Sunderland reminisce about awful Mika signing

Loads of Sunderland fans have been reacting to a rather hilarious anniversary, as Friday marks two years since the Black Cats signed goalkeeper Mika.

It’s fair to say a lot has gone wrong at the Stadium of Light over the last few years, but above all else it’s the awful transfer business that really drove the Black Cats down.

Time and time again under Ellis Short the club signed unknown players from poor teams for ridiculous fees, and fans are reminiscing about the capture of Mika.

The former Portugal Under-21 goalkeeper was signed by David Moyes in 2016 for around £2m.

While £2m isn’t exactly a crazy fee, it becomes slightly crazier when you realise the 27 year-old never played a league game for the club, and left two years later after agreeing to terminate his contract.

He is now playing his football for Portuguese side Belenenses, though “playing” is a bit of a stretch as he hasn’t actually played for them yet.

Fans are hopeful those days are behind them now, as the new leadership looks to rebuild the squad with smarter investments, but they can’t help looking back on the infamous signing.

Arsenal fans agree with Emery that Monreal needs new deal

Arsenal have struggled to find their feet under the guidance of Unai Emery but improvements were shown prior to the international break following back-to-back wins over West Ham and Cardiff.

The Gunners are seeking a third consecutive win on Saturday when they travel to Newcastle but, amidst their on-field antics, have uncertainty surrounding a number of players – including Aaron Ramsey and Nacho Monreal.

Both players have entered the final 12 months of their deal and, while Ramsey has attracted the most gossip, Monreal has been praised by Emery this week ahead of the trip to Tyneside as the boss urged for him to be handed a new deal.

Signed in 2013 from Malaga, 32-year-old Monreal has been a regular for Arsenal in the past five years and has featured in each of the last three Premier League matches, scoring once.

Arsenal fans had their say on the matter on Twitter, where the majority agreed that the club need to hand extended terms to the Spain international. We have gathered some of the best reactions below.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek beyond perfect for struggling Southampton

Southampton fans will be eager to avoid another relegation dogfight in the Premier League this season.

Mark Hughes was given the permanent job at St. Marys after saving the club from relegation on the final day of the season. The Saints added to their squad during the summer transfer window, and Danny Ings looks to be the striker that they have been crying out for. The former Liverpool forward has already netted twice at his new employers and will be hoping to continue his form when he returns to action.

Although the transfer window is closed, Southampton need to be keeping tabs on potential recruits when business resumes in January. If the Saints find themselves in danger, they need to act quickly to sign the right players to lift them out of trouble. A perfect January addition could be Chelsea outcast – Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the England international spent last season on loan with Crystal Palace. His impressive showings for the Eagles earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad. Another great showing in Russia seemingly handed Loftus-Cheek the opportunity to gain a spot in the Chelsea starting eleven.

However, the 22-year-old has played just 33 minutes in the Premier League this season following the arrival of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic at Stamford Bridge. It appears the youngster is not in Sarri’s plans and he needs to seriously consider leaving the club on loan in order to aid his development. Southampton should aim to be first in line for his services.

A strong, powerful midfielder, Loftus-Cheek was key to Roy Hodgson improving Crystal Palace’s fortunes last season. The Englishman would have a point to prove and will desperate to make a name for himself in the Premier League.

Competition will be fierce, so the Saints must ensure they do everything in their power to bring him to St. Marys.

West Ham smashed their way past Macclesfield Town on Wednesday evening, securing an 8-0 win to put their name amongst Saturday’s fourth-round draw.

The victory was the Hammers’ largest since 1983 and extends an impressive run of form under Manuel Pellegrini to three matches unbeaten in all competitions, following the victory over Everton and the goalless draw with Chelsea.

Pellegrini named a strong side for the hosting of the League Two minnows but also handed an opportunity to 20-year-old winger Grady Diangana, who took his chance with both hands after scoring a brace on his senior debut.

The winger faces a wealth of competition in the battle to earn regular first-team football with the East London side, who also boast the likes of Robert Snodgrass, Michail Antonio, Andriy Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson in their ranks, but fans were impressed by the youngster’s performance.

We have gathered some of the best reactions to Diangana’s display below.

Revealed: 83% of Arsenal fans want Aaron Ramsey to be sold

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal have turned a corner under the guidance of Unai Emery and now boast seven consecutive victories across all competitions, having swept to a 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

The Gunners have pushed backed into the race for a top-four finish after a slow start to the season saw the North London outfit suffer consecutive defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea, but Emery’s side are now showing consistency.

However, there is still uncertainty around many aspects of the Spaniard’s squad at the Emirates Stadium and a huge departure looks set to be on the horizon after Arsenal pulled out of renewal talks with Aaron Ramsey.

That means the Wales international could leave for nothing next summer and, as a result, we asked fans whether they believe Arsenal should push to offload the former Cardiff City man in January in order to receive a fee.

A large majority of 83% of polled supporters stated they would like to see Arsenal offload the 27-year-old when the window reopens, while just 17% want the long-serving Gunner to remain until the end of the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp provides update on Lallana ahead of Manchester City clash, Liverpool fans react

[ad_pod ]

Adam Lallana was once a regular in the Liverpool lineup but following a bout of injuries, the midfielder has dropped down the pecking order.

The 30-year-old missed the majority of last season due to injury and he has only featured once this season.

His outing lasted just three minutes as it was a very brief cameo during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace in August.

Lallana was named on the bench for the Reds’ first four Premier League matches, but since then he has been nursing a groin injury.

