Rodgers must ruthlessly ditch Yang to start Celtic’s "throwback" 5 ft 9 whiz

Celtic are back in Scottish Premiership action once again as they play host to Hibernian at Parkhead this evening in the hope of securing a second successive victory.

Brendan Rodgers' side come into this clash off the back of a 3-1 win over St Johnstone on Sunday as they came from 1-0 down to secure all three points.

Second half goals from Callum McGregor, Matt O'Riley, and James Forrest won the match for the Hoops, who were trailing at half time.

Despite the win, it was far from a perfect performance from the Bhoys and Rodgers could look to make some alterations to his starting XI from the game.

With this in mind, the Northern Irish head coach must brutally ditch Hyun-jun Yang from the line-up and bring Michael Johnston in from the start.

Hyun-jun Yang's performance against St Johnstone in numbers

Speaking on Sky Sports' official coverage of the match, co-commentator Chris Sutton – a former Celtic centre-forward – described the South Korean winger's performance as "sloppy".

The pundit criticised Yang's poor touches and failure to control the ball, particularly after one incident where the ball bounced up and appeared to go between his legs before rolling out for an opposition throw.

Celtic winger Hyun-jun Yang.

Rodgers started him on the right flank but the 21-year-old lightweight was not able to make an impact at the top end of the pitch in the first half.

Yang only completed 68% (13/19) of his attempted passes and did not produce a single shot, 'big chance' created, or completed dribble in 45 minutes.

These statistics show that the forward was unable to make things happen in the final third and left a lot to be desired with his all-round play, which meant that he was not a reliable outlet for the side.

The summer signing, who lost three of his four ground duels, was withdrawn by Rodgers at half time and Johnston came on to replace him.

Johnston's performance against St Johnstone in numbers

Throughout the second half, the Ireland international caught the eye with an impressive display that should earn him a start ahead of Yang this evening.

Johnston produced one shot, one completed dribble, and two key passes in his 45 minutes on the pitch, which shows that he made a tangible impact at the top end of the pitch, albeit it did not lead to a goal or an assist for him.

The 24-year-old whiz, who was once hailed as a "throwback" winger by Joe Hart, also completed 100% of his 27 attempted passes and this shows that he was anything but sloppy with his use of the ball, in contrast to Yang.

Celtic forward Mikey Johnston.

Celtic's academy graduate provided an exciting, yet reliable, outlet down the flank with his impressive play in possession and should, therefore, be unleashed from the start against Hibernian.

Johnston is yet to start a Premiership match this season but has completed four dribbles, made three key passes, and created one 'big chance' in just three appearances as a substitute for the Hoops.

It is now time for Rodgers to ruthlessly ditch Yang in order to open up a space on the right flank for the 5 foot 9 wizard to start in the attack.

Tim Paine shuts down Clarke's criticism of new Australia

Tim Paine told ESPNcricinfo that his team has no concerns with being liked by the opposition and that the focus lies on winning back the Australian public’s trust this summer

Australia captain Tim Paine has shut down criticism by former captain Michael Clarke that the national team was trying too hard to be liked. Paine told ESPNcricinfo that Australia were “not concerned about being liked one bit” by opposing teams, and were principally concerned with finding a way to win this summer while regaining the trust and respect of the Australian public.Clarke made waves with his contention that Australia “won’t win s**t” by “worrying about being liked”, though his former team-mate Simon Katich quickly asserted that Clarke was “missing the point” in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal. Paine, who has instituted a custom of shaking hands with opposing teams at the start of a series, said that there was a big difference between earning respect and trying to be liked by opponents in a contest. He also added that the Australian team’s approach had already evolved, from the still stunned group he led onto the field at the Wanderers in the wake of Newlands, to the team who held their ground against Pakistan in Dubai before losing in Abu Dhabi, and now the combination who – reinforced by their best fast bowlers and on home turf – would go toe-to-toe with India.”No one has spoken about being liked, certainly by the opposition,” Paine told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve spoken about wanting to get the Australian public’s trust and make sure that clearly you want the Australian public and cricket fans to like or love the Australian Test team. Certainly there’s that aspect, but from an opposition perspective we’re not concerned about being liked one bit.”Tim Paine and Imam-ul-Haq shake hands before the start of play•Getty Images

