Shah began his party with a top-edged six over long leg, before ripping into Gayle. Vinay Kumar aimed for the blockhole, but somehow Shah found a way to get under the bounce and slam sixes down the ground. He brought up his fifty off just 19 balls before launching into Murali. He tried the same against a slower Zaheer delivery but was caught at long-on.At the other end, Rahane started the final over needing seven for his century and he required just three balls to get there. After driving Vinay past mid-off, he flat-batted the third ball just past long-on’s grasp to bring up the landmark. The Royals hammered 113 off the last seven overs, the third-best in IPL history.Royal Challengers began the chase in enterprising manner, with Mayank Agarwal pulling the first ball for six over fine leg. But a double-strike by Pankaj Singh in the fifth over derailed the chase and took the fight out of the hosts. Agarwal was caught off a top-edge and two balls later, Gayle dragged one onto his stumps. That followed a period of prolonged struggle for Royal Challengers, stumbling against the asking rate, compounded by the steady fall of wickets. The boundary drought lasted an unforgivable 37 deliveries and that was thanks largely to Trivedi’s nagging line and slower deliveries bowled from back of a length, assisted by the slow pitch. De Villiers played on to one that kept low, Kohli and Saurabh perished swinging across the line, before Vettori lost his leg stump giving the bowler the charge. Trivedi’s 4 for 23 was his personal best in the IPL and the combined efforts launched the Royals to the top of the table.

Taylor hundred helps edge tourists towards defeat

England Lions moved into a 104-run lead against the West Indians in Northampton after the visitors had fought back during the morning sessions

The news coming from Chelmsford of concerns surrounding Ravi Bopara’s fitness added extra interest to events on the second day in Northampton, where James Taylor, the England Lions captain, went about reaffirming his international credentials with a superb century while Jonny Bairstow produce another eye-catching innings. The West Indians were left facing a tough challenge to avoid defeat ahead of the Test series as they closed in trouble on 28 for 3, still 166 behind.Bopara is widely expected to be given the No. 6 spot for the start of the international season, having carried the drinks during the two winter Test series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This latest injury worry appears to be at the minor end of the scale but even if it precluded him from bowling for a period that should not dent his Test chances, unlike they did in Sri Lanka when a side strain cost him a likely opportunity. On that occasion England felt they needed a reasonable fifth bowler, whereas in England during May the four frontliners will be more than enough. However, if batting cover (or ultimately a replacement) was required it would come from this Lions side so it was a timely moment to impress, although it is Bairstow who is probably ahead of Taylor at the current time, despite the latter’s hundred. Taylor has slipped down the pecking order over the last six months, to the extent that he was not included in the 26-man England Performance Squad for the season ahead, which is a rough guide of the way the selectors are thinking. He had a disappointing winter with the Lions during the one-day tours of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, so this was an important innings to put him back on the agenda.Last season he impressed in Lions colours with 76 against the Sri Lankans at Derby, where he opened the batting, followed by 76 and 98 against Sri Lanka A back in the middle order. Before this match Taylor said he saw himself as a middle-order player – although, as players do, he added he would bat anywhere – and it does appear his natural home. Here he was at No. 5, the same position he currently occupies for Nottinghamshire, with Samit Patel, who did not do himself any favours with a lazy chip back to the bowler, above him; although anyone with aspirations to bat top six for England should ideally bat top four for their county. This innings was exemplary and the only life he got was on 104 when he was caught at slip off a no-ball from Fidel Edwards. He had initially played second fiddle to Bairstow, but caught up as he moved to fifty off 91 balls and became increasingly dominant as he started to lose partners. The pull shot was working well and the West Indian bowlers did not always adjust their length and he was lightning between the wickets which helped with the outfield remaining sluggish. When Jack Brooks was ninth out Taylor was on 86 but Jade Dernbach, who took a painful blow on the arm from Edwards which prevented him from taking the field, hung around to see his partner towards three figures, which arrived with a thumping cover drive. The confrontation between Dernbach and Edwards was feisty and included a few words from the fielders which led to the umpires stepping in to calm the situation. The final-wicket stand was extended to a 64 in 10 overs as Dernbach and Taylor opened their shoulders and the final three wickets added 130 to take the Lions lead from useful to intimidating.During the morning session a lead of such a size was a long way off as the Lions slipped to 98 for 5, which brought Bairstow to the crease to join his captain. Entering the game in good form, having made two Championship centuries for Yorkshire this season, he stood tall and played impressively through the off side off front and back foot. His fifty came from 89 balls before, against the run of the play, he lofted Shane Shillingford to mid-off just as the tourists were starting to flag. The only member of this Lions team certain to be in the first Test squad is Ian Bell, who asked to play in this match after Ben Stokes withdrew with injury and he played confidently for his 29. At one stage when facing Shillingford he had to pull out of his stance as Andy Flower, the England team director, who is at the ground with the other selectors to discuss the squad for the first Test walked behind the bowler’s arm. Flower immediately raised his arms in apology and Bell had a smirk on his face but that turned to a grimace when Ravi Rampaul, the pick of the West Indian quicks, nipped one between bat and pad.The tourists will need to decide which of this four-man attack makes way for Darren Sammy at Lord’s. Edwards had moments when he cranked up the pace but continued to have no-ball problems and spells of lethargy, while Kemar Roach left the field after claiming his third wicket, although if all the quicks are fit it could be Shillingford who misses out. They may not get the chance of another run-out before the Test as the top order stumbled again before the close, as Brooks and Matt Coles shared three wickets, and the visitors will have to make huge improvements to be competitive next week.

O LANCE! destrincha as manifestações abaixo.

Allenby blows leave Warks washed up

Two crucial sixes from Glamorgan captain Jim Allenby sealed his side’s victory in their rain-affected Friends Life t20 clash against Warwickshire

17-Jun-2012
ScorecardTwo crucial sixes from Glamorgan captain Jim Allenby sealed his side’s victory in their rain-affected Friends Life t20 clash against Warwickshire. The Welsh Dragons, who now have three points in the group along with leaders Somerset and Worcestershire, won by five runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method. After winning the toss the Bears reached 141 for 5 in a match reduced to 18 overs because of the weather. In reply Glamorgan, watched by a crowd of 6,000, needed 146 to win by D/L.After a pedestrian start on a slow pitch and the loss of Marcus North, Glamorgan accelerated through Allenby who hit two big sixes off Jeetan Patel and Paul Best. And when the umpires took the players from the field for the final time Glamorgan had got ahead of the D/L rate of 57 to reach a match-winning position of 62 for 1, with Shaun Marsh on 35 from 25 balls and Allenby 24 from 15.At the start, Warwickshire were pegged back early on, with Simon Jones breaking through twice in the space of four balls in his first over. The former England seamer had Laurie Evans caught at short fine leg before Will Porterfield went to a fine catch by Stewart Walters running away at point. That left the Bears on 13 for 2 but stand-in captain Varun Chopra and Darren Maddy turned the initiative back to the visitors, putting on 77 from 61 balls. Chopra gave the innings some impetus taking 11 off an over from Jones including a six over long-on.The rain had threatened when the umpires took the players from the pitch with the Bears 38 for 2 off five overs. The second rain break reduced the match to an 18-over contest but when they came back they lost three more wickets with Maddy (49), Rikki Clarke and Chopra (53) all going in the space of 19 balls.Dean Cosker finished with 2 for 23 from his four overs including the sharp run-out of Maddy.
