Newcastle United: Sean and Matty Longstaff contract stance have supporters questioning club transfer policy

According to an update by Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder, Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff could leave the club for as little as a £400,000 compensation fee to Europe if he does not sign a new deal – leaving some Magpies supporters to plead that they get the new contract signed.

The younger Longstaff brother, who was tipped to sign a new contract until they could not agree on terms, has been attracting interesting from Serie A table-toppers Inter Milan who have been keeping an eye on the deal dispute – with a number of clubs from Italy, Germany and Spain also interested (The Chronicle).

Longstaff, who has amassed an 80% pass accuracy in midfield this season over six league starts while scoring in each fixture against Premier League giants Man United, appears to have all the power when it comes to negotiation – with his older brother Sean’s new deal a lesser priority given he is tied down to the club until 2022. By comparison, the senior Longstaff doesn’t quite match his sibling’s pass success rate (78.1%) but does average more shots per game (0.9), as per WhoScored.com.

As a result, some Newcastle fans are desperate for the club to tie down these two local talents – with some taking swipes at the club overall – here’s what they had to say on Twitter surrounding the situation.

Sheffield Wednesday fans discuss Joey Pelupessy’s contract

Sheffield Wednesday fans would probably change a few things about the club at the moment.

A few members of the Hillsborough faithful have been very vocal about the fact they want Garry Monk out, but he’s not the only man they want to see depart.

Earlier this week Joey Pelupessy stated that he’d like to stay beyond his current contract, which expires this summer.

Of course, this led to some discussion as to whether or not the fans want the 26-year-old to remain a Wednesday player.

One influential account put the question to the supporters, and there were plenty of responses

Of course, some fans were keen to see the Dutchman leave.

Supporters have often been on the midfielder’s back, slating him multiple times this season.

If he did leave he wouldn’t be a huge miss starting just seven games all season for Garry Monk’s team.

Others stated that he could be handy if the club were relegated to League One.

A few of these comments were rather tongue-in-cheek, but with the Owls winning just one of their previous 11 games and potentially facing a hefty points deduction it’s not all that unrealistic to think that the Owls could be playing in the third tier next term.

In other news, Sheffield Wednesday fans have been drooling over one U23 player.

Arsenal’s Joe Willock deserves a chance to be Aaron Ramsey’s heir

Having impressed considerably when Unai Emery was still in charge at Arsenal, Joe Willock hasn’t had too much of a look-in under Mikel Arteta so far.

The academy starlet scored seven times in 23 games when Emery was the man in the dug-out, but has been restricted to just 56 minutes of Premier League football since the new man has come in on a permanent basis.

In a season that has been bitterly disappointing – the Gunners find themselves ten points off the top four – one factor for their downfall that hasn’t been talked about much, is the departure of Aaron Ramsey last summer.

The Wales international joined Serie A giants Juventus on a free transfer after reports claimed a contract offer from the Gunners was pulled from the negotiating table. Ramsey was arguably Mr Arsenal of the 2010s, symbolising all the good and the bad. He scored two FA Cup final winning goals, but was also slammed by pundits like Gary Neville for his performances.

What cannot be understated however, is that on his day, he could be a game-changing presence with his ability to score goals from midfield. Such a player is like gold-dust in the modern game, and Ramsey perfected that art. In his standout 2013/2014 campaign for the Gunners, the 29-year-old struck 16 times and provided a further ten assists in just 34 games across all competitions.

That eye for a goal is exactly what can be found in Willock’s game. Indeed, speaking after his goal against Standard Liege in the Europa League earlier this season, the 20-year-old remarked: “That’s one of my targets, to add goals into my game, so I am happy to have done that”.

Premier League experts will get full marks: The ultimate quiz on top flight transfer flops…

Whilst judging youth team stats aren’t always the greatest barometer of whether a player can succeed at the highest level, Willock’s record of seven goals and seven assists in 26 games in the Premier League 2 suggests he has this innate ability to find the back of the net from deeper in midfield.

The fact that the Gunners had the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner last season in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and yet still managed to finish even outside of the top four, speaks volumes of how critical is for them to find goal-scorers outside of their number 14.

Willock may still only be young at 20-years-old, but Arteta should give the 6 foot 1 powerhouse the chance to prove to him whether he can be the long-term answer to Ramsey’s exit and the lack of goals from midfield. Arsenal legend Ian Wright even called for him to be given more game-time, saying he’s someone who’s ready to make the step up. Now it’s up to the manager to show that same faith.

Meanwhile, John Cross has provided a major update on Arsenal’s summer transfer plans.

Liverpool fans slam Joe Gomez after West Ham scare

Liverpool came from behind to avoid a massive scare at Anfield as they secured all three points and continued their unbeaten run in the top-flight.

Jurgen Klopp’s men defeated West Ham United 3-2 to move to within just four wins of that elusive title with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane being the second-half saviours, although they can also thank visiting goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski for a pair of clangers.