“We’re still going to play hard Australian cricket, as Michael put it, that’s not going to change. Clearly Johannesburg was a really strange circumstance and a difficult game to play in for everyone I think, but going into Dubai the guys competed as hard as they could and they’ll continue to, and we’ve got some more senior guys coming back now.”With Hazlewood, Starc and Cummins, that’s only going to help guys grow with confidence around them. With guys like Travis Head and Marcus Harris, when you’ve got Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc and Patrick Cummins running in, it’s a bit easier to play that confident, aggressive style of cricket that Australia want to play and our team certainly wants to play.”The limited-overs captain Aaron Finch had spoken recently about the distinction between playing “hard cricket” for an opposition to cope with and falling into the “easy” trap of trying to put opponents off their games verbally. It was a sentiment that Paine agreed with, stating that part of the “tweaks” the team were trying to make was unlearning what had evolved into an unbecoming habit.”I totally agree and I think that’s one of the small tweaks we’re trying to make,” Paine said. “I think there’s been times in the past where we’ve gone overboard with that and actually gone away from what we’re good at. Our No. 1 strength is our skill, so we’ve got to play hard cricket in terms of making it difficult for guys to bat against us and to difficult to bowl against us – we want to make it an uncomfortable environment for people to play against us, but we want to do it mainly by our skills.”At the same time we’re going to be up and about and playing that tough, competitive Australian brand of cricket that Australia’s always been renowned for, it’s just knowing at times we might need to pull it back and make sure we’re getting the most important thing right first, and that’s our skill.”To that end, Paine said he would give his players the freedom to decide whether they needed the extra spur of an individual contest with an opponent, or simply to concentrate on their own game. Equally, he was adamant that his men would not back down from confrontation if members of the Indian team went looking for one, with the important difference that they would not lapse into abuse.”It depends on the individual. I know some guys enjoy it, [to] some guys it doesn’t matter,” Paine said. “In Test cricket and with some of the guys in the Indian side there’s going to be times where there’s a bit of heat out in the middle, and guys are going to be right into the contest. The focus for us has got to be on delivering our skill as well as we possibly can, so if guys want to get involved in a bit of that stuff to get themselves going, then that’s great.”But we now know the difference between what’s right and what’s wrong, and what’s expected. We’re not going to be going over the top, but certainly you’ve got to stand up for your team and your teammates, and I’m sure when the time comes for that we’ll be doing that. But the main focus for us will be to play the best cricket we can.”

Ahead of next month, David Moyes will know that he’ll need to strengthen his squad should he want to gain some consistency and seriously compete for a place in the top six, but in order to make room for fresh faces in the building, some of his existing players will have to leave to raise the necessary funds.

So far this season, Said Benrahma has made just four starts in the top-flight having fallen slightly out of favour under the manager (WhoScored – Benrahma statistics), and it’s fair to say that the left-winger isn’t best pleased about his lack of game time which he’s shown on his social media.

Algeria’s international recently posted a photo of himself in the club’s training wear on Instagram, with a caption of nothing but a zipped mouth emoji, suggesting that he daren’t speak up about his situation, though it doesn’t sound like he’ll have to put up with it for much longer if the following update is to be believed.

West Ham happy to sell Benrahma

According to The Sunday Mirror (via Sports View), West Ham are open to offers for Benrahma in January. The London Stadium forward is attracting interest from Ligue 1 outfit Lyon, alongside several unnamed clubs in Saudi Arabia, so this could be one to keep a close eye on in the weeks leading up to the transfer window.

West Ham United forwardSaid Benrahma.

While Benrahma hasn’t been that much of a regular starter under Moyes this season, West Ham will know the bags of potential that he has in his locker to offer, therefore,David Sullivanwould perhaps be wiser to retain his services at least until the summer, when it will be easier to find a replacement.

Since joining the club from Brentford, he has racked up 43 contributions, 24 goals and 19 assists, from 151 appearances, showing the positive impact he can make in the final third, but he’s also comfortable playing in several other areas (Transfermarkt – Benrahma statistics).

The Irons’ 28-year-old is a versatile operator having been deployed in seven different positions over the grass since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and three roles in the midfield, so his ability to provide cover in areas outside of his own makes him a useful option to have in the building.

When he’s at the top of his game, Josh Bunting has claimed that Benrahma can be “unplayable”, so even though he might not be getting in the team from the get go as much as he would like, the hierarchy would be making a mistake if they were to let him go next month.

Warner, Liton lift Sylhet Sixers off bottom place

A day after being bowled out for 68, the Sixers put in an all-round performance to beat Rangpur Riders by 27 runs

