Bell hammers first T20 hundred as record stand salvages tie

Ian Bell’s rejuvenation continued with his first T20 hundred as Birmingham escaped a third successive defeat in a high-scoring tie against winless Northants

ScorecardBirmingham Bears and Northants Steelbacks fought out a thrilling tie as runs flowed in the Vitality Blast at Edgbaston – with Ian Bell to the fore as he struck his first T20 hundred.Despite conceding 229 and 220, having bowled first, in their last two games, Birmingham chose to bowl first again – and the Steelbacks piled up 231 for 5.Richard Levi smashed an unbeaten 95 (52 balls, eight fours, six sixes), during which he passed 5,000 T20 runs, and Josh Cobb struck 61 from 35 balls. But Birmingham replied with 231 for 5 of their own as Bell smote 131 from 62 balls and Adam Hose hit 64. They shared a world record T20 third-wicket stand of 171 from 85 balls and kept their side within sight of a spectacular victory.Ten runs were required from the last over – and nine came to leave honours even. The Steelbacks started at a gallop with openers Levi and Ben Duckett clobbering 40 from 19 balls. Duckett edged behind at the start of a wicket-maiden from Boyd Rankin but Levi, reprieved on 22 when he was caught at deep square leg off an Aaron Thomason no ball, took with particular relish to former team-mate Olly Stone. He thrashed 18 from four balls in Stone’s first over and 28, including four sixes, when the paceman returned to bowl the ninth. Cobb pulled Grant Elliott over the Hollies Stand and the second-wicket stand yielded 129 in 70 balls before Cobb lifted Thomason to deep mid-wicket.Alex Wakely and Rory Kleinweldt kept the momentum high and Levi began the last over needing ten to reach his fourth T20 century. He found just five of them but walked off knowing his team were in a mighty position. They strengthened that position with two early wickets as Ed Pollock lifted Nathan Buck to mid-off and San Hain chipped a slower ball from Kleinweldt to extra cover.Bell and Hose batted steadily at first then gradually increased the tempo until they were parted by an unfortunate run out. When Bell was coolly caught right on the extra-cover rope by Procter the pendulum swung back the Steelbacks’ way but 21 needed from the last two overs became ten from the last.Nathan Buck kept his nerve to bowl a good final over and, rather cruelly after delivering such rich entertainment, both teams had to settle for a point. For Northants, still seeking their first win, the wait goes on.

Rangers to offer another new deal to "top class" gem; he’s impressed

With new manager Philippe Clement set to take charge of his first game since taking charge of Rangers, which comes against Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership, the Gers have been focusing part of their attention on making sure that things go to plan off the pitch. It's undoubtedly a transitional period at Ibrox following the tenure of Michael Beale, who failed to make an impact in Scotland.

Under Clement, Rangers will hope to return to the heights that Steven Gerrard once climbed to, even with Celtic already sitting seven points clear at the top of the league. Despite their poor start to the season, however, one particular player is set to be offered a deserved reward.

Latest Rangers contract news

Glasgow Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

Whilst the transfer window doesn't open until January – limiting Clement's options when it comes to reinforcements – Rangers can at least ensure the futures of certain stars already at the club. And the latest Borna Barisic update suggests that the left-back is among those to be offered a new contract at the club, with his current deal coming to an end next summer. The Croatian is one of the more experienced players at Ibrox these days, which could be crucial for Clement.

Meanwhile, more Rangers contract news has seen reports of another player set to be offered a new deal. According to Fabrizio Romano, Ross McCausland is set to be offered a new contract, which will see him remain at the club beyond 2024. The winger has featured in Rangers' last two games, impressing in the process, and clearly doing enough to ensure his future at Ibrox.

At just 20-years-old, McCausland will be hoping to pick up where he left off after the international break, continuing his rise into the first-team, in what is a fresh start for every player under Clement.

Who is Ross McCausland?

Coming through the Rangers academy, McCausland has been one of few positives at Rangers this season, making an appearance in both the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League. Prior to those big moments, the 20-year-old also featured in the Challenge Cup, where McCausland's stats were impressive, with one goal and one assist to his name in three games.

Now under Clement, he has the chance to impress once more, and if he can break into the new manager's plans as soon as possible, then it could be a big season for the winger.

Rangers B coach David McCallum is certainly a fan of McCausland, too, having previously told the club's official website: "You can see what Ross has got in talent, two goals tonight that were top class. But he’s not the only one. Everyone has that challenge to try to get to a level that makes the first team talk about them. We’re here to get (youth players) to the level that gets the first team staff to think of them and it’s up to that player to try to get ahead of who is already there. That’s not an easy challenge. It shouldn’t be when you’re at Rangers.”

