Klopp must unleash Liverpool’s "leader" vs Real Madrid

Liverpool face a mammoth task in overcoming Real Madrid in the Champions League, having fallen to a chastening 5-2 defeat at Anfield in the first leg.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have certainly fallen from prominence this season, currently fifth in the English top-flight and having fallen in the early phases of both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, with continental football the final realistic chance of silverware this season.

And even that may be too tall an order; Liverpool stormed into a 2-0 lead in the early stages of the first match against Los Blancos, but an inexplicable collapse left the away side putting five past the silenced Anfield faithful.

However, if Klopp's past endeavours against Spanish opposition in the Champions League are anything to go by, a sliver of hope may yet be intact.

Liverpool fell to a 3-0 defeat against Barcelona in the 2018/19 edition of the prestigious tournament, before incredibly sinking La Blaugrana with a four-goal romp in the reverse fixture on Merseyside.

However, the circumstances are starkly polarising to the former verve that Liverpool harnessed to forge a route towards Champions League glory, but one phenom that must be utilised to achieve the achievable is stalwart Roberto Firmino.

Will Firmino start against Real Madrid?

Since signing for Liverpool for £29m from Hoffenheim in 2015, the Brazilian Firmino has scored 108 goals and provided 79 assists 355 appearances, integral in winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, among other major honours.

And this season, despite Liverpool’s struggles, the 31-year-old has plundered ten goals and five assists from just 16 appearances, providing a cutting edge to Liverpool’s attack amid the lack of fluidity.

Statistics provided by FBref for Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino over the past year.

Hailed as a “leader” by journalist Henry Winter, the 55-cap attacker ranks incredibly among forwards competing across Europe’s major leagues over the past year, with both his direct threat and creative flair illustrated.

The £180k-per-week South American has recorded an average rating of 7.07 in the Champions League this season, as per Sofascore, scoring two goals and serving one assist from four starts, creating 1.4 key passes per match and completing an assured 81% of his passes.

Against Madrid, who will be buoyed by their advantage and the cacophonous Santiago Bernabeu crowd, Firmino’s composure and selfless offensive arsenal will only enhance the prospects of his team-mates around him.

He should start in the stead of Cody Gakpo, who has scored four goals from 13 matches since his £35m winter transfer from PSV Eindhoven.

Gakpo has displayed plenty of promise, signing at a tumultuous time for the struggling outfit, but struggled against Madrid in the first leg, withdrawn after 64 minutes, making just 25 touches and failing to take a shot.

In a match of paramount importance, the deployment of Firmino simply must be enacted, with the likes of Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah only benefiting from his dynamic ubiquity.

Although unlikely, it's a change that could well ensure a huge upset in the Spanish capital.

Wolves Could Ditch £100k-p/w Striker For Academy Star

Wolverhampton Wanderers have seen an upswing in form and performance since the appointment of Julen Lopetegui in November, but still perch just three points above the Premier League drop zone despite occupying 13th place in the division.

The fight to preserve top-flight status has embroiled around a plethora of outfits, and the finest of margins could make a huge difference as the clamber up the table continues.

Wolves have scored a joint-divisional low 22 goals this term, with Daniel Podence and Ruben Neves the Old Gold's top scorers with five strikes each, despite neither ace occupying the centre-forward role.

Raul Jimenez is a shadow of his former vigour, while January signing Matheus Cunha has yet to exhibit the desired cutting edge at Molineux; Diego Costa, an infamous titan of the Premier League, is now 34 years old and has failed to score across his 16 outings for the club.

Considering this, Lopetegui must delve into Wolves' youth ranks and offer a platform for one of the outfit's most promising young forwards: Tyler Roberts.

Who is Tyler Roberts?

The 19-year-old Roberts is a dynamic forward capable of flourishing both in a central talismanic role and on the offensive right flank, occasionally tried at left wing.

Roberts made a resounding start to life on the Old Gold pitch, scoring 16 goals and registering four assists from 37 outings at U18 level before transitioning to the U21 outfit, where he has bagged four strikes from 25 displays.

