Smith fifty leads South Africa rout

Graeme Smith’s rapid half-century helped South Africa make light work of the 169 they had been set by a promising batting performance from Zimbabwe at Bloemfontein

Graeme Smith’s rapid half-century helped South Africa make light work of the 169 they had been set by a promising batting performance from Zimbabwe at Bloemfontein.Smith butchered 58 from 29 balls and received able support from Loots Bosman, JP Duminy and David Miller as South Africa rushed to an easy victory. He stepped down as South Africa’s Twenty20 captain to give himself a breather in the hectic international schedule but he came to the fore to spare his successor, Johan Botha, any embarrassment after a shoddy fielding display from South Africa gave Zimbabwe hope at the half-way stage. While Zimbabwe’s batsmen, led by fifties from Hamilton Masakadza and Chamu Chibhabha, may have shown the optimism surrounding the side is not entirely misplaced, the bowlers – shorn of the services of fiery left-arm spinner Ray Price – were not up to international standard.Though Bosman was under some pressure after making 8, 0, 7, and 0 in his last four innings he responded by smiting 33 in 16 deliveries to leave Zimbabwe’s new-ball bowlers reeling. Any time he found the ball in his half he cleanly dispatched it, with a pair of sixes off Ed Rainsford ending up in the stands over cover.Smith, meanwhile, had been almost anonymous in the field, but was back into the thick of the action with the bat. He punished the gentle new-ball offerings with his customary clubbing into the leg side and greeted the part-time medium pace of Masakadza with utter disdain on his way to a 26-ball fifty.By the time he was out, missing a sweep off Graeme Cremer to be trapped on the back pad, South Africa were coasting at 95 for 2 off 7.3 overs but they were given a slight scare as debutant Colin Ingram fell soon after.David Miller and JP Duminy ensured no slip ups though, as they followed in Smith’s aggressive vein. The 21-year-old Miller impressed on his Twenty20 debut against West Indies earlier this year and he again showcased his ability to see his side home. One over from Cremer was taken for 18 as he used his quick feet and power to punish the legspinner. Duminy finished the job in style, smashing a four and a six off the hapless Prosper Utseya as South Africa cantered to victory with 25 balls to spare. The rout masked a lethargic fielding effort from South Africa. Catches were put down and the ground fielding was clumsy as they responded poorly to the pressure placed on them from Zimbabwe’s lively line-up. Coming into the game all the talk was of the return of 39-year-old Grant Flower after a six-year hiatus but it was Zimbabwe’s young batsmen who impressed as Flower was left marooned at home, unable to leave the country due to a problem with his visa.Flower, who is also the team’s batting coach, would have been impressed with what he saw as Chibhabha broke the record for the quickest Twenty20 international fifty by a Zimbabwean, reaching the landmark off 29 balls, while Masakadza anchored the innings before finishing with a flourish to end on 72 off 63 balls. After a slow start in which South Africa’s new-ball bowlers impressed, Zimbabwe used the injury to Morne Morkel, who limped off the field after twisting his ankle, to their advantage and added 102 in the final ten overs. Though it looked like carrying the tourists to a good total, Smith’s onslaught ensured it wasn’t nearly enough.

Everton had a howler with Schneiderlin

While Morgan Schneiderlin may not have been the only transfer mistake made under the Farhad Moshiri regime at Everton, he certainly proved one of the most expensive, having failed to live up to his initial hefty price tag.

The Frenchman had originally made his name as part of the hugely talented Southampton side which stormed back into the Premier League in 2012 under Nigel Adkins, alongside the likes of Adam Lallana and Jose Fonte, having helped the Saints to navigate their way out of the third tier after joining in 2008.

His displays on the south coast alerted the attention of Manchester United, with Louis Van Gaal opting to fork out £25m for the defensive midfielder in 2015, only for the player to be moved on just 18 months later following Jose Mourinho’s appointment.

Despite failing to convince at Old Trafford, the Toffees and Ronald Koeman – in their infinite wisdom – decided that Schneiderlin was worth a punt, as they coughed up a fairly sizeable £24m to bring him Goodison Park in January 2017.

