Paul Stirling’s fighting 89 went in vain as Afghanistan chased down their target of 162 with 8.1 overs to spare
The Report by Hemant Brar28-Feb-2019
Mujeeb Ur Rahman is mobbed by his team-mates•AFP
Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s three-wicket haul set up Afghanistan’s five-wicket win over Ireland in the first ODI in Dehradun. All three of his wickets came in his opening spell, during which he reduced Ireland to 14 for 3. The visitors couldn’t recover and were bowled out for 161 despite Paul Stirling’s fighting 89. Afghanistan didn’t face much difficulty in their chase, getting over the line in the 42nd over.William Porterfield opted to bat first but the Ireland batsmen had no clue against the guile of Mujeeb. Bowling with the new ball, Mujeeb struck with his third delivery of the match as Porterfield chopped a length ball on to the stumps.Andy Balbrinie was the next to go. The batsman tried to sweep Mujeeb from outside off only to miss and get struck on the pads. Umpire S Ravi didn’t take long to raise his finger but replays showed the impact was outside the line of the off stump.Off the very next ball, Mujeeb snared debutant James McCollum, who went back and across to a googly only to end up playing outside the line. This time there was no doubt about the lbw decision. Mujeeb’s figures at this point were 4-3-2-3.The spinner could have had Stirling lbw in his next over but Ravi once again erred, this time benefitting Ireland. Apart from that call Stirling looked firm in defence, but the middle order – Kevin O’Brien, Simi Singh and Stuart Poynter – offered little resistance and soon Ireland were reeling at 69 for 6.Stirling eventually found an ally in George Dockrell and the two added 76 for the seventh wicket in 15.2 overs. During their association, Stirling switched gears and hit Mohammad Nabi for sixes over long-on and deep midwicket. Rashid Khan broke the partnership in the 46th over, bowling Dockrell for 37 for his first wicket of the match.Stirling hit back-to-back fours off Dawlat Zadran in the 49th over, the first a lofted off-drive and then a cheeky scoop over short fine leg, but was bowled in the next over as he moved too far across only to see a straight delivery clatter into the stumps.Hazratullah Zazai began Afghanistan’s response positively, smashing Tim Murtagh for a six over long-on before clubbing two more fours in the bowler’s next over. However, the run-flow slowed after that and while trying to break the shackles, Zazai was caught off Barry McCarthy by O’Brien near long-on.Mohammad Shahzad and Rahmat Shah took the side to 90 without taking any risks before Boy Rankin dismissed both in quick succession. And when Hashmatullah Shahidi fell to Simi, Afghanistan were 104 for 4, still 58 away from their target. But with the asking rate always well under four, even the dot balls didn’t create enough pressure. Gulbadin Naib then swatted McCarthy for three fours – all towards midwicket – in the 37th over to put the issue beyond doubt. Soon after, he hit Rankin for two fours and a six before falling four short of his half-century. With nine required for victory, Najibullah Zadran smashed Dockrell for two sixes to seal the deal.
The last few seasons have seen Leeds United spend sums of money that some fans could only have dreamed of prior to promotion to the Premier League, with over £300m leaving the wallet of Andrea Radrizzani and co. But, things are slightly different now after relegation to the Championship, as Daniel Farke works on bringing the club back to the big time at the first time of asking.
To do that, he may need a few handy additions next month. So, with the January transfer window upon us, we at Football FanCast have decided to take a look at some of the worst January transfer signings that have been made at Leeds United.

The Englishman joined Leeds on loan with a further agreement to a permanent deal. However, that permanent deal was later cancelled, which led to a lawsuit that saw Stewart win £750,000 in due wages.
He made 11 appearances for the Whites, but failed to make any kind of impact, hence the desperation to cancel the deal.

Jimmy Kebe on a six-month loan deal, and that was all it turned out to be.
For a player who had so much hype behind him when he joined, fans were shocked at just how bad the attacker was. One of the common themes was just how lazy he was. Bielsa certainly wouldn't have put up with it.
He scored just one goal in nine appearances for the Yorkshire club.

A young Andros Townsend joined Leeds back in January of 2012. He played just seven times but managed to score a goal and assist one, though never really looked amazing.
And, Neil Warnock revealed that the player has opted to cut short his loan spell.
He stated: "His agent told me he didn't like here, he wasn't happy, and he hadn't settled. I've heard that Birmingham want to sign him, I don't know if that's got anything to do with it."

De Bock was brought back in January of 2018 to be the solution at left-back, but he made a number of mistakes and looked rather uncomfortable defensively, which affected his minutes on the field.
It was obvious he was unlikely to play much of a part in the future of Leeds when Marcelo Bielsa took charge as he went out on four loan spells, before joining Zulte-Waregem on a free transfer.
For someone who was brought in as a solution and cost actual money, it turned out to be a stinker of a signing.

