Celtic: Juranovic attracting interest

Celtic right-back Josip Juranovic is attracting significant interest ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Fabrizio Romano, who revealed on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast that Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City, as well as a host of other clubs, are keeping a very close eye on the 26-year-old ahead of a potential move for the defender at the end of the current campaign.

The transfer insider went on to state that Celtic would demand a fee of between €10m-€15m (£8.5m-£12.5m) in order to part with the Croatia international this summer.

Speaking about the interest in Juranovic, Romano said: “Juranovic is a very interesting name to keep an eye on. Leicester, but not only Leicester [are interested]. This is the right-back playing for Celtic. His price will be around €10m-€15m.

“But this boy is doing great with Celtic. He’s performing at the top level. I have a feeling that in the summer he will have a chance to move. I’m told many clubs are exploring this opportunity.”

Disaster

Considering just how impressive Juranovic has been for Celtic since his £2.5m move to Parkhead last summer, should the Bhoys indeed go on to lose the right-back after just one season in Glasgow, especially for a fee as little as £8.5m, it would undoubtedly be a disaster for Ange Postecoglou and his side.

Indeed, over his 20 Premiership appearances in the current campaign, the £3.6m-rated defender has been in remarkable form for the Hoops, helping his side keep eight clean sheets, scoring two goals and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.4 key passes, one interception, 1.6 tackles, 1.5 clearances and winning 3.1 duels – at a success rate of 60% – per game.

These returns have seen the 26-year-old who Ally McCoist dubbed “outstanding” average a quite astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.25, ranking the £16k-per-week full-back as the 12th-best player in the entirety of the Scottish top flight.

As such, it is clear for all to see that losing the services of Juranovic so soon into his Celtic career would come as a major blow to the 56-year-old Bhoys boss, especially if the club were to only receive an £8.5m fee for the Croatian dynamo.

Fraser Forster could stay at Southampton

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster could stay put at the club beyond the summer transfer window, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

The Lowdown: Forster impressing this season

After struggling for minutes earlier in the season, the 33-year-old has impressed of late, starting six matches since the turn of the year.

Forster performed well in the hard-earned 1-1 draw at home to champions Manchester City, earning a 7.29 rating from WhoScored, and kept a clean sheet against Everton last weekend.

However, the Englishman’s current Saints deal expires at the end of this season, at which point a vital decision needs to be made regarding his future.

The Latest: Forster could stay at Southampton

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Barclay claimed that Southampton are considering extending Forster’s stay at St Mary’s.

The journalist revealed: “I wouldn’t be shocked now if he can sustain it, if there was a conversation. I’m told that could happen if he continues putting in his performances. He would have to take a wage drop, I’m not sure what he’s on, but I’m pretty sure it’s high.”

The Verdict: Worth a short-term extension?

Assuming Forster is happy to take a reduction on his £72,000-a-week salary (the joint-third highest at St Mary’s) and continue to battle for playing time, retaining his services for another season or two feels like a no-brainer for Southampton.

He boasts plenty of experience in the Premier League with 123 appearances in the division, not to mention winning six caps for England, and at 33 he is still far from old as far as goalkeepers are concerned.

If all parties can come to an agreement to keep him at the club, it would be a positive piece of business by Saints to keep hold of a proven top-level performer who has been shown plenty of trust by Ralph Hasenhuttl of late.

Maynard guides Glamorgan win

Tom Maynard hit a magnificent 78 not out from just 43 balls against Surrey at the Brit Oval to keep Glamorgan’s hopes of a Friends Provident t20 quarter-final alive. Maynard struck five sixes and five fours to lift Glamorgan from a wobbly 46 for 3 to victory by five wickets with three balls to spare in an entertaining South Group match.Surrey began the day as one of four counties in second place on 12 points behind group leaders Sussex, but their hopes of a seventh win from their 12th game disappeared as fast as the strokes that flew from 21-year-old Maynard’s bat.Glamorgan now have five wins from their own 12 group games to date, and the identity of the three counties who will qualify for the knock-out phase behind Sussex looks like remaining in doubt right up to the last round of matches. At 70 for 3 at the 10-over mark, it seemed as if Glamorgan were struggling to keep pace with the task of scoring 169, but Maynard was just warming up and in the 14th over he began to hit the accelerator with a brilliant pick-up for six over deep square leg off Stuart Meaker which took the total past 100 and then a pull for four from the next ball.Jamie Dalrymple, the Glamorgan captain, played his part with four successive fours off Rory Hamilton-Brown’s 15th over and although Chris Tremlett returned to york Dalrymple for 28 two overs later, the force was by now with Maynard. The son of Glamorgan cricket director Matthew Maynard took two crucial boundaries off Tremlett later in the same over and perhaps the moment which finally decided the outcome came in the 18th over when Stewart Walters brought off a superb diving catch at deep square leg, as Maynard swung away a ball from Chris Schofield, but could not prevent his momentum from carrying him over the boundary rope.It was Maynard’s fourth six and the fifth arrived in the final over. Glamorgan began it needing 10 but Hamilton-Brown fired a wide down the legside with his first ball, also enabling Ben Wright to scamper a bye, and Maynard then hit the next ball – a full toss – high over mid-wicket. Two balls later, with the scores level, Wright hit the cover-driven four which confirmed Glamorgan’s win.Mark Ramprakash had provided the anchor innings in Surrey’s 168 for 4, finishing on 63 not out from 49 balls. He set off like a train, hitting Will Owen for a six and four from successive balls in the third over after starting with two boundaries in Robert Croft’s opening over.He and Tommy Lancefield added 68 in less than six overs for the first wicket, and Ramprakash later swung Jim Allenby high over wide long-on for another six, but otherwise the former England batsman concentrated on rotating the strike as a succession of partners attempted big hits at the other end.Left-hander Lancefield hit two sixes in a quickfire 27 and Walters provided the necessary end-of-innings impetus with a six and three fours in a 19-ball 31 not out but, although Jason Roy and Hamilton-Brown also both managed sixes, there were no fireworks from Andrew Symonds, who holed out to long-off with a poor shot after scoring just four.Glamorgan, who began well in this year’s Twenty20 Cup, have fallen away badly since having fast bowler Shaun Tait called up by Australia, and again missed his extra pace as their seamers were treated harshly by the Surrey batsmen. But spinners Croft, Dean Cosker and Jamie Dalrymple all bowled creditably and maintained enough control to give the Welsh county hope of victory themselves at the halfway mark.

