Memphis Depay struggled to make his mark in the Premier League with Manchester United, but that has not stopped a number of Liverpool fans calling for their club to sign the Netherlands international this summer.

Depay turned out for United between 2015 and 2017 – scoring seven times in 53 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

There was never any doubting the Dutchman’s ability, but he struggled to put together a consistent run of form during his time at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old has scored 37 times and registered 39 assists since arriving at Lyon, though, and has also been in good form for his national team.

This season, the versatile attacker, who only has two years left to run on his current deal, has managed 14 goals and 10 assists in 45 games for Lyon.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Inside Elland Road podcast (37:00), Phil Hay and Joe Urquhart delivered a spot on verdict about what Leeds need to do next season.

The Whites brought in four players from two of the Premier League’s best clubs, but many of them failed to make any impact for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

What’s been said then?

When discussing the Yorkshire club’s transfer business in the upcoming window, the journalist stated that the Whites need to bring in better loanees next year.

“I think they will probably go heavily on the loan market again with Premier League loan signings, but if they do they need to do a hell of a lot better than the clutch of Harrison, Baker, Blackman and Izzy Brown because they’ve not been good enough,” Hay said.

His co-host agreed with that sentiment saying:

“The quality that’s coming in if they’re going to dip into the loan market needs to be far better than what they brought in last year. The business needs to be done early to get them in for pre-season.”

Orta must heed this warning

The two Yorkshire Evening Post writers are spot on with their assessment of what Leeds need to do if they are to bring in loan players again this summer.

The three Chelsea loanees played just 223 league minutes for the Whites, and while Jack Harrison was a regular, he didn’t perform up to the standards of a player who is reportedly on £51,000-a-week.

Players such as Tammy Abraham, Dean Henderson and Mason Mount have proven that there is plenty of talent to pick up on loan from the top flight, but Leeds need to be a bit more diligent moving forward.

It was known that Izzy Brown was injured when he arrived at Elland Road, and it was immediately clear to see that Lewis Baker wasn’t a Bielsa player.

If Victor Orta is to look towards the top teams in England for loan signings next year, he must be more attentive when choosing his targets.

أفادت تقارير صحفية إسبانية أن نادي إشبيلية يرغب في التعاقد مع لاعب ريال مدريد المعار لـ بوروسيا دورتموند راينير جيسوس.

Every club has its cult heroes. Football would be nothing without them; soulless, pointless, passionless and all the other less’s out there. Southampton had Matt Le Tissier, Liverpool had Dirk Kuyt, Manchester United had Diego Forlan, Blackburn had Tugay and, most importantly, Aston Villa had our man in question, Juan Pablo Angel.

The Colombian may not have got off to the best start following a record £9.5million move from River Plate, but surely that makes what follows so utterly special? A comeback tale we can all get behind. Honestly, who doesn’t love that?

Sometimes all it takes is one goal to book yourself a spot in club folklore and Angel’s first and perhaps most memorable goal for the Villans arrived on the final day of the 2000/01 campaign against Midlands rivals Coventry.

The Sky Blues had been competing in the top flight of English football for 34 years before the South American popped up at the back post and half-volleyed home the goal that would ultimately hand the club a sentence of eighteen years (and counting) of football league mediocrity.

Their misery was, and still is, oh so sweet in the morbid kind of way us football fans seem to love.

Villa’s No.9 hit the ground running from thereon. The Premier League bore witness to a man who commanded an absolute talent for heading the ball, as well as the usual generic traits we all love to see in our favourite players; speed, strength, passion and willingness.

While statistics aren’t the be all and end all when it comes to securing cult hero status, it helped that the South American grabbed himself 16 league goals during the 2003/04 season – and 23 in all competitions.

The following campaign wasn’t as fruitful we admit, but he still hit double figures and a fine goal against Chelsea ensured that he will remain a prominent figure in Villa’s history.

ويغيب ديانج عن مباراة الأهلي والزمالك بسبب إصابته بفيروس كورونا، بجانب وليد سليمان وصالح جمعة.

جدير بالذكر أن الأهلي تأهل للدور النهائي من بطولة دوري أبطال أفريقيا بعدما تخطى عقبة الوداد المغربي بنتيجة 5-1 ذهابًا وإيابًا.

Aston Villa have returned to the Premier League with a loanee-laden squad. Tammy Abraham, Tyrone Mings and Anwar El Ghazi all played pivotal roles in the club’s promotion bid, yet all three could be plying their trade away from Villa Park next season.

Dean Smith only needs to take a look at how the widely-revered Fulham side managed by Slavisa Jokanovic slumped in the Premier League to acknowledge that a summer spending spree is not a necessary prerequisite to top-flight success. But, even with the Cottagers’ failure to compete at the top level still firmly in mind, there is no doubt that Villa need to bolster their squad.