After conceding two goals, fans weren’t best pleased with their defence and centre-back Joe Gomez, in particular, came in for some criticism on social media.

Here’s what has been said…

There were plenty of words used to describe his showing, including “shocking” and “poor” whilst one supporter brandished him as stupid for his role in the West Ham goals.

Another fan even pondered if the England international had even turned up for the game.

Per SofaScore, Gomez recorded three tackles but won just 50% of his aerial duels, which is why a further member of the Anfield faithful called him out on his poor ability in the air.

This was a recurring theme as others brought up Joel Matip’s name as at 6 foot 5, he wins plenty of his headers.

According to the supporter below, the 22-year-old tends to get bullied by opposition players.

Gomez was even called “overrated” by another fan and his performance was deemed so bad that one claimed to be missing Dejan Lovren…

Sunderland fans discuss Wyke as he is in the frame to return

Sunderland missed their main striker on Saturday but that was the least of their concerns as Kyle Lafferty scored twice in his place. Instead, it was in defence where the Black Cats faltered most with two goals conceded.Charlie Wyke was missing against Gillingham due to a problem with his back but he could be in contention to start against Bristol Rovers today, according to the club.Phil Parkinson could have a dilemma on his hands, therefore, as he had preferred Wyke over Lafferty in the ten matches between the latter joining in January and the game at the weekend.Supporters aren’t too keen on seeing the 27-year-old return, and given his lack of goals, with five in 26 league gamesÂthis term, it is easy to see why that sentiment exists.

The reaction from the fan above is harsh considering what Wyke offers outside of goalscoring.

He is a great physical presence for his teammates to hit in or around the penalty area, averaging 4.2 aerial duels won per game, and has brought the best out of 10-goal Lynden Gooch and Chris Maguire, who has achieved a WhoScored rating of 7.3 or above in his previous four matches.

That is why Parkinson may be tempted to recall him to the side, but since Lafferty proved more effective in front of goal, while also winning five aerial duels, it is probably right for him to retain his place in the team.

Although Wyke coming back into the fray disrupts things a little it should be greeted as a positive by both the fans and Parkinson, as in the first half of the season the Black Cats were dependent on Will Grigg or Marc McNulty to start up front for a time, and that pair managed a combined three goals in 34 league games.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Michael Owen, Garth Crooks or Mark Lawrenson?

Some supporters understand that the team is in a better place now, and the reactions below show a more positive mindset in regard to Wyke’s comeback.

Many supporters have also been busy discussing a player they were impressed with who could prove vital in the promotion run-in…

Liverpool fans discuss Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Liverpool may have won against AFC Bournemouth, but there will likely be mixed emotions among fans, due to a slightly underwhelming level of performance.

Discussions and disagreements will be had over certain players, and that has been the case with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The England international played 84 minutes before being substituted off for Adam Lallana, and the level of his performance has been debated.

There are plenty who have been left far from impressed, with one fan giving him a rating of four, while another described him as “the most annoying in that midfield”.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

This comes after he got no shots on target, won no aerial duels, didn’t manage a tackle and maintained a pass success rate of just 75%.

With that in mind, it is understandable that there are some supporters who were left underwhelmed.

However, there are some who were happy with the 26-year-old’s performance in the win over the Cherries.

This comes after the England international played one key pass and completed three dribbles, while making one clearance and two interceptions.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

One fan suggested he “deserves more respect”, while another felt that he “redeemed himself” in this game.

Meanwhile, one Liverpool youngster should have the club questioning their ambitious player pursuit.

Rangers: Fans choose Michael Mols’ injury as ‘sliding doors moment’

Rangers fans were voicing their opinion on what they thought was a huge ‘sliding doors moment’ and it’s fair to say, there was one which stood out among the many replies.

Journalist Jordan Campbell posed the question and according to some, the injury suffered by Michael Mols was a moment which ‘could have changed the course of football history’. The Dutch striker suffered a horrible knee issue after clashing with Bayern Munich ‘keeper Oliver Kahn during a Champions League game back in 1999. The striker had scored 13 times in his opening 20 games for the club before the unfortunate incident, highlighting why the fans picked him.

Overall, he scored 48 goals in 147 appearances across all competitions as he failed to fully recover from the setback (via Soccerbase). That said, he was still at the club throughout a hugely successful time and went on to win many trophies, including the domestic treble following the 2002/2003 campaign. Supporters were adamant his injury was a ‘sliding doors moment’ as they took to Twitter to react on what one called a ‘huge’ setback. Here are some tweets:

Liverpool: Pedro Chirivella departure could be a golden chance for Marko Grujic

The latest transfer reports surrounding Liverpool have claimed that Pedro Chirivella is likely to depart the club this summer.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the 22-year-old is likely to be out the door in the upcoming transfer window in tow of the likes of Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne.

