Both Havertz and Rashford have been strugglingBent picked Havertz over RashfordGerman forward's recent performances earn recognitionWHAT HAPPENED?

Despite Havertz facing criticism for his initial performances at Arsenal, his recent goal-scoring form has impressed the former Premier League striker. Indeed, the Gunners forward has been on the upward trajectory this November as he netted his third goal in four matches after he got on the scoresheet against Lens on Wednesday evening in the Champions League. On the other hand, Rashford has been vastly inconsistent and has scored just twice this campaign in 17 appearances which led Bent to put his weight behind Haverrtz.

AdvertisementWHAT DARREN BENT SAID ABOUT HAVERTZ OVER RASHFORD

During an interview with talksSPORT, Bent said: "Right now, for what Arteta wants to do, yes. Currently where we are now, give me Havertz. I don't want Rashford at the minute. I don't know what I'm getting from Rashford.

"Rashford has got two (goals)! For starters, he's (Havertz) not appalling. This is not the lifetime achievement award. Last season, after the World Cup, Rashford was unbelievable. I've not seen that Rashford since. Right now, give me Kai Havertz over Rashford."

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Havertz is yet to realise his potential after he ended up on the British Isles in 2020 to join Chelsea. Although he redeemed himself by scoring the winning goal in the Champions League final against Manchester City, he has failed to match the expectations of the fans. In contrast, Rashford was thriving under Erik ten Hag in the 2022-23 and ended up scoring 30 goals. However, he has failed to keep up with his form and poor showings in the latest international break led Tim Sherwood to assert that Rashford shouldn't start for England at the upcoming Euros.

Havertz will look to continue hitting the right notes under the guidance of Mikel Arteta when the Gunners host Wolves at Emirates on Saturday. Whereas, Rashford has a point to prove to his critics at St. James' Park where the Red Devils will take on a high-flying Newcastle United side on the same day.

MEN, The Fab Three, BBC, MSN & football’s greatest ever trios

The Champions League sees Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani of PSG face Liverpool's Salah, Mane and Firmino – are they among the best triumvirates ever?

Neymar may have broken up Barcelona's band of brothers last season when he fled to France after a shock €222 million move to Paris Saint-Germain, but the legend of the MSN partnership will live on.

With the brilliant Brazilian lining up in attack alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, the Blaugrana won the Champions League, Club World Cup and La Liga (twice), tearing defences to shreds with their incredible pace, skill and movement

While MSN was forming at Camp Nou, Real Madrid saw their own attacking triumvirate become an institution within the Spanish capital.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who has since moved to Juventus, was the undisputed star of the show but the addition of Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema added more blistering pace, power and, of course, goals to a forward line that fired the Blancos to four Champions League triumphs in five years.

Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini formed a formidable defence in front of legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon as Juventus set about re-establishing themselves as a major European force.

Together, the BBC provided the foundation on which the Bianconeri's resurgence was founded, helping the Old Lady win six successive Scudetti before Bonucci departed for AC Milan last year only to return this summer.

How England can build a winning camp at the 2023 Women’s World Cup

England are readying themselves for a shot at Women’s World Cup glory in 2023, but how do they build a winning camp in Australia and New Zealand?

Sarina Wiegman has pieced together a star-studded squad that will go in search of global glory Down Under, with there plenty of European Championship-winning experience at her disposal. Injuries have struck at the worst possible time for some, but an ambitious group blends youthful exuberance with battle-hardened experience.

The Lionesses are, however, a long way from home and will need to keep their camp happy in order to sustain a challenge for the ultimate prize. So what is it like to form part of a major tournament and what are the key ingredients to success? GOAL put those questions to England legend Rachel Yankey…

GettyOn the road

Yankey, with 129 England caps to her name, has experience of World Cup camps on the other side of the world and – speaking in association with – told GOAL of what the class of 2023 can expect: “I saw their training sessions and they have got about 300 people watching, so I don’t think there will be a problem with support! The language is obviously not a problem, there is no barrier there. We went out to the China World Cup and it was all very, very different, but a fantastic experience.

“What the players will have to manage is the travelling, after games and the distance that they will have to travel, but the structure – they have got so many backroom staff, so many people with the knowledge of how to recover and the best equipment. I think they are in a really good place. If you look at the squad, they have got such a mixture of younger players and experienced players, so I think there will be a freshness to the squad. The things that in the past would have been a worry, I don’t think they are any more.”

AdvertisementGettyLively bunch

While talent will get the eventual winners of any competition over the line, character is also required in abundance. Yankey admits that England will need big personalities to deliver on and off the pitch in order for a first World Cup crown to be captured in 2023. She added: “I have always said that the biggest thing about tournament football is that the team that will ultimately go on and win the tournament is the team that gets it right on the days that you aren’t playing, the rest days or training. The team that can have the best spirit, because match days take care of themselves.