The one-cap Jamaica international has been hailed as "dangerous" by prominent Athletic reporter Tim Spiers, also praised as "excellent" and for his striking of a "great goal" by Steve Davis while plying his trade for the academy.

Having made two starts in the Football League Trophy this term, Roberts has found the net once and averaged one shot and 0.5 key passes per match, earning valuable experience as he prepares for a shot at senior action.

Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Raul Jimenez.

And with the aforementioned Jimenez failing to replicate his past feats in Wolverhampton, breathing some youthful exuberance into the side could pay dividends at the expense of the £100k-per-week man.

Jimenez, now 31 years of age, has scored 57 goals and provided 24 assists from 164 outings for Wolves, but now struggles for his clinical touch, failing to beat the goalkeeper in the top flight this year and scoring just ten goals across the past three league campaigns.

With a dynamic replacement in Roberts not only bolstering the front line but providing competition across a multitude of roles, Lopetegui could find a glittering new gem in his fold, and with the Mexican indeed seemingly past his free-flowing best, he could find himself ousted for the fresher face.

Newcastle United Have "Long Admired" £85k-p/w Star

Newcastle United have "long admired" Liverpool's Joe Gomez, and they are interested in a summer move for the centre-back, according to agent Haydn Dodge, who recently spoke to CaughtOffside.

Who could Newcastle sign this summer?

It is fair to say Eddie Howe's side have surpassed expectations this season, currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, two points off the top four with two games in hand, but the manager still wants to strengthen in multiple areas this summer.

In terms of attacking options, Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson has recently been scouted, while Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips could be brought in to bolster the midfield, amid a lack of game time with the reigning champions. There has been less talk about new signings in defence, given that Newcastle have the best defensive record in the top flight, however they could target a player from a rival top flight club…

According to Dodge, Howe is a big fan of Gomez, and is looking to bring him to St. James' Park ahead of next season. In an interview with CaughtOffside, the agent said:

“It is quite well known that Newcastle United have long admired defender Joe Gomez as they look to bolster their centre-half options ahead of several players being out of contract this summer.”

Will Joe Gomez sign for Newcastle?

The bad news for Newcastle is that Liverpool are under no real obligation to sell the defender, given that he is contracted until the summer of 2027, meaning that it may take a huge bid to prise him away from the Merseyside club. There are some indications that the Englishman could be worth it, as a result of his performances for Liverpool across a number of seasons, making 28 appearances in the Reds' title-winning 2019-20 campaign, achieving an average match rating of 6.92.

The current campaign has been far more of a struggle for Liverpool, but Gomez has still managed to impress at times, being hailed "sensational" by the media back in October, after a dominant performance in Jurgen Klopp's side's 1-0 triumph against Man City, making six clearances and winning three tackles.

Even so, centre-back should not be a priority position for Newcastle to upgrade in the summer, considering Fabian Schar and Sven Botman are among the best-performing players in the squad, and the £85k-per-week Liverpool defender would be likely to cost far too much money, given his contract situation.

Tottenham Dealt Wait In Julian Nagelsmann Pursuit

Tottenham manager target Julian Nagelsmann won't consider a new job until the summer arrives, according to a new update regarding his future.

Where is Nagelsmann off to next?

It has been a busy period at both Spurs and Bayern Munich recently, with two high-profile managerial casualties dominating the headlines. Conte has parted ways with the former, following a breakdown in his relationship with the club, while Nagelsmann was sacked by the latter in surprising fashion.

Not many expected the 35-year-old to be relieved to his duties at this point in this season, especially with Bayern still in the Champions League and also in with a great chance of securing another Bundesliga title.

Nagelsmann has since emerged as arguably one of the front-runners to become Spurs' new manager, with the club seeing him as an exciting young option who could bring fresh ideas and success to the team.

A new update has now come to the fore, however, and it may not be one that Tottenham fans appreciate – with many wanting a new manager brought in before the end of the season.

Can Spurs still land Nagelsmann?

