Newcastle striker who was sold for just £1.7m is now outscoring Wilson

Newcastle United are in critical condition at the moment, with 13 players currently sidelined through injuries and suspensions ahead of some huge games after the international break, including a colossal European bout away at French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Eddie Howe's attack has been massacred over the past few weeks, with the likes of Alexander Isak, Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson, Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy all out for the foreseeable future.

The Magpies don't have a recognised striker who is fit and available right now, having had to deploy Anthony Gordon down the middle at the weekend in a toothless 2-0 defeat away at Bournemouth.

The absence of both Isak and Wilson has further highlighted Newcastle's mistakes in player sales from the past, including one man who is having a fine season down in the division below.

Why Adam Armstrong left Newcastle

Adam Armstrong came through Newcastle United's academy as a youngster and rose through the ranks at Darsley Park to make his debut in a 1-0 defeat to Fulham in the Premier League back in 2014.

However, after a quartet of loan spells at Coventry City, Barnsley, Bolton Wanderers and finally Blackburn Rovers, the attacker was sold to the latter for just £1.7m, having never scored a single goal for his boyhood club in 21 appearances.

After a fruitful time at Ewood Park, where he bagged 64 goals and 19 assists in 160 matches for the Riversiders, Armstrong made the next big move in his career, signing for Premier League outfit Southampton for a fee in the region of £15m.

Despite the Saints being relegated last term, the 26-year-old is still banging in the goals, sitting second in the Championship charts with nine from 16 matches in the second tier.

Amid Newcastle's injury woes up top, selling Armstrong looks like a potential mistake in hindsight.

Armstrong's stats this season

In 53 appearances for Southampton in the top flight over the course of two seasons, Armstrong scored merely four league goals. This term, he has already more than doubled his previous tally and has found the net more often than both Isak and Wilson who have scored seven goals apiece.

Armstrong has also been utilised in a number of different positions this season, having played on the right wing and even in the centre of midfield at one point, registering three assists for the Saints, according to WhoScored.

Despite his impressive goalscoring form at the St. Mary's Stadium, Armstrong's manager at Southampton, Russell Martin, believes the attacker "has yet to get going" in terms of the heights he is capable of reaching.

Southampton forward Adam Armstrong.

This season, Armstrong is taking fewer shots than his Newcastle United counterparts each game, averaging 2.72 shots per 90 down in the Championship to Isak's 3.11 and Wilson's 3.53 in the Premier League to supplement just how red hot he's been in front of goal.

Furthermore, Armstrong has a worse shot-on-target percentage than Howe's two strikers with 36.6% to the Swede's 58.8% and Wilson's 63.2%. Essentially, the Southampton star is taking fewer shots and boasting fewer on target but has a better goal return than Newcastle's frontmen.

Isak and Wilson are scoring in a much more difficult division but Howe could certainly have benefitted from having someone like Armstrong in his squad amidst a plague of injury problems.

Siriwardene's allround performance knocks Bangladesh out

The veteran allrounder batted through till the end of the innings in a low-scoring innings, and bowled economically as Bangladesh played meekly in their chase