Habib Habibou came to Leeds after a prolific spell in Belgium, and to be fair, he looked good on his debut. But, it was all downhill from there as he made just four appearances for the club without scoring.
He later went on to reveal that he regretted his transfer to Leeds United, and it's safe to say so did the fans.
At least it was only a loan deal.

Alfonso Pedraza moved to Elland Road back in January of 2017 on an initial loan with the option to buy for £8.5 million, should the Whites have been promoted in the 2016/17 season.
Leeds finished 7th and decided not to cut their ties with the player there and then. He made just 14 appearances in his time at the club, only managing to score one goal in that time, which was deemed not good enough.

Striker Edgar Cani signed in a temporary move from Italian club Catania during the era of Massimo Cellino (pictured above), but ultimately made only four appearances for the Whites, failing to find the net in a disappointing chapter in the journeyman’s career. He would briefly find relative stability at lower-league Italian outfit Pisa, but left Elland Road without making any lasting memories.
Another waste from the Cellino days.

Kiko Casilla left European giants Real Madrid to join Leeds United back in January of 2019. And, to be fair to him, he made 62 appearances, with 36 of these coming during Leeds' promotion-winning season back in 2019/20 under Marcelo Bielsa.
A number of mistakes, including this one against Brentford, led to plenty of Leeds fans calling for his head.
But it was another incident that overshadowed his time at the club, as Casilla was found guilty of racism towards Charlton Athletic's Jonathan Leko, which resulted in him being banned for eight games.
He then lost his place to Illan Meslier, and the rest is history.
1 Jean-Kevin Augustin Joined on loan – 27th January 2020

Jean-Kevin Augustin is a name that will no doubt leave a sour taste in the mouths of Leeds fans.
He joined back in January of 2020 with an obligation to buy for £18 million, provided Leeds got promoted from the Championship. However, everything soon went downhill as Marcelo Bielsa wasn't convinced by Augustin's physical ability to operate as he wanted, and he played just 48 minutes in Leeds colours before English football was shut down by the pandemic.
So, this complicated things as the Whites earned a long-awaited place in the Premier League. Because the season ended up concluding in July, the Whites argued the clause expired at the end of June, by which time they had not been promoted, whereas parent club Leipzig believed that it had been extended until the delayed end of the campaign, when they were.
The courts sided with Leipzig, ordering Leeds to pay the £18m after an unsuccessful appeal, but they reached a £15.5m "amicable resolution" with the German club in December.

The biggest development at Leeds United thus far in the January transfer window has been the early exit of Djed Spence, sent back to Tottenham Hotspur halfway through what was supposed to be a season-long loan spell.
Unsurprisingly, Daniel Farke now wants to replace Spence by adding another full-back to his squad before the deadline. The Athletic's Phil Hay says that Leeds are admirers of Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams, but may struggle to sign him because he part of Nuno's plans.
However, Williams isn't the only player on the Whites' list, with Darren Witcoop reporting last week that Burnley's Connor Roberts was a possible target, and now there's been an encouraging update on the prospect of the Welshman moving to Elland Road.
Roberts fancies Leeds switch
According to The Yorkshire Evening Post's Graham Smyth Leeds have been long-term fans of Roberts because of his "style and athleticism", and the player himself would apparently now "welcome" a move that would give him the chance to play alongside Wales teammates Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Dan James at club level.
Leeds United transfer target Connor Roberts in action for Wales.
However, the report also stresses that "there is currently nothing imminent in the works" amid uncertainty over Burnley's willingness to do business. He's presently below Vitinho in Vincent Kompany's hierarchy, but the Clarets are unlikely to sanction his exit unless they can bring in a new competitor.
Roberts has the ideal CV for Farke
Roberts started the season as a key player for newly-promoted Burnley, making Kompany's XI for eight out of the first nine matches. However, he hasn't started a single game since that run from mid-August to late October, and has actually only played 35 minutes across three substitute appearances in that time. Leeds have no doubt been keeping tabs on his situation and sensed an opportunity in light of his slide down the pecking order.
While the 28-year-old has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League, he's previously been a shining light for the Lancashire outfit in the second tier. As the table below shows, Roberts was right up there among Championship defenders last season when it came to both goalscoring and creativity, which shows he can be a multi-facted offensive threat.

