Ben Sanderson, Gareth Berg share 19 wickets as Northamptonshire thrash Sussex

Sanderson claims 10 for the match and Berg nine as Northants win by an innings and 120 runs

Ben Sanderson and Gareth Berg shared 19 wickets in the match as Northamptonshire quashed Sussex by an innings and 120 runs in the LV= Insurance County Championship. The fast-bowling duo returned match figures of 19 for 189 – with fellow seamer Tom Taylor thwarting the chance for a clean sweep with the victory-confirming scalp.Veteran Berg, 40, claimed career-best figures of 9 for 90, while Sanderson celebrated 10 for 99, with five-wicket hauls in both innings.Northants, who atoned for their heart-breaking one-run defeat to Yorkshire a week ago, moved to their second victory of the season to keep their Division One hopes alive – taking 24 points to Sussex’s three. After the third day had been washed out at Wantage Road, Northants needed six wickets to secure back-to-back home wins in the Championship – with humid air and grey skies handing them perfect conditions.Sanderson, who had shared 10 for 46 with Berg in the first innings, didn’t need a loosener as he struck with his first ball of the morning.Stiaan van Zyl had been at ease for his 71 runs on a sun-kissed second evening, but having added a single against Berg, he chased Sanderson outside his off stump with a slight nip away enough to catch an edge to first slip.It ended a partnership of 91 with Ben Brown, comfortably Sussex’s highest stand of the match.Gareth Berg also picked up where he left off after taking five-for in Sussex’s first innings•Getty Images

Berg evened up the share of wickets with Sanderson again when Delray Rawlins bagged a pair – the allrounder struggling to commit with Berg coming around the wicket with a bit of swing to edge behind. In his next over, the former Middlesex and Hampshire man produced significant in-swing to pin Brown leg-before for 39.Northants were forced to wait 31 balls before Sanderson challenged Stuart Meaker’s outside edge and found a tickle through to Adam Rossington.Ollie Robinson, on the back of an unbeaten 49 and a five-for in the first innings, seemed imperious to the moving ball as he scored a free-flowing 23.But he fell lbw to a nip-backer from Sanderson – the ex-Yorkshire seamer claiming the 15th five-for of his first-class career. The win was wrapped up when Taylor castled Jack Carson, as Sussex lost their last six wickets for 61 runs in 123 morning deliveries. It meant Northants claimed their first victory by an innings since April 2017, and Sussex’s winless run at Wantage Road was extended to 12 games, with their last success coming in 1994.

The sight of fans at Hove for the first time in 20 months had done little to distract from a familiar story for Sussex when their top order succumbed to Ben Sanderson for the third time this month: they slid to 67 for 7 at lunch after opting to bat in the sunshine, and lost an eighth wicket two balls into the afternoon session. One returning punter put in his order at Greig’s Café during the interval by asking for “a cup of tea, please – and do you know anyone who can bat?”As luck would have it, the catering staff managed to pull some strings. Jack Carson and Henry Crocombe, Sussex’s No. 9 and 10 with a combined age of 39, are part of the Covid generation whose first-class careers had been played entirely behind closed doors, with both making debuts in the Bob Willis Trophy last summer. Sussex’s members had turned up just to make sure they existed in the third dimension, rather than being hermetically sealed in the club’s online streaming service; a 99-run stand provided confirmation that they were indeed flesh and bones, and ensured a first-innings total that kept them in the game.Crocombe, a tall right-arm seamer who removed Ben Curran with the new ball, played with a wristy flourish and was dropped twice as he chanced his arm, but it was Carson who looked like he had the potential to become a genuine allrounder. A 20-year-old offspinner from County Armagh, Carson first came to Sussex’s attention eight years ago when Kyle McCallan, the former Ireland international, rang Ed Joyce to recommend a young batter at Waringstown CC in Belfast, whom he insisted was “pretty special”.”It’s pretty hazy, but I think I said to the club that there was a young kid who wanted to have a look at playing for them, though spin was his secondary thing,” Joyce, Sussex’s captain at the time, recalls. “I didn’t realise he was going to go over to England and go to school there but he’s clearly done really well.” Thanks to a sports scholarship at Hurstpierpoint College, Carson moved across the Irish Sea permanently for sixth form, and opportunities for the academy and the seconds were increasingly regular.”We knew he could bowl a bit of offspin but he got his opportunity in the second team because he was scoring hundreds in the academy,” James Kirtley, the club’s T20 head coach and Ian Salisbury’s assistant in other formats, explains. “And since then, Sals has worked his magic – and Sals really is a wizard. It’s a wonderful partnership and double-act.”Related