According to Sport 1 [via Sport Witness], Nagelsmann "doesn’t want to take on a new coaching job for the time being", as he contemplates his sacking at Bayern. For now, the German "wants to take a break with family and friends" and a new job "will not be considered until summer at the earliest".

The report does state that a move to the Premier League "definitely appeals to him", however, although he is also eyeing up the Real Madrid job, should Carlo Ancelotti move on at the end of the season.

This update is certainly a blow for Spurs in the short-term, with any hopes of securing Nagelsmann's services before this summer seemingly over.

That could affect their top-four chances, with temporary head coach Cristian Stellini potentially taking charge for the rest of the campaign, which with all due respect to him, is not the same as a manager of Nagelsmann's stature coming in and making an immediate impression. The hope is that Spurs have enough to get them over the line, though, before snapping up the former Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern man once he is ready for a job again.

While things have ended sourly for him at Bayern, he is a hugely talented manager who has already won one Bundesliga title and two German Super Cups, and his tactical acumen and personality could make him the ideal candidate to be Conte's successor.

Man Utd Could Find De Gea Heir In £88m "Batman"

There may be just a matter of weeks left in the season, although Manchester United are still yet to tie down long-serving goalkeeper David De Gea to a new deal, with the experienced Spaniard's current deal set to expire this summer.

As per The Athletic, while the 32-year-old has rejected a recent offer from the club regarding a potential extension, the belief is that the former Atletico Madrid man will sign on the dotted line sooner rather than later, as well as accepting a reduction on his reported £375k-per-week salary.

Despite the expectancy that the 45-cap machine will stay at Old Trafford beyond the end of this season, it does appear that Erik ten Hag is still eyeing potential replacements for the Red Devils' number one in the long-term, amid reports linking United with a move for Valencia stopper, Giorgi Mamardashvili.

According to transfer insider Dean Jones – in his article for GIVEMESPORT – the club's chief goalkeeping scout Tony Coton has seemingly taken a liking to the Georgian giant, having made 'repeated visits' to see the 22-year-old in action this season.

The report suggests that the 6 foot 6 colossus would be the 'first-choice' option to replace De Gea at present, despite various claims that the youngster – who is also attracting interest from both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur – could be worth as much as €100m (£88m), due to a release clause in his current deal with the La Liga side.

Would Giorgi Mamardashvili be a good fit for Man United?

While the Premier League giants do currently have academy graduate Dean Henderson on their books, the aforementioned Jones revealed that the 26-year-old 'could be sold' this summer, having been unable to dislodge De Gea as the starting option at the club.

The England international also somewhat burned his bridges with his parent club following an explosive interview last summer, having made the decision to join Nottingham Forest on loan for the current campaign.

The Whitehaven-born menace is no longer the first-choice pick at the City Ground, however, following the signing of Keylor Navas from Paris Saint-Germain in January, with Henderson hardly showcasing why he should be the successor to De Gea back at the Theatre of Dreams.

As such, it could well be Mamardashvili who represents the ideal heir to the former Spain international moving forward, with the "Georgian Batman" – as hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – having shone at the Mestalla in recent times.

Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili

Despite Valencia currently fearing for their future in La Liga, the towering ace has done his utmost to try and keep the club in the top flight, having already made 79 saves in the league this season, a greater record than that of De Gea (77).

The younger man also appears far more ready to spring off his line in order to deny an opponent as he ranks in the top 18% among his European peers for average distance of defensive actions – meaning distance from goal of all defensive actions – while De Gea has appeared more rooted to his goal line, as he ranks in just the top 47% in that regard.

Equally, despite the plight of his current side, it is actually Mamardashvili who has conceded fewer goals than that of the current United man (32 vs 37), as well as enjoying a better save per game average (2.9 vs 2.7).

That should indicate that while it may prove costly to prise the former Dinamo Tbilisi man from Spain, the exciting talent could well represent the future of Man United's goalkeeping ranks.

Chelsea Still In The Race To Sign Declan Rice

Chelsea still have a good chance of signing Declan Rice in the summer transfer window, according to a key update from journalist Simon Phillips.