“The XI that are playing are happy, you have to make sure that the subs are happy and the players that are not involved – the player that doesn’t kick a ball. Beth England in the Euros didn’t kick a ball, but after every game she was running on that pitch celebrating with everybody and you would never have known. It is players like that you need around your squad because if one person gets a down day or an off day and it leads to another and another, then you have a problem in your squad.

“You really need to make sure that everybody understands their role, their responsibility within the squad and their value. These are really important things and they are nothing about kicking a ball! If you get that right, then when they go onto the pitch that’s the easy part because that’s what you have been practising your whole life to do. You have to make sure that you give everything that you’ve got and then the manager makes subs and you take your chances when you get them.

“The hard thing is making sure that the team stays together, the team stays happy, jolly. Yes, you take Ellen White out and look at her goals, but also her personality. People like Jill Scott, some of the best players to be around. I know Jill is out at the tournament doing the Lionesses Live – which is clever, taking a player like that because they are in and around the squad, the players know you and like you and it’s something different to break up the atmosphere of being in that bubble and forgetting that there is real life happening outside of your World Cup walls. They will have to manage that and get that right, but they know that. Sarina Wiegman knows that and I’m sure that is something that has been worked on in previous squads and is why the Netherlands and England have won tournaments.”

GettyStep up!

England will be without their Euros and Finalissima-winning captain, Leah Williamson, for the World Cup finals – with the Arsenal star nursing knee ligament damage. Yankey is, however, confident that the Lionesses have enough leaders in their group to cope with the armband being passed on. She said when asked if others can step up: “Yeah, I think so. In the Euros, yes, Leah wore the armband, but I definitely think that Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, they would have taken leading roles within that team. Alex Greenwood, these are players that have so much fight within them and are so liked by the squad, they are listened to by the squad. It would surprise me if they weren’t big leaders and characters in there.”

GettyOverlooked

England had the opportunity to draft a former skipper back into their plans – one that could also have filled in for Williamson at centre-half – but decided against handing a recall to Lionesses legend Steph Houghton. Pressed on whether that decision came as a surprise, Yankey – who once played alongside the long-serving Manchester City star – said: “Yeah, to be honest. When you get injuries in terms of Leah and then you look at some of the defenders and the inexperience of some of those that have been picked and the experience that Steph has, it was a bit of a surprise to me. But I’m not the manager, I don’t know what she sees and how she wants to build and mould the team.

“Those things are important. I’m sure there were valid reasons in terms of why Steph wasn’t picked. But if Steph was in that squad, I would have no doubts that she would have done a fantastic job and would have been able to play 90 minutes game after game. I know her mentality, her professionalism, she keeps herself fit and sharp. She finished the season really well for Manchester City, so it’s a shame with her qualities of leading and being a force in the team to push players on, but I’ve missed out before in previous tournaments and it’s the manager’s choice – you can’t do anything about that.”

Ronaldo has won the Champions League on five occasions. The first of those triumphs came while on the books at Manchester United, with the other four enjoyed during a record-breaking stint at Real Madrid. When asked if he would swap his European titles for a World Cup win with Portugal, Ronaldo said he would not. The lie detector – which was taken in association with – said he was telling the truth.

Ronaldo is the all-time leading goalscorer in the history of men’s international football. He has earned 200 caps for his country and continues to make himself available for selection. He may well grace the 2026 World Cup – which would be his sixth appearance at FIFA’s flagship event. Asked if Portugal are capable of winning that tournament, Ronaldo said “yes”. That was considered to be a lie, with the 38-year-old saying: “What a pessimist, huh?”

Best goal

The Portuguese icon has scored many memorable goals down the years, but few can be considered better than the stunning bicycle kick he netted for Real Madrid during a Champions League clash with Juventus in 2017-18. Ronaldo said that effort was his best, but was informed that he was lying. He was not having that and said of that strike: “For me it's the best goal. You can say it's the most difficult… the most beautiful. It depends, so many things.”

Ombudsman asks Harbhajan to dissociate from Bhajji Sports

The BCCI ombudsman, Justice AP Shah, has asked the board to take an “unequivocal undertaking” from spinner Harbhajan Singh that he will no longer be in the management of the sports apparel company, Bhajji Sports