Varun Shetty14-Nov-2018Sri Lanka kept their semi-final prospects alive in Group A with a comprehensive win over Bangladesh that they would not have counted on at the halfway mark. Put into bat, they managed only 97 from their 20 overs, thanks mostly to former captain Shashikala Siriwardene’s 31. The allrounder batted until the last over of an innings that never found momentum, and returned figures of 4-0-10-2 as Asia Cup winners Bangladesh surrendered early in the chase against their regional rivals. It was Jahanara Alam who had given them a strong chance once again. The seamer managed to utilise the conditions right from the first ball, getting an outswinger to curve back at Yasoda Mendis’ toes and roll onto leg stump. This made it appear like the strategy to not open with Chamari Atapattu would not make much of a difference. But Sri Lanka chose to promote wicketkeeper Dilani Manodara to No. 3.But Alam and the spinners gave away nothing to her or to makeshift opener Hasini Perera, and the Powerplay score of 17 for 1 wasn’t wildly different from what they’d managed against South Africa two days ago. And the batting experiment looked even worse as Sri Lanka fell to 30 for 3 in nine overs, that third wicket a complete mess with Manodara and Atapattu at the same end as Bangladesh got rid of the former at the other.Atapattu and Siriwardene pushed the pace over the next two overs, but with the captain’s top edge and dismissal in the 13th over, another experiment had failed. With the big hitters all gone early, Siriwardene was left with the lower middle-order, using her experience to manoeuvre the gaps on an outfield that was still reeling under the effects of rain that has affected the entire week. She hit two fours and a six, most of which came late in her innings, and fell with two balls to go. Alam, once again, cut short any momentum Siriwardene wanted to provide, and followed it up with her third wicket to stop Sri Lanka from getting to three figures. At the toss, Sri Lanka had wanted 120, and Bangladesh had wanted to restrict them to 120; but Sri Lanka fell 23 short of their target and Bangladesh fell 25 short of that. Such was the shock from left-arm seamer Udeshika Prabodhani’s two wickets in the first over, that Bangladesh looked like they had decided not to attempt any attacking shots. It was the chase of an inexperienced side, and that was visible with the first ball. Sanjida Islam received a poor decision from umpire Jacqueline Williams, being struck well outside off stump, but Ayasha Rahman was not alive to the situation and the review was not taken.Three balls later, Fargana Hoque did review, but her 50-50 lbw decision was deemed umpire’s call, the tracker showing the ball brushing leg stump. Prabodhani continued tormenting them with inswingers, but went off in the fifth over when she dropped a return catch and seemingly split the webbing between middle and ring finger. They wouldn’t need her though. The Sri Lanka spinners took charge, using the wind to drift the ball menacingly away, lobbing it slower and slower at the batsmen. Most of them defended for the most part, two of them looked to drill it through the off side only to be caught at short extra cover, and the occasional slogs didn’t go too far on a sluggish pitch. At the halfway stage, Bangladesh hadn’t even made 30, and their lack of intent made it evident they weren’t getting anywhere close to the target. In all, they hit three boundaries, and played 75 dot balls, the kind of batting performance that fits with an early exit from a major tournament.

Klopp could hand Liverpool’s bigger talent than Doak one last chance

Liverpool are currently nurturing the most exciting crop of youth talent that the club has boasted for a very long time, and manager Jurgen Klopp will be eager to bring some more to the first team over the next few years.

Of course, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones are important members of Klopp's system and both made their debuts under the German's leadership, but genuine prospects were few and far between before the recent improvements.

The Premier League giants currently have the likes of Ben Doak, Stefan Bajcetic and Jarell Quansah wedging their way into Klopp's plans, but there are a wealth of options awaiting a chance just below the surface, with perhaps none more gifted than Mateusz Musialowski.

Mateusz Musialowski's style of play

Take one glance at Musialowski's highlight reel, and you might shake your head incredulously as you try to understand why Klopp has yet to hand this mercurial star his first-team debut.

Alas, for all Musialowski's innate ability, questions have been raised regarding his off-the-ball activity, and after plundering 26 goals contributions across his first two campaigns in England, he scored just twice last season, falling out of favour in the penultimate year of his contract.

Liverpool signed the Pole from SMS Lodz in 2020 and he has since gone on to captivate onlookers with his tricks and skills, though inconsistency and his purported attitude have alienated him from contention for a senior call-up.

There is a chance that the player of "ridiculous" quality – as he has been praised by reporter Lewis Bower – might be salvaging his chances of a breakthrough, with the 20-year-old currently enjoying the most fruitful form of his budding career.

Indeed, this season Musialowski has posted six goals and two assists from just eight appearances, having scored across all three of Liverpool's ventures in the EFL Trophy against senior opposition.

While Musialowski's future is very much up in the air right now – it seemed he was certain to leave Merseyside this summer – his recent form has been the best way to prove his worth, and he might even be the most naturally talented player within the academy ranks.

How Mateusz Musialowski compares to Ben Doak

Hailed as "excellent" by Andy Kelly, Musialowski might even be more gifted than Doak, though the flourishing Scotsman's dynamism, athleticism and work-rate have won him a position in Klopp's senior set-up.

Indeed, Doak has made nine senior appearances for Liverpool and has earned shots from the outset in the Europa League and the Carabao Cup.

Dubbed a "prodigy” by reporter Keifer MacDonald, the 18-year-old is a swashbuckling, breakneck winger with a low centre of gravity to allow him to swivel and weave through the lines, and there is a chance that he will emerge as one of the Premier League's forwards in the years to come.

Ben Doak for Liverpool.

Doak has scored 11 goals and supplied eight assists from just 27 matches for Liverpool's youth sides, though given the prolificness of Musialowski right now, there must be a feeling that he could transport his qualities to the senior stage with careful management over the coming months.

Doak's application and determination have won him a place in Klopp's plans, and if his Polish counterpart can ramp up the gas in that department a bit, he may well lead a successful career down the line.

