CPFC: Fans react to James McCarthy update

Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy, who has been linked with a move to Celtic, will leave the club at the end of the season.

McCarthy is out of contract in a matter of weeks, and it seems as if the 30-year-old will be just one of a number of players to walk out of Selhurst Park for nothing this summer.

The Athletic’s Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam wrote a piece mainly on Patrick van Aanholt’s pending Eagles exit on Monday.

In that story, Woosnam added that the club has 12 players with deals set to expire, with McCarthy, Mamadou Sakho, Wayne Hennessey and Connor Wickham set to join van Aanholt in leaving for nothing.

As mentioned, McCarthy has been linked with a move to Celtic Park, with Newcastle United also now in the race to sign the central midfielder.

Palace fans react

Leeds hero Ayling achieves incredible stat

Leeds United hero Luke Ayling has achieved an incredible statistic that outlines the enormous influence he has had for the Whites this season.

The Lowdown: Ayling continues to shine

The 29-year-old has been a stalwart of the Marcelo Bielsa era, as well as prior to the Argentine arriving, making 188 appearances for the club in total.

Ayling has brought a consistent level of quality from right-back, combining dogged defensive work with attacking forays, proving to be a fans’ favourite in the process.

The Latest: Ayling beats Messi

The Englishman’s influence is appreciated by Leeds supporters, but other fans may also sit up and take notice after his latest achievement.

According to OptaJoe on Twitter, Ayling has progressed the ball up the pitch more distance than any player in Europe’s top five league this season – a total of 5,421 metres.

In second place is a certain Barcelona legend called Lionel Messi (5,244), with Ruben Dias (5,180), Theo Hernandez (5,111) and Jonathan Gradit (5,017) making up the top-five.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Ayling’s influence highlighted

To pip Messi to anything on a football pitch takes some doing, so Ayling should feel immensely proud of his efforts, as he continues to show off his influence for Leeds.

He is such a forward-thinking player in everything he does, proving to be the perfect full-back for Bielsa, providing endless energy and quality, missing just 20 minutes of Premier League action this season.

Ayling’s lively personality also seems to rub off on those around him and it may only be when he slows up or leaves that he is fully appreciated on a wider scale.

Ex-Leeds star not convinced by Rose

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has admitted that he is not Danny Rose’s biggest fan.

This comes after another former Leeds star, Paddy Kenny, suggested that the Yorkshire club should look to re-sign the 30-year-old this summer.

Leeds’ search for a new left-back has been well-documented, with Ezgjan Alioski set to leave Elland Road when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Whites have been linked with the likes of Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico and Crystal Palace man Patrick van Aanholt.

Like Van Aanholt, Rose will be a free agent in the summer and has loads of Premier League experience, so he could be an option worth exploring.

Palmer, though, remains far from convinced. On the Tottenham defender, he told TT in an exclusive interview:

“I’m not a big fan of Danny Rose. As a person, I think he’s a really decent person. But as a player, I’m not a big fan of his, to be fair.”

Rose, who came through the youth ranks at Leeds, is not currently a part of Spurs’ Premier League squad after being excluded by former manager Jose Mourinho.

Even with the Portuguese coach now gone, the England international’s future still looks to be away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as his contract continues to run down.

Forget Aarons: West Ham must sign Toney

If West Ham are to splash £30m on one player this summer, then there’s only one name that should sit atop their list…

What’s the word?

The Irons have been linked to many names ahead of the summer transfer window, including a few from the Championship.

One of which is Norwich City right-back Max Aarons, with the Independent suggesting that they have joined the race to sign the 21-year-old, who is valued at £30m.

Another name is Brentford talisman Ivan Toney, who is also thought to have a similar price tag slapped on him, according to TEAMtalk.

Finances will be at a premium at the end of the season, with many top-flight teams still dealing with the financial consequences of the pandemic and not having any supporters through the door, so if the Hammers are to fork out a fee as big as that, then Toney must be the man to spend it on, every day of the week.

Forget Aarons

It seems perplexing that West Ham would join the race for Aarons, who has been coveted by the likes of Spurs, Everton and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

You wouldn’t say David Moyes is blessed with options on the right-hand side of defence but you would certainly believe he’s more than covered with impressive signing Vladimir Coufal, Ryan Fredericks and academy starlet Ben Johnson.

The same can’t be said for upfront.

After selling club-record flop Sebastien Haller after just 18 months in East London, David Sullivan and co failed to land Moyes a replacement striker, leaving Michail Antonio as his only senior option for the rest of the season.