Nagraj Gollapudi18-Feb-2016The BCCI ombudsman, Justice AP Shah, has asked the board to take an “unequivocal undertaking” from spinner Harbhajan Singh that he will no longer be in the management of the sports apparel company, Bhajji Sports, and will not be associated with the company, even in terms of sponsorship, for the duration of his contract with the Indian board. Shah also took the opportunity to tell the BCCI that he had received a lot of allegations similar to the complaint against Harbhajan, especially from the state associations, and suggested that players, coaches, selectors and administrators make prior disclosures of similar associations with companies or academies.Shah’s decision came after a conflict of interest allegation was filed last month questioning Harbhajan’s links to a sports apparel company that sponsors various state teams in domestic cricket. In a complaint filed against Harbhajan in January, Mumbai-based activist Niraj Gunde stated that Bhajji Sports had reportedly sponsored six Ranji Trophy sides. Shah’s ruling noted that the company was owned by Mrs Avtar Kaur, Harbhajan’s mother, and the company was started before the spinner’s current contract with the board came into effect and before the present rules regarding conflict of interest were framed. Harbhajan was given a Grade C contract by the BCCI in November for the 2015-16 period.”The Ombudsman notes that this company appears to be run, not by Mr Singh, but by his mother,” Shahs said in an e-mail sent to Harbhajan, Gunde and the BCCI on Wednesday. “It must be mentioned that several cases have been brought to the attention of the Ombudsman where companies associated with cricket management or sporting apparel, or cricket coaching/training academies, are run in the names of relatives of cricketers, with which the cricketer is also associated or connected. In many of these cases, although the company is owned by someone else, it is named after the cricketer in question. In the present case, the Ombudsman notes that the two news reports submitted by the applicant show Mr Singh’s association with Bhajji Sports. The veracity of the news reports is not challenged by Mr Singh.”According to Shah the only course of action he would recommend for Harbhajan was to dissociate himself from Bhajji Sports completely as long as he had a BCCI contract. “Given the facts and circumstances of the case, the Ombudsman believes that the best course of action may be that the BCCI take an unequivocal undertaking from Mr Singh that he will no way be involved in the management of the company, Bhajji Sports, and that under no circumstances will he be associated with the company’s products (including by way of sponsorship), so long as his contract with the BCCI is alive,” Shah said.Making a broader point in his ruling on similar conflict of interest situations, Shah stressed the need for players, coaches, selectors, administrators at both national and state levels to disclose any conflict in context of the rules laid down on the issue by the BCCI.”The Ombudsman recommends that all concerned individuals (cricketers, selectors, coaches, and administrators) should be required to make standard disclosures about their affiliations in the context of the conflict of interest rules (which may pertain, for example, to cricket coaching/training academies, sports management companies, sports apparel manufacturers, etc.),” Shah said.”If the disclosures reveal that an individual does have such an association, they may be asked to either terminate their association with such companies/academies, or asked to resign from their position as cricketer/selector/coach/administrator, as covered by the conflict of interest rules.”

TN's formidable batting up against Maharashtra seamers

The second semi-final between Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra in Kolkata is expected to be a battle between one of the most consistent seam attacks this season and a formidable batting line-up

While Tamil Nadu have played most of their matches this season on turning tracks, Maharashtra have thrived on seamer-friendly conditions. Their four-pronged pace attack of Samad Fallah, Anupam Sanklecha, Domnic Joseph and allrounder Shrikant Mundhe has delivered virtually every time so far this season and they would be keen to repeat last season’s feat of an appearance in the final.TN, on the other hand, have the likes of Abhinav Mukund, M Vijay and Dinesh Karthik to take on the in-form Maharashtra pacers. Chong, Gomes & the top 10 teenage stars to watch at Man Utd

Goal takes at a look at the bright young talents waiting in the wings at United, including some who have already made an impression on Jose Mourinho

Manchester United have a long history of producing players through their storied academy, with 3,912 consecutive first-team games stretching back to October 1937 featuring at least one former member of their youth system in the squad.

The likes of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Scott McTominay have been regulars in the United senior ranks this term as that trend continues, but the prospects remain good for a longer-term presence as well thanks to the strides being made by some of their current academy stars.

Kieran McKenna's free-scoring under-18s have remained largely unaffected by the graduation of many of their better players to Ricky Sbragia's under-23 squad, and that in itself says much about the quality on display in the younger ranks.

Below,  Goal  looks at 10 of the greatest teenage talents in the Manchester United system.

GettyAidan Barlow

A goal-scoring attacking midfielder, Barlow is one of the most exciting young players on United’s books. He thrust himself into the spotlight with a hat-trick against Newcastle and two belters against Liverpool in the latter stages of a 2016-17 under-18 campaign in which he ended as top scorer and has netted nine more times this term. Few 18-year-olds exhibit such confidence with the ball at their feet.

GettyTahith Chong

After overcoming a serious knee injury, Chong has recently made the step up to the reserve ranks and has continued to sparkle. His strength, speed and rangy running style make for a wonderful vision on the ball and he also possesses fantastic footballing instinct, rarely switching off and often making opposition sides pay for lapses of concentration.

The Dutchman clearly has a fantastic future in the game, and his fearlessness makes him a great team-mate to have for those in the final third.

GettyAngel Gomes

With two first-team substitute appearances already under his belt, the 17-year-old is well known to Manchester United fans as one of their stars of the future. His wonderful ability on the ball and priceless vision more than make up for his diminutive stature, and he has made a seamless rise to reserve team football this season.

No youngster is guaranteed to become a star at first-team level, but the England under-18 international appears destined to be a household name in the future.

Some players spend their entire career attempting to master the ability to control a ball the way Greenwood can with his wand of a left foot. His rise in prominence in the under-18s this season has seen him net 15 goals in 17 appearances, including seven in his last four games as he has been employed as a centre-forward rather than his previous slot as a number 10.

Still just 16, he has plenty more time to learn his trade but hopes are high for him.