The Report by Peter Della Penna16-Jan-2019

David Warner steers the ball square•Raton Gomes

How the game played outDesperate to dig his side out of the BPL cellar, Sylhet Sixers captain David Warner showed he was willing to resort to any means necessary to get his side a victory. Just 24 hours after he was bowled for a duck in match where the Sixers subsided for 68, Warner pulled out all the stops. That included switching stances to bat right-handed to successfully swat Chris Gayle for a six and two fours during a half-century in his side’s 187 for 5 on the way to their second win of BPL 2019.Rilee Rossouw gave the Sixers a scare with a belligerent half-century in reply, but Rangpur Riders eventually ran out of steam once the tournament’s leading scorer fell in the 12th over. Mehedi Hasan Rana and Taskin Ahmed took two wickets apiece to tie down the Riders lineup.Turning points- Warner’s decision to bat right-handed for three balls v Gayle resulted in a much-needed 14-run surge at the tail-end of the Sixers innings after he had been struggling to get Gayle away.- Riders lost a trio of wickets in the Powerplay on what might be called a “mini Nelson” with the score on 11, including two taken by Rana in the second over.- Rossouw and Mohammad Mithun were blazing through an 89-run fourth-wicket stand to threaten the Sixers at 100 for 3 in the 12th, but Taskin removed both in back-to-back overs to snuff out the Riders’ last threat.Star of the dayWarner might get most of the headlines for his audacious manoeuvre against Gayle, but Liton Das provided the horsepower to drive Sixers through most of the innings. Warner and Liton swapped places in the order after the previous day’s debacle vs Comilla Victorians and it paid off for both, but especially Liton. He took advantage of his promotion to open the innings by bashing the Riders for a 29-ball fifty, including a devastating 17-run sixth over to end the Sixers Powerplay at 61 for 0.The big missAlex Hales, who now has two ducks in three innings in BPL 2019. The Englishman got a juicy half-volley while backing away to carve Rana through the off side in the second over, but only managed to drive straight to Liton at cover.Where the teams standSixers move to four points in a tie for fifth alongside Riders after digging themselves out of last place, which is now held by Khulna Titans, who are on two points.

Sarwate spins Vidarbha in front on 13-wicket day

Saurashtra stutter to 58 for 5 in their second innings, still 148 runs away from the target

The Report by Shamya Dasgupta06-Feb-2019

Aditya Sarwate got the big wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara for the second time in the match•PTI

Last ball of the ninth over of the Saurashtra second innings. Cheteshwar Pujara leans forward to defend a flighted delivery from Aditya Sarwate on off and middle. He plays for the turn from the left-arm spinner, but there isn’t any, and he is trapped plumb in front for a five-ball duck.Sarwate sets off, his team-mates in hot pursuit while also high-fiving each other, before he stops and lets out a roar. It is, after all, the big moment, and Sarwate has done it two times in two innings. He has done much more than that, actually. After picking up five wickets in the Saurashtra first innings, Sarwate winkled out three top Saurashtra batsmen inside nine overs, leaving them 22 for three in a chase of 206. First-innings centurion Snell Patel – check. Harvik Desai – check. And Pujara, the big fish – check. Not ideal from Saurashtra’s point of view as they looked to avoid making it three final losses in seven seasons, but perfect for Vidarbha, the defending champions. It got worse for Saurashtra as Arpit Vasavada was done in by Umesh Yadav’s pace, sending a regulation catch behind the stumps. Then Sheldon Jackson, very early in his innings, stepped out to Akshay Wakhare and attempted to send the ball out of Jamtha. The ball kept low, and snaked it to hit the stumps.Vishvaraj Jadeja, composed but not overly cautious so far in his innings, went to stumps unbeaten on 23, and had for company Kamlesh Makvana on two.Dharmendrasinh Jadeja completed a six-wicket haul•PTI

Earlier, after they started on 55 for two, Vidarbha batted two sessions, added 145 runs, and lost their eight remaining wickets, four of them to Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, who completed a six-for in the process.Ganesh Satish and Wasim Jaffer were in the middle when proceedings began, but Dharmendrasinh found Jaffer’s edge in the eighth over of the morning with one that didn’t bounce much, and substitute wicketkeeper Avi Barot pouched the catch. The scoreboard read 71 for three at that stage, and it was 73 for five in almost no time as Dharmendrasinh trapped Satish in front for 35 and Jaydev Unadkat got a full-pitched delivery to straighten and go past Akshay Wadkar’s defensive prod and hit timber.Vidarbha needed a fightback, and they got a bit of it from Mohit Kale and Akshay Karnewar, the two adding 32 runs before Makvana caught Karnewar’s edge on the drive and Desai clung on at slip.Kale battled on to make a valuable 38 on a pitch that was turning big by that stage, but the big contribution came from Sarwate, who top-scored in the innings with 49 before becoming the last wicket to fall, having given himself and his bowling mates more to bowl at than looked likely at one stage.Umesh also chipped in with a 12-ball 15 as the last three Vidarbha wickets added 66 runs – it has been a trend in the game, the last three wickets had put up 116 in Vidarbha’s first dig and 123 in Saurashtra’s reply. Saurashtra will hope Vishvaraj and Makvana, and next-man Prerak Mankad, don’t leave the tail with too much to do, but it might well be the case if Sarwate & Co. have it their way on the fifth morning.

Farke could land Summerville 2.0 in Leeds move for "unstoppable" 5 ft 8 dynamo

The relentless Championship schedule is already starting to impact Leeds United and their performances as they have dropped points in the last two matches.