Leeds: Rangers target Summerville

Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville is the subject of a transfer battle between Rangers and Hamburg, according to Frankfurter Rundschau (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Right-winger Summerville joined Leeds from Feyenoord’s academy in September 2020. He’s gone on to make eight appearances for the Whites’ senior side, including five in the Premier League this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

But the 20-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of next season, hasn’t featured in the top-flight since the 4-1 defeat against Arsenal on 18 December.

Hamburg’s directors apparently tried to sign the Dutchman in January but Leeds refused to let him move.

New Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has spoken to the player about the importance of his ‘professional behaviour, work ethic and his mentality’.

The latest

Rangers hold an interest in Summerville and ‘have more money’ to spend on the deal than fellow suitors Hamburg, per SW.

The Bundesliga 2 side were left feeling ‘bitter’ after their January move failed, but they are willing to ‘make another attempt for him’ in the summer.

The verdict

If Leeds do let Summerville go, it ought to be on loan. He’s shown his promise at Under-23 level for The Whites, scoring 13 goals and providing eight assists in 27 appearances.

Journalist Beren Cross says the ‘runaway train’ has been ‘catching the eye’, while U23 boss Andrew Taylor has even dubbed him ‘sensational’.

They could come to regret letting him go permanently after handing him only limited opportunities.

A loan move would offer him the opportunity to gain valuable experience of playing regular men’s football and, if Leeds do later decide to sell, it could well increase his value.

They may be a little hesitant to send him to Rangers, however, on the back of fellow youngster Amad Diallo’s unsuccessful loan switch from Manchester United.

The Gers reportedly intend to send Diallo back to Manchester at the earliest opportunity after things turned ‘sour’.

In other news, Leeds are ‘very likely’ to make this signing.

Pietersen out for duck as Surrey youngsters shine

Kevin Pietersen made a second-ball duck on his first-class Surrey debut as his team-mates otherwise enjoyed a good first day with the bat to reach 324 for 6 in their County Championship match with Glamorgan

On a day when chief executive Chris Adams held an impromptu meeting with several dozen disgruntled members during a rain break, it would have heartened the Surrey faithful that two of their younger players held centre court at an overcast Oval. There would also have been more than a smirk or two in the pavilion when Kevin Pietersen, a far from popular short-term signing, made a second-ball duck on his first-class debut for the county. But despite two wobbles Surrey turned in a more solid display to reach 324 for 6 by the close against promotion-chasing Glamorgan. The first session, split by a two-hour delay caused by a heavy downpour, was dominated by Jason Roy, a 20-year-old from Millfield School who is rapidly making a name for himself as a hard-hitting opener. He played with assurance and unleashed some rasping off-side shots, mainly off the front foot, on his way to 69 off 72 balls in only his second first-class match. On his debut he scored 76, and there have also been some blitzes in limited-overs outings.Roy was joined by Mark Ramprakash after teenager Tom Lancefield poked loosely at a ball he should have left. Ramprakash, who turned 41 on Sunday, is more than twice Roy’s age and it takes him a little while to get things underway these days, but after a subdued hour he suddenly exploded into life with some corking drives. As Surrey threatened to take full control, the introduction of spin in the form of Dean Cosker changed the flow of the game. In his first over Roy skipped down the track and slammed him back over his head, but trying to repeat the shot in the next over he was bowled.Pietersen’s problems against slow left-armers are well documented, and even had Cosker not been on when he strode to the middle he would surely have been summoned straight away. Pietersen pushed forward but not far enough to convince umpire Nick Cook and after a long deliberation was adjudged leg before. Soon after Ramprakash, who was looking set for one of his long stays, was bowled by one from Cosker that turned across him. From 119 for 1 Surrey had slid to 136 for 4 and the muttering had resumed.Glamorgan celebrate after removing Kevin Pietersen for a duck•PA Photos

Rory Hamilton-Brown has had a tough season both personally and as captain. But he set out to attack from the off, and did so with a string of powerful drives – two for six over long-off into the Barrington Stand – and pulls. Racing along at more than a run-a-ball he treated a string of bowling changes with equal contempt, his six sixes coming off five different victims. With a far-from-pedestrian Gary Wilson he added 127 in just 21 overs for the fifth wicket.Mark Cosgrove finally removed Wilson for 39 and four balls later the reintroduction of Cosker did for Hamilton-Brown as on 96 he charged down the track to his first delivery, missed and was left high and dry as Mark Wallace completed a simple stumping. As the low, grey clouds rumbled round The Oval Surrey again dug in, as Chris Schofield and Gareth Batty added 61 at a far more sedate rate to see them through to the close without any alarms. It will take many more battling performances like this to placate the members but it is a step in the right direction.
