West Bromwich Albion fans were far from happy with the performance of Robert Snodgrass during their side’s 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United.

The Baggies lost despite taking the lead through Matt Phillips as Jayden Bogle and Billy Sharp scored in the second half for the Blades to turn things around. This result now leaves Sam Allardyce’s side nine points adrift of Brighton in 17th place (Sky Sports) – their chances of survival are getting slimmer and slimmer.

Snodgrass is a winger by trade, but Allardyce decided to play him in central midfield alongside Jake Livermore. The two together failed to provide any dynamism and intensity in the middle of the park. It was an experiment that just did not the work.

The Baggies fans were far from happy with his display, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

O técnico teve o nome gritado durante todo o trajeto de uma ponta a outra do campo. E a torcida ainda relembrou o refrão que fez sucesso naquele ano de 2011: “Uh, vai pra cima. É o trem-bala da Colina”.

Depois do jogo e a confirmação do empate, Ricardo fez questão de retribuir o carinho.

– Vou me emocionar porque trabalhei no Vasco. O time brigou na Copa do Brasil, ganhamos. Brigamos no Brasileiro e na Libertadores. Esse reconhecimento da torcida do Vasco… Eu vou fazer o reconhecimento (movimento de mãos para frente, em reverência). Agradeço e faço a reverência (movimento novamente) à torcida do Vasco. Eles me apoiaram em um momento difícil, não só eles, mas eu só tenho a agradecer – afirmou o treinador.

David Moyes may be able to allow Fabian Balbuena to leave West Ham United at the end of the season by beating competition from Besiktas for Vorskla Poltava defender Pape-Alioune Ndiaye.

What’s the word?

According to Foot Mercato, Besiktas are tracking Ndiaye’s situation with his Vorskla contract due to expire in June.

The towering 6 ft 7 centre-half is highly-regarded in Turkey and has previously been scouted by SC Braga and West Ham, plus Ligue 1 outfits including LOSC Lille.

Reports by Goal France in December claimed that Moyes had personally received reports on the 23-year-old, having started to monitor the Frenchman last summer after he begun establishing himself in Ukraine.

Ndiaye moved to the Premier Liga outfit in 2019 and started 15 of his 17 appearances during the defender’s debut campaign at the Butovsky Vorskla Stadium, and has missed just one of 15 possible fixtures across all competitions this term as a key aspect of the Zeleno-Bili side.

Vorskla boss Yuriy Maksymov is noted to have compared Ndiaye to Neymar, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo recently in saying, with his tongue firmly in cheek, that he is worth at least €100m (£88m) such is the level the FC Valenciennes product has been playing at.

Should West Ham sign Ndiaye?

Ndiaye is a very much unproven product among Europe’s top-five leagues, but is seemingly continually on the up in Ukraine after being named in the country’s team of the best up-and-coming talents last season.

It naturally remains to be seen if he is able to replicate his Premier Liga exploits in the Premier League, Ligue 1, Super Lig or the Liga NOS, yet that should not stop Moyes from exploring luring the 22-year-old to West Ham.

Few would have known who Tomas Soucek was before the midfielder arrived at the London Stadium from Slavia Prague last January, yet few will now struggle to not sing the Czech Republic international’s praises. Or those of his compatriot Vladimir Coufal.

Obviously, Ndiaye plays in a different position to Soucek and Coufal, but the path for coming to the Premier League from a lesser eastern European country and making a success of things under Moyes is clear as day.

Ndiaye being the next in line may even allow the Hammers to part with Fabian Balbuena at the end of the season, with reports surfacing on Deadline Day that the Paraguayan had been made available for a transfer with his £40,000-per-week contract up this summer.

Balbuena has clearly fallen down Moyes’ pecking order in recent months, with the 29-year-old brute overlooked at Manchester United despite Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop both being forced off through injuries during the FA Cup defeat on Tuesday night.

Moyes has now only called on Balbuena to feature once in the Hammers’ last 11 games across all competitions, after starting the season with 12 outings in 15 Premier League matches.

West Ham will be expected to look for alternatives to the £7m-rated centre-back over the coming months if Balbuena does not put pen to paper on new terms, and the heightening interest in Ndiaye would suggest the soon-to-be free-agent would be a smart replacement.

AND in other news, West Ham will have to pay in excess of £26.5m to land a prolific 18 goal striker in the summer…

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Aston Villa to axe Ross Barkley for their home game versus Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former AVFC and England international striker has claimed that Morgan Sanson would be a better option for Dean Smith in the middle of the park as he is more defensively-minded amid the threat that Brendan Rodgers’ team poses in attack:

“I think Dean Smith will want to persist with Barkley.

“I think this next game against Leicester is the type of game that will suit Sanson, he’s not as attacking as Barkley. 

“Leicester are a dangerous team and this game is going to be about which team gets their tactics right, that team will win the game. 

“Leicester can mix it up and play very defensively sometimes and on the counter-attack. I think for this game Villa need to change their tactics and go more defensive.

“Smith can’t leave any space in behind for Jamie Vardy to run into. So maybe it’s a game that doesn’t suit Barkley.

“He’s has been outstanding since coming to Aston Villa but in recent games, I’ve been disappointed with him.

“The Barkley I know, the Barkley that everyone has known for the last five or six years, takes people on with speed. I haven’t seen that in recent weeks which is disappointing. It’s probably fair that Sanson gets a chance now.”

May be an opportunity for Sanson

The match against the Foxes may be an opportunity for Sanson to show as to why Villa brought him in in the January transfer window.

The central midfield player is more defensively-minded than Barkley as Agbonlahor has claimed, averaging more tackles (1.8) and interceptions (0.8) than the Chelsea loanee while he was playing for Marseille earlier on in the 2020/21 term (Whoscored).

While the £17.5m-rated Barkley does offer an attacking threat, the Midlands club need to be particularly cautious against a side that is trying to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for next season, and playing Sanson ahead of the 27-year-old may well be a smart move to take by Smith.

He is currently going through a bit of a dry spell at this particular moment in time with no goals or assists in his last three matches in the top flight, and so a it may be a wise idea to leave the Englishman on the bench in place of Sanson and thus take him out of the firing line.
