In 2009 he made his first appearance for the senior squad in the Friends Provident Trophy against Surrey at The Oval and went on to feature in the 40-over competition later in the season. He also played an Under-19 Test for England against Bangladesh at Derby in July, making 72 in the first innings and an unbeaten 17 in the second.Stokes said he is looking forward to learning from the senior players in a very successful club. “It’s been an exciting few weeks for me and I’m really happy to have signed my first professional contract. It’s great to be involved with such a successful club and it’s been a real benefit to have a varied group of players around me who I can go to for advice. I can’t wait for the 2010 season to start.”Geoff Cook, the Durham coach, said the Stokes had been rewarded for the hard work he put in this season. “We set Ben a number of challenging targets for the 2009 season and he worked incredibly hard to meet them. The transition from Academy to second XI and on to the first team can be a tough one but I have been impressed by the way he has performed. He’s a great young talent and I’m pleased that he’s going to be part of the squad for the foreseeable future.”

On the second morning at the MCG, Cricket Australia launched a “Know When to Declare” campaign aimed at responsible drinking and understanding when you’ve had enough. The message was flashed up on the big screen throughout the day and the wording was appropriate for Ricky Ponting, who is starting to recognise the limitations of his team and realises that pushing on too long can result in a nasty hangover.Ponting closed Australia’s effort at 5 for 454, which was the smallest total he had ever declared on in the first innings of a Test and the lowest for any Australian team in nearly 30 years, excluding rain-affected matches. A flat, unhelpful surface labelled as Faisalabad-like by Mohammad Asif certainly affected Ponting’s decision to declare earlier than most onlookers expected.But it has also started to dawn on the captain that he can no longer rely on his bowlers to skittle a side in a matter of hours, as he could during the Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath years. Australia’s young attack has potential but for now needs time to bowl teams out, although they started well with four wickets before stumps on the second day.Since the retirement of Warne and McGrath, Australia have played 29 Tests and they’ve dismissed teams in fewer than 70 overs on nine occasions. In the same number of matches leading up to the stars’ farewell, Australia achieved that 19 times. During the West Indies series, Ponting said that he sometimes expects too much of his bowlers and gets grumpy when they fail to deliver the wickets that he demands.That contributed to his decision here, as did his dislike of enforcing the follow-on. When he did it at the Gabba last month his strike bowler Ben Hilfenhaus was ruled out for the rest of the summer and Australia’s long list of fast-bowling injuries will discourage him from doing it again in the near future. His bold, attacking move was commended by many at the MCG, including the Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam.”I thought it was a very positive declaration,” Intikhab said. “I think it was very wise that he declared. He needed more time. Those days have gone of getting other people to follow-on. You need to give some rest to your bowlers also. I think it was a very positive, very exciting declaration.”Ponting has had plenty of learning opportunities. In Cardiff, he let Australia’s innings drag on for 181 overs. It gave Australia just over a day to dismiss England and win the match, but they couldn’t do it. Two summers ago, only a last-minute gamble on Michael Clarke rescued Australia from a similar result against India at the SCG.Australia’s prime minister Kevin Rudd was at the MCG to help launch the Know When to Declare campaign and during a stint in the commentary box he told Warne that it was his national duty to make a comeback. Ponting’s responsibility is to have realistic expectations of a Warne-less attack still learning about Test cricket.

Flocking to Twitter, a number of Manchester City fans have reacted to a transfer claim coming out of Eastlands involving Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The England international was a major target for Pep Guardiola in the summer, with City even lodging bids of £100m according to Sky Sports.

However, these efforts to sign Spurs’ prized asset weren’t enough, with the 29-year-old remaining in north London, thus ending City’s hopes of signing a world class centre-forward over that transfer window.

While Guardiola has stated to the press that he holds no pressing wish to sign a striker in January, The Athletic have come out with a claim to the contrary, and it involves Kane again.

According to their information, the Spaniard is still ‘desperate’ for City to sign a forward, with sources close to the Sky Blues boss believing that the Tottenham superstar is ‘perfect’ for them. The report added that a move for Kane ‘would be welcomed’ at Eastlands next month.

Kane is certainly not without his merits as a transfer target, especially considering that he can play as false nine and won the Premier League Golden Boot last year, scoring an incredible 23 goals and setting up 14 more in the top flight alone.

Taking this into account, it’s not surprising that some supporters still want him at the club, with Bradford City defender Liam Ridehalgh even calling Kane a ‘monster’.

However, others have reacted to this fresh claim with a bit of scepticism given the long-winded and eventually fruitless summer saga over Kane’s signature, not to mention their links to much younger options like Erling Haaland or Dusan Vlahovic.