And he’s now out injured – potentially for the remainder of the campaign, too.

That is now looking like a catastrophic miscalculation from the Irons’ hierarchy and is something that absolutely has to be corrected ahead of next season.

Even though Antonio is a valuable source of goals for Moyes, the 31-year-old has only ever played more than 22 league games in one season across the course of his career since 2013.

Toney’s record, on the other hand, speaks for itself.

The prolific 25-year-old marksman secured a move to Brentford in the summer following a 26-goal season for League One outfit Peterborough United and has since taken to the step-up in levels like a duck to water.

Posh chairman Barry Fry recently dubbed Toney a “sensation” to Football FanCast in an exclusive interview.

He’s provided a whopping 29 goals and ten assists in 43 appearances this term, as per Transfermarkt.

Toney has likened himself to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the past – speaking to The Sun, he claimed: “I’ve always liked Zlatan. I just love his confidence.  Some people see it as arrogance but you must be like that to succeed. I’m similar to Zlatan in both my confidence and the way I play. When he wants to do something, he just does it. I have some of that in my game and personality. And I believe I’ll be a Premier League striker.”

Clearly, the striker exudes confidence and that can often be an underrated attribute of any player.

Bees boss Thomas Frank has even compared Toney to Spurs’ Harry Kane, due to his absurd goalscoring returns, and hailed him as a “special, special player.”

Whether he’s another Zlatan or another Kane, Sullivan and co absolutely must approve that £30m swoop this summer.

There’s no doubt about it.

Pundit claims Dallas deserves new deal

Leeds United favourite Stuart Dallas is worthy of earning a “big, big money” contract, according to former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The Whites have been superb back in the top-flight this season, with so many individuals standing out for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Illan Meslier has been a model of consistency in goal, Kalvin Phillips has starred in midfield and Raphinha has been a great addition to the attack.

It is Dallas who has arguably been Leeds’ Player of the Year, however, scoring seven goals in the league, including both efforts in the famous 2-1 win away to Manchester City.

Agbonlahor call for Dallas to get big-money deal

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor heaped praise on Dallas, saying it is only right that he is offered a new big-money contract at Elland Road, which is reportedly in the works:

“If there’s one player in the Premier League who deserves the big, big money of the Premier League it’s Dallas.

“Mr Reliable. He looks like he’s not the sort of player who would down tools when they sign a new contract. He looks like he’ll be exactly the same player.

“I’m sure the club will reward him the way he deserves because he’s been outstanding this season. Again at the weekend, he was outstanding.

“He’s just Mr Reliable. A player that every manager in the league would want because you can play him in so many positions.

“A very good player and a great addition to the league.”

Transfer Tavern take

Dallas has been a priceless performer for Leeds all season, and while others sometimes make headlines before him, he is one of the first names on Bielsa’s team-sheet.

The Northern Ireland international does so much selfless work for the team, highlighted by an average of 2.1 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game in the league this season, impressive defensive stats considering his contributions on the attacking side.

Dallas has been hailed as ‘unbelievable’ by ex-Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher and a new deal will surely come his way in the coming weeks. Leeds would be mad not to offer him one.

Williams can be Southampton’s Bertrand heir

Southampton are continuing to be linked with a move for Manchester United full-back Brandon Williams ahead of the summer transfer window, and if he were to make the move to St Mary’s, it would perhaps spell the end for Ryan Bertrand on the south coast.

According to The Athletic, the Saints remain keen on the 20-year-old Old Trafford academy graduate, despite seeing a January move for the defender break down.

It is suggested that Williams was keen on a loan move at the start of the season but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to keep him at the Manchester club, which hasn’t done much for the youngster’s development as he has made just two substitute appearances in the Premier Leauge so far this season.

The Saints are clearly in the market for a left-back ahead of next term, with Bertrand’s contract with the club set to expire at the end of the current campaign, whilst both Arsenal and Leicester City are reportedly keen on signing him.

Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see the 31-year-old depart this summer, especially if someone such as Williams is brought in, as it could see the former Chelsea man drop behind the youngster in the pecking order in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/southampton-saints-ralph-hasenhuttl-martin-semmens-st-marys” title=”Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more”]

Truthfully, Bertrand’s performances have declined in recent seasons and his poor average WhoScored rating of 6.44/10 in the Premier League this season speaks for itself, so perhaps the Saints should start looking towards the future by bringing in a replacement for the former England international.