Chirivella recently made a big impact in Liverpool’s FA Cup run as he captained a youth side fielded by Neil Critchley against Shrewsbury Town. The Spaniard led the young Reds to the fifth round of the competition but didn’t feature at all in the next stage as the senior team returned to the action.

Chirivella has played just 650 minutes in 11 first-team matches across all competitions since the 2015/16 season (via Transfermarkt). Now looks the right time for him to search for new pastures, given his lack of gametime.

In 2016, Chirivella signed a new contract with Liverpool after impressing during his time with the U23s. However, despite his fairly young age of 22, if Jurgen Klopp had big plans for the midfielder, he surely would have made them happen already.

Klopp infamously put Critchley in charge of Liverpool’s FA Cup replay at Anfield, with a youthful starting eleven. It seems Chirivella was given the captain’s armband as it was the most logical decision, not because he was a standout candidate. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looking fit and firing and Georginio Wijnaldum rumoured to be signing a new contract, Liverpool’s midfield has no room for players that aren’t top-tier proven.

Even Marko Grujic – whose future is currently a grey area – would likely be higher on the pecking order when he returns from loan. The 23-year-old has tallied three goals and two assists for Hertha Berlin so far this season (via Transfermarkt). After all, former manager Pal Dardai recently said Grujic is ‘by far the best midfielder’ he had seen in his 22 years at the club (via Bundesliga). With plenty of top level experience now under the Serb’s belt, the space opened up by Chirivella’s exit would surely afford him a proper chance at Anfield.

Against Shrewsbury at Anfield, Chirivella lost possession 15 times, more than 18-year-old Leighton Clarkson (8). The teenager also made more tackles (3) than the Spaniard, who didn’t make any successful challenges (via Sofascore). As Liverpool have developed, the Spaniard has sadly been left in the dust and an unfulfilled career will be on the cards unless he takes control of his career now, vacating the spot for Gruijc.

What’s your take, Liverpool fans? Is it time for Pedro Chirivella to leave the club, or is he on track for first team action?

Mick McCarthy’s £1.5m masterstroke in 2008

Back in the days when Mick McCarthy was manager and Jez Moxey was Chief Executive, Wolves laid £1.5m on the table to sign Sylvan Ebanks-Blake from Plymouth Argyle in January 2008.

The Cambridge-born striker had netted 11 Championship goals for Plymouth in the first half of that campaign before making the switch to Molineux, where he rewarded Wolves’ faith in him by smashing home 12 goals in just 20 appearances.

As far as first impressions go, Ebanks-Blake didn’t make a bad one.

In the next campaign – his first full season as a Wolves player – things got even better for the attacker.

Ebanks-Blake netted 24 Championship goals to fire the Midlands-based club back into the Premier League, finishing as the division’s top scorer for the second season running – all while making that £1.5m transfer fee look like a bargain.

The 1-cap England U21 international stayed with Wolves until the summer of 2013, by which time he had added to his excellent Championship tally for the club with 10 Premier League goals and 13 more in the Championship following relegation under Terry Connor.

In total, Ebanks-Blake scored 62 goals in 193 appearances for Wolves, meaning that the signing by McCarthy and Moxey cost the club £24.19k per goal – he was an astoundingly good value-for-money purchase.

If you were to take inflation into account using the Bank of England’s inflation calculator, you would discover that Ebanks-Blake’s fee from 2008 would be worth £2,016,460.18 in today’s money, which is still a bargain given his accomplishments.

He ended his Wolves career with a Championship title and two Championship Golden Boot awards under his belt, before leaving for Ipswich.

For true Wolves fans only: How much did each of these players cost?

He may not have carried his fine goalscoring form into the Premier League as some may have expected him to, but he still turned out to be a fine purchase for Wolves in a financial sense – fair play to McCarthy and Moxey.

In other news, this Kenny Jackett signing worth just £9.96k per game has become the pillar of Wolves…

Rangers fans react to boardroom links with Graeme Souness

Loads of Rangers fans have been reacting to some rumours linking them with club legend Graeme Souness, as reports have confirmed the 66 year-old could return to the club as a director.

The Gers faithful said goodbye to Dave King this weekend, with fans hailing the outgoing chairman for “saving” the club from the clutches of Mike Ashley. Douglas Park will replace King in an interim capacity, the club announced, but there could also be another addition behind the scenes.

Watch Rangers Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

As reported by The Scotsman, Souness has confirmed his interest in taking up an “advisory role”, and the former Light Blues skipper and manager has actually occupied a similar role before, securing 10% of David Murray’s shares in 1988. This puts him in the unique position of having played, managed and served as a director for the club.

“Rangers are the biggest club in Britain as far as I’m concerned and I can go no higher in my career,” he said at the time. “I am proud to be manager of Rangers and being a director is an even greater privilege.”

Who said it: Klopp or Thanos?
