Sky Sports: Slot wants to sign £50m Nunez & Isak hybrid at Liverpool

At the start of the season, Arne Slot faced a few questions regarding his true tactical integrity and how much of Liverpool’s rip-roaring start was a product of Jurgen Klopp’s legacy.

For sure, some claimed the Dutchman was riding on his predecessor’s coattails, but such arguments have been reduced to flaking, brittle deadwood as Liverpool enter the new year confidently atop the Premier League and Champions League tables.

Liverpool players celebrate

Klopp’s residual ferocity, his counter-pressing snap, can be found in this current Liverpool team. It’s like one of those lenticular paintings that shift when moving to different perspectives.

Optical illusions on the pitch can give the appearance of Klopp’s system, but make no mistake, Slot is very much his own man. He has willed and shaped the Anfield side into his own design despite the weight of the task and the bereftness of activity during the summer transfer window.

Sidenote: See the table above; Liverpool are more relaxed in their build-up, less frenetic and energetic. However, they are scoring more and conceding less. This is the marker of Slot’s genius, calming things down through phases while ensuring that his side retain the ability to ramp it up to the nth degree when the situation demands.

Federico Chiesa was snapped up for an eye-catching £12.5m but has only featured four times as he battles injuries. With Darwin Nunez’s future somewhat unclear too, FSG could authorise a statement signing this year – and perhaps even this month.

Liverpool eyeing new forward

As per Sky Sports, Liverpool have shortlisted Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo and may move to sign him this year. While the door is not closed on January spending, resolving Anfield’s contractual concerns is the pressing issue.

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo

Mbeumo’s a prized signature after his prolific performances in the Premier League this term, with reliable reports suggesting that Newcastle United are also in the race and willing to pay £50m this month, though they are wary of PSR restrictions.

Liverpool boast the world’s best right winger in Mohamed Salah but with Chiesa homesick, peripheral and looking for a way out, this could be the perfect move to bolster Slot’s thriving frontline.

Bryan Mbeumo's season in numbers

Mbeumo has been a part of Brentford’s remarkable journey under Thomas Frank’s management, notching 105 goal contributions over 222 appearances.

Bryan Mbeumo celebrates for Brentford

Joining from Troyes in French Ligue 2 in 2019, Mbeumo has achieved modern-legend status in west London and, still only 24 years old, will feel that his best days lie ahead.

And rightly so. Regarded as one of the Premier League’s most exciting forwards, his goal against Arsenal on New Year’s Day was his 45th since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, placing him seventh in the division since that timeframe, directly behind Alexander Isak.

He’s always there, hunting down goals, but he’s not just a marksman. As per FBref, Mbeumo actually ranks among the top 9% of positional peers in the Premier League this season for shot-creating actions and progressive passes, the top 12% for progressive carries and successful take-ons and the top 14% for tackles per 90. He’s the complete package.

In fact, such metrics have seen him compared to players such as Isak and Nunez, among forwards in his position across Europe’s top five leagues. The Liverpool striker has his faults, to be sure, but he’s still imbued with a kind of electricity and chaoticness that convinced Liverpool to pay for his services.

And Isak. Well. Wouldn’t Liverpool like to sign the kind of forward who could replicate some of the Newcastle man’s quality?

A Darwin Nunez & Alexander Isak hybrid

Imagine a player carrying properties distinctive to both Nunez and Isak. Imagine the kind of player you’d get. Mbeumo could be that type of striker for Liverpool, one who can shift between number nine and the flank.

It could be an irresistible recipe for success. After all, Slot has demonstrated through Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz that he is willing to field wide players in central striking roles to great effect.

For example, Mbeumo has scored 20 Premier League goals since the summer of 2023, missing only 14 big chances in that timeframe, as per Sofascore.

Isak, one of the deadliest finishers on the continent, has missed 30 big chances since 2023/24, albeit scoring 33 goals since. Nunez represents the converse, having scored just 13 Premier League goals in the discussed timeframe, missing, however, 30 big chances, embarrassingly matching Isak.

It’s grim reading for Nunez acolytes, albeit they can take solace in the fact that Liverpool’s agent of chaos is a thorny customer, using his athletic style and dynamism to help his team toward their goal.