We have already seen Southampton enjoy success in loaning a young defender from a ‘big six’ club, as they initially brought in Kyle Walker-Peters on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January of last year before making his move permanent in the summer after some impressive performances.

That deal turned into something of a masterclass by the Saints, as he has quickly established himself as a key player this season, so there seems no reason why they couldn’t target a similar ‘try before you buy’ deal for Williams this summer.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431″]

Hopefully, after the move broke down in January, we see Southampton return for the £9m-rated Williams ahead of next season, as his ability to play as both a left-back and a right-back immediately marks him out as someone who would fit in well at the south coast club, where Hasenhuttl appreciates versatile operators.

LFC could sign next Suarez in Hlozek

Liverpool could be set to bring in one of Europe’s most exciting youngsters this summer in the form of Sparta Prague’s Adam Hlozek.

According to Football Insider, the Reds are keeping a close eye on the 18-year-old ahead of a potential summer move, with Jurgen Klopp keen to bolster his forward line.

Rated at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the Czech international could be a perfect signing for the reigning Premier League champions, potentially even becoming their next Luis Suarez.

It is certainly easy to see why Hlozek has such prominent suitors as he is currently in the midst of a hugely productive campaign in the Fortuna Liga, having struck five goals and provided seven assists in just 13 appearances.

This follows the youngster having already had two seasons firmly established in the Sparta first team – an impressive feat for a player so young.

It’s an eye for goal which could certainly benefit the Reds, too. Klopp is reportedly keen to refresh his attack, with centre-forwards Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi scoring just seven goals between them in all competitions during 2020/21.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-asensio-vlahovic-van-dijk-alberto-pedri” title=” Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more…”]

Whilst it might be too early to say that Hlozek could be the answer or indeed match the achievements of Suarez, with the Uruguayan having plundered an eye-watering 82 goals in his time at Anfield, the path of the two strikers could be markedly similar.

Having also forged a reputation at a relatively young age in one of Europe’s ‘lesser’ leagues with the likes of Groningen and Ajax in the Netherlands, Suarez secured a move to Anfield at just 24, going on to become one of the most lethal forwards in Europe on Merseyside.

With Hlozek set to turn 19 in the summer and his reputation continuing to grow throughout European football, he could take a similar step to the current Atletico Madrid marksman in moving to Anfield as a relative unknown.

Liverpool must make sure they secure his signature before other clubs start to take notice of his talents.

Gers fans disagree with Gerrard

Many Glasgow Rangers fans do not fully agree with comments from Steven Gerrard on the ban given out to right-back Nathan Patterson.

On Sunday, the Gers progressed to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup after beating Cove Rangers 4-0, and they will now face Celtic in the next round. Patterson started the match and got himself on the scoresheet for the second time in his senior career (Transfermarkt).

Not long ago, it seemed that his time at Rangers could be in real danger after he broke lockdown regulations along with four of his teammates to attend a small house gathering. He has now been handed a six-game ban – something which has not gone down too well with Gerrard (Daily Record).

The manager has suggested that the ban is harsh, citing the 19-year-old’s ability on the pitch as one of the reasons why the SFA should have been more lenient as he said: “”You’re talking about one of the brightest prospects ever, in terms of right-back. This kid’s going to play for Scotland and all of a sudden the SFA want to ban him for that long, I don’t get it but we’ll see what happens moving forward.”

While many Gers supporters fell short of slamming Gerrard, it appears that some didn’t seem to fully agree. These fans took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the comments from Gerrard below

“I completely understand what Gerrard is saying but Patterson should have thought that going partying might damage his career it’s his own fault and if he damages his career I have no sympathy”

“Agree to an extent but ability shouldn’t come in to it.”

“I really, really don’t understand what the club are doing here”

“I get his point but end of day he broke rules. I’m a Rangers fan, this is about Tav injury must be, they got less than Jones and Edmundson bans”

Credit: @madrugadadave16

“Hardly damaging his career. He’s young and made a mistake. He should use the punishment as a motivation not to overstep the line again. Plus if Tav was fit this wouldn’t be getting mentioned.”

“I’m a lifelong Rangers fan and I don’t care how good he is or what form he is in at the moment, he did wrong as I always got told growing up ‘if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime’ it was stupid and reckless but just take the bans and move on!”

Everton’s Kenny has uncertain Celtic future

Carlo Ancelotti must work on offloading Jonjoe Kenny in the summer transfer market amid doubt in the Everton defender sealing a permanent move to Celtic.

What’s the word?

