Speaking in his pre-match press conference before travelling to the Emirates this Saturday, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl had some interesting comments on his side’s playing style of late and what he has been trying to implement.

Whatever the Saints have been doing recently hasn’t been working. The south coast side currently sit just one point off the bottom of the Premier League title, having amassed just eight points from their opening 12 games.

Southampton also have the leakiest defence in England’s top-flight, conceding 29 goals in their 12 outings – alarmingly, this works out at an average of 2.4 concessions per game.

What did he say?

Hasenhuttl said, via Sky Sports: “We need to see a good trigger after losing the ball, good momentum when we go to fight to win it back again immediately.

“This is something we were working on during the last two weeks and especially with the players that have been here.

“You could see that we forgot a little bit about this behaviour – it was this behaviour that made us strong and for a long time.”

Clearly keen to get back to effective method

The Athletic’s Carl Anka recently detailed how Southampton’s high-intensity pressing style was reaping some rewards earlier in the campaign, although it appears that the players have slowly been shying away from what the ‘Alpine Klopp’ has been famed for throughout his career.

We ourselves outlined how the Saints have no reason to stop such a playing style, as they currently find themselves joint-third in terms of shots earned after a high-press – only Manchester City and Chelsea have taken more shots on goal following an intense harrying of the opposition.

Perhaps Hasenhuttl’s players became timid, as they do not possess a man capable of finishing off these shots, so their enthusiasm to continue pressing gradually waned.

While the current situation at St Mary’s is not pleasant for anyone involved, it is somewhat reassuring to see Hasenhuttl identify that the pressing ethos was a positive, and that his players must begin to adopt it effectively once again – if they don’t, staying in this division may be a far-fetched thing.

Having already sealed qualification to the knockout stages of the Europa League thanks to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Partizan Belgrade almost three weeks ago, Manchester United head into Thursday’s clash against FC Astana in relative comfort.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side know that even a defeat against the Kazakhstan side would still leave their hopes of finishing at the top of Group L in their own hands, with second-placed AZ Alkmaar left to play on the final match-day.

With the incredibly long journey, and the circumstances surrounding their position in the group, it has been little surprise to see Solskjaer name an incredibly young squad for the game. The Red Devils’ youth academy is well represented, and the majority of them will no doubt be hoping that they get given a chance to impress. Below is a look at how they might line up.

Having left both David de Gea and Sergio Romero back in Manchester, 36-year-old Lee Grant will make his first start for the club according to Solskjaer, with the goalkeeping position being the one area where the United boss opts for a touch of experience.

In front of Grant, Luke Shaw could make his long-awaited return from injury, whilst the likes of Axel Tuanzebe, Dishon Bernard and Ethan Laird are likely to round out a very young-looking back-line (the latter two Solskjaer has confirmed will start). And the average age doesn’t exactly get any higher with Solskjaer’s likely options further forward either.

In central midfield, James Garner could get a rare start having made cameo appearances for the first-team this season, whilst alongside him, Dylan Levitt – called up to the recent Wales squad – will get the nod as per Solskjaer’s pre-match press conference.

And with Mason Greenwood surely getting a chance up front after his super-sub appearance against Sheffield United last Sunday, Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong and Jesse Lingard could be the players tasked with providing him with service – with the latter perhaps even getting the responsibility of being captain for the night based on his experience.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have been told this potential Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replacement could “get more out of them” by pundit.

Leeds United are sitting pretty in the Championship at the moment as they’re currently five points clear of third place and they look good value to go on and achieve automatic promotion.

However, we’ve been here before, and it’s likely that many will be fearing a repeat performance of last season’s capitulation.

At the time, Leeds’ poor run towards the back end of the season was partly attributed to the much perpetuated ‘Bielsa burnout’, but one player from that team believes that wasn’t the case.

What’s been said then?

Kemar Roofe took part in an interview with The Daily Mail, and he spoke about his time at the club.

One topic that the striker was keen to speak about was the rigorous training regime that the Argentine put him and his teammates through.

“You’re coming off the training pitch properly tired. You’d be empty. You couldn’t go and do extra finishing. Before every game we’d work on about five different formations and our individual roles in each of those.”

“We’d play 11 versus 11 at least once a week and that was harder than an actual game. He’d be shouting, shouting, keep going. If he saw you walking he would be on to you, shouting. No rest. You had to be at 100 per cent. People thought we’d die off but our stats showed we didn’t,

“Our training load didn’t die off, either. If anything, he upped it through the season. You’re told you’ll get fatigue and you can only do a certain amount of kilometres during the week before a game, but he blew those theories out of the water.”

Encouraging

This should be music to the ears of every United fan.

We know the Argentine is still going on with his tough regimes after Kalvin Phillips’ recent comments on his ‘murderball’ sessions, but there is seemingly no need to be worried about potential burnout.