He ranks among the top 14% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries and the top 3% for tackles per 90, which is impressive, but we can see that Mbeumo would implement a tactical strategy that could negate Nunez’s role, his expertise while bringing a whole new cutting edge to complement the likes of Salah and Cody Gakpo.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

While Mbeumo wouldn’t provide Liverpool with the ball-striking ability of Isak, they could mimic it in their own form. This is enough. More than enough. Liverpool perhaps boast the finest frontline in the country under Slot, and Mbeumo, described as an “output machine” by producer Michael Johnston, would make it even better. It’s as simple as that.

Eddie Byrom-Colin Ingram 328-stand gives Glamorgan a chance

Four quick wickets before lunch brought Sussex back into the contest

Sussex 376 and 86 for 2 (Clark 32*, Carter 22*) trail Glamorgan 494 (Ingram 178, Byrom 176) trail by 32 runsDespite a flurry of early morning wickets pegging them back, Glamorgan have finished the third day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Sussex with a chance to push for victory. The day started with Eddie Byrom and Colin Ingram taking their outstanding partnership past 300 before four quick wickets before lunch brought Sussex back into the contest.Glamorgan’s lower order took their score to 494, a first-innings lead of 118, with Byrom making a career-best 176 and Ingram dismissed for 178.Two early wickets, and Ingram picking up a third from the last ball of the day, has left Sussex with work to do to save this game, still 29 runs behind Glamorgan going into the final day.Having resumed with their partnership on 253, Ingram and Byrom took their stand to 328, the highest ever stand for the second wicket for Glamorgan, going past the 291 put on by Nick Selman and Marnus Labuschagne against the same opposition in 2019.It was a pretty miserable first 90 minutes of the day for Sussex with wicket-keeper Tim Seifert dropping a simple chance to dismiss Byrom for 126 being the lowlight, but the cluster of wickets before the lunch interval brought them back into the game.It was Ingram’s wicket which ended the partnership with Byrom, Henry Crocombe the bowler to make the breakthrough. Ingram’s attempted pull shot caught was at mid-wicket with Tom Alsop the fielder.Having waited so long for a second wicket Sussex had Glamorgan five down in quick time. Sam Northeast was bowled first ball with a lovely yorker as two wickets fell in as many balls. It was Crocombe who also got the fourth Glamorgan wicket with Kiran Carlson given out caught behind. Crocombe would go on to claim a career-best 4 for 84 in the Glamorgan first innings. When Sean Hunt trapped Billy Root lbw for 5 Glamorgan had lost four wickets in the space of 17 runs and were still 28 runs behind the Sussex innings. The sixth Glamorgan wicket fell with Sussex still four runs in front, Hunt bowling James Weighell for 16 and the home side were in danger of squandering the fantastic position they found themselves in overnight. Some excellent lower-order contributions took them to a lead of 118, one that could be telling at the end of this game.Byrom was dismissed just after Glamorgan had claimed maximum batting points but Michael Neser and Andrew Salter hung around with Chris Cooke who was batting at 10 with a runner due to the calf injury he sustained on the first day.The evening session saw Sussex attempting to erase the first-innings deficit on a pitch that had the odd ball keeping low. Sussex lost both openers early on to add more pressure, Alsop and Tom Haines both falling with the score on 29.First-innings centurion, Oli Carter was at the crease at the close but Tom Clark failed to keep out a ball from Ingram that trickled into his stumps to have him bowled for 34 by the last ball of the day.The draw is still the favourite result, but a Glamorgan victory is the close second.

Celtic considering bid to sign versatile attacker for Rodgers in £8.5m deal

Brendan Rodgers is keen to add to his attacking options this month, and Celtic have turned their attentions to a versatile goalscoring winger, according to a new report.

Celtic transfer news

The Scottish champions are yet to complete any transfer business this month, but that doesn’t mean they are not going to do so. Rodgers will want to add to his squad even though they look on course to win the Scottish Premiership and have a good chance of reaching the Champions League knockout stages.

Celtic make enquiry to sign exciting star who could be their next Tim Weah

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is seeking to improve his squad in January, so could a 21-year-old star be arriving in Glasgow on loan this month?