That form earned him a place in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, but he'd also shone in 2020/21 with previous club Swansea, scoring five times and setting up seven more to land the club's Player of the Season award.
Football journalist Will Lancaster has called him a "top quality Championship right-back", and he could be an ideal loan signing for a Leeds side chasing promotion. Roberts can help steer them safely to a play-off berth – they're currently nine points ahead of seventh-place Wolves and seven off the automatic promotion places – and then make a difference in the decisive post-season matches.
Burnley, of course, are battling to avoid relegation in their first season back and currently sit five points from safety, so they can't afford to sacrifice any depth, but Leeds will be hoping they acquire a new face who frees up Roberts for a transfer.
He looks set to miss the World Cup bus, having been out of India’s ODI side for nearly two years, but the offspinner isn’t ready to think of himself as Test-only player yet
ESPNcricinfo staff17-Mar-2019
R Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik at a promotional event prior to IPL 2019•ESPNcricinfo Ltd
On June 30, when ODI cricket’s top two sides meet in one of the World Cup’s most anticipated clashes, India’s spin discussions will revolve around Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja. One man who almost certainly will not is R Ashwin. On that day, unless India’s selectors spring a major surprise with their World Cup squad, it will have been exactly two years since Ashwin last played an ODI.Since that game against West Indies in Antigua, Ashwin has found himself cast as a Test specialist, another fingerspinning casualty in the worldwide push for wristspin as a wicket-taking force in white-ball cricket. Kuldeep and Chahal have been India’s first-choice spinners in ODIs since then, and if Jadeja has re-entered the picture over recent months, it’s thanks in large part to his utility as a lower-order hitter and gun fielder.Ashwin hasn’t reconciled himself to being a Test-only player, however, and says his exclusion from limited-overs cricket is down to a “perception” that wristspin is a must in the shorter formats.”I am not looking at it like that because I am no slouch,” Ashwin said in an event in Mumbai on Saturday. “In the white-ball format, my records are not bad like what it is perceived to be. It is out of perception that wristspinners are required in the modern day one-day cricket format, that [is why] I am sitting out. The last one-day match that I played, I got 3 for 28.”I would always look back at my career and say it is not due to my effort that I am sitting out of the team, it is due to the supply and demand that the team requires.”I went and played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali [domestic T20 tournament] and I had a decent outing and that is how I look at it. I am playing cricket and it is not like I need to specialise in one particular format. It is the challenges of the modern-day game, I will be looking forward to do whatever I can do best.”Perception or not, the rise of wristspin in ODIs has coincided with Ashwin trying to reinvent himself as a limited-overs bowler; during last year’s IPL, he alternated between legspin and his usual offspin, and he’s set to do so again this season for Kings XI Punjab.Kuldeep Yadav practices at training as R Ashwin watches•Getty Images
“I have always maintained that you can spin the ball into the batsman or out of the batsman, you can’t do anything more than that,” Ashwin said when asked if he was working on any new variations. “I am just adding more ammunition to my own skill and try and add more strength to my game and that’s all it has always been.”I have never played for the galleries, never really played for the records, never really played for places. I just enjoy the sport, the sport has given me everything. When I picked up the bat and ball as a eight-year-old it gave me everything, I love it. Even today when I play a club game, when I play on the streets, I enjoy it. For me it is all about playing the game that I love and excelling in the best possible way I can.”Ashwin also weighed in on the discussion over whether India’s World Cup contenders should have their workloads monitored during the IPL. Virat Kohli recently said it was up to individual players to monitor their fitness requirements and arrive at the World Cup sharp and match-fit. Ashwin felt a clearer picture would develop as the IPL progresses, and that the bowlers might require rest at some point.”I don’t think as a cricketer you can look far ahead about what needs to be done and how you can manage it,” he said. “As a cricketer or as a sportsperson, you just concentrate on what happens today. The franchise has invested money on you. Obviously it is a massive tournament, everybody plays for pride, everybody wants to perform and excel. It definitely stays at the back of the head because it is being spoken about a lot more right now.”I am sure the players are responsible enough and more fitness-aware and able to handle it better than they ever were. I don’t think going into the tournament people will be thinking about it but as the tournament pans out and the way it goes for each and every franchise and for each and every player, they will take decisions wisely. Probably because of the number of injuries and the amount of premium players that are right now available for the country, and how important every spot is.”It is a dream for every cricketer to represent his country at the World Cup, it is a big stage. I think that is the point of view from where they are coming. Obviously, bowlers have more chances of succumbing to injuries because of the workload they go through, it is physically more hard on the body than the batters. Probably from that point of view, if you look at a [Jasprit] Bumrah or a Bhuvneshwar [Kumar], Bumrah has been fine but Bhuvneshwar has had a few concerns over the last year or so. I think from that point of view the bowlers need to be taken good care of.”
