West Ham linked with Alexis Sanchez

According to FCInterNews, West Ham have shown an interest in signing Manchester United’s on-loan forward Alexis Sanchez.

What’s the word?

The Telegraph reported last week that Sanchez is set to return to Old Trafford at the end of the season, with Inter Milan now expected not to sign him permanently.

The former Arsenal star has struggled to make an impact at the San Siro. Injuries have limited him to just two starts in Serie A, and a mere 199 minutes of action overall.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Chile international still has two years remaining on his United contract and takes home up to £500k per week, so having Sanchez back on the books would no doubt impact the Red Devils financially.

However, it appears United could be spared by Premier League rivals West Ham, with FCInterNews claiming that they’ve requested information on Sanchez from his agent, Fernando Felicevich.

Escape route for Woodward

Sanchez was always something an unnecessary addition for United, one that appeared to be based purely on his availability as his Arsenal contract wound down rather than any real need within the first-team squad.

Jose Mourinho was already struggling to fit Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku into the same starting XI, and tellingly Sanchez has ended up playing in five different positions during his 45 United appearances without producing consistently in any of them.

Throw in the fact Sanchez had already turned 30 when United signed him, and he was a foolish addition that the club’s chief executive Ed Woodward should have blocked.

The Red Devils have been left with a huge burden on the wage bill and an ageing player with very little resale value, and ultimately that reflects worst on Woodward – the man behind United’s transfer dealings.

Bizarrely though, West Ham have emerged as a potential solution.

What are West Ham thinking?

West Ham have a knack for falling for big reputations. Just look at their current squad: Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko, Pablo Fornals and Sebastian Haller all arrived at the club after establishing big reputations elsewhere, yet the Irons find themselves out of the relegation zone on goal difference alone having struggled to knit so many illustrious names together.

There are even examples like Arvaro Arbeloa and Patrice Evra, who were brought in as free agents way after they’d started to decline and gave very little service to the club.

Sanchez falls into a similar category. Yes, he was fantastic for Arsenal – earning a place in the 2014/15 PFA Team of the Year – but the end of the current campaign will mark three seasons since he’s hit double figures in the league.

He’s clearly past his best and considering the money he’s on, it’s hard to see how this could ever work out as a cost-effective move for the Hammers. Their stupidity though could well be Woodward’s gain, with a chance to ensure United don’t end up wasting even more money paying Sanchez’s wages.

Meanwhile, Odion Ighalo has revealed what he loves about Man United.

Everton: Social media question prompts mixed fan responses

Many Everton fans have been describing the club in one sentence as part of a social media question by fan account The Toffees.

Fans of the Goodison Park club have not had many good moments to celebrate this season with former manager Marco Silva failing to find success at the club.

Form and performances have improved slightly under Silva’s replacement Carlo Ancelotti, who is expected to bring in a number of his own transfer targets this coming summer.

Sitting 12th in the Premier League table as things stand, the Toffees have very little to play for and with football currently at a standstill, fans may not be too fussed what happens to the 2019/2020 season.

Looking at the club’s recent successes and memorable moments over the past few years, The Toffees Twitter account opted to ask fans for the ‘one sentence’ they would use to describe the Merseyside club.

The question gained quite a response, with many praising the club for their on and off field efforts.

Reacting to the question posed by fan account @thetoffees_com, fans gave the following responses…

Everton fans, how would you describe your club?Â

Liverpool fans want to sign Hakim Ziyech after latest Ajax display

[ad_pod ]

Ajax attacker Hakim Ziyech scored his first Champions League goal in his side’s first leg last 16 defeat against Real Madrid in Amsterdam on Wednesday night, and his performance didn’t go unnoticed by Liverpool fans on Twitter.

The 25-year-old joined the Dutch giants in August 2016 and has made a huge impact for them, and he has scored 15 goals and provided a further 12 assists in 31 appearances in all competitions for them this term.