ByBen Gray Jan 16, 2025

One player who is on Celtic’s radar is former defender Kieran Tierney. The left-back currently plays for Arsenal but has lost his place in the side in recent times, and the Hoops are now working on a deal to bring him back to Parkhead. Sky Sports are claiming that Celtic are close to agreeing pre-contract terms with Tierney, as he is a free agent in six months, and once that is completed, they are going to explore taking the player on loan for the remainder of the season.

As well as Tierney possibly arriving this month, Celtic may also look to bring striker Mateusz Bogusz to the club. The LAFC forward was of interest to the Hoops in the summer, as they were in talks over a possible deal, but a deal couldn’t get over the line. The 23-year-old netted 16 goals in the MLS last season and has remained of interest to the Hoops.

Celtic considering bid for versatile attacker in £8.5m deal

Bogusz is not the only attacking player on the Hoops’ radar, as The Daily Mail reports that Celtic are weighing up an offer for Real Valladolid’s winger Raul Moro.

Raul Moro

Given Valladolid’s position in La Liga’s relegation zone, Moro is expected to leave the Spanish side this month to help them improve other areas of the team. Celtic are yet to make an offer for Moro, but Valladolid are aware of their interest, and the Spanish side are asking for £8.5 million, which would make him the Hoops’ fourth biggest ever outlay.

Moro’s football career has seen him play in Spain and Italy, having a short spell at Barcelona’s academy during the early days of his career. The 22-year-old is a very exciting winger who can play on both the right and left sides of the attack as well as play behind the striker, which is surely one reason why he is of interest to Rodgers.

Celtic are in the market for at least one new attacker, and to bring in someone like Moro, who can play in multiple positions, would be a huge boost. The Spanish under-21 international has yet to show he is consistent in front of goal, but he has chipped in throughout this campaign and has an eye for creating chances for his teammates.

Simon Harmer spins Gloucestershire to the brink after Alastair Cook century

Ten wickets in the match leave visitors four wickets from defeat at close

Gloucestershire 136 and 140 for 6 (Harmer 5-51) trail Essex 310 (Cook 145, Westley 90, Gohar 5-84) by 34 runsAlastair Cook and Simon Harmer combined to leave Essex on the cusp of victory in their LV=County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Chelmsford.Cook recorded his 31st first-class century for his county on his way to 145 out of 310 all out before off-spinner Harmer bagged 5 for 51 wickets as the visitors capitulated against the spin wizard.Cook occupied the crease for almost seven hours as Essex and with skipper Tom Westley, who scored 90, provided a significant second-wicket partnership worth 196.Trailing by 174 runs on first innings, Gloucestershire were flummoxed and confused by the wily Harmer who was introduced into the attack for the 6th over and by the close, had tantalised the visitors to the brink of defeat.Ollie Price reached the close unbeaten on 42 and will resume with Zafar Gohar on 10 but winless Gloucestershire look set for another reverse.Harmer’s first victim came in his third over when Marcus Harris was bowled and four balls later, he had Ryan Higgins picked up at bat/pad for a duck to leave the visitors 26 for 2Although Chris Dent batted resolutely, he saw Miles Hammond and James Bracey fall to Harmer. Hammond bowled when he injudiciously went on the back foot before James Bracey reached forward and was stumped. Then Dent himself fell to Harmer for 33 out of 77 for 5, leg before on the back pad to give Harmer his tenth wicket of the match.Cook and skipper Westley had made serene progress during the morning session when they resumed on the overnight 127 for 1, just 9 runs adrift of their opponents. With the 15th delivery of the day, a boundary by Westley moved Essex into credit and he and Cook increased the advantage with a series of nicely-timed and well-directed drives.Westley’s penchant for an array of leg side strokes complemented the classic cover driving and square cuts executed by Cook as the partnership flourished. There was a rare moment of anxiety though for Cook when he had scored 71 following the introduction of slow bowler Miles Hammond, the eighth bowler used by the visitors.Hammond’s first delivery found the edge as Cook played forward but the ball escaped the clutches of Higgins at first slip to allow the Essex Knight of the Realm to continue to showcase his talent to his Chelmsford kingdom.Gloucestershire were finally able to bring about a conclusion to the Cook-Westley alliance when Westley’s defence was breached by a beautiful delivery from Tom Price that nipped back to re-arrange off stump.Cook arrived at three figures with his 12th boundary having faced 236 deliveries steering the ball backward of square on the off to earn a standing ovation from the crowd.Shortly after the impressive Price struck again. Dan Lawrence was caught at short mid-wicket off an intended pull to give the paceman figures of 3 for 47 as Essex arrived at lunch on 222 for 3 at lunch and a lead of 86 runs.Cook continued relentlessly but at the opposite end, his colleagues were being undone by left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar. He enjoyed a spell of 3 for 7 before Ryan Higgins tempted Cook to nibble outside off stump to be caught behind.Adam Rossington clubbed a couple of sixes to book a third batting point before Zafar added two more wickets to return figures of 5 for 84 and his fourth five-wicket haul for his county.