Now, though, it appears that the midfielder is ready to return to action as manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed in his press conference that the England international is back in full training.

The German coach also did not rule him out of Sunday’s huge league showdown against Manchester City at Anfield.

Liverpool will aim to bounce back this weekend following a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League in midweek.

If they are to get a result against the reigning English champions then they need to have their best team ready.

Some fans do not believe that Lallana is the right man to throw into the action, while a few are happy to see him back.

Revealed: 62% of West Brom fans wouldn’t support move for free-agent Papy Djilobodji

The majority of West Brom fans that answered our recent poll said that they wouldn’t support a move for free-agent Papy Djilobodji, who was recently sacked by Sunderland for failing to report back for pre-season training.

The Baggies have begun the season brilliantly under Darren Moore, who was given the manager’s job on a permanent basis in the summer. They now sit second in the table behind Sheffield United and their attacking front-three of Dwight Gayle, Jay Rodriguez and Harvey Barnes have been on fire.

The West Midlands side have scored an incredible 31 goals in the league – nine more than the next top scorers Middlesbrough.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”305269″ player=”12034″ title=”Are Emery’s Arsenal Silently Gunning For The Title”]

However, at the back West Brom have been more suspect and signing Djilobodji could help bolster their options at the centre of defence, especially given that the Baggies boss prefers a 3-4-1-2 formation that Ahmed Hegazi and Kyle Bartley have struggled to adapt to.

Everton fans react as Rooney hits out at Allardyce

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Everton fans have been discussing some comments from Wayne Rooney, as the DC United star blamed Sam Allardyce for his decline at Everton.

Rooney had an excellent start to his second spell on Merseyside, scoring 11 times before the end of 2017.

The former Toffee completely lost his mojo in 2018 though, and a drop in form resulted in a change in position for the 32 year-old.

Allardyce moved the striker back into midfield, where he was able to use his technical quality and vision without having to worry about his lack of pace.

He didn’t score a single goal for Everton in 2018 though, and his latest comments suggest he believes he was hard done by.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”308991″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Fixture in Focus West Ham v Tottenham”]

“It became more apparent that the team would play better, move forward and win more games with me playing in midfield,” he said.

“Doing what I’ve done most of my career and putting the team first I went back into midfield but I believe if I’d stayed as a striker I probably would have reached the 20 goal mark and all of a sudden people would talk differently.

“I enjoyed my time there. I would obviously liked it to have lasted a bit longer and the club on their own made decisions which was a bit difficult to take.”

While he may feel unlucky to have been shipped off to the MLS he is certainly enjoying his time in a weaker league, grabbing ten goals and six assists in 18 appearances.

Fans are split on the comments, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Lawwell must be weighing up a move for 1 of these 2 managers after Euro horror

Last season Brendan Rodgers won the Double Treble to continue Celtic’s dominance north of the border but this season, the Celtic boss hasn’t had the best year so far.

Hearts currently lead the league and with an improved Rangers side and the surprise package of Kilmarnock, the Scottish Premiership is probably the most competitive it’s been in quite some time.

After a summer where the club lost its best player in Moussa Dembele, Brendan Rodgers is now under serious pressure to deliver this season and win Celtic’s 10th successive league title.

However, it seems the former Liverpool boss is already preparing for his exit. Rodgers has already complained about the club’s lack of transfer activity over the summer and even threatened to leave the club if they don’t match his ambitions.

After yet another poor loss in Europe on Thursday night, chief executive Peter Lawwell must surely be considering replacing the manager in the near future.

The Breakdown

While it may seem like an impossible act to follow after such a period of success, the Celtic job is still an incredibly desirable one for any manager.

Following his dismissal from Aston Villa, Steve Bruce could well be on the list of candidates to make the move up north. While some may point to the manager’s poor final season with Villa, overall he did fairly well at the club and was unlucky not to get the side promoted last season.

The second man who could be on his way to Glasgow, is former Leeds manager Paul Heckingbottom.

Widely regarded as one of the best managerial talents in England, the former Barnsley man didn’t have the best of times at Leeds and doesn’t have a wealth of experience in management but he could well be the new age boss to take the side to new heights.

Tottenham must secure Dembele’s successor by signing Ndombele

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham are desperate for some fresh blood in the middle of the park, and Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has shown once again why he is the perfect fit.

Tottenham were heavily linked with a move for Ndombele this summer, as the North Londoners are set to lose at least one central midfielder next summer.

Mousa Dembele is not expected to renew his current deal, which expires at the end of this season, while Victor Wanyama could potentially leave in search of regular playing time.

Ndombele could be the perfect replacement for Dembele, as he brings everything that the Belgian does and so much more.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”310054″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Fake Madrid & Ross Barkley Emulates… David Ngog”]

Both players love using their wiry strength and close control to dribble out of tight areas, but Ndombele is a far superior passer once completing his move with the ball.

His skills were on full show as Lyon drew 3-3 with Hoffenheim in the Champions League on Tusday night, as he completed five dribbles and made three superb key passes.

He also got himself on the scoresheet, levelling the score at 2-2 around the hour mark.

The 21 year-old made one tackle, one interception, one clearances and one block, in one of the most well-rounded performances of the group stages so far.

This ability to influence the game at both ends of the pitch will certainly appeal to Mauricio Pochettino, and he could be the absolute perfect replacement for fan favourite Dembele.

So, Tottenham fans, is Ndombele still the man you want in midfield? Who else has impressed you in the Champions League? Let us know your thought by voting in the poll below…