Schneiderlin’s Everton woes

In truth, those among the United hierarchy would have been rubbing their hands in glee at having been able to recoup almost their entire initial transfer fee on a player who had failed to nail down a regular starting berth and who, according to club legend Rio Ferdinand, posed “zero threat” in the middle of the park.

Nevertheless, the Goodison Park outfit went ahead with the deal, although they would eventually wish they hadn’t as the Frenchman went on to score just one goal in 88 appearances in all competitions over the next three years.

In fact, he had as many goal contributions in total as he did red cards (three), notably getting sent off in a Europa League defeat to Lyon in November 2017, with the dismissal leaving pundit Chris Sutton to suggest that the player “didn’t look like he wanted to be there”.

As it proved, Schneiderlin might as well not have been on Merseyside over the next few years, as he made next to no impact in blue, while he was infamously booed by his own supporters while entering the fray as a substitute in February 2018, just a year into his time at the club.

Having failed to ever win over the crowd or the string of managers who came and went at Everton, he was eventually shipped off to Nice in January 2021 for a fraction of his initial cost, with the Premier League outfit having been forced to accept that he was simply a lost cause.

Since then, the 32-year-old has made 56 appearances for his current club in all competitions, although he is still yet to find the net, while his market value has now dropped to a mere £3.6m – a reflection of his stark decline over the last five years or so.

Peter Chingoka, Zimbabwe Cricket’s long-standing and controversial chairman, has been appointed by the ICC as one of its Pakistan Task Team, originally constituted to assist with the country’s return to staging home Tests and now expanded to “help the Pakistan Cricket Board to carry out any reforms which may be deemed necessary to restore confidence in the administration of the game in Pakistan”.His appointment at a time his own position at the helm of Cricket Zimbabwe is under increasing pressure comes despite his own board having been the subject of a major ICC investigation a few years ago. In 2008 an independent audit commissioned by the ICC highlighted “serious financial irregularities” within the board of which Chingoka was head. While Zimbabwe are taking major strides on their own rehabilitation into the international community, much of the credit for that is given to Ozias Bvute, official the board’s chief executive but increasingly the face of the board.”He is not exactly a shining example of how to run an administration,” said one former colleague and Zimbabwe board member. “Given all that’s happened on his watch it would be hard to find someone less likely to advise another board on how best to run their affairs.”Chingoka remains banned from entering the European Community because of what the authorities claim to be his links to the Mugabe regime, and he was recently identified by the new British government as being the major obstacle to a return of cricketing relations with Zimbabwe.

Ele refletiu bem o caráter determinado do time.

Celtic send scouts to watch Mohanad Jeahze

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou overlooked a significant transfer overhaul at the Parkhead club during the previous summer transfer window.

Not only did the Hoops see a raft of new faces make their way to Celtic Park either on permanent or loan deals, but the club also cashed in on a number of players that made moves elsewhere.

Now that the Bhoys are on the verge of securing the SPFL title, it seems as though things have been going on behind the scenes at Lennoxtown in regards to one potential transfer deal that could take place during the next summer window.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Daily Record, Celtic sent scouts to watch Hammarby full-back Mohanad Jeahze in action against Malmo on Monday as their interest in the defender intensifies.

The Hoops have been linked with a move for the left-back in recent weeks and now seem to very much have him on their radar in terms of a potential summer transfer move.

Since joining the Swedish club back in the 2020 summer transfer window, the Iraq international has gone on to make 56 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing 12 assists in the process.

Celtic fans will be buzzing

In terms of what the Celtic scouts saw from the defender in Monday’s 0-0 draw against Malmo, Jeahze ended up making two tackles, one interception and won three of the four duels he was involved in.

Not only did he show what a capable defensive figure he is, but he also made one key pass for his side and earned himself a solid overall match rating of 7.1/10 from SofaScore.

Looking at the season as a whole, the 25-year-old has the second-highest number of tackles (9) and crosses (25) for his side as well as the highest number of interceptions (14).

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to suggest that a lot of Celtic fans will be delighted to hear that their club have sent scouts to watch Jeahze. Not only will the scouts have been left impressed with his display but it’s likely his all-action approach would be appreciated by supporters too.

If the club end up bringing the player to Celtic Park in the summer, this could kickstart yet another significant period of transfer business as Postecoglou will want his side to be as successful as possible moving forward.