Could Rice leave West Ham this summer?

The 24-year-old may be playing for a struggling West Ham side currently, but he has still had another strong season on an individual note. He has enjoyed an 88.5% pass completion rate in the Premier League, as well as averaging 2.2 tackles and 1.1 aerial duel wins per game.

Given Rice's standing as a key man for England, it looks increasingly likely that he will depart the Hammers at the end of the season, in order to move to a bigger club. He is out of contract at the London Stadium next year, so this summer will be the last opportunity for the east Londoners to receive lots of money for his signature.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Englishman numerous times in recent months, as the Blues look to bolster their midfield and bring in younger legs. Now, a new update has emerged, with a switch to Stamford Bridge still potentially on the cards.

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

Is England man off to Chelsea?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Phillips claimed that Chelsea remain in the mix to sign Rice in the summer window, with Arsenal also getting a mention:

"It’s been described to me as a lot more open the race to signing you know, we’ve been hearing Arsenal are well ahead and laying down the foundations and they’ve got a better chance.

"But the reason I’ve been told this is Arsenal aren’t prepared to pay the high fee that they’re being quoted by West Ham for Rice at the moment so that leaves Chelsea very much still in this race, because they would be prepared to pay what it takes."

Rice joining Chelsea this summer could be a match made in heaven, with the 41-cap England international someone who is blossoming into a truly formidable footballer, being hailed as "unbelievable" for former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere. He has developed into a box-to-box player who can provide both lung-busting runs through the middle of the park to support attacks, but also break up play at the other end.

That is highlighted by an average of 2.2 interceptions per match at the 2022 World Cup, where he also completed a hugely impressive 94.3% of his passes.

The fact that Rice is also a boyhood Chelsea fan acts as an extra bonus, with the West Ham potentially wanting to test himself at the club he loved growing up, as well as his family. He and Enzo Fernandez could forge a long-term partnership in the Blues' midfield, proving to be a dominant duo.

35 y/o Not Keen On Chelsea Job Due To Timing

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Julian Nagelsmann has pulled out of the Chelsea managerial race due to poor timing.

What are the latest Chelsea manager rumours?

The former Bayern Munich has been considered one of the main candidates to take over in west London after Graham Potter was recently sacked.

Indeed, just a matter of days ago, The Guardian claimed the 35-year-old was the frontrunner after "impressing in talks" following a meeting with the club’s sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.

However, since then, Romano has reported that the German is no longer likely to be hired by Chelsea after he has made himself unavailable to take over.

While speaking in more detail about the whole situation on his YouTube channel, Romano explained just why this had happened.

He explained: "What happened? In the last few days, from what I understand, the situation has changed. What happened is that Julian Nagelsmann… timing is a factor; also, he wants to plan for his future and he knows that Chelsea are taking time to make a final decision.

"At the moment, Julian Nagelsmann, it looks like his final decision looks ready to leave the race to become the new Chelsea coach."

Why won't Nagelsmann join Chelsea?

Judging from Romano's claim, it seems as though Nagelsmann isn't quite ready to take the job at this moment in time.

This could suggest that Chelsea want to hire a manager immediately even though Frank Lampard was appointed as interim until the end of the season.

Seeing as the Englishman has struggled since taking over, with the Blues losing his first four games in charge, perhaps Todd Boehly and co have lost patience and are now pushing to bring in a new face as soon as possible.

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann celebrates after the match vs Spurs

But if Nagelsmann doesn't want the job yet, he may have ruled himself out. This matches up with a recent claim made by insider Dean Jones to GiveMeSport.

Before this latest Chelsea development had occurred about Naglesmann pulling out of the race, the journalist wrote: "The German does not want to take up a new job during the season, preferring to come in for the summer to attack pre-season and focus fully on preparing a squad for a full campaign."

And so, it certainly does seem as though the timing just isn't right for Naglesmann, which raises the question of who the Blues go for next.

Mauricio Pochettino seems to be next on the list if the latest reports are to be believed, so perhaps links to the Argentinian will become more prominent over the coming weeks.