While his classical action and hard-spun offbreaks have caught the eye since last summer – in Rory Burns, Zak Crawley and Joe Root, he has dismissed three of England’s top four – Carson’s returns with the bat had been a disappointment, with a top score of 21 in his first 17 innings. Here, he was dropped early on, but an organised half-century which featured several compact back-foot punches through point for four dragged Sussex towards respectability and hinted at his potential to balance the side at No. 7 in years to come.A first ovation from his home crowd – which included a recuperating Jofra Archer – made things even sweeter. “I’ve definitely been frustrated with how I’ve batted before today,” he admitted. “Fans have just seen scorecards or live streams so having a crowd in was a great chance to show people in the flesh that I’m here to hang around with the bat.” Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take his team-mates long to suggest he only turns up when fans are in. “That line was pretty swift when I came off – if that’s my lucky charm, so be it.”Carson has made clear that his ultimate ambition is to play Test cricket for England, even if Joyce holds out some hope that he may one day be an Ireland player. Kirtley suggests that a Lions call-up might not be too far away: “His skills are very good for a 20-year-old and I’m sure he will be recognised at an international level shortly, and rightfully. He’s a very fine young prospect.”Ben Sanderson foiled Sussex’s top order – again•Getty Images

But his innings meant that the real star of the day had slipped – perhaps characteristically – under the radar. When Carson steered to third slip shortly before tea, it meant Sanderson had completed his third five-for in as many innings against Sussex, following his 10-wicket haul in the demolition job at Wantage Road. A late developer who had taken a solitary Championship wicket when Northants offered him a trial aged 26, Sanderson has been the image of consistency over the last five seasons and a first-class average of 20.47 demonstrates his skill with the new ball in particular.”They’d rather go to Lord’s than watch Northants for four days,” Sanderson grumbled to last year when asked why he thought England’s selectors had never been in touch despite his record, and while his age (32) and lack of pace mean international honours are unlikely to arrive, there are no county batters who relish the prospect of facing him early on.Defying clear blue skies, Sanderson was devastating against Sussex’s string of left-handers, coming round the wicket from the Cromwell Road End to angle the ball into the bat and then nip it away off the seam. Stiaan van Zyl and Travis Head, the two overseas players, both edged into the cordon, while Aaron Thomason was trapped lbw offering no shot and George Garton was smashed on the knee roll. Gareth Berg, Wayne Parnell and Tom Taylor shared the other five between them, benefitting from both the variable bounce on offer and some injudicious shot selection.A wicket apiece for Sussex’s young seamers and one late in the day for Carson – Rob Keogh, clipping a low catch to short midwicket – pegged Northants back, but they have an opportunity to secure a significant first-innings lead in the morning. Victory this week may be enough to nudge them ahead of Yorkshire and into second place in Group Three; after their promotion-that-wasn’t in 2019, qualification for Division One would be another impressive feat.

French outlet share information on Everton’s approach for 27 y/o free agent

Everton are said to be one of the clubs interested in completing the signing of a former Ligue 1 player turned free agent, according to a fresh claim from the French media.

Latest Everton news

The Blues have endured a disastrous start to the new Premier League season, losing all three matches, including their shocking late 3-2 defeat at home to Bournemouth last time around.

Next up for Sean Dyche's Everton side is a tough-looking trip to Aston Villa on Saturday, and it looks as though they may have to make do without Seamus Coleman for the game. The right-back went off injured in the Republic of Ireland's 2-0 defeat to England in the UEFA Nations League over the weekend, and is now facing a race against time to be available for the trip to Villa Park.

Such has been the nature of the Blues' form this season, it is only natural that pressure is growing on Dyche, and potential successors are already emerging. Graham Potter is one such name that has been mentioned, with the Englishman still out of work after an unsuccessful time in charge of Chelsea.

On the transfer front, Everton are now unable to bring in players who are tied down to a club, but it looks as though they could look to make a move for a free agent.

Everton make enquiry for 27 y/o free agent

According to a new report from French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Everton have made an approach for Yusuf Yazici, who is currently a free agent after departing Lille at the end of last season. The 27-year-old spent five years at the Ligue 1 club, but was also loaned out a number of times, spending spells at the likes of CSKA Moscow and Trabzonspor.