The Morocco international finally got off the mark in Europe’s elite club competition on Wednesday against the La Liga giants, and he probably should have had a brace given he missed a glorious opportunity earlier in the encounter.

Meanwhile, Liverpool sometimes seem to lack that creativity in the middle of the park when Jurgen Klopp lines up in a 4-3-3 formation with Philippe Coutinho still yet to be properly replaced, and the versatile Ziyech, who can play out wide or through the middle, certainly has the creative capability to play in a No.10 role for the Reds.

Supporters of the Merseyside outfit were quick to have their say on the African attacker’s latest performance via social media, and while one said “get him to Liverpool asap”, another said “Ziyech needs to be a red”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

West Brom fans react as Stoke prepare to give Saido Berahino the boot

[ad_pod ]

According to The Telegraph, Stoke are considering the possibility of cancelling Saido Berahino’s contract after the striker was, yet again, embroiled in a controversy external to the football pitch.

The number 9 was recently arrested on suspicion of drink driving and the Potters have not let him off the hook easy – he is now training on his own at Clayton Wood but it could be about to get a whole lot worse for the Englishman.

Having signed for the bet365 Stadium outfit for a whopping £12m in 2017, Berahino has been unable to focus on his football and has flopped pretty spectacularly. West Brom, meanwhile, have come out of the deal quite well and will be thanking their lucky stars that they offloaded him when they did.

Everton fans react to Davy Klaassen’s strike for Werder Bremen

[ad_pod ]

Davy Klaassen scored an absolute rocket for Werder Bremen in their 1-1 draw with Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Friday night.

Klaassen’s effort, which came just before the interval, ultimately earned his team a point and it was certainly some strike from the midfielder.

The Netherlands international has now scored three Bundesliga goals for Bremen this season, having arrived at the club from Everton last July.

Klaassen joined Everton in 2017 off the back of a 20-goal season with Ajax, but really struggled in England, failing to score in 16 appearances for the Toffees.

Now with Bremen, the 26-year-old appears to be enjoying his football once again.

A number of Everton fans took to social media to comment on the midfielder’s effort, with some lavishing praise on the club’s former player.

However, there were also others who insisted that the fanbase should not get carried away by what Klaassen did on Friday evening.

Liverpool fans will love what Paul Merson has said about Everton

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool visit Everton this weekend where they will be counting on putting on a far greater show than the one they did last time the two sides met – the Reds nicked the three points in the dying seconds of an otherwise uneventful clash.

Jurgen Klopp’s side battered Watford on Wednesday, and in respect of that result, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson feels there is little hope for their Merseyside neighbours.

What did he say?

Summarising his predictions for the weekend’s round of football, Merson said:

“Massive, massive game. Manchester City will have probably won and be top of the league, and with 10 to go, who plays first is a big mental advantage.

“If Liverpool win, they’re ticking off a big game. It’s out of Man City’s hands at the moment, but as soon as Liverpool do drop points I think they’re in trouble.

“Watford was a banana skin, it looked a hard game, and they come out with a 5-0 win. That gives them a massive boost.

“What threat do Everton have? Man-for-man, there is no threat, but it’s Everton’s cup final. Liverpool have to get through this unscathed.”

Toothless Toffees

The former midfielder thinks that the Reds quality will surely be too much for their hosts; rubbing salt in the Toffees’ wounds by stating that “there is no threat” to Liverpool, presumably if they muster a display of a similar standard to Wednesday night’s.

Marco Silva’s side dismantled Cardiff with relative ease on Tuesday, with Gylfi Sigurdsson back to his best but, on the red half of Merseyside, defensive behemoth Virgil van Dijk netted twice as well as producing yet another commanding defensive performance.

Who have been the biggest title race bottlers? Liverpool? Spurs? The Pl>ymaker FC squad discuss in the video below…

It will take something not far short of a miracle for the Goodison Park outfit to get a result against Liverpool if they are in sparkling form once again and the Anfield faithful will surely love hearing that Merson feels there is little chance for their bitter rivals to do any damage man-for-man.