Sanjay Bangar praises India's batsmen for technical changes

There is still time for India to get back into this series and their batting coach believes the top order may have turned a corner

Nagraj Gollapudi at Trent Bridge18-Aug-20181:06

India left the ball better than they have done – Woakes

Adjustments to individual techniques coupled with the focus and discipline of the India batsmen were the key to them ending the first day in a good position, according to batting coach Sanjay Bangar, who believed it could be a turning point for the batting line-upFraught techniques, weak application, inappropriate shot selection and lack of partnerships were identified as reasons for the failure of all the India specialist batsmen, barring Virat Kohli, over the first two Tests. It meant the team think tank were forced to ring in changes, which further exacerbated the issue. However, asked to bat by England captain Joe Root on a slow and dry pitch, India’s batsmen showed patience, composure and a renewed vigour and the first impact was the 60-run opening partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul.”The most important thing was the opening partnership was according to our expectation,” Bangar said. “In the previous two Tests we were losing two or three wickets inside the first 15 overs. Because of that the middle order was walking in early in difficult conditions. It was not just the start but also the way they were batting was good.”The adjustments were subtle and Bangar gave a few examples: Dhawan tinkered with his bat speed, Rahul waited for the ball to come, Ajinkya Rahane used his feet more to play strokes confidently.”The way Shikhar made the changes to his batting, the way he reduced his bat speed, the way he played the ball later, these adjustments he made in the last six or seven days, he should get credit. KL Rahul, too, was playing on the back foot, he was reacting after the ball’s movement. These changes the batsmen have made make me hopeful for the rest of the series. With five more innings left, if our batsmen can play in the same way, their performance graph will carry on to improve.”All India’s batsmen played shots more in front of square, both on the front and the back foot. At Edgbaston, the they played a total of 94 balls in front of square. At Lord’s that came down to 68. In this third Test, already that count stands at 80.Anotther significant difference was the batsmen were committed to scoring unlike the rut they found themselves in the first two Tests. Bangar said the batting group was conscious of the fast outfield at Trent Bridge.”We all realise that the outfield is very, very fast here in Nottingham. So you get value for your shots. Because the ball is swinging, the way it has been, you always have a lot of players in catching positions. It leaves big gaps in the field, so if you get bat on ball, time it well, there is always value for… I don’t think any side can control run rate here beyond a certain limit because value for shots, it is a fast outfield, anybody timing the ball will get value for shots.”The backbone of the India innings was the 159-run fourth-wicket partnership between Kohli and Rahane although both batsmen missed out on centuries. Nonetheless, the significant bit was Rahane finding form with his first half-century in 14 Test innings.”His mindset was very clear,” Bangar said. “He was very positive, his feet were moving well. He was getting into good positions…at times there can be a lapse in concentration which can lead to losing your wicket, which had happened in the previous Test. But he seemed to be in good nick and he capitalised, put us in a good position and he would be hurting because a big score was on the cards.”

Spurs could sign £30m "magician" who’s outperforming Maddison in January

As Tottenham Hotspur's performances on the pitch grow, so too does the importance of cementing the newfound stature with influential additions.

Ange Postecoglou has not been in London for long but he has already made his presence known, rekindling Tottenham's incentive and inspiration, nurturing talented players back to their best form and astutely identifying players capable of making a marked impact on the transfer front, then swiftly pouncing.

Are the Lilywhites back? Is Postecoglou to be the manager to end an interminable trophy drought, placing Spurs on a pedestal among Europe's best? Perhaps. But such questions are best left to speculation at this stage.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

What matters is that the dark clouds that roiled over the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are no more, with Spurs now fighting at the forefront of the Premier League pack, currently perched in second place after ten matches, with Postecoglou's men playing host to Chelsea on Monday night.

It is crucial that Tottenham's trip to the front of the pack does not turn out to be a sojourn, and for all of the excitement surrounding the feats of the first-team, there is perhaps a sense of trepidation regarding a detrimental injury to a James Maddison, a Heung-min Son or a Cristian Romero.

This is why Postecoglou is so eager to bolster his side in January, urging Daniel Levy and the club officials to not throw caution to the mind and rely on the existing fold, who need support.

As such, the London side would be wise to seriously consider acting on interest in Celtic star Matt O'Riley, who would be an excellent addition and the perfect foil for Maddison in the creative midfield role.

Tottenham transfer news – Matt O'Riley

Earlier this week, TEAMtalk revealed that Tottenham are among the suitors for O'Riley, who is attracting the attention of a plethora of Premier League sides after his captivating performances for the Hoops.

West Ham United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford are all listed as rival suitors, and while Spurs boast one of the finest playmakers in Europe in Maddison, it would be a prudent move to bolster with some exciting competition.

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

The Glasgow club will demand a ballpark figure of £30m for his departure from Celtic Park, having cemented his stature as one of the Scottish Premiership's most exciting talents, indeed carrying his performances over into the Champions League too.

The report describes Tottenham's monitoring of his situation and the fact that Postecoglou, Celtic's former boss, could entice the 22-year-old into making the trip down south to London.

Matt O'Riley's style of play

O'Riley has been a menace in midfield for Celtic over the past few seasons, having posted 14 goals and 21 assists from 87 outings since signing from MK Dons for a bargain £1.5m plus add-ons in 2022, since carrying over his level of performance into the current campaign, hence attracting such impressive attention.