Unfortunately, Roofe was unable to put his finger on what cost United last term, but the fact that he wrote off this particular theory should be encouraging. Leeds’ injury history has been well documented but even despite that, it looks as though Bielsa continues to push his players.

This might seem like madness but the Anderlecht striker claims the pure effort put in by the players in training wasn’t actually the issue.

Roofe’s comments make it seem as if they’ve been doing everything right on the training ground, so the Whites shouldn’t be expecting a repeat performance of the disastrous conclusion of the 2018/19 campaign.

If you bear in mind Bielsa has now had even more time to bed in this method, the players should be accustomed to it.

وأوضح المجلس أنه يضع ملف تجديد فرجاني ساسي على رأس أولوياته، ويسعى خلال الأيام القليلة القادمة لحسم ملف اللاعب بشكل نهائي وعقد جلسة معه بحضور وكيل أعمالة.

وأكد المجلس أن النادي ليس مسؤولا عن أي تصريحات بشأن هذا الملف إلا عن طريق حسين لبيب رئيس النادي والمتحدث الرسمي باسم النادي أو الإعلامي عمرو الدردير المتحدث الصحفي للنادي، وأن أعضاء المجلس لم يدلوا بأي تصريحات منذ أن تولوا مهمة إدارة النادي عن فرجاني ساسي أو أي أرقام تخص النادي.

According to The Mirror, Roma forward Edin Dzeko has emerged as a potential transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old has been in impressive form for Roma during the 2019/20 campaign, scoring eight times in 19 appearances in all competitions.

What’s more, the striker has managed 95 goals in 198 outings for his Italian club since arriving from Manchester City.

According to The Mirror, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has sent scouts to watch Dzeko this season as the London club look to bring in support for Harry Kane.

And there are some supporters who would welcome such a purchase.

However, not everyone shares the same opinion, with some of the supporters believing that the arrival of Dzeko would make it difficult for Troy Parrott to fully develop.

Parrott made his Premier League debut against Burnley on Saturday afternoon, although the arrival of Dzeko would surely push the teenager down the pecking order.

Others, meanwhile, have claimed that Dzeko is too old for Tottenham. One fan even said that the forward was actually now “2 billion years old”, which is pretty good going for a human being, let alone a footballer still operating at the highest level.

هولندا بعد الانتصار على الجبل الأسود، رفعت رصيدها من النقاط في المجموعة السابعة إلى 10، بفارق نقطة عن تركيا التي تتصدر المجموعة بـ11 نقطة.

يذكر أن هولندا تواجه تركيا، مساء الثلاثاء القادم، على ملعب “أمستردام أرينا”، ضمن لقاءات الجولة السادسة، في تمام التاسعة إلا ربع بتوقيت القاهرة.

A opinião aconteceu durante um debate no pós-jogo da vitória da Seleção Brasileira sobre o Chile por 2 a 1, na última quarta-feira (11), em Santiago, pelas Eliminatórias da Copa do Mundo. Na ocasião, Mauro Cezar analisava a presença de Igor Jesus e Luiz Henrique no futebol brasileiro. Os jogadores, no entendimento do comentarista, deveriam estar atuando fora do país, não fosse a SAF do Botafogo. Assim, ele classificou as contratações dos atletas como “fantasiosas”.

A declaração repercutiu de forma negativa. O jornalista alegou ter sofrido ataques nas redes sociais. Para ele, a análise feita no programa foi retirada de contexto por John Textor, dono da SAF do Botafogo, que ironizou a declaração. Em um vídeo postado nas redes sociais, o comunicador justificou a fala e apontou a reação como mimizenta.

– A última dos mimizentos é ficar de beicinho por ouvir o óbvio. Tirando do contexto, evidentemente… Tem gente que fica de mimimi. Até jornalista rodado se comportando como torcedor bobo. Pelo amor de Deus, gente! Tenho nada contra o Botafogo, nada contra a SAF. Foi apenas uma afirmação dentro de um contexto que era debatido dentro do programa – explicou o jornalista em sua conta no Instagram.

“Vocês falaram “joga no Brasil” (se referindo a Luiz Henrique, jogador do Botafogo). Joga no Brasil por conta dessa fantasia que é a SAF no futebol brasileiro. Um clube tem dívida colossal, vem um cara, compra, não precisa quitar dívida e sai contratando jogador, tem vários clubes. Em condições normais, os dois estariam jogando lá fora. Chegaram há pouquíssimo tempo por conta dessa situação. Discordo de vocês de “jogam no Brasil”, é coisa meio fantasiosa, é jogador de SAF, o Botafogo ia contratar se não fosse SAF? Nunca ia contratar. É uma realidade paralela. O futebol brasileiro não teria condição de tê-los, ou esse clube não teria condição de tê-los.

Destaques na vitória do Brasil