Daniel Farke's side were held to a 1-1 draw last time out against Coventry at Elland Road and that came off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Those two results have left the Whites a staggering ten points adrift of Ipswich Town in second and 13 points behind league-leaders Leicester City, who currently occupy the two automatic promotion places.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Leeds are competing to make an instant return to the Premier League after they were relegated from the top-flight at the end of last season, but will have to do so via the play-offs unless they can oust one of the top two out of the way during the second half of the campaign.

The January transfer window is set to open for business next month and the Yorkshire-based outfit could dip into the market to provide their promotion push with a boost heading into the final few months of the season.

Leeds transfer news – Kerem Akturkoglu

A recent report from Turkish outlet Fanatik claimed that Leeds are one of the teams showing an interest in Galatasaray forward Kerem Akturkoglu.

It was stated that the Whites and Italian side Lazio are both eyeing up the talented whiz ahead of a possible swoop for his services in 2024.

Fanatik also reported that several clubs from England, Italy, and France have been in 'frequent' contact with the player's agents to determine how viable a transfer could be either in January or next summer.

However, it was also claimed that Galatasaray have decided, after an internal meeting to discuss their strategy, that they will not be cashing in on any of their star players and only those already on the transfer list will be allowed to depart.

This means that Leeds could have a tough job on their hands to convince the Turkish giants to part ways with Akturkoglu when the window opens.

Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

However, the sale of one of their current forwards could provide them with the funds to make an attractive offer to Galatasaray, which is where Wilfried Gnonto could come in.

Football Insider recently reported that Leeds could accept an offer for the Italy international in January as the 20-year-old wants to play regular first-team football.

Premier League and Serie A sides are said to be keeping an eye on his situation and it was previously claimed by TEAMtalk that Everton, Roma, and Lazio are keen on the gem, who would cost a fee in the region of £25m.

Cashing in on Gnonto could allow Farke to invest in another forward and this could, therefore, open the door for a swoop for Akturkoglu, who could come in as the manager's new version of Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville's season in numbers

The Dutch forward has been in terrific form so far this season in the Championship and has proven to be a reliable attacking outlet for his side.

Summerville managed four goals and two assists in 28 Premier League appearances for Leeds during the 2022/23 campaign as they were relegated to the second tier.

The 22-year-old has been able to use that top-flight experience to become a superstar for the Whites with his electric performances this term.

Leeds duo Daniel Farke and Crysencio Summerville.

He has spearheaded Farke's attack on the left wing and has been one of the best players in the entire division, with his average Sofascore rating of 7.89 topping the league ahead of the likes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Gabriel Sara, and ex-Leeds forward Jack Clarke.

Summerville is currently third in the league for goals (ten), only behind Sammie Szmodics and Adam Armstrong, and is joint-fifth for assists (six), as it stands.

Summerville's 2023/24 statistics.

The impressive left-winger, who has created ten 'big chances' for his teammates, is also top of the Leeds squad for key passes (3.1) and dribbles completed (2.7) per game so far this season in the Championship.

These statistics show that the Dutch wizard has the quality to make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch week-in-week-out with his ability as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

He provides variety in his game that makes it difficult for defenders to stop him as Summerville can just as easily dribble on the outside to create a chance for a teammate as he can dribble inside to open up space for himself to score.

The statistics that show why Akturkoglu could be Summerville 2.0

Farke could now land his next version of the Leeds star by securing a deal ahead of Lazio to land Akturkoglu's signature before the end of next month.

The 25-year-old whiz, who can play out wide on either flank, has been in sublime form for Galatasaray since the start of last season and has the potential to offer similar qualities to Summerville in the final third.

He is a winger who has the ability to contribute with goals and assists at an impressive rate, which could make him a fantastic addition to the squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Galatasaray forward Kerem Akturkoglu.

Last term, Akturkoglu racked up nine goals, 11 assists, and 17 'big chances' created in 34 Turkish Super Lig outings for Galatasaray.

The exciting dynamo has followed that up with a return of four goals, five assists, and 11 'big chances' created in 13 Super Lig starts so far during the 2023/24 campaign.

This means that the Turkey international, who was once described as “unstoppable” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has produced 13 goals, 16 assists, and created 28 'big chances' in his last 47 league outings, which highlights how productive he is at the top end of the pitch.

The Whites target is a right-footed winger, who can play on either side, and has the quality to score and assist goals at an eye-catching rate, just like Farke's current superstar on the left flank.

Akturkoglu has made 2.9 key passes per game for his teammates this season and only Summerville (3.1) has managed more than that within the Leeds squad.

These statistics all indicate that the 5 foot 8 Turkish sensation could be a phenomenal addition to the club if he is able to translate those performances over to English football, due to the impact he could have on matches with his attacking contributions.
