Look at him now: Dusan Tadic and Southampton

It came as no surprise when the quality of Dusan Tadic shined through in Ajax’s electrifying victory over serial winners Real Madrid – we have seen it all before in the Premier League, after all.

The Serbian playmaker was in full force on Tuesday night dominating the Real Madrid defence like they were schoolboys with their laces tied together.

His exceptional performance to hoist Ajax into the next round of the Champions League will not be forgotten anytime soon. The day the sleeping giants awaking to break the trend – a real David and Goliath story.

And if it was not sweet enough, it was made all the better by the fact that universally despised Sergio Ramos, who was alleged to have received an intentional suspension for the game, had to watch from the stands while his team were hopelessly torn apart (Independent).

But how and why was Tadic so good?

Simply: because he is.

Dusan Tadic was easily one of the most gifted players at Southampton when he arrived in 2014. Ronald Koeman, whose two-year tenure ultimately marked the encore of post-Pochettino liquid football, knew exactly how to play him: drifting around the forward line with an element of freedom to work his artistry.

Conversely, when the staggeringly boring Claude Puel, Mauricio Pellegrino and Mark Hughes governed, Tadic was rarely able to recall the form that he made him so great in previous years.

He needed new beginnings and Ajax, the home of total, uncompromising, free-flowing, free-scoring football, was the place.

As it stands, Tadic has netted 26 times and created a further 15 for his teammates in 40 appearances for the club. Remarkable stuff.

And, yes, the Eredivisie is no way near as strong as the Premier League, and frankly the defending is comical at times, but that is exactly why we have seen the best from the Serbian maestro. His can weave in and out of players, he can strut his flicks and tricks, he can make those compilation worthy passes, and most importantly he can dominate.

From the doldrums of Southampton to the sheer joy and jubilation of Ajax Amsterdam, Madrid and beyond – there is one winner here: Dusan Tadic.

Injury News: Marcelo Bielsa provides Jack Clarke update

[ad_pod ]Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa faced the media in a press conference on Thursday. His title-chasing Whites side take on Bristol City this weekend, and the Argentine coach gave an update on which first team stars would be unavailable for this fixture.18-year-old wing sensation Jack Clarke appears to have been ruled out of Saturday’s visit to Ashton Gate Stadium.

What he said

Clarke has been out of action since being taken ill whilst on the bench during the Whites’ win over Middlesbrough in February.Â

Are fans being priced out of the Championship as well as the Premier League? The angry Bolton fan in the video below certainly believes so…

As quoted by Leeds’ official Twitter account, when asked if the teenager would be ready to return in time to face the Robins, Bielsa said: “He’s well, he’s fit. He will play next week in the U23s game, and probably be available after this game to be with the group.â€

A full recording of the press conference has been made available by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

What this means

Whilst Leeds look set to have to battle on without Clarke a little while longer yet, his imminent return to the fold is great news.

The Elland Road faithful can look forward to cheering on the exciting youngster again soon, as Bielsa’s comments that “he’s well, he’s fit” are of course the four key words, meaning it’s only a matter of match fitness keeping him out for now.

The timing of Clarke’s return is also brilliant, as the race for promotion to the Premier League is likely to go down to the wire.

Fresh legs and quality squad depth will be essential throughout this crucial time. Having Clarke back in contention gives Bielsa a valuable extra option to consider when figuring out a way of managing his squad throughout this hectic, but all-important, period.

The Chalkboard: Garry Monk needs to prove he has a Birmingham plan B vs Preston

[ad_pod ]

Birmingham City’s 2-0 defeat at home to Millwall on Wednesday night made it three on the bounce for the Blues, and one thing has been painfully obvious during those losses – a lack of a plan B.

On the chalkboard

While the Midlands outfit may try and play football when possible, there is no doubt that having Lukas Jutkiewicz as an outlet up top is a useful tool given his strength and the number of aerial duels he is able to win, and they are often happy to revert to using him as a focal point for attacks.

However, and rather confusingly, Garry Monk’s men continued to play as though the Southampton-born man was on the pitch against the Lions even though he was sat on the bench, often pumping long balls forward to Che Adams and Isaac Vassell.

Unsurprisingly, the visitors dealt with those with relative ease and while it wasn’t a great showing from the players at St Andrew’s, the manager hardly came out of it smelling of roses either.

Changes against Preston

Whether Jutkiewicz returns to the starting XI or not – you would think that he would after yet another loss – Monk must set out a clear plan B for his team.

He clearly didn’t in midweek unless his players chose to ignore it, as there was no way that Adams or Vassell had as much as their centre-forward teammate of winning with the balls thrown forward from the back.

Even if Jutkiewicz is named on the team-sheet at Deepdale, the visitors will still need to mix things up more than they have been doing as the Lilywhites have a strong and dominant backline themselves, who would probably prefer a physical battle in the air.

With fixtures running out Birmingham ideally need to take all three points against a North End outfit bang in form and making a play-off push of their own, but it will only happen if Monk plays it well tactically – one area he still needs to prove himself.