While speaking with Football Insider, former Toffees striker Kevin Campbell has raised doubt in Kenny remaining with the Hoops beyond his loan spell.

The right-back move to Parkhead on a half-season deal on Deadline Day of the winter market, having struggled to establish himself under Ancelotti.

Following a year on loan with Bundesliga outfit FC Schalke 04, Kenny returned to Goodison Park but only played eight times in all competitions before heading north of the border, where he has already featured on nine occasions.

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon was a key factor behind the Premiership giants pursuit, but Campbell expects that the Northern Irishman resigning could now impact the 24-year-old’s chances of remaining in Glasgow beyond the season.

“It all depends on who comes in,” Campbell said. “I think he’s a decent player. He’s not looked out of place for Celtic. But whoever comes in might have their own players in mind who they want to recruit. Watch this space.

“I thought he had a decent game against Rangers the other week but the one moment he fell asleep, [Alfredo] Morelos gets the goal [to equalise].

“That’s the defender’s lot. You have to be able to defend these things properly because that’s where the danger is and that’s what he’s paid to do. I’m sure he’d be disappointed, but I think he did have a decent game overall.”

Should Everton sell Kenny?

Ancelotti had proven throughout the season that Kenny was far from his first-choice, with Mason Holgate often selected to deputise for Seamus Coleman, and his position is unlikely to change with Everton being linked with moves for the likes of Diogo Dalot, Max Aarons and Tariq Lamptey.

If the Toffees are moving to sign a new right-back to act as Coleman’s long-term successor, Kenny’s time at Goodison Park will be expected to come to an end this summer as the club’s Director of Football Marcel Brands strives to balance the books.

Everton had been open to selling Kenny in January but priced the former England U21 international out of a move to Burnley by demanding £10m, and may struggle to earn that fee at the end of the season.

Kenny had cost Everton £300,000 per Premier League start this term having only started one of his four appearances before joining Celtic, who took on his wages, and he’d played a mere combined 77 minutes while earning £15,000-per-week on a deal that expires next year.

The full-back, who boasts a TransferMarkt valuation of £6.5m, is hardly playing his way into earning new terms at Celtic, making this summer potentially Everton’s last opportunity to secure a fee and avoid losing their academy product for free in 2022.

Kenny inadvertently set up Morelos for Rangers’ equalising goal in the Old Firm Derby earlier this month by playing a lazy back pass which went out of a corner, and ultimately endured a nightmare as he lacked form at both ends of the pitch.

The 24-year-old left a lot to the imagination in defeat to Ross County last month, as well, when Kenny lost possession more times (22) than all but one of his Hoops teammates and failed to find a green-and-white shirt with any of his six attempted crosses, per SofaScore.

His display returned Kenny’s worst SofaScore match rating in the Premiership to date at 6.5 out of 10, but the full-back’s output was on par with average performances after offering just 0.6 accurate crosses a game with a 16% success rate and losing possession 15.9 times.

Ancelotti will undoubtedly be keen to move Kenny on in the off-season, knowing the Liverpool-born defender is not up to the standard he will require.

Leeds: Bielsa discusses Raphinha

Leeds United face West Ham United on Monday night and Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa has been discussing the impact of Raphinha since he joined the club.Bielsa comments on RaphinhaSpeaking before the Premier League clash, Bielsa said: “What Raphinha is able to create, we’ve already seen. After, what shows more shine or not is whether he’s able to do it on a regular basis. The set-pieces, he manages them very well.”Physically, he’s very apt. He can unbalance individually or combine with his team-mates. I can’t think of many more things to add to an attacking player, but the most important thing is how many times those resources are shown in every game.”Raphinha is shining in momentsIt is easy to say why Bielsa is discussing the consistency of the £16.2m-valued Raphina as, in his 21 league appearances (including three from the bench), the 24-year-old has picked up five goals and five assists (Transfermarkt), This is a fantastic return for a relatively young player in a new league with a promoted team, but these goals and assists have come in patches and he has sometimes had lean spells on that front. His underlying attacking stats show that he is unlucky not to have more goals, as he has averaged 2.3 shots, 2.1 key passes and 1.7 successful dribbles per game for the Whites (WhoScored), figures which rank him highly among his teammates – he is second for shots and top for key passes and dribbles among Leeds’ squad. These figures show that he can shine in moments, but they need to be converted into more goals if he is to answer his manager’s comments about producing on a regular basis. In other news, this Leeds transfer target could be available in the summer!