O São Paulo ainda não conversa abertamente sobre a volta de Kaká. A diretoria espera a equipe se livrar completamente de qualquer risco de rebaixamento no Brasileiro e, também, aguarda o ídolo se posicionar se vai ou não continuar com a sua carreira. Além disso, Dorival Júnior sabe que o astro não atuará sempre e, pensando dentro de campo, quer peças velozes para que o time não fique pesado com a sua entrada.

Kaká já admitiu que, caso decida voltar ao Brasil, ficando mais próximo dos filhos, o São Paulo seria um caminho mais natural, por ter sido revelado no clube e elogiado em sua segunda passagem, em 2014, sendo vice-campeão brasileiro. Mas, por enquanto, ele não tomou qualquer decisão sobre seu futuro.

– Esse é um momento meu, muito pessoal, muito próximo da família, de quem realmente me conhece intimamente para decidir meus passos no futuro. Dentro ou fora de campo. Mas, antes do final do ano, tenho de estar com isso decidido na cabeça.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport (via The Mirror), who claim that Antonio Conte has identified the Juventus winger as one of his primary targets in the winter market.

It is also reported that Massimiliano Allegri would be willing to consider the sale of the 21-year-old this month, with the Serie A side valuing the Sweden international between £25m and £30m.

The report goes on to state that the 52-year-old Spurs boss is willing to offer either Giovani Lo Celso or Tanguy Ndombele as a potential makeweight in a move for Kulusevski, something which it is claimed the Bianconeri may well be tempted by.

Conte can axe Emerson with Kulusevski

While Emerson Royal only joined Tottenham in what was a €30m (£25.8m) move last summer, it has been recently reported that, as a result of his below-par performances so far for Spurs, Conte is already planning on signing an upgrade on the Brazil international in January.

And, while it is true that Kulusevski has not exactly been at his best since his £31.5m move to Juventus back in 2020, the versatile right-winger proved during a loan spell with Parma back in 2019/20 that, when given the opportunity to do so, he can return incredibly impressive metrics.

Indeed, over his 36 Serie A appearances that season, the £27m-rated man scored ten goals, provided eight assists and created a whopping 13 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.7 shots and making 2.2 key passes per game.

The £78k-per-week forward also impressed in a defensive capacity, making an average of 0.6 interceptions, 1.1 tackles and winning 4.6 duels per fixture – something that would suggest the 21-year-old would be very well suited to playing in Conte’s right wing-back role.

These returns saw the Swede earn a rather astonishing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as Parma’s second-best performer in the top flight of Italian football that season.

As such, it would certainly appear as if the arrival of Kulusevski could allow Conte to axe one of Fabio Paratici’s first signings last summer in the shape of the player who Alasdair Gold dubbed an “incredible” talent, something that we believe would be a very wise move considering the sheer amount of potential the young Juventus player clearly possesses, coupled with Emerson’s disappointing first half-season in north London.

The head of Pakistan’s parliamentary committee on sports has called for the sacking of PCB chairman Ijaz Butt, calling him “physically unfit” and questioning his handling of the aftermath of the Lahore attack on the Sri Lankan team’s bus last March.Jamshed Dasti urged Pakistan’s president Asif Ali Zardari to dismiss the 71-year-old Butt. “He (Butt) has gone too old,” Dasti said. “Mr Butt is physically unfit, he can’t even walk properly, he can’t even see properly.” Zardari, who is also patron of the PCB, had appointed Butt in October 2008 in place of Nasim Ashraf.”Mr. Butt has also done nothing to help in finding what went wrong when gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore last year,” Dasti said. Several Sri Lanka players were injured and six policemen were killed when gunmen opened fire at the visitors’ team bus and security convoy last March.In October, Dasti had also levelled match-fixing allegations and called for changes in the PCB after Pakistan crashed out of the Champions Trophy. He had called then-captain Younis Khan for a meeting seeking an explanation about the team’s loss to Australia in a close league match; Younis resigned after the meeting but was later reinstated.Pakistan’s Test series loss in Australia is also a cause of concern for Dasti. He said the team manager Abdul Raqueeb, coach Intikhab Alam, PCB chief operating officer Wasim Bari and Butt will be summoned in the near future to discuss the national team’s performance.”I hope by the time next meeting is convened Mr Butt will be replaced by some other responsible man as the chairman of the PCB,” Dasti said.The PCB responded by calling Dasti’s remarks “unworthy for a member of parliament and not befitting to his stature.” In a statement, the board said: “Such personal remarks cannot and will not do anything good for the game of cricket in Pakistan as we have already witnessed the impact of such remarks that put the career of a very refined cricketer Younis Khan in turmoil.”Butt is currently in Bangladesh for the launching ceremony of the 2011 World Cup.