Leicester City are also noted as possible suitors for Yazici, as they look to bolster their own options, with the Turk primarily an attacking midfielder, and it is the Foxes who are in pole position despite both the Toffees and Bournemouth making enquiries.

It has also been claimed that Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign the former Lille man, with a host of clubs in the mix to secure his services.

Everton are in need of depth as this season goes on, as highlighted by the lack of quality on show in their opening three matches, and Yazici could be an ideal versatile addition to Dyche's squad. He has been capped 45 times by Turkey, which says a lot about his ability as an international footballer, and he has also scored three goals for his country.

Everton hit by injury scare to "amazing" £55k-a-week ace before Aston Villa

It’s another setback for Sean Dyche.

1 ByHenry Jackson Sep 8, 2024

Given the free aspect of the transfer, there wouldn't be too much financial risk involved when it comes to the Blues signing Yazici, so if he did come in and struggled to hit the ground running, it would be no disaster. On the flip side, he could be an inspired addition, giving the Merseysiders the extra class needed to ensure they avoid yet another relegation battle.

Aston Villa’s "serious talent" is now worth 111% more since Emery took over

One of the most underrated academies in the Premier League currently is that of Aston Villa. Since the competition rebranded from the First Division in 1992, the Villans have produced some excellent players, including the competition’s all-time leading appearance maker, Gareth Barry.

Other players produced from Villa’s underrated academy include Jack Grealish, whose £100m move from the Villans to Manchester City was once a British transfer record, and Gary Cahill, a Champions League winner with Chelsea.

Aston Villa winger Jack Grealish.

Since Unai Emery took over managerial duties at Villa Park, he has nurtured some more homegrown talent, but one player, in particular, has stood out and has seen his value rise greatly in the time Emery has been in charge.

Jacob Ramsey’s value in the 2022/23 season

The player in question here is Jacob Ramsey. The 23-year-old midfielder is a boyhood Villan and was born locally to the club, in Birmingham. He made a rapid rise from the youth ranks to the first team and has since become a key player for his boyhood side.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

The former England under-21 international has particularly been making waves under Emery, with the Spaniard helping him to fine-tune his game and become the “serious talent” widely known today, as football scout Antonio Mango described him.

The former Arsenal boss took charge at Villa Park in October 2022. In November, a then 21-year-old Ramsey was valued at just £23.6m, according to Transfermarkt. He was still breaking through into the Villa first team, although previous manager Steven Gerrard had given him several opportunities.

However, when Emery took charge, the youngster really showed his class. In that first season under the Spanish tactician, the 2022/23 campaign, the Birmingham-born attacking midfielder played 24 times, scoring five times and grabbing seven assists.

Impressively, all five of those goals, along with six of the assists, came in the Premier League, a competition in which he made 22 appearances. That is his best return in a single top-flight season to date.

By the end of the season, the youngster’s value had shot up, and he was worth £27m as a result of his impressive performances.

Ramsey’s value in 2023/24

Sadly for Ramsey, the 2023/24 campaign was hampered by injury. The 23-year-old missed 27 games over 186 days with three different ailments last term. First, a foot injury kept him sidelined before he missed a short period with a hamstring issue, and then a toe injury which kept him out for 17 games and 119 days.

Jacob Ramsey in Premier League action for Aston Villa.

With all that time on the sideline, the attacking midfielder did not quite manage to hit the same highest as he did previously. Last term, he played 21 games in all competitions, scoring one goal and grabbing two assists. Just one goal and assist apiece came in the top flight, in 16 games.

It was certainly a frustrating time for Ramsey, although his value did still rise slightly. By June this year, he was worth an impressive £50m, a price Villa slapped on his head, according to Football Insider. This certainly shows just how much he has thrived under Emery. In all, his value under the Spaniard rose an impressive 111% from when he first took charge at Villa Park.

The Villa number 41 has started the new season strongly. He has made three appearances so far, although is yet to start a game as he is eased back to fitness. Ramsey already has an assist to his name, for Jhon Duran against West Ham United, a goal that proved to be a winner.

Jacob Ramsey for Aston Villa

There is no doubt that, in Ramsey, the Villans have their next academy star in the making. If he can stay fit this season, he could once again put up some stellar numbers under Emery as Villa look to impress on the biggest stage, the Champions League.