As per Sofascore, the former Fulham youngster has been in stunning form this season, taking 2.8 shots and creating 2.7 key passes per game in the Scottish Premiership, completing 83% of his passes and making 7.2 ball recoveries per outing, heralded as a “magician” by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

He would offer a similar kind of threat to one that Spurs already offer in Maddison, but this would deepen the pool in what could prove to be a masterful signing from Postecoglou.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

Last year, the dynamic gem proved his worth and then some with constancy in his supplementation in Scotland, scoring four times and serving 14 assists for Celtic.

This season, O'Riley has scored six goals and supplied five assists across all competitions – impressing after serving goals in Champions League ties against Lazio and Atletico Madrid – which actually means that he is outperforming Tottenham's star man Maddison this season.

How Matt O'Riley compares to James Maddison

Levy signed Maddison from relegated Leicester City for £40m in the summer, with the 26-year-old impressing despite the Foxes' demise last year, posting ten goals and nine assists from 28 starting appearances in the Premier League.

So far for this new side, Maddison has been utterly magnificent and has scored three goals and provided five assists from 11 outings, earning the Premier League Player of the Month award in August.

As per FBref, the £170k-per-week phenom ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 1% for shot-creating actions and the top 4% for progressive passes per 90, underscoring his stunning faculty for creative assistance.

Clearly, Maddison is performing at a higher level than O'Riley right now but it is interesting to see that the Celtic player is surpassing his direct contributions.

Maddison's game is not too dissimilar to O'Riley's however, with the Spurs star taking 2.8 shots and 3.2 key passes per game and completing 85% of his passes, as per Sofacore; because of this, Postecoglou could alternate between the two and maintain his squad's flow and efficacy in attacking movements while not draining either player's fitness levels.

micky-van-de-ven-james-maddison-tottenham-opinion

Maddison has transformed the overall fluidity and attacking verve of this Tottenham team and will expect to serve as the focal point for years to come, but to assume that the England international can carry the creative burden alone as the club targets a return to European competition and starts to push for silverware would be ludicrous.

In O'Riley, Tottenham would sign a player to create the kind of depth that fuels such lofty ambitions and would signal a real statement of intent and an affirmation that this is no mere purple patch.

Whether Tottenham are willing to spend £30m on the future Denmark international at the season's midpoint, with reinforcements required across the park, is another question.

But Postecoglou knows the player and will be interested in initiating a reunion, and if he truly values his ability, the Australian will not allow the Celtic star to fall into enemy clutches.

Barroca 'reintegra' afastados e ganha novas opções no time do Botafogo

Veja a tabela do Brasileirão!

Marnus Labuschagne's incredible juggle sets scene for Australia

He used hands, body and knee before clasping the ball to his chest to take an extraordinary catch at short leg in the third over of the Test

An extraordinary juggling catch at short leg by Marnus Labuschagne recalled classic efforts by Mark Taylor and David Boon while setting the scene for a dominant morning for Australia in the second Test against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi. The Test was only three overs old when Mohammad Hafeez flicked a straight delivery from Mitchell Starc in Labuschagne’s direction, whereupon the two-Test old batsman juggled the ball off hands, body and knee, before ultimately clasping the chance to his chest. In claiming the catch, Labuschagne drew comparisons with a famous take by Taylor at slip against West Indies in 1996 at the SCG, where Carl Hooper’s outside edge from the bowling of Michael Bevan hit the then-Australian captain’s hands and floppy hat as he fell backwards, before he kicked the rebound up with his right boot to claim the catch.Another effort, also at the SCG, included Boon’s juggle, when standing fractionally back from the bat of Mohammed Azharuddin in 1992, he knocked the ball up with his left hand before claiming it with both. Labuschagne’s first moment in Test cricket was as a substitute fielder at the Gabba in 2014, where he took a diving chance off Nathan Lyon against India. While Labuschagne would later drop a more straightforward chance at midwicket off the bowling of Jon Holland, he claimed another chance at short leg amid Lyon’s shattering spell of four wickets in six balls to tilt the Test decidedly towards Australia on what appears to be a decent surface for batting.Nathan Lyon, among the first to rush in and celebrate the catch with Labuschagne, related the humorous tale of the fielder trying to say he meant to catch it the way he did. “I was at point. That’s one of those ones that can change a game,” Lyon said. “But I just love the way he told me that he went with the catch without realising that it hit him before he moved. It’s one of those things, it just happens.”You don’t train for those. Sorry Marnus, but you don’t train for them. He’ll tell you that he knew what he was doing, but it hit him in the groin and just got stuck between his legs, so Mohammad Hafeez is very unlucky.”More praise came Labuschange’s way for how his hustling wrist spin was utilised to claim three wickets, after Sarfraz Ahmed and the debutant Fakhar Zaman had built a fine, counterattacking partnership. “You see that with a lot of leg-spinners,” Lyon said. “They’ve got different ways of taking wickets.”But I thought the way Marnus has come on and done his job for the side over the last two games with the ball, I think he’s an exciting little player. I’ve got big hopes for him, big wraps on him. He’s a lovely guy, I’m a big fan of him. So if he can keep improving the way he’s bowling, and trying to bowl his best ball every ball day in day out, I think he’s got a big future.”