Newcastle could sign a bigger talent than Joelinton for £34m

Last week, Premier League clubs voted against banning loan moves between affiliated clubs in the aftermath of Newcastle United being linked with signing Ruben Neves in January, having left Wolves for £47m in January.

13 teams in the top flight voted in favour of the ban while seven rejected its premises. One of the seven contrarian voters were Newcastle, which may not have come as a surprise to many people as the Magpies are currently owned by the PIF which also has a majority stake in some of Saudi Arabia's biggest clubs; Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, and Al-Ahli.

Nevertheless, the striking down of the proposal has opened the door for Newcastle to dip into the Saudi Pro League market in January and head coach Eddie Howe has his sights set on one player in particular.

Gabri Veiga to Newcastle links

Speaking on the Premier League All-Access Podcast, journalist Alex Crook revealed that Newcastle United have turned their attention away from signing Neves and could well reignite interest in Gabri Veiga.

The Magpies were keen to secure Veiga's services during the summer but were pipped to his signature by Al-Ahli who activated the midfielder's £34m release clause.

gabri-veiga-celta-vigo-premier-league-chelsea-transfers

Veiga broke onto the scene two years ago with his boyhood club Celta Vigo and came to the forefront of the minds of many elite clubs in Europe, especially after scoring 11 goals in 36 appearances in his first full campaign.

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti even hailed the youngster as being an "excellent" player, while Premier League outfit Arsenal were reportedly looking to sign the Spain international to replace the outgoing Granit Xhaka last season.

Regardless, Al-Ahli pipped all suitors to the signing of Veiga, handing the 21-year-old a three-year deal worth £10.4m per year. However, Veiga could be on the move already, with Newcastle set to come calling this winter.

How Gabri Veiga compares with Joelinton

Veiga has featured 12 times in all competitions for Al-Ahli this term and has scored once and registered two assists in the process, while featuring as a central midfielder, a holding midfielder and a number '10', according to Transfermarkt.

The Spaniard hasn't contributed to many goals under the guidance of 35-year-old head coach Matthias Jaissle but has still been a key component for the side who are currently sitting third in the league this term.

The former Celta man could be the perfect player to ease Joelinton out of the side if Howe can get his hands on the talented midfielder. In fact, Veiga even outperformed Joelinton in a number of key metrics last term when the pair were both plying their trades in Europe.

Newcastle have transitioned from a side battling to survive in the Premier League to one vying for titles and a place in Europe's elite club contest but the Magpies still boast just the ninth-highest possession average in the top flight with 53.2%, as per FBref.

Eventually, Howe will want his side to become more dominant on the ball and players like Veiga are a necessity for this.

While Joelinton is statistically more efficient defensively, Veiga trumped the Brazilian on several fronts, particularly in playmaking, despite being six years younger than his potential future teammate. Evidently, Veiga has a massive ceiling and could be the perfect player for the Geordie club to make the step to the next level.

Galle up for grabs as spinners prepare to take centre stage

Rangana Herath prepares to play his final Test, as England size up a number of potential debutants on a surface that’s bound to favour spin