Sam Billings primed to seize his chance after life on England's fringes

Buttler injury opens door to extended run in ODI squad after luckless tour of India

At the start of March, Sam Billings was full of positivity about an upcoming three-match period that could have locked him into England’s T20 World Cup squad: he had not been given an opportunity in their T20I series in India, but had expected to play all three of the ODIs that followed before trying to force his way into the Delhi Capitals team in the IPL. “It’s really exciting,” he said at the time. “The strategy was always to give myself the best chance of being selected in the World Cup.”But things have not gone to plan. Billings suffered a shoulder injury diving on the boundary in the first ODI, ruling him out of the next two games, and after starting the IPL on Delhi’s bench, was in line to make his first appearance of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders but watched as the worsening Covid-19 situation caused the tournament to be postponed. That meant a flight home to the UK and 10 days of self-isolation in a hotel room, “watching the planes fly over [Heathrow] Terminal Five”.Desperate to get onto the pitch, he was the first English IPL player back in the County Championship, playing straight after his quarantine period was complete, before spending three weeks as a back-up wicketkeeper in the Test squad – dropping a tough catch at fine leg when he got onto the pitch as a sub fielder – and playing three Blast games for Kent, taking his social-media trolls to task after an innings of 30 off 30 balls on a tough Cardiff pitch proved to be match-winning.”It’s just nice to be playing, full stop,” he said on Friday morning, before England’s T20I squad travelled from Cardiff to the Ageas Bowl. “I think [last night] was my fourth innings of the summer and my fifth since January. It’s been an experience, definitely, to say the least.”It has been deflating at times, not playing any cricket and missing out on all fronts, really. It’s kind of been a close shave in all formats at the moment and it was just nice to be back out there playing last night: it’s a lot better than running the drinks.”In that light, Billings’ innings of 24 off 29 balls was more important than the numbers suggest. He put on 54 off 48 balls with Liam Livingstone for the fifth wicket, and while he chopped on against Wanindu Hasaranga with 13 runs required, their stand had secured the game after a nervous stumble to 36 for 4 in the run chase.Specifically, Billings highlighted the fact that, while in years gone by, he might have looked to play some shots and “make a statement”, he instead focused only on taking the game deep and nudging ones and twos to build a partnership on a turgid pitch.Related

Sam Billings: 'I just want to be tricky to bowl at'

Livingstone makes virtue of versatility in pitch for World Cup role

England's bowlers set up big win before Buttler seals 1-0 lead

“Last night was really pleasing from my point of view,” he said. “In the past I would have tried even harder to make a bit more of a statement as opposed to just getting the job done. It was a real shame to get out but to get stuck in and play the role that was needed for the team: it wasn’t pretty from Liam and I at times but ultimately it’s about getting the side over the line.”In the past, I’ve put way too much pressure on myself, but I think last year for me was a huge turning point. I put myself under a lot of pressure, of course, when I got that opportunity initially, but the consistent run of games against very good attacks in Australia and Pakistan really give me confidence just to back my own game, and it was a consistency more for me that was really pleasing last year.”[Last night] was my fourth game in about six months so for me the pressure was actually off a little bit in that I just concentrated on doing the basics really well. When you haven’t played in a while, you just strip it right back and concentrate on those kind of things. And I’m 30 now – I’m no spring chicken anymore – so I’ve got a bit of experience behind me. The age thing definitely helps in giving you some perspective.”Billings was likely to continue in the middle order during the ODI series against Sri Lanka regardless, but Jos Buttler’s injury – confirmed on Friday to be a calf tear, which had opened up a spot for Billings in the second T20I – effectively locks him in as a middle-order batter. While Ben Stokes is certain to come back into the side when fully fit, Billings will have an opportunity to build on an impressive run last summer against Ireland and Australia, which included his first international hundred, and force some tricky selection decisions further down the line.”In terms of ODIs, I had a really good summer last year and averaged 83 [78.75] throughout that summer in that format so I would be pretty disappointed if I didn’t get a gig. But this team is a very hard one to get into to.”[England] have two of the best white-ball batsmen and wicketkeepers in the world [in Buttler and Jonny Bairstow] but at the end of the day, you never know with injuries. You have just got to try and offer as much as you can to any side you go into. The more options you can give any side, it definitely helps your case; I’m working on the offspin as we speak…”