Gylfi Sigurðsson has become the envy of top-six Premier League clubs

[ad_pod ]

Everton’s season has mostly been underwhelming. Marco Silva has failed to ignite and invigorate the Toffees in the manner that many had expected. Their surprising 2-0 triumph against Chelsea, the first on home soil since the 13th of January, was a welcome result that has seemingly eased the pressure that was mounting on the manager’s shoulders.

Despite healthy summer investment, which included the addition of three players from Barcelona, the Toffees have failed to fulfil expectations. Irrespective of their unfavourable form, and the fact that they’re languishing in the bottom half of the table; there have been identifiable highlights. The form and promise of Richarlison, who has totalled 12 league goals (13 in all competitions) is an encouraging sign, while Gylfi Sigurðsson, valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt, is beginning to return to the peak of his powers, justifying the club’s hefty investment for his services in 2017.

At the age of 29, he’s sustained his influence in one of the world’s most decorated divisions and his importance to Everton, particularly this season, cannot be underestimated. However, for a player of his calibre who has continually succeeded at club and international level, should he don aspirations of one final big move?

During his inaugural season in Merseyside, the initial excitement of his arrival was masked by a disappointing total of seven-goal contributions in 27 league appearances; hardly indicative of his calibre or experience. Contrastingly, this season has been markedly different in its outlook for the Icelandic midfielder, with Sigurðsson contributing towards 15 goals (scoring 12 and providing three assists) in 31 Premier League games – averaging just shy of a goal contribution every two games. It’s the best goal tally that he has amassed in a single Premier League season, bettering his record in the Bundesliga too.

As an individual who rose to prominence with Reading, and has since represented Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, spectators are well versed to his qualities. A dead-ball specialist, a creative architect and an astute technician, the midfielder is one of the most gifted players outside the league’s top six teams.

In a Swansea side that was severely threatened by relegation, and suffocated from appropriate quality in every position, the Icelander contributed towards 20 league goals (nine goals, 11 assists), which almost, single-handedly, prevented the Welsh club from being relegated during the 2016/17 season. Similarly, he has been an integral figure to the recent success of his country, contributing towards 33 goals (20 goals, 13 assists) in 64 international caps.

To focus solely on his statistical output is a disservice to a player that makes the game seem so elementary in its progression. In the final third of the pitch, and when afforded space, Sigurðsson is challenging to negate, his ability to play incisive, penetrative passes and score from long distance ensures that he exhibits a versatile attacking skill set.

Continually, the midfielder has demonstrated his effectiveness at both club and international level and plausibly, he could be of immense benefit to a top-six team, willing to accommodate his creativity. A perceptible trend in modern football has been meaningful ball retention which leads to an abundance of chance creation, showcased in the Premier League through the footballing ideals of Klopp, Pochettino and Guardiola. This focus on meaningful use of possession and penetrating attacks is attuned to the specialist skill set that Sigurðsson exhibits.

As he displayed at Swansea and is continuing to illustrate at Everton, he is capable of impacting games purposefully, regardless of the quality that surrounds him. Plausibly, his influence will only heighten if surrounded by players of greater quality, and perhaps he should look beyond Goodison Park, to honour his talent and career with potential silverware.

The most successful teams require a continuous and varied flow of goals, dependence on one player, best encapsulated by Chelsea’s reliance on Eden Hazard, can be utterly problematic and it’s unsustainable for a team vying for trophies. Not many midfielders in the league demonstrate similar quality to Sigurðsson, especially not in their statistical contributions. Resultantly, the top-six teams should be paying closer attention to his magnificent season.

Celtic: Why not try for Rafa Benitez?

Neil Lennon’s return to Celtic’s been quite eventful, as he’s achieved quite a lot of success since taking on from Brendan Rodgers. However, in order to show ambition, the Hoops need to target better.

Indeed, Peter Lawwell and the rest of the Hoops’ brain trust need to be ambitious here and think outside the box if the Scottish champions are going to hold off Rangers in the long-term.

So, as per reports (via the Daily Record), odds have suggested the club are keen on making Rafa Benitez their new manager from next season. Out of contract on Tyneside next season, no one is quite sure what will happen in regard to his future, considering the rather fraught relationship he’s had with Mike Ashley over the course of his three years in charge.

While looking for a new challenge, Parkhead could be an appealing option for him.

What the Magpies could lose would definitely Celtic’s gain. Not only will they be able to withhold their stronghold in the Premiership, but Benitez’s stature and experience can make them a force to be reckoned with. The Hoops have been disappointing in European competitions in recent seasons, but with Benitez’s arrival, that can change.

The Spaniard is a rare manager to have won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup during his celebrated managerial career. When it comes to European competition, he knows what ingredients are required to make the Hoops a commendable team outside their country.

With the correct signing and time to learn his philosophy, Rafa could weave his magic at Celtic. Not only would he drastically improve their style into a more attractive form of football, but he’ll also help the Hoops regain their reputation in pulling off surprises in European competitions.