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando in Galle05-Nov-2018Big PictureIt’s Galle. It’s going to spin. Given it is Rangana Herath’s final Test and England are the opposition, it might spin like crazy. Unfortunately, it also looks as if it’s going to rain, at least for parts of the Test. The weather forecast is for thunderstorms, generally in the afternoons. That doesn’t mean we won’t get a result, of course. None of the last 21 Tests in Sri Lanka have ended in draws. Many of those had had to contend with the weather as well.England cruised through the limited-overs series, but in Tests, where Sri Lanka have been a more robust opposition, particularly at home, there are many more questions that the visitors will have to answer. Is Rory Burns, essentially Alastair Cook’s replacement at the top of the order, ready for a challenge as great as defusing some of the best spinners in the world, on a pitch that is one of the most treacherous? In fact, save for Joe Root and Ben Stokes, who are reputed to be decent players of spin, England’s entire top order seems a little frail;. Keaton Jennings hit 112 on debut in Mumbai, then 54 in Chennai a week later, but those matches were two years ago, and there has not been an encouraging volume of runs since then. Jos Buttler averages 23.5 in Asia, even if it is possible he is a much improved batsman in these conditions since he last toured the continent. The injury to Jonny Bairstow has further weakened England – though it is a huge opportunity for Ben Foakes, who is in line for a Test debut. None of the top eight, in any case, have ever played a Test in Sri Lanka before. The hosts’ approach over the past few years has been fairly straightforward on the difficult pitches at home. Attack the spinners and attempt to unsettle them early. Score your runs quickly, before the inevitable good ball gets you out. A score of 300 here could be worth as many as 450 on most other tracks in the world, particularly given the tenacity with which Sri Lanka’s two senior spinners – Herath and Dilruwan Perera – defend scores at this venue. As always, the first-innings score is crucial – if England can get themselves to a creditable score, they not only set themselves up nicely in this Test, they gain the belief that they can crack these conditions going into Kandy and Colombo. South Africa, the last team on these shores in July, began badly, skidding to 126 in their first outing, and proceeded to crash even more dramatically in subsequent innings – their batsmen unable to lift themselves out of a psychological rut. England’s technique is sure to be tested, but if Sri Lanka play well, so will their mettle.Form guideSri Lanka WWWDL (completed matches, most recent first)
England WWLWWIn the spotlightLost in all the buzz about Herath, has been the return of Angelo Mathews to the Sri Lanka team. Feelings had clearly been hurt during his axing from the limited-overs sides, as you would expect. The relationship with coach Chandika Hathurusingha, in particular, had soured. But perhaps the message has been received. He is back looking noticeably leaner. He has also begun to bowl in the nets, even if it is unlikely he will do so in this series. A fit, performing Mathews at No. 5 turns this half-decent Sri Lanka top order into a pretty good one. But it remains to be seen whether the bruises sustained following the Asia Cup debacle have healed enough for him to be able to focus on his cricket.Adil Rashid has had a strange year. Having announced he would not play red-ball cricket for Yorkshire, he found himself picked for the home Tests against India, but was called upon in short, irregular bursts throughout that series. Now, suddenly, he is required to lead England’s attack in what is perhaps the spin-bowling capital of the world. Is he equipped to deliver in the long format? His numbers in Asia are not particularly encouraging. He took 23 wickets across a five-match Test series in India, but his average was a mediocre 37.43, and he also went at 3.7 an over. In the UAE, where the Kookaburra ball is used – just as in Sri Lanka – and where pitches are more like the ones found on the island, Rashid’s figures are even worse – though he did claim a second-innings five-for on debut in Abu Dhabi, having conceded a chastening 0 for 163 first-time out. It is possible that his confidence from excellent performances in the limited-overs series will flow into his Test game, but that is not a given. Plenty of foreign spinners have prospered in Sri Lanka in ODIs. Not many have had the same success in Tests.Team newsThere are a lot of unknowns with this England XI. Will Moeen Ali bat at No. 3 or lower down the order? Burns is almost certain to get a Test debut, and Foakes is likely to join him with Jos Buttler playing as a specialist batsman, meaning that Joe Denly may have to wait for his chance later in the series. They are likely to play three spinners as well.England (possible): 1 Rory Burns, 2 Keaton Jennings, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Joe Root (capt.), 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Buttler, 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Sam Curran, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Jack Leach, 11 James AndersonSri Lanka will almost certainly play three spinners themselves. Dhananjaya de Silva might take the lower-order spot over Roshen Silva, who has been a little out of form in recent months. Opener Kaushal Silva will return to the XI for the first time in over a year. Lahiru Kumara, who had been in the 16-man squad for the series, has been dropped for disciplinary reasons. Dushmantha Chameera comes in as his replacement.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Kaushal Silva, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (capt.) 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 7 Dhananjaya de Silva, 8 Dilruwan Perera, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Akila Dananjaya, 11 Rangana HerathPitch and conditionsThe pitch looks dry to start with and, given the wind blowing across the ground, is likely to dry further very quickly over the first three days. Rain is forecast for the first two days in particular, and there are likely to be interruptions.Stats and trivia No other nation has ever hosted 21 result Tests consecutively. The last draw in Sri Lanka was against South Africa at Colombo in July 2014. Rashid’s recent Test form is much better than his overall numbers. He has taken 10 wickets at 30.9 this year. Mathews’ Test form in recent years has been modest. He averages 28.59 across 37 innings since the start of 2016. These teams have played four matches in Galle. Sri Lanka have won two of those, and two – in 2003, and 2007 – have been draws.Quotes”We’ve got a very balanced squad with plenty of different options. Whichever XI we go with, we’re going to be blessed with that. From that point of view I feel we’ll be very well prepared for whatever surface is thrown at us.”England captain Joe Root“When you look at the Test records in the last couple of years, both teams are equal. When you’re playing in Sri Lanka, definitely the spinners will come into play. Maybe because of that, we are a little ahead of England.”Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal
