England aim to ram home advantage

While England are riding a wave of momentum after a thumping win, Sri Lanka’s woes are compounded as they are left sweating over the fitness of Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal

The Preview by Andrew McGlashan25-Jun-2016Match factsJune 26, 2016
Start time 1030 local (0930 GMT)Big PictureEoin Morgan demanded improvement from his England side after they escaped with a last-ball tie in the opening ODI of the series. He got it in no uncertain terms at Edgbaston. Accurate bowling, and a lively fielding display, was followed by a dominant, free-wheeling opening stand as Alex Hales and Jason Roy plundered the record books in a 10-wicket victory. The turnaround is now swift to the third match; a chance for England to carry their surge forward in Bristol, and an opportunity for Sri Lanka to quickly dust themselves off. But things are threatening to unravel for Angelo Mathews’ side after seeing a victory slip away and then his team dominated in all three departments.Too much in Sri Lanka’s batting is currently resting on the shoulders of Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal – to add to the problems that pair are also under an injury cloud having both suffered hamstring problems. Upul Tharanga’s breezy fifty at No. 7 at Edgbaston suggested he may be wasted down in the middle order.England, having shaken off the rust from the opening match, will be aiming to ram home their advantage and take an unbeatable lead in the series, although, let it not be forgotten, that the Super Series has already been secured. At the beginning of the series, the question of balance, in the absence of Ben Stokes, was a significant talking point, and at Trent Bridge, there were times when the lack of another main bowling option looked a problem. However, at Edgbaston, Joe Root’s three overs escaped with little punishment, while Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid conceded just 75 in 19 overs between them.Form guideEngland WTLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka LTWWLIn the spotlight20-0-70-2: those are handy figures for Adil Rashid over the first two matches of the series. The legspinner has shown outstanding control when thrown the ball, bowling both his spells straight through to ensure Sri Lanka struggled to build much of a tempo to their innings. In both games, he has been helped by the early wickets nicked out by the pacemen, but the impressive factor in Rashid’s performances has been the lack of the really loose deliveries. There will still be days when it does not go so well for him, but he is a bowler increasingly capable of responding to the pressure.Upul Tharanga has played 156 of his 176 ODI innings as an opening batsman. He has 13 hundreds to his name – putting him fifth on Sri Lanka’s all-time list – albeit just one of them has come since a stellar 2011 in which he scored four. Sri Lanka have lost early wickets in both matches so far, and it would surely be worthwhile considering using Tharanga in the position he has forged for the majority of his career.Teams newsThere would appear to be little need for England to change anything after such a resounding victory, unless there is a desire to rotate anyone.England (probable) 1 Alex Hales, 2 Jason Roy, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 David Willey, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 Adil RashidChandimal followed Mathews in picking up a hamstring problem at Edgbaston and did not keep wicket in the second half of the match. Both players will undergo fitness tests on Sunday morning. Keeping options is one thing Sri Lanka are not short of, but they can ill-afford to lose Chandimal’s batting. Mathews did not move freely when batting and was unable to bowl.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Danushka Gunathilaka, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Upul Tharanga, 7 Seekkuge Prasanna, 7 Suraj Randiv, 9 Farveez Maharoof, 10 Nuwan Pradeep, 11 Suranga LakmalPitch and conditionsThe most recent Royal London Cup match at this ground produced 694 runs in 100 overs. The forecast is not entirely promising, with rain due to move in during the afternoon after a bright start.Stats and trivia England have played in Bristol nine times. The most recent match, against India in 2014, was abandoned without a ball bowled. Overall, they have won three and lost five. Since the second ODI against Pakistan, in Abu Dhabi in November, 2015, Alex Hales has scored 681 runs at 75.67 in 10 innings. Liam Plunkett needs one wicket to reach 50 in ODIsQuotes”A lot of hard work goes into batting, and a lot of emotions. So once those runs came to me, it all came out. It will be interesting to see my celebration – because I don’t really know what happened.”
“We have to try to flush it out of the system and forget about this game as quickly as possible – because we’ve got only one day to come back and play pretty well.”

T20 Records blown away by a Gayle Storm

Chris Gayle struck his 18th T20 century, an unbeaten 54-ball 108 with six fours and 11 sixes, to help Jamaica Tallawahs hunt down their target of 192 against Trinbago Knight Riders in Port-of-Spain. The win propelled Tallawahs to the top of the table, while Knight Riders slumped to their third loss in four games.Tallawahs’ chase began slowly, with openers Gayle and Chadwick Walton adding 29 in 35 balls. At the end of the Powerplay, Gayle was on a run-a-ball 17. Kumar Sangakkara brought the required impetus with a brisk 20, but his dismissal left Tallawahs needing 121 off the last 10 overs. However, Gayle laid into the bowlers thereafter, as Tallawahs plundered 71 off the next three overs. A 30-run 13th over from Sulieman Benn, which included four sixes by Gayle, brought Tallawahs within 50 of the target with seven overs left. Gayle and Andre Russell shared a 107-run third-wicket stand. Russell contributed an 18-ball 24 before he holed out to long-off in the 17th over, but Tallawahs cruised to the target with 10 balls to spare. Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 1 for 9 from four overs. After being asked to bat, Knight Riders were given a brisk start by Brendon McCullum and Hashim Amla, who anchored the innings with a brisk 74. Their 49-run stand was broken by a slider from Imad Wasim that got past McCullum’s cut to clatter into the off stump.Colin Munro, who had made the CPL’s first ton by an overseas player in the previous game, continued his impressive form with a quickfire 55. Knight Riders scored 53 off the last four overs to finish with 191 but came up short in the end.

Rangers Could Replace Morelos With £3.3m-Rated "Machine"

Glasgow Rangers will be aiming to make their summer transfer window as effective as possible in order to give them the best chance of turning the tide next season.

Michael Beale has already lured Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell to Glasgow, and they have both been positive signings after "playing well" of late – as per the Gers boss – with another few like that before next season the requirement in order to prevent Celtic running away with the title again.

With Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos confirmed to be leaving the club this summer following the expiration of their contracts, Beale will be looking at adding a few new attackers to his squad this summer.

One name to have been linked with the club is Brandon Vazquez, with 90min claiming last month that the Gers have scouted the FC Cincinnati striker ahead of the transfer window. He is currently valued at €3.8m (£3.3m) and with a deal running until 2025, the Ibrox side may need to offer more than that to sign him.

Could Brandon Vazquez be an Alfredo Morelos heir at Rangers?

Although Morelos has endured a poor season from a goal-scoring point of view, netting just 12 goals in all competitions, his time at Rangers will go down as a highly productive one, becoming the clubs highest ever European scorer and winning both the Premiership and Scottish Cup during his time in Glasgow.

A change is needed now and Vazquez could be an ideal replacement for the Colombian hitman ahead of 2023/24. Across 33 MLS appearances in the 2022 season, he scored 19 goals and grabbed eight assists, indicating that scoring and providing plenty of chances for others shouldn’t be a problem by moving to Scotland.

He had 1.3 shots on target per game, created seven big chances and succeeded with 0.5 dribbles per game, which were all better than Morelos’ one shot on target, four big chances created and 0.3 dribbles per game, suggesting that not only would he make a fine replacement for the departing striker, but he could also potentially be an upgrade judging by these stats.

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

Journalist Chris Smith said that Vazquez “has developed into a ruthless goalscoring machine” back in August last year and the 24-year-old has even been capped three times for the USA, scoring once, proving that Rangers could be signing a player who is going to be a regular for their national team over the coming years.

There will be a void to fill with Morelos leaving Ibrox, yet Vazquez has displayed all the correct attributes during his stint in the MLS to suggest that he could make the next step and shine in Europe.

Arsenal Register Summer Interest In £70m Midfield "Leader"

Arsenal have made contact to enquire about a summer deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, according to reports.

Is Mason Mount leaving Chelsea?

The Stamford Bridge academy graduate has made 20 Premier League starts this season but has missed the last six top-flight outings with a pelvis injury, and during his spell on the sidelines, his future off the field has become extremely uncertain over the past couple of weeks.

The England international’s contract is set to expire at the end of next season, meaning that the upcoming window is likely to be the Blues' final big opportunity to cash in, should he not want to extend his stay further, a scenario which is likely considering that he’s already rejected multiple new offers to commit to his future in SW6.

Sky Sports have reported that Manchester United are the current frontrunners to land the 24-year-old should he leave despite a long-term interest from Liverpool, and it’s claimed that Todd Boehly has placed a £70m price tag on his star’s head, with that being the minimum fee needed to part ways ahead of the 2023/24 term.

Are Arsenal signing Mount?

According to 90min, Arsenal have also “registered their interest” in Mount by approaching his representatives to make them aware of their admiration for him. Chelsea’s anticipated new manager Mauricio Pochettino is said to be a “huge fan” of the midfielder and “wants him to be a part” of his long-term project which has created a “confidence” that he will turn down outside interest to put pen to paper on fresh terms.

The Blues are therefore “set for a meeting” with the Portsmouth-born talent “next week” to try and convince him to remain in the capital beyond the summer.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

Chelsea will know that it’ll be hard to turn down a sizable bid for Mount given the financial crisis that they are in, so Arsenal should definitely capitalise on this by testing the waters to see if an agreement could be reached for him to move to the Emirates Stadium.

The Blues attacking midfielder, who’s sponsored by Nike, has clocked up 70 goal contributions (37 assists and 33 goals) in 195 senior appearances and has even been lauded a “leader” in the centre by talent scout Jacek Kulig having previously captained his side, whereas Rio Ferdinand also labelled Mount a "mad player".

The Champions League participant is also a versatile operator having played in an outstanding seven different positions since first bursting onto the scene, including four in the midfield, out wide on both flanks and even at centre-forward, so this could be an attractive attribute to Mikel Arteta and yet another reason why he would make for a fantastic signing during the upcoming window.

Jennings commits his future to Durham

Keaton Jennings has signed a new four-year deal to remain at Durham after interest from a number of other counties

Keaton Jennings has signed a new four-year deal to remain at Durham. Jennings, who had been out of contract at the end of the season, had emerged as a target of several rival clubs with Warwickshire having held talks with him in recent days and seeing him as a potential leader of their side. But, despite their well-documented financial pressures, Durham have been able to hang on to Jennings and have now secured him on a long-term deal. He has stood-in as captain in recent days and looks a potential club captain of the near future.Despite being born in Johannesburg, Jennings emerged through the Durham academy and made his first team debut for the club in 2012. A solid, patient, top-order batsman, he is currently the top run-scorer in the top division of the County Championship and has emerged as a valuable medium-pace bowler in limited-overs cricket. Aged just 24, he has the bulk of his career ahead of him.”Durham has afforded me the opportunity over the past few years to learn the trade and start to build a career and I am grateful for their support,” Jennings said. “As a team, we have an exciting future ahead in search of the same success that we experienced in 2013 and 2014. It’s a privilege to be part of this environment and I’m looking forward to adding value where possible.”The singing will come as a considerable relief to Durham. Already resigned to losing Mark Stoneman to Surrey, there have been fears that the club could lose several other top players to rival clubs as money troubles inhibit their ability to pay comparable wages. But news of Jenning’s new contract will boost hopes they can also retain the services of Scott Borthwick and Mark Wood. The news will be a setback to Warwickshire, though. Having lost the service of Varun Chopra, who has announced he is returning to Essex at the end of the season, the club were hoping to sign a replacement top-order batsman with many years in front of him. Jennings fitted the bill perfectly.

Burns lightens gloom but umpires darken the mood

Rory Burns shone through the gloom at Kia Oval, and so did the floodlights – although not brightly enough for the umpires who did cricket a disservice

Right now, it takes a fair bit to get Surrey fans to grumble. They are a team on the up, with a cup final a week Saturday and their relegation fears all but eased. They have much of the brightest talent in the land, and a seam attack suddenly the envy of the shires. Here, they had a pretty good day on a pitch that was lively from ball one. One of those young thrusters scored a ton and, having been invited to bat without the tossing of a coin, they are on their way to carving out a match-shaping score. But grumble they sure did. They grumbled because three times, on a gloomy but cricketable late season Tuesday, the umpires took the players from the field for bad light. Each time, the floodlights were on. On the first two, the conditions appeared fine and the umpires remained on the field with the conditions barely seeming to have improved. The third, at around 5.15 and with the new ball due, proved terminal. As always, the Oval had a healthy crowd (that should not be taken for granted) and their grumbling – and the booing, and the heckling – was not without reason. These were people who pay their money to watch cricket. Vital points, for both sides, were at stake. At a brilliantly equipped Test ground, with the floodlights on, neither did batting feel dangerous (on the first two occasions, Liam Dawson was bowling his left-arm orthodox), nor did a fielder fail to pick up the ball.Umpiring is a thankless and tricky task, and fans are generally understanding of this, but taking a generous light reading shortly after lunch on the first day – and thus setting the benchmark for the rest of the match – is self-destructive. Those fans grumbled that they would not be going off if the game was on TV, and were quick to remind the umpires that they had paid for this displeasure. Some announced loudly that they would not be returning on Wednesday because “well, what’s the point?”It seemed one of those regular reminders that through all its troubles, county cricket often fails to help itself. Sixteen unbowled overs may not seem much, but if this is the set precedent, then fans of the county game should not expect to see too much cricket this September.Through the gloom shone Rory Burns, who made his second Championship century of the season, after a far simpler one came in the reverse fixture at the Ageas Bowl in July. There are many reasons why Surrey have flown up the table – the end of Sam Curran’s schooling and Stuart Meaker’s relocated zip among them – but the elegant solidity Burns, the vice-captain, has offered from the top of the order has proved vital. These were tough runs. The pitch was fresh and the humidity helped the ball move in the air; Gareth Batty, Burns believed, would have bowled first, and 350 seems a very fine score. It took Burns 16 balls to score a run and he appeared relaxed about regularly being beaten outside off-stump. Burns’ unorthodox, crouched stance – unlike Eoin Morgan, that crouch seems to get deeper the better he bats – with a little glance to midwicket as the bowler approaches the crease, may seem peculiar, but it produces an array of stylish strokes. He pulls and cuts powerfully and with placement (Hampshire, just as they had at the Ageas, fed these strengths), while his work off his pads is brutal. His century came shortly after the second delay for light, with a pull for six beating the three men set for the stroke (a “heart in the mouth moment”, he said) followed by a scampered single to mid-off. Another pull, this time with a tamer top-edge, found one of those three men.Burns’ last and most fruitful stand – 76 – was with Ben Foakes, who was capped by Surrey at lunch played beautifully straight for his unbeaten 47, but four others had come and gone before. A brilliant legside catch by Lewis McManus did for Dominic Sibley, a ball after he was hit amidships, while both Kumar Sangakkara and Steven Davies fell to balls that got big just as they were beginning to purr. Arun Harinath carelessly slapped to square-leg.Late on, Sam Curran became Dawson’s first wicket, caught off bat and pad. The left-arm spinner, who seems increasingly likely to tour the subcontinent with England even though that was just his 13th wicket of the season, toiled hard but without great flight or marked turn. With a red ball, consistency is his currency and he seldom leaks runs; whether that is enough remains to be seen.