Pant and Jadeja go full amazeballs to rescue India against England

Wicketkeeper hits 146, allrounder unbeaten on 83 after coming together at 98 for 5

Karthik Krishnaswamy01-Jul-20223:11

Can we compare Pant to Gilchrist in Test cricket already?

Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell may have left the UK, but the narrative arc they established during New Zealand’s just-concluded Test tour continues to define the 2022 English summer. From the despair of 98 for 5, India roared back through the sixth-wicket heroics of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja, who put on 222 off just 239 balls. On a rain-interrupted day in which only 73 overs were possible, India galloped to 338 for 7 at the rate of 4.63 per over. Bazball? Well, Rishabh Pant was doing it long before the term was coined, and he moves to no one else’s rhythm but his own. He scored his fifth Test hundred and his second in England, a breathtaking 146 off just 111 balls.Jadeja, meanwhile, began his innings with India in considerable strife and calmed the dressing room down with an innings of crisp driving and discipline outside off stump. At close of play, he was still batting on 83.Seven overs remain before the second new ball is due, and while India’s first-innings total is already well within the realms of respectability, it is by no means a safe one. Their hopes of getting to 375 or beyond rest with Jadeja, and how much support he can get from their brittle bottom three. All through this summer, the Dukes ball has softened after the 30-over mark or thereabouts and become far less of a threat to batters. This was certainly a contributor to India’s fightback, but another possible factor – and a far more worrying one for the home team – may have been England’s lack of bowling depth, and their over-reliance on the ageless and peerless James Anderson. With a two-hour rain break – which included the 40 minutes of an early lunch – allowing him to rest his legs when the ball was still new, Anderson bowled 15 of the first 35 overs of the day. But he only bowled four of the last 38 overs, a time when England could have done with their other bowlers stepping up.2:15

Giles on Anderson: ‘He’s a genius, still a pleasure to watch him operate’

Instead, England’s third and fourth specialist bowlers conceded 156 runs in just 26 overs. While Matthew Potts’ day unraveled after an encouraging start – he took the wickets of Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli – Jack Leach had an entirely forgettable time of it, as Pant – by no means for the first time – toyed mercilessly with him.Pant took 59 runs off Leach, off just 32 balls, and 46 of these runs came through the leg side despite the left-arm spinner bowling with six fielders on that side of the wicket, including three protecting the boundary. He launched the ball thrillingly down the ground, as you might expect, but the highlight of Pant’s takedown of Leach was probably the way he manipulated his quicker, flatter change-ups by sinking halfway onto his back knee and sweeping, swiping or swatting him either side of deep backward square leg. He was quite likely lbw if he missed, but at no time did he seem remotely likely to miss.Pant got through almost his entire repertoire of shots against both spin and pace – there was a not-quite-middled repeat of his reverse-scoop over the slips off Anderson, for instance, and a straight hit off Leach that ended with batter lying flat on his back – but the most brilliant bits of his strokeplay were from the more textbook end of the spectrum, none better than a pair of scorching back-foot punches off Potts. These two shots came during a passage of play immediately after tea when India wrested the momentum entirely away from England, with Potts conceding 37 runs in a five-over spell, only to give way to the even more expensive Leach, who eventually ended the day nursing figures of 9-0-71-0. At the other end, Anderson and then Stuart Broad could only apply so much salve.Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja embrace after the former reached his fifth Test ton•Getty Images

Eventually it was Joe Root who dismissed Pant, finding the edge with a clever change of pace immediately after being hit for a straight six. Ben Stokes dismissed Shardul Thakur soon after with a sharp bouncer, giving England a welcome sight of India’s tail after being under the pump for so long.England couldn’t have envisaged the day ending in that manner given how it had begun. Overhead conditions – and the afterglow of their back-to-back-to-back successful run-chases against New Zealand – prompted Stokes to bowl first, and Anderson justified that choice by dismissing both openers.Shubman Gill got going with three sweetly timed early boundaries, but always seemed a little vulnerable to feeling for the ball outside off stump. He survived two edges that fell short of the cordon, but had no such luck on 17, when he pushed away from his body at a ball from Anderson that straightened from just short of a length.Cheteshwar Pujara, back in the Test XI but opening rather than batting at No. 3, made a typically solid start against testing bowling, but having seen off 45 balls, he got a peach from Anderson that he could do little about: an outswinger angling into the stumps initially before curving away late with extra bounce. At second slip, Zak Crawley, who had just put down Vihari off Potts, held on to this far simpler chance that came straight to him off the shoulder of Pujara’s bat. Then, after the two-hour weather interruption, Potts got two wickets in two overs, trapping Vihari plumb with a nip-backer before having Kohli bowled off his inside edge when he was caught in two minds between playing and leaving.India were in intense strife at 71 for 4, and it only deepened after a short, stroke-filled and ultimately unconvincing innings from Shreyas Iyer, when Anderson aimed at his ribcage and got him to glove down the leg side. The efforts of Mitchell and Blundell may have cautioned England against celebrating too much at this point, but surely even they couldn’t see the same thing happening all over again?

Man Utd scout spotted watching 24 y/o whose club is on brink of PSR breach

A Manchester United scout has been spotted watching a 24-year-old goalkeeper whose club is on the brink of a PSR breach in the coming days, according to a recent report.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils will have to remain patient when it comes to this January transfer window, as any business they conduct will likely come towards the latter end of the month as players need to be moved on before any new ones can arrive.

Man Utd make enquiry for £33m Asian star as possible Rashford replacement

Man United and Ruben Amorim have their eyes on a Ligue 1 attacker.

ByBrett Worthington Jan 9, 2025

But that hasn’t stopped United from looking at potential players who they would like to sign this month. It was reported last week that United had sent scouts to watch striker Samu Omorodion in action for Porto the previous weekend. The forward will be well known to Ruben Amorim as he came up against the forward a few times during his time at Sporting. Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic is another player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the last week or so.

Juventus'DusanVlahovicin action with Lazio's Patric

However, the Serbia’s arrival appears to depend on what happens to Joshua Zirkzee, as the Dutchman will need to go in the opposite direction for Vlahovic to join United. Reports have even gone on to state that the Italian side have made an official cash-plus-player offer, and both Vlahovic and Zirkzee are open to moves this month.

Meanwhile, United are continuing to look for a new left wingback, and according to Fabrizio Romano, they have placed Patrick Dorgu on their transfer wishlist. He now joins Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and PSG’s Nuno Mendes on the list, but those two are considered more expensive than Dorgu.

Man Utd scout spotted watching 24-year-old Leicester player

A new striker and left wingback are not all that United are looking at. According to The Telegraph, relayed by Leicestershire Live, Manchester United have sent a scout to watch Leicester City’s Mads Hermansen this season and could look to capitalise on the Foxes’ PSR breach.

In recent days, it has been reported that Celtic are closing in on the signing of Altay Bayindir, and therefore, the Red Devils could be in the market for a new goalkeeper to provide competition to Andre Onana. Hermansen, who joined the Foxes in July 2023, has now emerged on the club’s radar.

Hermansen had never played outside of Denmark before moving to Leicester, as he came through the academy at Naesby BK youth and then moved to Brondby IF. The 24-year-old was brought to the King Power Stadium by former manager Enzo Maresca, and he was vital in their promotion from the Championship, as he started 44 league games and kept 13 clean sheets.

Leicester currently face uncertainty when it comes to complying with PSR, and they are expected to find out if they have fallen on the right side of the rules next Tuesday.

But given the uncertainty, United have sent goalkeeper scout Tony Coton to watch Hermansen in action for the Foxes in their 2-2 draw with Brighton this season. The Red Devils are aware of his “potential availability” as the goalkeeper is Leicester’s most “likely sale” if they have failed to comply with PSR.