After scoring the opening goal in the play-off final, El Ghazi’s reputation catapulted into newfound levels of popularity, such is the extent of the romanticism associated with such an emotionally-charged and season-defining moment. As the Dutch winger stooped to inadvertently shoulder the ball into the corner of the Derby net, time appeared to stop for a fleeting moment. Breaths were held and pupils dilated at the claret and blue end of Wembley. Then hell unleashed.

In a moment of such intense euphoria judgements are naturally clouded. That’s right, in that very moment El Ghazi was basically akin to a Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo hybrid.

With the climax of the season evoking a whole host of fresh discussions concerning Villa’s squad, you can bet that plenty of fans sitting on the fence over the goalscorer’s future were persuaded to call for a permanent deal at that very moment. The Villans undoubtedly need to bring at least one wing-wizard to the club this summer, but a recent report from the Daily Mail has hinted that it may be Joe Lolley and not El Ghazi who makes the switch.

Both players have been strong competitors in the Championship this season, but how do they compare to one another?

A quick glance at some fundamental statistics is telling about their respective influences in the league this season.

Lolley has been an outstanding performer at the City Ground, wracking an incredible total of 110 dribbles and 84 key passes, comfortably dwarfing the numbers provided by El Ghazi.

Evidently, the 26-year-old transfer target showcased a superior level of dynamism and creative incision compared to the former Ajax talent, and that fact could go some way to explaining why is the subject of a potential £10 million move.

To further compound his serious credentials, he bagged 11 goals in the Championship campaign and also provided 11 assists. Question marks undoubtedly remain over his ability to emulate that form in the top-flight but that is the type of return which suggests he is ready for the step up in class.

While it must be considered that Lolley made more appearances than El Ghazi this season, the disparity between the statistical influence of both players is wide enough to prove that Forest’s talisman could offer a greater threat in the promised land of the Premier League next season.

Time will tell how this potential saga plays out, but it’s clear who the outstanding candidate is on recent form.

ويراهن برشلونة على اقتراب انتهاء عقد جارسيا مع مانشستر سيتي، من أجل التواجد في قلعة “كامب نو” بسعر أقل مما يطلبه النادي الإنجليزي بقيمة 20 مليون يورو (10 مليون ثابت، 10 مليون متغيرة).

وتابعت الصحيفة الشهيرة أن برشلونة من المتوقع أن يبيع بعض اللاعبين الذين لا يعتمد عليهم المدرب، رونالد كومان، من أجل تمويل هذه الصفقة في يناير.

ومن ضمن هؤلاء اللاعبين، جونيور فيربو، كارليس ألينيا، صامويل أومتيتي وربما مارتن برايثوايت رغم تألقه في المباريات الأخيرة سواء في الدوري الإسباني أو دوري أبطال أوروبا.

It’s fair to say that Manchester United’s striking department has hit somewhat of a crisis since that dreamy night in Paris back in March. Indeed, despite some of the talent the club has on its books when it comes to forwards, the goals have largely dried up.

Obviously, during their sensational night at the Parc de Paris, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford built up a partnership akin to the club’s legendary ones in the past. Together, they put the French champions to the sword, but their dip in form has been really rather alarming.

Amazingly, they contributed only a single goal after that historic night. Truly awful stuff. While The Sun reported in May that Lukaku has been told he can leave, Rashford is seemingly going nowhere amid suggestions of a new contract raised by the Daily Mirror back in April. Still, the ‘Manc born and bred’ as he’s called by the supporters clearly needs proper service to reach his peak.

Well, if reports are to be believed, things could be getting better for him.

That’s because, according to the Daily Mail, United are apparently interested in potentially replacing Lukaku with Eintracht Frankfurt heavyweight Sebastian Haller. 15 goals and 9 assists for the Bundesliga outfit this season has seen the Frenchman’s stock rise of late and, in our minds, he’d be an excellent addition.

Rashford, Lukaku and Anthony Martial failed to contribute more goals individually in the Premier League, so it’s easy to see a natural fit here. Moreover, it was Haller’s unselfish work which allowed partner-in-crime Luka Jovic to hit headlines which earned him a Real Madrid move.

Jovic himself spoke to of the ‘chemistry’ he had with the 24-year-old over the course of the campaign and, while there are obviously no guarantees he’d replicate that with someone like Rashford, there’s clearly a talent in his game when it comes to operating in a fluid frontline.

Now, you wouldn’t exactly describe the Red Devils’ attack as fluid right now but, at their best this season on that scintillating winning run when Jose Mourinho was sacked, there were at least signs that it could be considering some of the performances.

For an electric, opportunistic striker like Rashford, Haller looks a natural foil. Having won 6.6 aerial duels on average per 90 mins (thanks to WhoScored), perhaps he’d be ideal to provide both the England man and the aforementioned Martial a platform from which to roam around.
